AAG Dhillon argues civil rights didn’t go far enough and the DOJ must stand up for all Americans, praising Trump and DOJ leadership, and supporting Todd Blanche as Acting AG. SpudisRobert replies that fair, black-and-white rules are essential; Democrats allegedly destroy the institution’s integrity, and clarity and order are needed for a thriving society.

@AAGDhillon - AAGHarmeetDhillon

I don’t think civil rights “went too far” — they didn’t go far enough and the DOJ didn’t stand up for ALL Americans. Thanks to @realDonaldTrump and with the support of our DOJ leadership — NOW WE DO! As to next steps, I look forward to supporting @DAGToddBlanche as Acting AG!!

Meet the woman who thinks civil rights went too far. Harmeet Dhillon has spent a year trying to turn the Justice Department in the opposite direction. Now the online right wants to see her as attorney general. https://www.politico.com/news/2026/04/06/harmeet-dhillon-doj-ag-california-00855561?_sp_pass_consent=true

@AAGDhillon @realDonaldTrump @DAGToddBlanche Applied fairly across the board is what we want. We can operate when we know the rules. They must be black and white. Democrats add to the confusion and destroy the integrity of the institution. That was their goal all along. Clarity and order make for a thriving society. https://t.co/FJnsiPm6FD

The speaker states that there is no dispute: the conduct of our elections, the way government comes into power, is a national security issue, and the security of our elections is incredibly important. The speaker says they are comforted as a citizen and as someone at the Department of Justice by the fact that national security eyes are on this, as well as criminal and civil rights review. They add that, at the end of the day, as a voter themselves and someone involved in politics before taking the job, they like every citizen to vote. They note that a lot of people don’t vote, don’t have confidence, and don’t care. It is important that people have confidence in, accept the outcome of the elections, and also be more likely to vote. The speaker concludes that this is a very good thing, whoever they’re voting for.

Speaker 0: You just announced the official civil rights investigation into the Portland Police Bureau. What can you tell us about your investigation thus far? Speaker 1: Well, thank you for having me today, and this is indeed the type of rapid response that Americans have gotten used to from our of justice under Pam Bondi. She called me this morning about this. I'd already been following the case and within a couple of hours we'd opened up our investigation. So here's the background. Portland Police Department has absolutely failed to protect the people of Portland going back well over a decade. They've been in the crosshairs of the S. Department of Justice dating back to 2010. A federal consent decree was actually issued against Portland's police department in 2012. They tried to delay it up by a couple of years, but it went into effect eleven years ago in 2014. Since that time, as we've all seen on the television, there have been numerous riots with Antifa over the last five years. And while Portland was temporarily sort of in the about to get out of the consent decree phase, because of its failure to properly arrest people, document what was happening on the streets, keep people safe, they haven't gotten out from under the consent decree. So what we're doing today is actually under the purview of an existing federal consent decree over bad police practices. We issued a very detailed letter this morning demanding to know why a journalist was arrested, why a second journalist, Katie Davis Court, who was viciously assaulted earlier this week, where the police had the assailants temporarily in custody and let them go and did nothing about it. Why does it seem like the Portland police are actually working for antifa as opposed to the people of Portland?

Speaker 0: Hi. Assistant Attorney General Harmit Dillon here on a Friday. The United States Department of Justice, like the rest of the government, is, under shutdown orders, but those of us charged with law and order and safety are still on the job, pay or not. And today I had the pleasure of talking with both Nick Sorter, the journalist who was attacked in Portland yesterday and then arrested there, oddly enough. And also the attorney general, Pam Bondi, my boss, about what is happening in Portland and the urgent need for federal civil rights investigation over there. So we promptly moved to open up that federal civil rights investigation. Portland is already under a federal consent decree for its failed police practices. It has been for over a decade now. And our very detailed demands for information are requiring body cam information and details about why, multiple journalists have been attacked there in Portland and the police seem to do nothing about it. And I personally have litigated in Portland about, journalist Andy Ngo being viciously attacked there while the police again did nothing about it. And now the National Guard is being activated in Portland, thanks to our president's leadership. And so we're going to ask folks to stay tuned and have faith. United States Department of Justice civil rights division is extremely aggressive in protecting the rights of American citizens in protecting the first amendment and in ensuring that police practices in The United States are not discriminatory in violation of federal law. And it is about time that Portland residents and people in Oregon felt safe from the scourge of Antifa and the violence there and frankly from the scourge of lax and unacceptable police practice. So, follow along and we will keep everyone posted as we go forward in this situation. Thank you.

