WATCH: Australians hand over 51,000 illegal firearms in gun amnesty reut.rs/2fW09GP via @Reuters TV https://t.co/dFlHVh6t3u

Video Transcript AI Summary
Australia's first gun amnesty in 20 years has resulted in the surrender of 51,000 illegal firearms, allowing individuals to hand over weapons without punishment. This initiative reflects the country's stringent gun control measures, which Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull believes significantly reduce the likelihood of mass shootings, such as the Las Vegas incident. The amnesty, launched in June and lasting three months, has led to the surrender of one-fifth of illegal guns, all of which will be destroyed. Australia's strict firearm regulations were established following the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre, where 35 people were killed, and since then, there have been no mass shootings in the country.

Speaker 0: Off the streets and in safe hands. That's the line from Australian authorities on Friday after 51,000 illegal firearms were handed over, part of the country's first gun amnesty in 20 years, which allows people to surrender firearms without punishment. It's an example of Australia's extremely tight stance on gun control, which prime minister Malcolm Turnbull says severely limits the chances of a Las Vegas style shooting. The killer there had a collection of semi automatic weapons, which a person in his position would simply not be able to acquire in Australia. Despite its already tough rules on gun control, Australia kicked off a 3 month gun amnesty in June. Officials say it's led to a 5th of illegal guns being surrendered, all of which will now be destroyed. The country's tough stance on firearms came after the 1996 Port Arthur Massacre, where 35 people were killed by a lone gunman in the island state of Tasmania. There have been no mass shootings in Australia since.

He emphasized the need for government grants for battery production and vowed to reverse the previous administration's rollback of vehicle emission standards. Biden highlighted the urgency of the U.S. keeping pace with China in electric vehicle sales and stressed the importance of building vehicles and batteries domestically. His plan includes $100 billion in consumer rebates and $10 billion in tax credits for zero-emission vehicles, alongside a goal of 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. Biden aims to reassure auto workers concerned about job losses due to the shift to electric vehicles, but he faces opposition from congressional Republicans who plan to propose a counter plan.

Speaker 0: Okay. Here we go. You ready? Yes, sir. Ready? Speaker 1: US president Joe Biden took his electric vehicle plan to the test track in Michigan on Tuesday, where he hit the accelerator of Ford's new electric f 150 lightning truck during a visit where he touted a plan to invest in American electric automakers. The electric Ford truck still camouflaged ahead of its official reveal on Wednesday. Speaker 0: This sucker's quick. How does how does it drive? How does it feel? I wanna see it. I wanna see it. Speaker 1: Biden was at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center in Dearborn to make the case for his $174,000,000,000 electric vehicle plan, calling for government grants for new battery production facilities. Speaker 0: We're gonna set a new pace for electric vehicles. Speaker 1: Biden vowed to reverse what he called the Trump administration's shortsighted rollback of vehicle emission standards while pushing for passage of his ambitious $2,300,000,000,000 jobs and infrastructure bill. Speaker 0: They announced infrastructure week, and they announced it and announced it and announced it and announced it every week for 4 years and then do a damn thing. Speaker 1: Biden argued the United States is falling behind China, which is selling more electric vehicles. Speaker 0: The real question is whether we'll lead or we'll fall behind in the race of the future, or whether we'll build these vehicles and the batteries that go in them here in the United States rely on other countries. Speaker 1: The centerpiece of Biden's EV plan is $100,000,000,000 in consumer rebates. Biden backs a further $10,000,000,000 in new tax credits for 0 emission, medium, and heavy duty work vehicles. The White House also wants to encourage new battery production facilities, which are key to ramping up US vehicle manufacturing and build 500,000 EV charging stations by 2030. Biden is pushing for electric vehicles in the auto industry's heartland, trying to win over auto workers worried that more electric cars and trucks will mean fewer jobs. But Biden faces resistance from congressional Republicans who are set to release a counter proposal to Biden's infrastructure plan this week.
