Speaker 0: As a war reporter and scholar of the global war on terror, I can say without a doubt that Julian Assange is the most innovative and consequential journalist of my generation. He has no business being in prison. One of the stories I've reported on, the burn pits, never would have been illuminated without the disclosures from WikiLeaks, the media organization launched by Assange. Assange sought to remove the narrative from journalism and privileged the truth. Through WikiLeaks' emphasis on primary documents, Assange challenged journalism to evolve into a more scientific, peer reviewable enterprise.
13 years before Congress passed the PACT Act for burn pits care, Assange and WikiLeaks in 2009 released a 2006 memo from the United States Air Force detailing burn pits health hazards. Like former US presidential candidate, Tulsi Gabbard. And like president Biden's own son Beau, I was exposed to the burn pits while reporting on the Iraq war in 2008. I'm grateful to Assange for his courageous work and therefore, this Christmas season, I asked president Biden to release this hero of our time from the Belmarsh prison in London. The name of Beau Biden and all of the occupiers unoccupied who've died from toxic exposure.
