Speaker 0: It's been ninety days of protest at the ICE facility in Portland where tensions are high, neighborhoods resemble war zones, and the line between order and chaos is razor thin. I'm Katie Davis Court reporting for the Post Millennial, and tonight, I'm going behind the scenes with Homeland Security's Federal Protective Service, the officers who stand as our nation's first line of defense in protecting our federal buildings. Speaker 1: We've had multiple assaults on federal officers ever since early June. Speaker 2: Well, our officers do a great job. Some of them work twenty four seven, especially on these protest activities. Speaker 1: Portland is unbelievable what's going on. These are paid terrorists. Okay? President Trump's border czar is promising increased immigration raids in sanctuary cities, and today, he specifically called out Portland. Seattle. All these sanctuary cities that refuse to work with ICE, where we know public safety threats are being released every day into this country. We're gonna address that. Speaker 0: From lockdown perimeters and guillotines to arson attacks and assaults, I'm diving into the unfiltered reality of keeping the peace in one of America's most volatile hotspots. Speaker 1: Tonight, we just have we have about 30 to 40 protesters outside. It's a pretty normal night. We're also federal protection service. Our mission here is to exactly that is to protect the federal facility, protect the employees, protect visitors. We're doing Speaker 0: And tell us a little bit about the protests. Speaker 1: So the protest, I mean, they're obviously anti the anti immigration enforcement's going on. And they started early June and slowly, you know, slowly started to build, and we had a pretty heavy protest month in June, and then it's kinda stabilized out with, you know, ebbs and flows. Sometimes we'll have busier nights than others. Number one, a lot of first amendment protective activity. And then occasionally, we'll have where it'll not be peaceful, and we'll start out in the legal activity that we have to, you know, force them up. Speaker 0: What are you looking for that isn't peaceful for you guys to go out and start dispersing the crowd? Speaker 1: Well, if we have anything, they would impede operations of the building. So our vehicle our vehicle ramp and gates, you know, if we can't get vehicles in and out. Speaker 0: So why are we speeding out so fast? Speaker 1: To prevent anyone from tailing us or any of the protesters in the area to get close and possibly do some damage. And then, you know, assaults, things like that, you know, when what protest do get a little bit violent. Speaker 0: You guys aren't just dispersing a peaceful crowd? Speaker 1: No. We no. We certainly would not disperse a peaceful crowd. Speaker 2: And we embrace the First Amendment rights, absolutely. But when it becomes violent and it Speaker 0: for four months now, you said. How's officers' morale? Speaker 1: Overall, morale's good. You know, obviously, it does it does wear on morale to, you know, pretty much take constant verbal abuse and rapement. Right? That's part of their first memorandum. You don't have to like what they say, but, you know, that can wear on that can wear on the officers, you know, you know, being called obscene names, racist names. Oh, racism is a big one. And as you know, oftentimes, we'll pick out, you know, minority officers, and they'll get extra attention for verbal abuse. Speaker 3: You get that. I'm not kidding. You get that. Really? Hey, Brett. I'm trying to act out for the White House, though. Speaker 1: And so that does wear on people, but it's I mean, unfortunately, it's part of the job. We don't react to it and just, you know, move on and conduct our mission. Speaker 2: Well, our officers do a great job. Some of them work twenty four seven, especially on these, on these protest activities and on these operations. So I think it's important to hype them up and say, great work. Great job, FPS. Thank you for protecting our facilities and our public and our protesters all equally are protected. So they're doing a great job, and we appreciate you giving us the opportunity to thank them. What are the hours like here? They are twelve hour shifts, and but we're twenty four seven. Yeah. We're here twenty four seven. They just keep going. Yes. I wouldn't say they're retired. They're motivated, but they keep going. This is their job. They like doing it. Speaker 1: I mean, all our men and women, they're outstanding, and they do their job. And and DI's personnel as well. I mean, they're here with us. Speaker 2: Dedicated. And Speaker 1: dedicated professionals. And, again, we, you know, we also support, you know, the protesters exercise their first member rights. I mean, it goes both ways. But we just we keep driving on. It's our mission, and we'll keep doing it as long as we Speaker 3: have to. Speaker 0: So tell us a little about the guillotine. Speaker 1: Well, the guillotine was abandoned property from Monday night. It was rolled out as part of the protest, and then after the crowd left, it was left in the middle of the street. So we removed it and and brought it in until the rightful owner comes to claim it. Speaker 3: Door, Pat. You close the door. So Speaker 0: how long have you been working here? Speaker 2: So I've been with FPS for over four years, but with the federal government for over twenty. Speaker 0: And what made you become attracted to this job? Speaker 2: The mission. Believe in the mission. I believe in everything that FPS does. I definitely believe in, being a public servant, so absolutely. I'm here to serve the public. Speaker 0: And would you recommend this job? I absolutely would. Speaker 2: It is very rewarding. And for anyone that wants to be in public service and give back, FPS is the place to be. Speaker 0: And what kind of talent are you trying Speaker 2: to attract? Somebody that's really interested in protecting the rights of people, protecting law and order, and that are really passionate about law enforcement. We are going up to the roof so that you can see the vantage point that a lot of our officers have for the protesters. Speaker 0: And the roof, what do they do on the roof? Speaker 1: Overwatch. Okay. Speaker 0: What kind of crimes have you witnessed? Speaker 1: Oh, we've had multiple assaults on federal officers ever since early June. We've had a lot of damage on the building, not so much damage done recently, but at the early days in June, we had quite quite a bit of damage, and that's why we put up all the plywood all over the windows, doors. We did have in early June, we did have the attempted breach on the building where they actually tried to break in and smashed doors open. Generally, it's a lot of, you know, just failure to obey. You know, we'll they'll come on to federal property, and we'll ask multiple times to use our LRAD or verbal warnings asking people to park federal property. And then after numerous warnings, if they don't, that's when we'll address it, and that's when, you know, we'll take a force connection. Speaker 0: And are these protesters out here every night? Speaker 1: We've had since June, every single night, we've had protesters. Speaker 3: Quit your job. Quit your job. Quit your job. Speaker 0: And how can people get involved with FBS? We would love Speaker 2: for people to join our agency. So you just go to our website, and you can definitely look how to become an FBS officer. Speaker 0: And that's a wrap on our time with the Federal Protective Service. Tonight, we witnessed dedicated officers standing firm in the face of chaos, risking their lives to protect this federal property, and putting it all on the line while navigating an unpredictable and volatile situation. As the protests show no signs of stopping with demonstrators vowing to continue their stand, this story is far from over. So right now, we are grateful for the bravery we've seen and mindful of the challenges still ahead.

