Every time I refer to the group to an unlearned audience, I write "Houthis" in quotation marks. "Houthis" is a derogatory tribalist term heralding from the early days of the first Saadah wars back in 2004. Saleh used it to discredit the movement's wide national appeal. The movement itself has rejected the term because they reject the notion that they're a tribalist movement. 'Houth' is a town in Yemen's Amran Governorate. Not everyone from the movement is from that town, and not everyone from the movement belongs to the Houthi branch of the Hamdan tribe. The official name of the movement is 'Ansarallah' - 'Partisans of God'. They subscribe to no particular ideology and are horizontally organized. The movement is composed of people from all tribal federations and of all political orientations.
