Speaker 0: New variant, the omicron variant, it is a variant of concern, but we shouldn't panic. It's just important to be aware of what this variant could potentially do to Americans, to those who are vaccinated and to those who are unvaccinated. What we know so far is that there are a lot of mutations in this omicron variant, and the combination of these, mutations might make it easier for the virus to gain access into our cells, into our body, and make us sick. But the question is, is it more virulent? Meaning, is it more harmful or is it simply going to be just more contagious? When we saw this outbreak in South Africa, we saw an increase in the number of COVID cases, but we did not see an increase in the number of deaths and hospitalizations. So that is reassuring. But right now what's important is that scientists are trying to determine if our current vaccines are still effective, which I think they will be, maybe to a lesser degree. And also our current treatment modalities, for example, our monoclonal antibodies, will they still work? So these are things that we need to determine and also to determine if someone has had previous infection and they have that natural immunity, those natural antibodies, are they at higher risk for reinfection? These are all the things that we are currently investigating. Speaker 1: What should we be seeing from the vaccine makers themselves when they're keeping an eye on this as well, keeping an eye on these mutations, working to combat it? Are we seeing success in those efforts being done by these major suppliers? Speaker 0: I believe so. Novavax, Pfizer, Moderna. Moderna, for example, has anticipated and was being proactive and and and knew that we were likely going to see more variants emerge. And they are already in the process of testing boosters specifically for Omicron and also Pfizer's Omicron. And, also, Pfizer is currently testing to see how effective our current vaccines are against this variant. I do believe they will still be effective, and I do believe the best way to protect ourselves are to get vaccinated, get your booster if you're eligible for a booster. This was just posted on the CDC website that showed those who had a third dose of booster shot had significantly more improvement, more protection, more antibodies than those who did not have that 3rd dose. So we definitely know, especially going into the winter holidays, having that extra protection can help minimize infection, can help minimize spread. Because it looks like based upon what I just read in that intro, we're getting closer to having this vaccine ready for those young kids. What are you telling patients in your practice? Speaker 1: Yes. That's really exciting. I think one of the greatest benefits of having this age group vaccinated is not missing school. If you get, for example, one child who tests positive, the entire class has to quarantine. So not missing school, not having to quarantine is a huge deal because remember, we wanna avoid that social isolation isolation that we're seeing children have to endure this past year. A lot of anxiety, a lot of depression. Also, you'll be have be able to enjoy the activities that you love doing more readily, sleepovers, parties, sports activities, without having to get tested, without having to quarantine if you've been exposed.

If you skipped your second shot, you can still go back and get it. Well, what I'm seeing is from my patients is there's a concern for side effects that might happen. Keep in mind, those side effects will only last maybe about a day and will protect you and keep you out of the hospital. We're also seeing an issue with just convenience and, you know, access availability if it's, you know, in your neighborhood, which it should be at this point. And then there's the concern of just people just not understanding that you will not get full protection, that 94, 95% protection if you don't get that second dose. So very important to get that second dose so that we can all reach herd immunity quickly, so we can get that July 1st target opening that the CDC recommends.

Speaker 0: Let's take a look at what we're dealing with right now, Alicia. We are dealing with the severe outbreak with Delta. It's spreading like wildfire, and it's putting our children in the hospital in record numbers. The coronavirus, this Delta strain is affecting the younger population. We see more hospitalizations with those under the age of 50 and our children. And we now are running out of ICU beds. If you look at Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Tennessee, we are running out of hospital beds. We are running out of ICU beds. The health care system is strained. So when we are dealing with these types of situations, we need to take action. And that starts with protecting everyone because everyone is capable of spreading this virus from one person to another. And remember what happens when the virus spreads. We it replicates and then it has the opportunity to mutate. And that's when we see these stronger variants like Delta that are harder to control.
