My name is Leo Thomas. I'm a transgender woman, former college swimmer, and the first trans athlete to be named Division One NCAA champion. Swimming since I was five has taught me so much and given me opportunities to learn, grow, and connect with my peers. It breaks my heart to see trans kids lose out on these opportunities. The Department of Education has proposed a new Title IX rule regarding transgender athletes that would prohibit blanket bans on transgender kids, especially in grades K through eight. However, at the high school and college levels discrimination would not be prohibited under the guise of competitive fairness. This rule is a good start, but not enough. The trans community needs explicit protections from discrimination. Luckily, this rule is not final and we have thirty days to urge the Biden administration to amend the rule and grant equal protection for all transgender kids. Join me in commenting on this proposed rule and demanding equal protection for all transgender athletes.

As BIPOC women, we're tired of constantly advocating for white women, just as all women are tired of having to advocate for men. Women have taught me that there's no single definition of "woman" that excludes me without also excluding millions of cisgender women. Consider women born without a uterus, those with chromosomal differences, hormone imbalances, or facial hair. According to Boston Children's Hospital, one in five thousand women are born without a vagina. Therefore, you cannot exclude trans women without also denying the womanhood of many cisgender women. I challenge you to tell them to their faces that they are not women.

Some of you have even slept with men, so stop projecting onto me.

Lieutenant Rollins, Captain Merrill, and Corporal Davies were all cis white males. We thought Davies might be gay, but he married a woman, had 11 kids, and became an iron worker.

I want to share a personal message to show that being transgender doesn't hinder military service. I take my estrogen, blockers, and other medications, but it doesn't affect my ability to serve.

Transgender individuals currently serve in our military and deserve recognition for their contributions. However, there are concerns about integrating transgender women who have not transitioned into female barracks, as it may create discomfort among unit members. We can make accommodations for these individuals while also valuing their unique skills and specialties, especially given the current recruiting challenges. It is essential to focus on what benefits our nation and to welcome those who are willing and able to serve.

We humans are capable of incredible things, yet in 2023, when someone identifies as trans or non-binary, it often sparks fear and anger. Trans people are simply human, deserving of the freedom to be themselves without fear or hatred. When allowed to express our true selves, we can shine brilliantly. It's essential to show kindness and compassion, embracing visibility and understanding. Let us be who we are without fear.
