Republicans have the power to keep the government open. They have majorities in the House, Senate, and the White House. If the government shuts down, it will be on them. Democrats have the power to stand up for the American people — and that’s exactly what we’re doing. https://t.co/bLg0AcedMB

Democrats lack the power to shut down the government; the party controlling the House, Senate, and White House governs. Democrats can stop bad bills that strip programs from Americans, including veterans, air safety, and food safety. They also aim to prevent a slush fund for Elon Musk and Donald Trump, which could lead to cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security by decimating programs and services. The House, under Hakim Jeffries, voted almost unanimously against the legislation. The Senate Democrats have leverage to reject handing over tools and a slush fund to Elon Musk and Donald Trump.

Speaker 0: Democrats don't have the power to shut down the government. The the party that controls the house, the senate, and the White House is responsible for governing. What we do have is the power to stop a bad bill that will strip programs away from Americans that they care about, from veterans, you know, safety to air safety to food safety, but also to not give a slush fund to Elon Musk and Donald Trump to do the things that they are doing, including, by way, stripping Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security by cutting those agencies and decimating programs and services that Americans rely on. So we have the power to stand up for people. That is what the house did under the leadership of Hakim Jeffries. We gave an almost unanimous vote against this legislation. That is what the senate needs to do. That's the place that democrats have leverage to say, no. We're not gonna hand the tools over with a slush fund to Elon Musk and Donald Trump to do what they're doing.

It’s clear who’s in charge, and it’s not President-elect Donald Trump. Shadow President Elon Musk spent all day railing against Republicans’ CR, succeeded in killing the bill, and then Trump decided to follow his lead. https://t.co/feDiAXe8yp

Republicans are resorting to pointless political stunts to distract you from the fact that they are denying election results, trying to take away your health care, and voting to cut Social Security and Medicare. This extreme MAGA majority has NOTHING to show the American people. https://t.co/k8vfdMrnjN

Congressman Bowman is a progressive leader who has dedicated his life to equity and opportunity for kids. He made a mistake, apologized, and paid the fine. Republicans are wasting time demonizing him instead of focusing on important issues like healthcare, Social Security, Medicare, and voting rights. They want to distract from their own actions. The majority has achieved nothing but chaos and cruelty. Recently, Congressman Chip Roy called out his Republican colleagues for not accomplishing anything significant. The answer is clear: nothing.

Speaker 0: Congressman Bowman is a brilliant, committed, progressive member who has dedicated his life to equity and opportunity for kids. He is a leader in economics, education and racial justice. He is a leader of the Green New Deal for public schools and legislation to pay artists what they're worth. He made a mistake. He apologized. He paid the fine. The ethics committee declined to further this matter. That should be the end of this. But what are we doing here? Republicans would rather waste time with political stunts and demonizing a black member. They want you to forget that they wanna strip your health care from Americans. They want you to forget that they wanna cut Social Security and Medicare, the 2 most important and trusted programs in the country. They want you to forget that they are denying election results on that side your right to vote. Anything to distract From what they are really doing, that's what they're doing right now. There is nothing to show for the majority but Chaos is Friday and cruelty. And I just have to end with this. Just a few weeks ago, General lady's time is expired. General lady, 32nd. Just a few weeks ago, congressman Chip Royce stood on the floor of this chamber and called for his fellow Republican colleagues to, quote, Come explain to me one meaningful, significant thing the Republican majority has done. The answer is obvious. Nothing
