Well, let's break it down. of all, one in three individuals in this country have high blood pressure, many of whom have no symptoms until it's too late to actually do anything about it. Three reasons why it's so significant. the inside lining of the blood vessels is exposed to very high pressures, be it the small arteries in the heart or arteries anywhere in the body, that then results in injury, which then results in blockages that increases the risk of heart attack and stroke, etc. Number two, the heart sees increased workload because it is pumping against a restriction. Like a muscle anywhere in the body, over time that heart muscle will continue to grow and thicken that results in something called left ventricular hypertrophy. Number three, and the end result of that muscle growth is again, just like muscles elsewhere in the body, at some point they will be exercised to failure. Consequently, the end result is in fact left ventricular or heart failure that results in shortness of breath, easy fatigability, and really a very poor quality of life overall. So what do we need to do about this? Well, number one, you need to get your blood pressure checked at your physician's visit at least once a year. Even better would be to check your blood pressure at home so that you're monitoring it at different times of the day over the course of longer stretches so that you can feel confident that you do in fact have the diagnosis of high blood pressure. What does that mean? A constant or reproducible blood pressure of 140 over 90 over a period of time. Certainly a red flag and you should see your physician if that's the case. Speaker 0: The single most common cause of high blood pressure is a deficiency in the mineral magnesium. Really? Yeah. You have two types of blood vessels in the human body. You have arteries and you have veins. Arteries carry blood away from the heart, veins carry blood back to the heart. Well, what's the difference? Well, there's one significant difference between the two. Arteries have muscles, veins do not. Why does an artery have muscle? Because God is smart. When the heart pumps blood, it goes into the artery and muscle in the artery constricts and relaxes. Constriction relaxes constriction relaxes in order to help the heart pump the blood. That's fantastic. Well, how does the muscle constrict and relax? The same way that a bicep constricts and relaxes or any muscle in the body. It's done through magnesium and calcium. If you do not have enough magnesium, the muscle will constrict, but it cannot relax. So it stays constricted. Now if you have a garden hose and there's water coming out of it and you squeeze the hose just a little bit, the water comes out faster. Right? Mhmm. It's because you decrease the volume, the pressure goes up. So when the artery gets collapsed because of not enough magnesium, the blood pressure spikes. So you don't have high blood pressure because you have a circulatory system. You don't have high blood pressure because you have a bad gene. The more fatigue you have and the less energy you have for lifting weights, the less your body is able to build muscle. So if you wanna do cardio, do cardio after your lifts. Number two, I did exercises way too fast. Instead, go fast on the concentric and go slow on the eccentric of every exercise. If you aren't doing this, you're just leaving extra muscle growth on the table. Number three, I used to work out for way too long. Spend a maximum of sixty to ninety minutes in the gym. And if you feel like you're spending way more than this, you might just be having too many exercises and sets that just ultimately become junk volume, aka wasting your time at the gym and actually not getting anything from that. Speaker 0: Salt has gotten kind of a bad rap, but there was an article published in Science Magazine about the whole myth around salt. I mean, it's true that people with chronic hypertension need to avoid salt, but for most people who are consuming enough fluid, salt is great. A lot of times people will feel jittery during the day. They'll think they'll have low blood sugar. Take little bit of take a pinch of salt, put in some water, maybe a little lemon juice to kill the taste and drink that. You notice you're just rock solid. Why? You might have been low blood pressure or low sodium. Sometimes people can't focus and they are low sodium. Sometimes we crave sugar and we're actually low sodium.