Speaker 1 outlines a plan to revisit all 50 states and 'clean up voter rolls' and 'ensure as best they can that people are citizens when they're registering to vote in a federal election.' He notes letters have been sent to states under two statutes: 'Help America Vote Act' and 'NVRA, National Voter Registration Act.' States must maintain data, keep rules up to date, and have procedures for federal registrations to safeguard citizenship. He says many states are 'sloppy, cutting corners, not doing this, certainly not doing the list maintenance required,' and not properly ensuring people are on the rolls. The goal is that 'every citizen, whatever their party, whatever their views are, they should feel confident in the outcome of the election.'

Speaker 0: In your announcement, you did say that the that your office and the Trump DOJ is going to revisit all 50 states and start doing things like cleaning up voter rolls, going through and making sure that every state is compliant with voter laws, something that we, I guess, have not been doing for the last six decades? Speaker 1: Right. So we have sent out a number of letters to states, under two federal statutes. We administer different statutes, Help America Vote Act and NVRA, National Voter Registration Act. And so these acts have different purposes and different rules, but basically states are required to maintain certain data. They're required to keep their voter rules generally up to date, and they're required to have certain procedures whereby people are registered for federal elections to safeguard and ensure as best they can that people are citizens when they're registering to vote in a federal election. And so we're finding that a lot of states are being very sloppy, cutting corners, not doing this, certainly not doing the list maintenance required, and also, in some cases, also not properly ensuring that people are getting on the voter rolls correctly in the first place. So we we need to clean that up because as an American and as a civil rights lawyer, I wanna make sure that every citizen, whatever their party, whatever their, you know, views are, they should feel confident in the outcome of the election. And too many millions of Americans today don't feel confident. And in part, they don't feel confident because we have sloppy voter rolls. We have sloppy maintenance requirements in these different states. And that means it's deterring some people from voting. It's making people challenge the outcome of elections. So there are a lot of problems with this.

The civil rights division regularly reviews compliance of states with the Voting Rights Act. The act's body of law has been built up by court challenges, mainly by the left. The left has used the courts to sue over lines and draw minority districts. Some states have drawn minority districts—coalition districts relying on minority groups plus crossover votes from liberal white Americans to produce a presumed Democrat safe seat. The Fifth Circuit ruled last year that these majority minority districts could be challenged; they aren't necessarily legal, and who had standing to challenge them. We sent a letter to Texas noting their lines appear to be out of compliance in at least four districts. With public admissions about inaccurate undercounting of Texas in the census, you have a recipe where it seems appropriate for Texas to call for that redistricting. Some Texas legislators went on the run to Illinois.

Speaker 0: Tell me what the genesis of that was and what it was about. Well, we're regularly charged the civil rights division with reviewing compliance of states with the Voting Rights Act, which has a, you know, fairly elaborate body of law that has been built up by court challenges, mainly by the left, by the way. The left has used the courts to go in and sue over lines and draw minority districts. And some states have drawn what's called, you know, minority districts that are so called coalition districts that either rely on one or more minority groups plus crossover votes from liberal white Americans to, you know, achieve a particular outcome that's presumed to be, you know, a a Democrat, safe democrat seat. And the, fifth circuit, which in which Texas is, ruled last year in a case that these majority minority districts could be challenged. They aren't, necessarily legal and who had standing to challenge them. So we sent a letter to Texas noting that their lines appear to be out of compliance at least these four districts. When you have four districts that are wrong and you add that to their own analysis and public admissions about inaccurate undercounting of Texas in the census that was concluded at the, you know, a couple of years ago, you have a recipe where it seems appropriate for Texas to call for that redistricting. But some Texas legislators are so desperate to avoid doing their jobs and complying with federal law that they went on the run to Illinois, of all places, which is also among the most gerrymandered and ludicrous places.

AAG Dhillon emphasized that religious freedom is a fundamental right protected by the Constitution, responding to Washington State's law that targeted Catholic priests and the seal of Confession. He argued that forcing clergy to violate their faith is both unconscionable and unconstitutional, a stance supported by a federal court's preliminary injunction against the law. Dhillon asserted that no government entity has the authority to infringe upon the First Amendment, pledging to defend Americans' rights to worship freely under his leadership.

@AAGDhillon - AAGHarmeetDhillon

Religious freedom is not a privilege granted by government, it is a fundamental right guaranteed by the Constitution. When Washington State passed a law targeting Catholic priests and the sacred seal of Confession, @CivilRights took action.

@AAGDhillon - AAGHarmeetDhillon

Forcing clergy to violate core tenets of their faith is not only unconscionable, it’s unconstitutional. The federal court agreed, issuing a preliminary injunction that protects priests from this anti-religious law.
