The speaker expresses concern about new policies targeting trans and gender diverse youth, calling them divisive and harmful. They criticize Danielle Smith for spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories about the care available to these children. The speaker argues that the policies will interfere with the doctor-patient relationship and strip away the rights of parents and children to make decisions about treatment. They believe this will further isolate already struggling youth and worsen issues like depression and suicide. The speaker accuses Smith of using these policies as a distraction from other government failures. They conclude by expressing support and love for trans and 2 spirited individuals and a commitment to stand with them.

Speaker 0: Hey, folks. I'm just on my way down to Calgary. But, I wanted to take a moment to speak to these new policies that have been put forward by the UCP that are directly targeting trans and gender diverse youth. You know, what we saw yesterday with Danielle Neil Smith. In her video, it was just heartbreaking. It's I can't call it anything but a cynical exercise. An in incredibly divisive politics targeting some of the most vulnerable in our families and communities, that being trans and gender diverse kids. Put. Now, Danielle Smith tried to claim that she was speaking from a place of compassion, but, you know, she told outright lies about the kinds of care that are actually available and pointed to gender diversity. She repeated misinformation that is going to harm these children and their families, and that preys on the fear put of other parents. And she fed into a lot of misrepresentations and even conspiracy theories about the reality and the practices of the policies that actually take place put in our schools. These policies that she's put forward, they are going to directly interfere in the doctor patient relationship. It's going to strip away the rights of parents put in children to make their own decisions about treatment and medical care. This is gonna further isolate youth who we know are already struggling, put struggling to find supports, safe spaces that they need. These are youth who already experience put higher rates of depression, suicide, houselessness, and this is going to make it worse. Daniel Smith's intentionally trading in functionally trading in a politics division. She's looking to distract from her government disastrous record, her failure to address things like our overflowing emergency rooms, put overcrowded classrooms, soaring costs for families, and, hey, an ongoing shortage of family doctors. Put. This isn't compassion. This is cruelty. So I just wanna take a moment and say to all all of the young people across our province who are just simply seeking a safe space to be who you are. You know, to all of our trans and 2 spirited family and friends and neighbors, all the people that I have met across this province. Please know, we do see you. Put. We love you. We care about you, and we are committed to standing with you.

Danielle Smith's new gender and pronoun policy is causing controversy. The Alberta Medical Association released an open letter stating that the decision to seek gender affirming care should be between a person and their doctor. They also mentioned that puberty blocking agents are not irreversible and have benefits. The surgeries targeted by the program were not happening, as bottom surgery is not available in Canada for patients under 18. Concerns were raised about creating a private registry of physicians providing gender affirming care as it is seen as a surveillance measure. The government did not consult with a child and youth advocate, and other medical associations have also opposed the program. The Alberta government sent out a poll asking whether parental consent should be required for abortions for those under 18, which is seen as an attempt to strip rights from young people. This puts trans kids at risk for political gain.

Speaker 0: The story around Danielle Smith's new gender and pronoun policy continues to develop, as she gave an extensive press conference yesterday explaining the details. Although worth noting she showed up significantly late to her own press conference and then cut questions early. Because of course she did. So there's a couple of responses that I want to highlight here. First is this open letter from the Alberta Medical Association. The people actually providing the treatment and it makes it very clear The doctor patient relationship is inviolable and sacrosanct. Full stop. The decision to seek gender affirming care is between a person and their doctor. In Canada we have mature minors. A young person has the ability to determine their own medical care. Except specifically when it comes to gender issues. And the letter makes it clear, puberty blocking agents are not irreversible and in many cases has benefits. It also makes it very clear that these surgeries targeted by the program weren't happening. Bottom surgery is not available in Canada for patients under the age of 18 years. They also voiced the concerns about having to create a private registry of physicians who provide gender affirming care As it's a surveillance measure. Every medical association involved has come out against this program. And the government has also made it clear that they did not consult with a child and youth advocate. But I think it's important to acknowledge this isn't the end. This is the beginning. They're coming after more rights folks. The Alberta government sent out a poll Yesterday, asking whether or not people under the age of 18 should require parental consent to receive an abortion. Again, young people have a right to medical privacy and to make their own medical decisions. Bature minor is a thing. This is already an attempt to strip those rights. And before you come into my comments, ask yourself Why would somebody under the age of 18 need to do that in secret? In a lot of cases because they're in significant danger or because they're in an unsafe position. These situations are far more complicated than phone polls and hot takes. There are human rights involved here. Human safety. But the Alberta government doesn't care. They're just willing to put trans kids in harm's way. All to score cheap political points.
