🧵NEW STRONG Evidence that changes of atmospheric mass and surface pressure have been the driver of Earth's paleoclimate, not CO2 and not Sun's luminosity. This graph compares changes in the Latitudinal Temperature Gradient (LTG) over the Cenozoic Era (past 66 My) derived from oxygen 18 (δ18O) in planktonic foraminifera sediments with the LTG evolution predicted by the extended Nikolov-Zeller (NZ) Planetary Temperature Model assuming pressure as a driver of Earth's paleoclimate. The close agreement between the proxy-based record and model simulations indicates that the observed increase of LTG over the past 66 My was indeed caused by depressurization of the Earth surface due to loss of atmospheric mass. The proxy-based LTG record is from Gaskell et al. (2022: https://www.pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.2111332119). LTG Modeling Method: 1. A proxy-based record of Earth's global surface air temperature covering the past 105 My was assembled from published studies. 2. The Universal NZ Model predicting a planet's global surface temperature from solar irradiance and total atmospheric pressure was inverted and solved for pressure using the Earth's proxy-based paleo-temperature record as input. The attached slide shows reconstructed pressure changes obtained through this model inversion. This constitutes an explicit assumption that paleoclimate was driven by pressure changes...

3. The above records of global temperature and mean surface pressure were then used with the extended NZ Model to predict temperature variations at several key latitudes. This is basically an independent reconstruction of latitudinal temperatures from an observed global temperature record assuming that changes in total air pressure were driving the global temperature. The attached graph shows the result of these latitudinal temperature reconstructions.

4. An LTG time series was calculated as a difference between modeled temperature records at 20 and 60 degree latitude shown on the above graph. 5. The modeled LTG record was compared to the proxy-based LTG record published by Gaskell et al. (2020). The proxy-based record used oxygen 18 data from drilling sites below 30 degree latitude and above 60 degree latitude to calculate LTG. This means that the proxy-based LTG was not estimated using temperatures from fixed latitudes as was the modeled LTG time series. Also, the modeled LTG used surface air temperatures, while the proxy-based LTG utilized sea-surface temperatures (SST). This might explain the small discrepancy between modeled and proxy-based LTG records during the early Cenozoic. However, the overall match between modeled and proxy-based LTG records strongly suggests that the observed huge Cenozoic cooling was caused by loss of atmospheric mass and the related decrease of surface air pressure... Earth's surface has cooled over the past 66 My because of depressurization !

Deep learning-based reconstruction of monthly Antarctic surface air temperatures from 1979 to 2023 - Scientific Data Gridded surface air temperature (SAT) data for Antarctica is a crucial foundation for studying climate change in the region. However, significant discrepancies exist between the available Antarctic gridded temperature datasets, particularly regarding the spatial distribution characteristics of long-term temperature trends. In this paper, we develop a new, regularly updated, spatio-temporally complete Antarctic monthly SAT dataset from 1979 onwards, with a spatial resolution of 1° x 1° in latitude and longitude, from multiple sources of in situ observations using deep learning method. Deep learning model was trained with daily SATs from three global reanalysis datasets. The reconstructed Antarctic SATs were successfully validated using data from staffed and automated meteorological stations, demonstrating a closer match with observations, particularly in capturing the patterns of temperature trends. This dataset represents a new advance in the development of Antarctic observational climate dataset and is an important resource that underpins research across diverse scientific disciplines, facilitating a deeper understanding of the Antarctic climate system and its global implications. nature.com

Roles of Earth’s Albedo Variations and Top-of-the-Atmosphere Energy Imbalance in Recent Warming: New Insights from Satellite and Surface Observations Past studies have reported a decreasing planetary albedo and an increasing absorption of solar radiation by Earth since the early 1980s, and especially since 2000. This should have contributed to the observed surface warming. However, the magnitude of such solar contribution is presently unknown, and the question of whether or not an enhanced uptake of shortwave energy by the planet represents positive feedback to an initial warming induced by rising greenhouse-gas concentrations has not conclusively been answered. The IPCC 6th Assessment Report also did not properly assess this issue. Here, we quantify the effect of the observed albedo decrease on Earth’s Global Surface Air Temperature (GSAT) since 2000 using measurements by the Clouds and the Earth’s Radiant Energy System (CERES) project and a novel climate-sensitivity model derived from independent NASA planetary data by employing objective rules of calculus. Our analysis revealed that the observed decrease of planetary albedo along with reported variations of the Total Solar Irradiance (TSI) explain 100% of the global warming trend and 83% of the GSAT interannual variability as documented by six satellite- and ground-based monitoring systems over the past 24 years. Changes in Earth’s cloud albedo emerged as the dominant driver of GSAT, while TSI only played a marginal role. The new climate sensitivity model also helped us analyze the physical nature of the Earth’s Energy Imbalance (EEI) calculated as a difference between absorbed shortwave and outgoing longwave radiation at the top of the atmosphere. Observations and model calculations revealed that EEI results from a quasi-adiabatic attenuation of surface energy fluxes traveling through a field of decreasing air pressure with altitude. In other words, the adiabatic dissipation of thermal kinetic energy in ascending air parcels gives rise to an apparent EEI, which does not represent “heat trapping” by increasing atmospheric greenhouse gases as currently assumed.
