There were Jews in Lebanon, in Syria, in Egypt, and Iraq. In July 1954, bombings targeted cinemas, libraries, and post offices in Cairo and Alexandria. On July 23, a bomb exploded prematurely, leading to the exposure of the spy ring. Egypt announced the arrest of a 13-man spy ring, concluding that Israeli Defense Secretary Pinchas Lavon ordered the operation. Two agents were acquitted, one unalived himself upon arrest, two more were unalived, and the rest received lengthy prison sentences. The affair damaged Israel's standing with the US and UK.
