I served on the USS Liberty in 1967 when it was attacked by Israeli forces. 34 crewmen died, 171 were wounded. I believe the attack was planned, not accidental. The Israelis strafed us with jets and torpedo boats. Our ship had 50 caliber machine guns, but many men were killed. The torpedo hit the communication spaces. I think Israel and our government knew about the attack. I remember the fallen crewmen every Memorial Day.
