Someone takes the life of a person because of their ideas or their ideals, then that very constitutional foundation is threatened. Now we have a person of interest in custody. The investigation is ongoing. But I want to make it crystal clear right now to whoever did this, we will find you. We will try you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law. And I just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.

I want to share with the people of Rhode Island what this investigation looks like, where we are today, and where we anticipate it moving forward. Last night, there were dozens of Providence police officers working in the command post to develop leads in this difficult case, both because of the campus tragedy and the challenge of developing evidence. Our prosecutors—six in total—were there, and our victim services folks were at the hospital. This is what these investigations look like: sometimes you head in one direction, then you regroup and go in another. That has happened over the last 24 hours or so. Collectively, the team developed leads in multiple areas. One lead was chased to ground, leading to the detainment of a person of interest. Those words reflect that there was some degree of evidence pointing to this individual, but that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed. Over the last 24 hours, leading into very recently, that evidence now points in a different direction. This means that this person of interest needs to be and should be released. It is unfortunate that this person’s name was leaked to the public, and it’s hard to put that back in the bottle. We will proceed very carefully here, because there is too much at stake for the victims of this horrific crime and their families to take chances with respect to this investigation. Going forward, our team of prosecutors will be working with the Providence Police Department as the principal leads in this investigation. Our resources will be amplified by the state police, the FBI, the ATF, the DEA, the Marshal Service, and others as we develop leads and move toward justice in this case. This could happen very quickly, but it could also take some time.

My sympathy to Charlie Kirk's family and to Charlie Kirk who obviously is, you know, become a target for somebody. I don't know whether it's political violence because I don't know who did it. I know they seem to have somebody in custody. But I will say that political violence unfortunately has been ratcheting up in this country. We saw the shootings, the killings in Minnesota. We've seen other political violence occur in other states, and I I would just say it's gotta stop. And I think there are people who are fomenting it in this country. I think the president's rhetoric often foments it. We've seen the January 6 rioters who clearly, you know, have tripped a new era of political violence.

Charlie Kirk was at Utah Valley University. Charlie was shot at that event. He was transported to a local hospital where he later passed. These individuals were not suspects. They were people of interest. We are not going to release that at this time. We have good video footage of this individual. Following yesterday's tragic shooting of Charlie Kirk, FBI agents have been working around the clock in coordination with our law enforcement partners. We have recovered what we believe is the weapon to be that was used in yesterday's shooting. It's a high powered, bolt action rifle. The rifle was recovered in a wooded area where the shooter had fled. As of this morning, we received more than a 130 tips. The FBI's mission is to protect the American people. Any attack on the First Amendment is an attack on the very foundation of our democracy.

There's a man in custody. I've really tried not to publicly speculate or say anything that I can't prove. I love Charlie and I well, I talked to his wife this morning. I love his wife, Erica. The guy's in custody, it's a very weird story. They're gonna need to do a real investigation, and I'll just say, if the FBI and the authorities in Utah end this investigation by declaring Tyler Robinson a lone gunman with no accomplices whatsoever, without having done, you know, a truly exhaustive investigation, you know, sort of like the one they did into January 6, that will not be adequate. They will risk further fracturing The United States along the lines of people who believe the story or wanna believe the story. I hate even to say that that could happen because, you know, it's my country, my government, I wanna trust the FBI, there's no reason to trust the FBI at all. At all. The institution of the FBI, no one's really been fired from FBI by the way. Everything that you think about the FBI undersells it. It's, and I'm quoting, 10 times worse than you think internally. Tell me what happened. How a guy who was by all appearances pretty normal kid wound up murdering a stranger just a couple years later. Like he was radicalized. If it turns out the FBI is not doing an adequate investigation, we should demand it.

they have a rifle, cartridges collected from the woods near the attack location, and footprints compared to the suspect’s shoes. the video was going to be the catalyst, and photographs or images from someone who knew him could reach out to law enforcement or, per the president, push him to turn himself in. multiple sources confirm a person of interest is in custody. a press conference has been slid back as authorities prepare to release information. the community has known that someone had viciously killed Charlie Kirk. police were confident there was no ongoing threat to the public, but there were many unknowns. they’re hopeful this will conclude the case; a name is confirmed by sources as the person in custody, but not released until officially. my sources are breathing a sigh of relief that this case has taken a dramatic turn for the better if this pans out.

I want to begin by saying that I'm very, very close with Charlie and his team, and here is the thing that I wish to relay to you from them: that there is some considerable evidence that there were state actors involved here. I extend my condolences and thoughts and prayers to the families affected by these actions. The mayor stated that we have detained someone of interest, but I respect them to protect the integrity of the investigation. The next process for us is what we do best in our detectives: to coordinate with the prosecutors, to collect evidence, to conduct interviews, and then, from there, when it is appropriate and accurate, to share more details with you all. I’m pleased to say that the mayor stated the collaboration between our federal partners, our different municipalities in the state is all hands on deck. When this is in the city that’s shaken the conscience, we know for a fact that we just step up. And the federal agents, our federal partners, I want to thank them for their assistance, but as well every single municipality, the state police and every other chief in the state. We came together as a small state. It impacted a lot of us, the incident that occurred. And so again, I’m just happy to share with you that we’re in the process now of coordinating with prosecution, conducting interviews and being able to collect evidence so that we can protect the integrity of the investigation and that we can hold the individuals accountable for their actions.

We think that Charlie Kirk just got shot in the neck. In real talk, I am not truly celebrating that he got shot in the neck. I think it's really sad for his family because I know he was a father. And if he does pass away from this, hopefully not, hopefully so, that is not good because bringing kids up in a broken family is never good. And gun violence, again, I think we should go back to having this conversation and who's allowed to have access to these guns because now public figures are getting shot left and right. I mean, it's not every other day, but truly, what a tragedy.

The Boston Marathon bomber, which happened in Downtown Boston during the Boston Marathon took five days, and there was a police officer who was killed in that manhunt. Luigi Mangione, who allegedly murdered an individual, the CEO of the health care company, in Downtown Manhattan in broad daylight took five days to find him. Our investigation is very much ongoing. But we've also Armstrong in an unusual thing put out publicly more information as to what we found because of it is of such public importance. The flip side of that is the social media people get involved and they come run with their crazy conspiracy theories because it makes them money. It gives them clickbait. And I don't work for them, and I don't respond to them. My duty is the American people. If there was anyone else involved in Charlie Kirk's murder, you can look at our record.
