Among the Charleston Scottish Rite Lodge’s founding members were numerous prominent Jews, named as Isaac DeCosta, Moses Cohen, Israel Deleben, Doctor Isaac Held, Moses Levy, and Moses Piaksoto. The speaker identifies these men as Sephardic Jews from North Africa or Spain who had originally settled in the Caribbean and engaged in the early slave trade.
