I addressed Sen. Sanders' criticisms about my Social Security record, clarifying that I won't cut benefits. When asked about my late son Beau, I got emotional, expressing that he should be the one running for president, as he always walks with me in spirit.

Good morning, everyone. I want to address Bernie Sanders' recent criticism regarding Social Security. He tweeted that one of us has fought to cut Social Security, referencing a 1995 statement of mine about freezing federal spending, including Social Security. However, that context is often overlooked. I was focused on preventing a government shutdown, not cutting benefits. It's surprising to revisit statements from decades ago, especially when they are taken out of context. Throughout my career, I've consistently supported Social Security. I worked with other Democrats to ensure its solvency during the Reagan years. Our obligation is to protect the youngest and oldest among us, and I have never wavered in that commitment.

Speaker 0: Hey, guys. Good to see you this morning. Appreciate you being here. I wanna pull you back into the campaign just a little bit and talk about Bernie Sanders' criticism of you on that question of Social Security because you pointed out he did apologize to you for the op ed written by a surrogate calling you corrupt. Though I also put out that clip that misrepresented your position when talking about Paul Ryan. Clearly, you were mocking Paul Ryan and being facetious. But just last night, I wanna put up a tweet from Bernie Sanders. He wrote this, to you, let's be honest, Joe. One of us fought for decades to cut Social Security. One of us didn't. But don't take it from me, take it from you. They include there a video clip, a statement you made on the Senate floor in 1995 where you were talking about freezing federal spending, including Social Security. So it's not just surrogates, and he can complain, but it's coming from the principal himself. They think they have an issue with you on Social Security. So once and for all, will you cut Social Security benefits if you become president? Speaker 1: No. No. No. No. And we weren't talking about cutting them either then. That was trying to figure out how we got through a debacle where the whole government didn't shut down. And so look, it's it's, I find it amazing that we go back and look at statements, many of them, most of them take them out of context of 10, 20, 30, 35 years ago. It's like my going back and pointing out how how Bernie voted against the Brady bill 5 times while I was trying to get it passed when he was in the house or how he voted to, you know, protect gun manufacturers. It's the only group in America you can't sue. I mean, he he's made up for that. He he's indicated that was passed. But I you know, if you wanna talk about things that are really different, you know, my support for social security has been solid my entire career. I did join with a lot of other democrats, to, make sure we fix social security, quote unquote, made it solvent during the Reagan years. But, look, it's all about making sure we have, you know, we have we have one real obligation as to the very as Hubert Humphrey said, the very the youngest among us and the oldest among us. That's real. And I've never walked away from that.

Asked on @Morning_Joe about his late son, Beau, Joe Biden appears to fight back tears: "Beau should be the one running for president, not me." "He walks with me. I know that sounds to some people kind of silly." https://t.co/oMLz16eO4J

You mentioned fallen angels, which reminds me of a moment with Nancy Pelosi after Elijah Cummings' passing. She shared a clip about her father, and I told her he would be proud of her. Nancy responded that he and her mother are with her every day. This makes me think of Beau and how he guides me on the campaign trail. Every morning, I ask myself if he is proud of me. He wanted me to stay engaged, and he is always with me, along with my surviving children, Hunter and Ashley. Many people approach me, sharing their own losses, seeking reassurance that they can move forward. The key is finding purpose and recognizing that our loved ones remain a part of us.

Speaker 0: You talked about fallen angels. It it reminds me, I was we were, when Elijah Cummings died, Mica and I were alone with Nancy Pelosi in the speaker's office. She showed us an old clip of, her father, someone talking about her father. And I said, I bet your father would be proud of of of where you are right now. I bet you wish that he could see you right now. And Nancy said, well, he does. And my mom does too. I'm a person of faith. They are with me every day, and it reminds me of your fallen angel, Beau. How how how much is he with you every day on the campaign trail? How much guidance and how much inspiration do you get from Beau? And and not only his memory, but also, I know you're a person of deep faith, having Beau walk with you every day? Speaker 1: Joe, Beau should be the one runner for president, not me. Every morning I get up, Joe, not a joke, I think to myself, is he proud of me? Because he's the one who wanted me to stay engaged, made me promise, promise me dad, promise me dad, you'll stay engaged. Didn't mean I had to run for president, but I would not walk. He was worried I'd walk away from what I've worked on my whole life since I've been 24 years old. And, he is part of me, Joe. And, so is my surviving son, Hunter and Ashley. They are they are, I he he he walks with me. I know that sounds to some people kind of silly, but he really honest to God does. I know he's in me. I know he's part of me. And Joe, you'd be amazed at the number of people come up to me in a rope line. I mean, hundreds of people over time. And they'll throw their arms around me, men and women and saying, I just lost my son. I just lost my daughter. I lost my wife. What and all they wanna know is that it is that you can make it. And the way you make it, is you find purpose and you bring that you realize they're inside you. They're part of you. It's impossible to separate it.
