Gusty winds are hampering recovery efforts in the Potomac River after a tragic collision. An Army Blackhawk helicopter on a training mission collided with an American Airlines flight, killing all 67 on board. The bodies of both Black Hawk pilots have been recovered. The NTSB is investigating, revealing the commercial jet was operating at 325 feet just before the crash. The victims include the airline passengers and crew, as well as the three soldiers aboard the helicopter: Ryan Austin O'Hara, Andrew Lloyd Eaves, and Rebecca Lobach. Air traffic control instructed the jet to land on a shorter runway and alerted the Black Hawk to the plane's approach. The NTSB interviewed the air traffic controller involved. Investigators hope the black boxes reveal critical information about the final moments in both cockpits, specifically if the pilots were aware of the impending collision and if there was any confusion.

Following a drone attack that killed three US soldiers in Jordan and wounded 40 others, the US is preparing retaliatory strikes against Iran-backed militants. President Biden stated he holds Iran responsible for supplying the weapons used in the attack, but does not seek a wider war in the Middle East. The response, according to a US official, will strike multiple targets over several days, focusing on facilities that enabled the drone attack, primarily inside Syria, but likely avoiding direct strikes on Iran itself. One of the Iranian-backed groups, Khatab Hezbollah, claims it is suspending attacks on US forces, but the Pentagon says actions speak louder than words. President Biden spoke with the families of the fallen soldiers: Sergeant William Rivers, Sergeant Brianna Moffett, and Sergeant Kennedy Sanders. Moffett and Sanders were posthumously promoted to the rank of sergeant.

Speaker 0: Turning now to the assassination attempt of former president Trump. Chilling new images tonight taken by local police snipers show Thomas Crooks was on their radar an hour before the shooting, and officers may have been able to stop him 6 minutes before he opened fire. Here's ABC's chief justice correspondent, Pierre Thomas. Speaker 1: These are the new images law enforcement took that helped set off a search for Thomas Matthew Crooks less than an hour before he tried to assassinate Donald Trump. With it, a backpack and duffel bag. 532, a sniper spotting Crooks looking at news feeds on his phone, noticing he had a rangefinder, a device used to determine distances to targets. That sniper flagging the suspicious activity in a group text, receiving a response to call into command. At 5:41, that sniper's sending out a description of crooks, looking around the building.
