Those words reflect that there was some degree of evidence pointing to this individual, but that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed. Over the last 24 hours, leading into very recently, that evidence now points in a different direction. This means that this person of interest needs to be and should be released. It is unfortunate that this person’s name was leaked to the public, and it’s hard to put that back in the bottle. We will proceed very carefully here, because there is too much at stake for the victims of this horrific crime and their families to take chances with respect to this investigation. Deputy Andrew Nunez of the Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, who served five years in Rancho Cucamonga, was shot and pronounced deceased at 13:13 hours after responding to a domestic violence call. He was a six-year deputy. After the call, deputies rendered aid and their SWAT team secured the area in Rancho Cucamonga. The suspect fled on a motorcycle and was pursued by deputies with aerial support. The pursuit ended when an off-duty deputy sheriff, who went on duty, conducted a legal intervention by striking the suspect on the motorcycle, causing the motorcycle to go down. The allegations are serious, but I can't have a knee-jerk, politically motivated reaction. I need to do what's smart and right.
