We spoke with Lana Payne from Uniform about the potential shutdown of the auto industry due to new tariffs. The government has the necessary tools to support workers and businesses without needing parliament in session, including employment insurance and financial assistance through Crown Corporations. Meetings with major banks are underway to discuss support for affected sectors. If the situation worsens, the government will take necessary actions. However, opposition parties are pushing for an election, which could delay parliamentary sessions. The focus should be on supporting communities and businesses rather than political theatrics. While the current situation is serious, it differs from the COVID-19 shutdowns, and the government is prepared to assist if needed.

Speaker 0: We spoke to Lana Payne last night who heads up Uniform. Obviously, represents a number of tens of thousands of auto workers across the country. We spoke to a number of different auto, industry representatives who all said that the auto industry literally will shut down in the next week following the imposition of these tariffs. How far are you prepared to go to support those workers, and doesn't parliament need to be in session to make that happen? Speaker 1: So, again, 2 questions. The last question, no. We believe that the government has the instruments necessary to support workers and Canadian businesses, in the current context of what we did last night, what we can do with programs like employment insurance, what we can do with what I can do in terms of providing liquidity, financial assistance to businesses through the Crown Corporations, Export Development Canada, Business Development Canada. There's a lot of instruments. I know that, the deputy minister of finance, the governor of the Bank of Canada are meeting the leaders of Canada's 6 biggest banks today, to decide and to discuss with them what instruments are necessary to support sectors of the economy to the example of the auto sector that will be hard hit. So we'll be there to support these businesses. We think we have all the instruments and the, programs available to do so. Speaker 0: What if, though, mister, with all respect, you you do need to come to parliament to have, you know, extraordinary measures, like, during the pandemic, like CERB, like, whatever it happens to be. I mean, we're talking about an entire industry, the backbone of, the most populous province in this country who could which could collapse in a week. And are you really telling Canadians that their parliamentarians shouldn't be debating, discussing, representing them, in deciding how to best address this? And what message does that send to the US? Speaker 1: We'll make all the decisions necessary to support workers and businesses. So if that circumstance that you described turns out to be the case, obviously, we would do what is necessary. We So you're Speaker 0: not gonna avoid it just to stave off an election, to be clear? Speaker 1: But but, again, there there in lies the contradiction. The opposition parties have vowed at the first opportunity to cause an election. That's a guaranteed way to make sure that parliament doesn't meet for 2 or 3 more months. So they can't have it both ways. You can't say hurry up, hurry up, bring parliament back because we wanna have an election, which would mean that parliament would not Speaker 0: be Timing is essentially essentially set off by the prime minister deciding at the point he did to vacate his position. I mean, it's not the opposition's fault that he waited until he did. Speaker 1: Well, I don't the issue is, does the government have the necessary instruments and programs to support sectors of the economy and workers? The answer is yes. The politics of people parading around the foyer of the House of Commons with manufactured outrage, that's you've been around long enough, Ashley. That's a whole separate conversation. The focus that we think parliament and parliamentarians should have is what they can do in their communities, to, frankly, give voice to the business leaders and to the workers that are concerned about this. And you have 13 premiers and a federal government that have said they'll work together to do what's necessary. I have not I think we should be careful not to talk about a COVID like circumstance. Some people have done that. I haven't done that. COVID is where the government of Canada shut down entire sectors, of the economy for a public health emergency. But, Speaker 0: I mean, entire sectors of the economy could be shut down because of this. Speaker 1: Absolutely. And the government will be there to support them.

Speaker 0: There are disturbing reports in many countries in all regions about discrimination related to COVID nineteen. We're going to protect vaccinated workers from unvaccinated coworkers. Speaker 1: But don't think you can get on a plane or a train vaccinated people and put them at risk. Speaker 2: There's people that don't want this mandatory vaccine. How do we manage it? Speaker 3: Well, then they won't be Speaker 4: to work. That's the 2 different classes of people. If you're vaccinated or if you're unvaccinated, you have all these rights. I wouldn't wanna be in the room with lots of people who aren't vaccinated. Speaker 2: Because frankly, we know that we can't trust the unvaccinated. Speaker 7: The honor system As to whether somebody has been vaccinated, do you want them breathing in your face on the strength of their honor? Speaker 8: Mandates around vaccination are an absolute last resort. Speaker 0: Austria has become the 1st European country to mandate coronavirus vaccinations For all adults. Speaker 5: The US president deciding to focus on vaccine mandates. Speaker 1: The vaccine mandate has kicked in. Daniel Andrews is extending the vaccine mandate. The Speaker 5: government has already mandated vaccination across workforces. Speaker 1: Enforcement measures in place will make sure that everyone is vaccinated. Speaker 8: Mandate should never contribute to increasing social inequalities. Speaker 1: A premier of Quebec Francois Legault Announcing a Canadian first that the province is looking to implement a special tax on the unvaccinated. Speaker 8: In access to health and social services. Speaker 9: A woman from Alberta, Canada has died after she was refused an organ transplant Because she refused the COVID vaccination. He mentions the promise made by the Prime Minister in 2015, stating that no veteran would have to fight for the support they deserve. However, he points out that the government is currently engaged in a legal battle with veterans over equal support and compensation. Blaschak also criticizes the government's reintegration program for ISIS members and the backdoor deal made with Omar Kadar. In response, the Prime Minister explains that they are unable to provide more than what is currently being offered to veterans.

Speaker 0: My name is Brock Blaschak. I'm a retired corporal with the for for Canadian Allied Infantry out here in Edmonton, first time. I served in the Canadian Armed Forces for 7 years. I deployed in Afghanistan back in 2009, until April 3rd where I was obviously severely wounded by, roadside bomb or improvised explosive. As you can see, I've lost my left leg. I have 58% soft tissue loss and 88% nerve damage on my right leg. Back in August 20, August 24, 2015, you made the promise and I'll quote it here. No veteran will be forced to fight their own government for the support and compensation they have earned. Yet, you are still currently in a legal battle With veterans regarding equal support and compensation to their peers, you have I saw our ISIS members coming into a reintegration program. You did a backdoor deal with Omar Kadar with not even stepping into the courtroom because honestly, mister prime minister, I was prepared To be injured in the line of duty when I went to when I joined the military. Nobody forced me to join the military. I was prepared To be killed in action. What I wasn't prepared for, mister prime minister, is Canada had turning its back on me. Speaker 1: On a couple of elements you brought up. First of all, why are we still fighting against certain veterans groups in court? Because They are asking for more than we are able to give right now. They are asking for more than we well, no. Hang on. You're asking for honest answers. Why are we still fighting against Certain veterans groups in court, because they are asking for more than we are able to give
