The day began at Arlington National Cemetery, where President Bush laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns. Fighter planes flew in the missing wingman formation. 8,000 Desert Storm troops paraded, led by General Norman Schwarzkopf. Military hardware, including the stealth bomber and Patriot missile, was showcased. Hundreds of thousands of spectators lined the streets to express their gratitude. Peace activists protested, but the overall mood was celebratory. A USO show and fireworks display were planned for the evening. The celebration was also for the people back home, who remembered the divisions of the Vietnam era and wanted to ensure Gulf War troops received a proper thank you. Soldiers were hugged, kissed, saluted, and cheered. Many felt the outpouring of affection made up for the lack of recognition given to Vietnam veterans.

In preparation for the 250th anniversary of American independence, I will establish the Salute to America 250 task force to coordinate year-long celebrations across the nation. Additionally, I will collaborate with all 50 governors to create the Great American State Fair, featuring pavilions from each state. Alongside this fair, we will host Patriot Games, showcasing talented high school athletes from around the country. I will also sign an executive order to revive the National Garden of American heroes, commissioning artists to create statues honoring great Americans. To mark this occasion, I will invite leaders and citizens from around the world to visit the United States. Lastly, I will ask religious communities to pray for our nation as we move forward. Let us unite as one nation under God.
