I sat through a 2-hour briefing on the Iran War. Briefings are closed; I can’t disclose classified details, but the plan is incoherent. Key takeaways: 1) the goals don’t include destroying Iran’s nuclear program. 2) regime change isn’t on the list. 3) aims seem to be destroying missiles, boats, and drone factories, with no plan for what happens if they restart production. 4) more bombing hinted, i.e., endless war. 5) no plan for the Strait of Hormuz, leaving it unsafe.

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public. I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are. 1/ Here's what I can share:

@ChrisMurphyCT - Chris Murphy 🟧

2/ Maybe the lead is that the war goals DO NOT involve destroying Iran's nuclear weapons program. This is, uh...surprising...since Trump says over and over this is a key goal. But then of course we already know air strikes can't wipe out their nuclear material.

@ChrisMurphyCT - Chris Murphy 🟧

3/ Second, they confirmed "regime change" is also NOT on the list. So, they are going to spend hundreds of billions of your taxpayer dollars, get a whole bunch of Americans killed, and a hardline regime - probably a MORE anti-American hardline regime - will still be in charge.

@ChrisMurphyCT - Chris Murphy 🟧

4/ Ok, so what ARE the goals? It seems, primarily, destroying lots of missiles and boats and drone factories. But the question that stumped them: what happens when you stop bombing and they restart production? They hinted at more bombing. Which is, of course, endless war.

@ChrisMurphyCT - Chris Murphy 🟧

5/ And on the Strait of Hormuz, they had NO PLAN. I can't go into more detail about how Iran gums up the Strait, but suffice it say, right now, they don't know how to get it safely back open. Which is unforgiveable, because this part of the disaster was 100% foreseeable.

Insurers in Connecticut just announced that rates will go up 16.8% - the highest increase in years. The reason for the huge jump? Simple - the Trump/Republican budget bill that slashed health care. Incredibly, the same bill that gave billionaires a juicy tax cut. https://t.co/M0zYbSASnK

Health care insurance rates under the Affordable Care Act in Connecticut are going up by 16.8%. This is the highest number in years and it's gonna mean that there are a lot of families in Connecticut who now won't be able to afford health insurance who are now gonna be uninsured. These rates are going up because Donald Trump chose to push your rates up. They wrote a bill, Republicans and Donald Trump earlier this year, that slashed the support that goes to families who buy Affordable Care Act plans. in Connecticut, that's about a quarter of a million people. So you just need to know that these rates didn't need to go up by this much. Donald Trump is choosing for you to pay more on health care. Speaker 0: So some really terrible but expected news today. Health care insurance rates under the Affordable Care Act in Connecticut are going up by 16.8%. That's a huge number, 16.8%. It's the highest number in years and it's gonna mean that there are a lot of families in Connecticut who now won't be able to afford health insurance who are now gonna be uninsured. For others, they'll pay that 16.8% increase but, you know, they're gonna have to buy less food. They're gonna have to skimp on school supplies and Christmas gifts. This is really terrible. And here's the worst part about it. It's a choice. These rates are going up because Donald Trump chose to push your rates up. They wrote a bill, Republicans and Donald Trump earlier this year, that slashed the support that goes to families who buy Affordable Care Act plans. And in Connecticut, that's about a quarter of a million people. The tariffs are also resulting in health care costs going up and all the other changes that Republicans made in that bill, including throwing 17,000,000 people off of their health care, that impacts rates as well. So you just need to know that these rates didn't need to go up by this much. Donald Trump is choosing for you to pay more on health care. Meanwhile, that same bill is giving a new massive tax cut to his billionaire friends. The richest Americans are gonna get a $270,000 tax cut out of this bill. The same bill that is raising your rates for health insurance by 16%. Corporations in this country are gonna get a giant new tax break, a big windfall. The same bill that's raising your health care rates by 16%. We're gonna fight all of this. We're gonna try to, abate this harm as best we can, but you need to know what's going on. You need to understand that these massive rate increases in Connecticut are due to Donald Trump's policies.

Republicans tried to pass a bill tonight to address the fake "immigrant crime wave" that does not exist and is made up by Republicans to breed fear and resentment of immigrants. I went to the floor to object. Here's what I said. https://t.co/Y8lCewMV2t

Video Transcript AI Summary
Immigrants commit crimes at a lower rate than natural-born citizens. Statistically, a town or neighborhood is safer with immigrants because they commit violent crimes less often than people born in the United States. The speaker objects to the bill, stating it feeds a false narrative that the country should fear families coming to the United States fleeing economic desperation, violence, terror, or torture in search of a better life.

Speaker 0: The facts are this. Whether you choose to want to believe the facts or not, that is not my decision. It's your decision. But immigrants commit crimes in this country at a rate lower than natural born citizens. You may not believe that if you watch Fox News every night, but I hate to tell you, it is the truth. So if you want a safe town or a safe neighborhood, you're better off. You are statistically safer if you have immigrants because they commit crimes of violence at a rate lower than people who are born in The United States. So I don't know why we're being asked to vote on this bill because it doesn't do anything other than feed this idea, this false narrative that this country has something to fear from families that are coming to The United States fleeing either economic desperation or violence or terror or torture for a better life. And for that reason, I object.

Trump toadies are going to attack the jury and the court because they have a plan to dismantle our democracy and it relies on everyone believing the justice system is rigged. It isn’t. Donald Trump committed a crime. He got caught. He got convicted. That’s the rule of law.

Newsflash: It matters that the Republican nominee for President is a convicted criminal. The rule of law still matters. And this won’t be his last conviction. He’s committed multiple crimes and he’s going to be convicted multiple times. He can never be President again.

It’s simple. He broke the law. He got caught. He got convicted. Is this crime as serious as the others he committed? No. But the rule of law applies to everyone. And this won’t be the last conviction.
