Harold Lutnick, head of Cantor Fitzgerald, describes how he viewed business and life differently after the terrorist attack that struck while he was away on his son’s first day of kindergarten. He spoke with business correspondent Terry Keenan about the impact on his firm and the families impacted. Lutnick explains that Cantor Fitzgerald is focused on ensuring the 700 families who lost a member are cared for. He says he spent the day talking with their insurance company, CNA, which told their people that they would treat the deaths as accidental, and would double the policy for all of the victims upstairs and for everyone connected to the firm. This added $35,000,000 to the group upstairs. He notes, however, that while $35,000,000 sounds like a lot, dividing it by 700 people yields only about $50,000 per family, which he says is not enough and underscores the need to work on their foundation. Lutnick mentions that Cantor Fitzgerald has established the Cantor Fitzgerald Foundation to raise money for the victims and to ease their lives. He says the foundation will go to take care of and try to help the victims of the tragedy, with aims such as paying for health insurance long-term, providing additional financial support when possible, and making lives easier in various ways. He emphasizes that the foundation is intended to help the victims and their families, and he invites donations from anyone who can contribute. When asked about the needs of the young families, Lutnick details the demographics: the average employee is around 33 years old, most are newly married, with about a dozen women pregnant with babies who just lost their husbands. He notes there are more than a thousand, possibly 1,500, children who have now lost a parent and the breadwinner. He reiterates the commitment to raising money for the foundation to support these families and relieve some burdens related to health insurance and living expenses. Speaker 0: Probably the best known builder, particularly of of of great buildings in the city. There's a great deal of question about whether or not the damage and and the ultimate destruction of the buildings was caused by the airplanes, by architectural defect, or possibly by bombs or or aftershocks. Do you have any thoughts on that? Speaker 1: Well, it was an architectural defect. You know, the World Trade Center was always known as a very, very strong building. Don't forget, that took a big bomb in the basement. Now the basement is the most vulnerable place because that's your foundation, and it withstood that. And I got to see that area about three or four days after it took place because one of my structural engineers actually took me for a tour because he did the building. And I said, I can't believe it. The building was standing solid, and half of the columns were blown out. I mean, so this was an unbelievably powerful building. If you know anything about structure, it was one of the first buildings that was built from the outside. The steel, the reason the World Trade Center had such narrow windows is that in between all the windows, you had the steel on the outside. So you had the steel on the outside of the building. That's why when I first looked and you had big heavy I beams. When I first looked at it, I couldn't believe it because there was a hole in the steel. And this is steel that was you remember the the width of the windows in the World Trade Center folks? I think you you know, if you're ever up there, they were quite narrow. And in between was this heavy steel. I said, how could a plane, even a plane, even a seven sixty seven or seven forty seven or whatever it might have been, how could it possibly go through this deal? I happen to think that they had not only a plane, but they had bombs that exploded almost simultaneously because I just can't imagine anything being able to go through that wall. Most buildings are built with the steelers on the inside around the elevator shaft. This one was built from the outside, which is the strongest structure you can have, and it was almost just like a like a can of soup. Speaker 2: You know, Donald, we were looking at pictures all morning long of that plane coming into Building Number 2. And when you see that approach the far side and then all of a sudden, within a matter of millisecond, the explosion pops out the other side. Speaker 1: Right. I just think that there was a plane with more than just fuel. I think, obviously, they were very big planes. They were going very rapidly because I was also watching where the plane seemed to be not only going fast, it seemed to be coming down into the building. So it was getting the speed from going downhill, so to speak. It just seemed to me that to do that kind of destruction is even more than a big plane because you're talking about taking out steel, the heaviest caliber steel that was used on a building. I mean, these buildings were rock solid, And, you know, it's just an amazing it's an amazing thing. Speaker 3: And it's not right to call up and then extrapolate and connect him to 09:11 when he came out on the day of 09:11 and the day after on Fox and on CNN and said, I believe there had to be bombs in those buildings. It was brought down by explosives. A plane doesn't do that. And then described the architecture of Tower 1 and Tower 2. If he was an insider, he wouldn't have said that. People evacuated calmly, though you could see fear in their eyes and hear it in their voices. Once outside, a second explosion occurred, followed by a series of explosions. Emergency vehicles were present when debris fell on them, highlighting the unexpected nature of the structural damage. Now, eight hours later, the operation continues, and we can only speculate about the extent of the human toll caused by these explosions.

Stefanopoulos is down in Lower Manhattan today, George. There is surprisingly so little rubble where the towers stood. A volunteer, Robert Karlinski, explained to me the reason there's so little rubble: "the reason there's so little rubble is that all of it simply fell down into the ground and was pulverized, evaporated." Graphics show World Trade Center 1 rubble, and in the background, we can see Building 7 still frothing up into dust. "So we know it was before 05:20PM that day." The story that they shipped all that steel off to China just doesn't make sense. They were doing a bucket brigade for a while there, just moving stuff with buckets because they didn't wanna, you know, hurt any of the potential survivors under the rubble. In the book report from Ground 0, assistant chief firefighter Harry Myers says, "I never saw a file cabinet, never saw a desk, never saw a chair, never saw any type of office furniture. There is no glass. It just disappeared and has become part of this fluffy white or gray dust."

A volunteer, Robert Garlinski, explained that the rubble fell into the ground and was pulverized or evaporated. Dump trucks have been removing debris, including burned-out cars, since 6 AM. There is an increased military presence, including Humvees and National Guard divisions from the 69th, 258th, 105th, and 42nd divisions, primarily for crowd control and protection. Stefanopoulos noted that recovery workers have found very few bodies, believing they are buried deep within the rubble. Much of the buildings' structure was pulverized when the towers fell.
