Futurism This brings us to Francisco Ribera (1537-1591) - a Jesuit leader in the area of Theology, who began writing a long expose or commentary, a few years before he died, on the events in the book of Revelation. His documentary, In Sacrum Beati Ioannis Apostoli, & Evangelistiae Apocalypsin Commentarij, was published about a year before he died. Ribera's account of the events in Revelation successfully take the focus off of the Catholic Church, pointing toward the future, being a literal three and a half years at the very end. How very convenient for the Papacy. This interpretation would fully suspend ALL prophecies occurring in the middle ages. 32. There was also Manuel De Lacunza (1731-1801), a Jesuit priest who resided in Chile. Around the year 1791, he put together a manuscript called La Venida del Mesias en Gloria y Magestad ("The Coming of the Messiah in Glory and Majesty"), where he took on the pen name of Juan Josafa (Rabbi) Ben-Ezra. Using the typical Jesuit tactic of trickery and deceit, 33. Lacunza used a Jewish name and title to completely hide the fact that he was a Catholic Jesuit priest, thus creating much more acceptance from Protestantism - who still slightly had a bad taste for the Papacy at the time. In his work, Lacunza (Ben-Ezra) showed his advocacy for Futurism, proposing that the Antichrist was still to come in the future 34. Edward Irving (1792-1834) was a Scottish Presbyterian who was very important in the movement of the propagation of Futurism.
