Good reminder that “bioethics” is a complete sham of a field, its name an instance of Orwellian doublespeak obscuring some of the most unethical, anti-human ideas imaginable. Here’s Matthew Liao in 2016, casually floating the idea of using “human engineering” (i.e. bioweapons) to make people allergic to beef—for the climate of course. He has also suggested: - engineering babies in utero to make them physically smaller via hormone therapy or genetic modification - hormone treatments to make people more “cooperative” in the fight against climate change - driving down birth rates via “cognitive enhancement” drugs like Ritalin and Modafinil, because of negative correlation between intelligence and fertility On the AI front, in his most recent book and several articles on the subject, Liao argued a superintelligent “rightsholding” AI could one day attain “greater than human-level moral status.” Liao is director of bioethics at NYU and associate of the World Science Forum, with links to the WEF.