DHS police arrested an individual at an apartment near the Portland ICE facility, reportedly used by Antifa as a crash pad. The tenant, identified as Chandler, had allowed militants to stay in his unit, providing them with a place to sleep and conduct activities related to their protests. Witnesses described a chaotic scene, with federal officers pursuing the suspect and shouting threats. The reasons for the arrest remain unclear, but it appears to be a significant incident related to ongoing protests against ICE.

It’s unclear why this militant was taken into custody. I had just arrived to scope out the scene and saw federal police officers sprinting through the streets. Protesters referred to the detainee as “Kiki.”

I’m working to find out more information, but it’s likely a significant incident occurred. @Numerarch captured video of officers chasing the subject, with someone (an officer?) overheard yelling, “You do that again, I’ll f—king shoot you.” https://t.co/kgCmFdE7w7

Earlier in the week, it was revealed that a tenant, identified as Chandler, had opened his apartment unit to individuals involved with the Antifa occupation outside the ICE facility. His unit is where many of them sleep, use the restroom, and do laundry. Chandler, who has also been a daily protester, said he welcomed the militants into his residence so they could continue the occupation and protest against the “gestapo.”

The speaker states they are being doxxed because they posted their address online while allowing strangers to use their apartment as a bathroom for protesting against the "Gestapo." They anticipated this due to people targeting those associated with the protests. The speaker recounts a story of a 12-year-old girl whose parents, legal green card holders, were allegedly "abducted" by authorities. The speaker draws a parallel to 1933 Nazi Germany, claiming that the Nazis initially targeted criminals and those who did nothing to stop them. They believe people who are annoyed by the protests are like Nazi citizens. The speaker claims they are trying to make the protests "cohesive" and "not annoying," and that the news portrays them as violent criminals, but they haven't broken anything, only done graffiti. They mention anarchists are involved, and there is a policy among anarchists called don't police other people's actions.

