Someone takes the life of a person because of their ideas or their ideals, then that very constitutional foundation is threatened. Now we have a person of interest in custody. The investigation is ongoing. But I want to make it crystal clear right now to whoever did this, we will find you. We will try you, and we will hold you accountable to the furthest extent of the law. And I just want to remind people that we still have the death penalty here in the state of Utah.

We, along with other senators, will press the Secret Service for answers. The American people deserve transparency. Past conspiracy theories have proven true, so we must uncover the truth of this situation.

Last night, there were dozens of Providence police officers working in the command post to develop leads in this difficult case, both because of the campus tragedy and the challenge of developing evidence. Our prosecutors—six in total—were there, and our victim services folks were at the hospital. This is what these investigations look like: sometimes you head in one direction, then you regroup and go in another. That has happened over the last 24 hours or so. Collectively, the team developed leads in multiple areas. One lead was chased to ground, leading to the detainment of a person of interest. Those words reflect that there was some degree of evidence pointing to this individual, but that evidence needed to be corroborated and confirmed. Over the last 24 hours, leading into very recently, that evidence now points in a different direction. This means that this person of interest needs to be and should be released. It is unfortunate that this person’s name was leaked to the public, and it’s hard to put that back in the bottle. We will proceed very carefully here, because there is too much at stake for the victims of this horrific crime and their families to take chances with respect to this investigation. Going forward, our team of prosecutors will be working with the Providence Police Department as the principal leads in this investigation. Our resources will be amplified by the state police, the FBI, the ATF, the DEA, the Marshal Service, and others as we develop leads and move toward justice in this case. This could happen very quickly, but it could also take some time.

Of course, I am concerned because we’ve all seen the FBI and the full way of the government come down on individuals who speak out. So that has me a little bit concerned, but I know the truth and the facts are on my side. I extend my condolences and thoughts and prayers to the families affected by these actions. The mayor stated that we have detained someone of interest, but I respect them to protect the integrity of the investigation. The next process for us is what we do best in our detectives: to coordinate with the prosecutors, to collect evidence, to conduct interviews, and then, from there, when it is appropriate and accurate, to share more details with you all. I’m pleased to say that the mayor stated the collaboration between our federal partners, our different municipalities in the state is all hands on deck. When this is in the city that’s shaken the conscience, we know for a fact that we just step up. And the federal agents, our federal partners, I want to thank them for their assistance, but as well every single municipality, the state police and every other chief in the state. We came together as a small state. It impacted a lot of us, the incident that occurred. And so again, I’m just happy to share with you that we’re in the process now of coordinating with prosecution, conducting interviews and being able to collect evidence so that we can protect the integrity of the investigation and that we can hold the individuals accountable for their actions.
