Gavin Newsom disbanded Team Blaze, a volunteer firefighting unit, in early 2024, leaving the California National Guard unable to respond effectively to wildfires in Los Angeles. Team Blaze had been a cost-effective force, trained and equipped through charitable donations. However, the Newsom administration prohibited these donations, leading to the team's shutdown. As a result, the National Guard had to send soldiers for training after the fires began, delaying their response by ten days. Former Team Blaze leader Jay Coggan expressed that the unit could have significantly aided in the firefighting efforts.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

NEW: Gavin Newsom disbanded a highly trained team of certified firefighters in early 2024 — a move that left his National Guard incapable of sending a complete firefighting force to Los Angeles until 10 days after the fires broke out. This story is wild, read this🧵to the end

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

First, some background. The California State Guard is an all-volunteer militia force that reports directly to Newsom, its commander in chief. In 2020, the State Guard launched Team Blaze. It was an on-call strike force staffed entirely with certified volunteer firefighters, all at virtually no cost to the state. Team Blaze was effective. It battled the 2021 Dixie Fire, the largest single-source wildfire in California state history. The team also performed search-and-rescue missions during that fire.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Team Blaze came at virtually no cost to California. Its certified volunteer firefighters attended regular trainings at their own expense. An outside charity procured much of the team's firefighting equipment at no cost to the state. California only paid Team Blaze when it was activated to fight a fire.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

But in 2023, the Newsom administration barred Team Blaze from receiving free firefighting equipment from its charitable benefactor. You read that right: the Newsom administration in 2023 deemed it illegal for an outside charity to provide free firefighting equipment to the certified volunteer firefighters under Newsom's command. More on this later in the thread.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

In 2024, the Newsom administration shut down Team Blaze. Team Blaze had to return its equipment to the state, most its firefighters quit, and those that remained were transferred to serve as reserves for another unit called Task Force Rattlesnake.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Task Force Rattlesnake maintains a standing force of "hotshot" Type I handcrews trained to carry out the most dangerous wildfire duties. Type I handcrews put out wildfires where they stand, but they count on the support of Type II handcrews working behind them to prevent the fires from spreading further.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Team Blaze maintained a standing force of Type II handcrews. And when the Newsom admin disbanded Team Blaze, the California National Guard was left with no standing force of Type II handcrews. They simply didn't exist when the flames broke out in Los Angeles on Jan. 7.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

As Los Angeles burned, the California National Guard sent 200 soldiers to Camp Roberts—situated 220 miles north of the burning city—to be trained how to perform the duties of a Type II handcrew. Those 200 soldiers didn't arrive in Los Angeles until Jan. 17 — some 10 days after the fires broke out.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

The California National Guard posted these facts in a now-deleted Facebook post on Jan. 17. But that's okay, because the @FreeBeacon saved the video before the Newsom administration deleted it. You can watch it here.

We gathered at Van Nuys, California, our headquarters for the 1st of 143rd FA, before heading to Camp Roberts for a week of training with CAL FIRE to become a type 2 hand crew. It's fulfilling to assist our communities, especially during disasters, and it's vital for the state to have these resources available. As the officer in charge of crew 502, I ensure our team is well-trained and ready for our mission. The training can be dangerous, but it’s rewarding to know the community relies on the National Guard. I'm proud to serve both my community and my team.

Speaker 0: So, currently, we mustered at Van Nuys, California. That's where our our, headquarters is for the 1st of 1 43rd FA. From there, we transported to Camp Roberts, and we spent about a week training with the, CAL FIRE. They're learning how to become a type 2 hand crew. I think that that's a great role for the National Guard. It's a great feeling to be able to help out the communities. Unfortunately, it usually is on the eve of a disaster that we get involved like this, but it's great for the state to have these resources to, allow us to come into our own communities and help people that are in need. Speaker 1: My role here to help support the fires during the fire mission is I'm an OIC, so I'm the officer in charge for crew 502. And even to this day, we're still training, making sure everybody knows how to be in the front and ready to do the tasks that are needed to complete the mission. It's it's a little scary sometimes because the training that we do get is very is very dangerous, but it's a huge reward knowing that the community knows that they can rely on the National Guard and that I can be of service not only to my community, to my Joes. I'm happy to be here and we're happy to help.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

The founder of Team Blaze, former State Guard commanding general Jay Coggan, said the unit could have been on the ground in Los Angeles within hours of the fire's outbreak if it hadn't been disbanded in 2024. "Our people were already trained to do this," Coggan said. "They could have done a lot. Not only could they have responded quickly, they could have made the regular firefighters more mobile. They could have brought water up to some of the houses and the hills. They could have rescued people. There’s a lot they could have done."

