I strongly condemn conspiracy theories about COVID-19's origins. However, I've seen emails revealing that many virologists privately debated the lab origin while publicly dismissing it. It’s troubling that even esteemed scientists can overlook the possibility of lab accidents. Acknowledging this doesn't diminish their intelligence or virtue; it merely reflects reality. I question why investigating a lab accident is deemed immoral while market spillover isn't. The recent FOIA revelations show a disconnect between public statements and private concerns among experts.

@TheLancet @emilyakopp It is sorrowful to see FOIAs reveal virologist after virologist privately debating a lab #OriginOfCovid while publicly condemning any suggestion of an unnatural origin as a conspiracy theory. Why can't we admit that even the most talented & charming scientists can make mistakes?

@TheLancet @emilyakopp This is where one esteemed infectious diseases expert (also recently passed away) says, in an email, that being a brilliant and charming scientist does not rule out the possibility of an accidental infection in the lab.

Saying that it's plausible an outbreak started because of a lab accident says nothing about that scientist's humanity, virtue or intelligence. It also does not necessarily mean that the biosafety levels in the lab had to be subpar. SARS1 escaped from a top BSL4 lab before.

I don't understand why it's immoral to suggest and investigate a lab accident, but not immoral to similarly suggest and investigate a market spillover.

Reading @janeqiuchina's piece in @techreview the scientific arguments are not new or robust. imo the biggest question it poses is: Is it immoral or geopolitical to push for an #OriginOfCovid investigation, specifically an accidental lab escape, when it targets a nice person?

Many of these private exchanges among top experts - some who condemned lab #OriginOfCovid in public but worried about a lab leak in private - are only coming to light about 2 years later due to FOIA efforts by the @USRightToKnow https://usrtk.org/biohazards-blog/u-s-virologist-cleared-testimony-with-wuhan-lab/