Speaker 0: I am being doxxed. Right? Somebody went into my apartment. Speaker 1: Inside your apartment? Speaker 0: I filmed the inside of my apartment and then posted on posted my address and my name and my mailing address on social media. And I knew that this would happen eventually because I'm letting a bunch of strangers use my apartment just so so that they can have a bathroom to use so so that they can they can continue protesting against the Gestapo. Because I care. I care about people being able to have the basic things that they need to to be healthy and sanitary. Right? But, you know, people are spiteful and petty, so they will they will obviously target whoever they can in order to get back at people they don't like. So I anticipated it. I don't care about me. I didn't keep that person out. Appreciate it. Yeah. So that was that was the worst. So yeah. We don't want to I've been trying to tell them the entire time to, like, stop with the friendly fire. Right? Because, like, a lot of these people, they're very angry and very convoluted. Right? And, like, obviously, it's understandable to be angry at the fucking Gestapo or disappearing our friends. Like, fucking before before the beginning of summer break when the kids going to school, right, this 12 year old little girl, she came out of the school, and she was thanking us for being out there because she said that her friend, who was nine years old, when she went home, her parents weren't there because they had been abducted by us. Oh. They just got disappeared, and she doesn't know where they went because she'll probably never see them. Speaker 1: It's terrible. Speaker 0: They didn't do anything wrong. Right? They fucking they were legal they were here legally with green cards. That's what her father was telling me. The 12 year old girl's father was telling me. They were here legally. He knew them. They were friends of his family. They were they were landscapers, and they had paid they paid a lot of money to send their child to the best food that they could afford. Right? Mhmm. And they got fucking dis they got black backed. It's fucked up. So that's why we're out here because we don't like that shit. Right? Yeah. I don't know if you guys know what happened at the begin in 1933 starting in 1933 in Nazi Germany. Right? But when the Nazis started putting people in concentration camps, they didn't start with innocent people. They started with actual real criminals. Right? They just took away their rights. They they got rid of the ability to, like, have those people let those people defend us. The people who just let them. They took How actual criminals? Nazis. We called them Nazis. Right? The people who just lived their lives and went about things as normal as people were being fucking black bagged and sent to concentration camps. We call them Nazis. All they did was live their lives like normal. All they did was get annoyed when they heard these fucking riot out in the street standing up against the gestapo. They thought, why are you doing that? You can't do anything. They're just gonna shoot you. Right? That's all that they thought. That is what the Nazi citizens of Germany thought, and that is why the Nazis won, and that is why we are out. Because we don't want that shit to happen again. Yeah. So I'm sorry that we're trying trying everything I can to make them as cohesive and, like, as not not annoying as possible. I tried to keep them out of the driveway so that they don't get gasped. The price wants to gasp. They think it's fun. Right? They don't they don't need a reason. Right? They'll they'll make up reasons that are above them. They can do whatever the fuck they want. Right? So I we we like, we haven't even broken anything. Right? The news keeps portraying us as these these crazy violent criminals that are burning shit down, but we haven't broken anything. Right? We haven't done anything other than graffiti them and, like Speaker 1: Did they try and burn up the gate, though? I thought they tried Speaker 2: to burn up the gate. Speaker 0: It's Burn up the gate? Speaker 1: Well, it has burn marks on the top and the bottom. Maybe that wasn't you guys. Speaker 0: That's the problem. Most of these people are anarchists, and I've got mixed feelings about anarchists. But most the vast majority of them are, like, well intentioned people. They just there's this policy among anarchists called don't police other people's actions.

I now believe that “Jack” one of the men who jumped me last night in Seattle for recording the riots, was punching me with SAP gloves. Usually filled with steel shot and allow him to pack a much larger punch than he otherwise could. This explains the dents in my helmet. https://t.co/zFdrLf42vj

I want to send a clear message to ICE: I am ready to assist you. We will prioritize helping you target criminal illegal immigrants, including drug dealers and human traffickers, as well as those who cross our borders without proper controls. We now have millions of undocumented individuals in our country, many of whom break the law. Our main focus is on criminal illegals, and we will provide ICE with any support we can, regardless of whether we are a blue or sanctuary state. Our new governor has a duty to ensure the safety of our state, and if they fail, they will be held responsible. As an elected sheriff, I answer to the people, not the governor or county commissioners. My priority is your safety and the safety of our county within the state.

We will not protect criminals, illegal criminals that are in our country, the drug dealers, the human trafficking, and just the mere fact of sneaking across that border while they didn't sneak, some of them have, but most of them, they just waited across and come into our country, no controls whatsoever. And now we've got millions of illegals in our country and they commit a law, breaking the law as well. But the main ones they wanna come after first is the criminal illegals, and we will help them any way we can. I don't care if this is a blue state, a sanctuary state. They have a they have an obligation. Our governor, our new governor is gonna take office, has an obligation to safety of our state. And if they refuse, that's on them. But this sheriff is not gonna refuse to help ice. We will be there to help us to do the job. And, and I hope a lot of other sheriffs across this state will do the same thing. And believe me, that's why you want an elected sheriff because you are the elected sheriff's boss, not the governor, not the board of county commissioners. You are our boss, period. Canales was released from custody by King County juvenile court judge Veronica Galvan on Dec. 2, only two weeks prior to the most recent attack. He was being held in juvenile detention on felony charges for a robbery in Seattle that occurred on Nov. 15. KC Prosecutors asked for him to remain in custody awaiting trial, but Judge Galvan denied the state's request and released Canales to home monitoring. The defendant allegedly went on to immediately reoffend. He has several other criminal charges and convictions dating back to 2022. Canales now faces new charges that include first-degree assault, first-degree kidnapping, and robbery.