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Team Blaze's days were numbered after Newsom appointed Major Gen. Matt Beevers to serve as acting Adjutant General of the California National Guard in August 2022. Beevers was no fan of Coggan, allegedly referring to him as a "kike lawyer" during a private June 2022 conversation I reported last year. https://freebeacon.com/california/this-powerful-california-general-was-credibly-accused-of-anti-semitism-gavin-newsom-gave-him-a-promotion/

This Powerful California General Was Credibly Accused of Anti-Semitism. Gavin Newsom Gave Him a Promotion. California governor Gavin Newsom (D.) pledged in October 2022 to combat anti-Semitism "wherever it rears its ugly head." But when a powerful California National Guard general was credibly accused of denigrating a Jewish subordinate as a "kike" lawyer, Newsom's Military Department dismissed the allegations on a technicality, and the governor promoted the alleged perpetrator, Matthew Beevers, to lead the state's National Guard. freebeacon.com

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Beevers cut a critical line of funding for Team Blaze in January 2023, issuing a ruling prohibiting it from accepting "gifts" from the California State Guard Foundation. The foundation was a charity run by Coggan that provided firefighting equipment for the force and covered the training costs for its volunteers — no strings attached and all at no cost to the state. That Beevers ruling can be read in full below.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

The "gifts" from Coggan's charity include a $13,600 payment in December 2022 to cover the cost to train Team Blaze firefighters to operate its five firefighting engines. Here's the invoice for that charitable "gift."

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

To Beevers, "gifts" such as these were illegal. The Cal. National Guard told me last year that the State Guard, and by extension Team Blaze, "had previously accepted funds illegally" from Coggan's charity. "This practice was stopped by Major General Beevers," they said.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Let that sink in: The Newsom administration is proud that it barred a charity from providing free firefighting training and equipment to the certified volunteer firefighting force that Newsom once commanded.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Beevers, in his January 2023 ruling, said the State Guard and Team Blaze could only convey contributions through a separate fund he controlled. But not long after, the Beevers-controlled fund refused to accept a $137,680 contribution from Coggan’s charity to finance a scheduled training for members of Team Blaze and the State Guard. Details on that training and what it aimed to accomplish in the screenshots below.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

This training was supposed to improve California's "ability to respond to State emergencies." But it had to be cancelled after Beevers and the Newsom administration refused to accept the funds. Coggan explained why he had to cancel this training in the letter below.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Now, the Newsom admin says Team Blaze was ineffective because it had "little to no funding for equipment and maintenance." That's because Beevers and the admin deemed it illegal for Team Blaze to receive free financial assistance from its charitable benefactor.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Coggan, who retired from the State Guard in May 2023 after Beevers blocked his charity from providing free firefighting equipment to Team Blaze, said he could have had a standing force of 1,000 firefighters by now if he had support from the Newsom administration.

Speaker 0: If you had to give me a sentence, what is the sentence saying? Speaker 1: Once I told him about his respectfully and in the email about his lack of leadership and the fact that he wanted to do things with grants that were impossible. And I kept telling him, like, we can't do that in questioning stuff. He would take me off projects, tell people I wasn't doing what I was supposed to because I questioned him. Because I understood. I helped write that grant. I knew what was in that grant. He told everybody in front of Crystal, Deontay, everybody. We're gonna get Macbooks, we're gonna do that. We're gonna get swag. We're gonna use it for travel. I said, you cannot do that. It's a very, very specific grant. Took me off. I questioned junior DA. There's kids in there from out of the the, the county, all this. Took me off junior DA. I did not to do it, he made it look as if I wasn't doing what I needed to do because I questioned him. Because I knew for a fact, mister Cusi respectfully did not know what he was doing. Period. Speaker 0: So I respect that as your assessment. It was clear to me that you and miss Cuppy were not getting along. And I'm not saying that your assessment is wrong. I want you to really listen to the words I'm saying. Speaker 1: Pussy, and this is my personal opinion to one woman to another is dangerous to your administration. He tells people, when I reached out to you, he told me, oh, you think your word is safe? Exactly when you reached out to miss, Willis, she called me and told me. She told me everything. So once you reach out to her, she's gonna reach back out to me. So I didn't even go to HR. He put Dexter's name on my PDP and I didn't even feel safe going to anybody. Speaker 0: Can I tell you something? Mhmm. I have 3 supervisors that have failed in the field. What's interesting to me because I'm in learning for a term, they each pretend to have a relationship with me that they do not have. I guess that's an intimidate to tactic. Mhmm. I'm sorry that you felt that way, but you would that's just certainly don't have no relationship with, right, Michael Cuffy. You were safe to go those places.

In the call, Willis said her aide, Michael Cuffee, had failed her administration. Cuffee served as Willis's social media manager during her 2020 campaign. She thanked him by name in her victory speech. Cuffee told me he left the DA's office in Dec. 2021 for "personal" reasons.

@AndrewKerrNC - Andrew Kerr

Timpson said there's a clear pattern in Willis's conduct. "My case and Nathan Wade's case are very similar when you break them down point by point," the whistleblower said. "Ethical violations, abuse of power, and the misuse of county, state, and federal funds."
