“This was supposed to be the water to put out the Palisades fire.” The FP’s Austyn Jeffs visits the Santa Ynez Reservoir that has reportedly been empty since February 2024. https://t.co/DwO5OrYhWk

Video Transcript AI Summary
This was meant to be the water source for fighting the Palisades fire, but the San Jenez reservoir has been empty since February of last year. Firefighters were unaware of this water supply issue when they began battling the fire at 3 AM on Wednesday and quickly ran out of water. The reservoir, which holds 117 million gallons, was closed for maintenance, yet no construction materials or vehicles were present. Firefighters relied on three backup tanks, each holding only 1 million gallons. With the Santa Ana winds approaching and a dry wet season, questions arise about why there was no effort to refill the reservoir. We need clear answers regarding this situation.

Speaker 0: This was supposed to be the water that put out the Palisades fire. This is the San Jenez reservoir. It's the water supply basically for the Palisades. When they first started fighting the Palisades fire, they ran out of water extremely quickly. Wednesday 3 AM, they were basically out. And there's been a lot of talk on why this happened. So how long has this reservoir been empty for? Since February of last year, there was no communication from the Department of Water and Power to LAFD that there was a water supply issue. The firefighters, when they were started fighting the fires, no one informed them that the reservoir was empty. This reservoir holds a 117,000,000 gallons of water. The fire department was using a water supply from 3 backup tanks, each one only holding 1,000,000 gallons of water. They say it's closed for maintenance to repair the lid that's on top of it. I don't know a lot about reservoir maintenance, but there's literally literally no construction materials or or vehicles anywhere in sight. Also, with a reservoir like this, you can refill it or start to refill it. So another question is, if they saw the Santa Ana winds were coming and we have this remarkably dry wet season, why was there no attempt to start refilling it back up? I know I threw a lot out there, but I think we need some answers, guys. Some real answers here.

Watch Daniel Penny’s first interrogation: “I’m not trying to kill the guy.” The FP’s @Olivia_Reingold has been closely following Daniel Penny’s trial and has obtained footage of his police interrogation. In the video, Penny initially believes he’s there to report on the “lunatic” who was “threatening people” on the train. But as the questioning unfolds, it becomes clear that the officers don’t see him as a Good Samaritan—they see him as a criminal suspect. https://thefp.pub/4geZfOj

I'm doing well, thanks. I was in the Marines, 3rd Battalion, 6th Marines, from '96 to 2000. Today, I was on the train after class in Brooklyn when a man entered, acting erratically and threatening everyone. I asked someone to hold my phone and tried to restrain him as he rolled around. He seemed intoxicated or high. I didn't want to hurt him, just de-escalate the situation. I held him until two other guys helped me. We kept him down until the police arrived. He was still moving but not saying much when they got there. People on the train thanked me for intervening. I felt it was necessary to protect others from his threats.

I take that off straight from school to the gym. Was on there. I forgot what stopped. It was at, but some guy came in. He's, like, whipped his jacket off, and he's, like, I'm gonna kill everybody. I'm gonna I'm gonna I can go to prison forever. I I don't care. I don't do this. At that point, I I looked to the person next to me, like, hey. Just hang on to this phone for me. I had my headphones in and took it off and just kinda, like, grabbed them behind because he came in just to, like because he was acting like a lunatic, like a crazy person. So and he was rolling around the floor. And at that point, the train stopped. It was like, someone called the cops. And he's still, like, rolling around, still going crazy. Had 2 other guys kinda help me just kinda keep him from from going nuts. And yeah. That's why you guys came. Speaker 0: Okay. Did he seem like he was on something? Speaker 1: Because he was intoxicated and high. Something Something like that. I mean, those that k two that they're smoking pushing people in front, like, these people are going crazy. So it was So he seemed he seemed all physically facing. A little bit. Yeah. Speaker 0: Now explain the interaction you have man. Speaker 1: So I came up. He was had his back turned to me, and I just kinda got him in a a hold, got him to the ground. He's still, like, scrubbing around and still, you know, going crazy. I turned to the guy. I'm like, hey. Call cops because they the the train arrived in Broadway Yeah. And and then waited for you guys. Okay. Speaker 0: And And And you said Speaker 1: you said you said it's Danny. Right? Yes. Correct. Speaker 0: Come on, show me Speaker 1: Sure. Yeah. Yeah. So he's standing behind me. And I kinda came like this. Okay. Speaker 0: Did you apply pressure, Daniel? Speaker 1: No. I did I wasn't I just wanted to keep him from getting to people. Speaker 0: Did you put your hooks in? Speaker 1: I yeah. Wrapped my legs. Did Speaker 0: you learn that you're just in from the Marine Corps? I did. Yes. You learned how to grapple in the marine corps. What gun level you made to? Great. We felt good. Good. Speaker 1: Alright. It was alright. I was a little bit, yeah. I should have went higher. Should have find yourself more. Yeah. I mean, hindsight's 2020. Right? Speaker 0: So he says, you know, if I don't get this, I'm gonna kill everyone. Something's jail forever. I'm willing to Is it at that point that's when you get up and decide to put him in the the hole? Yeah. I mean, it looks like a sleeper hole to me. Speaker 1: Like Speaker 0: Right. Yeah. Similar, like I'm Speaker 1: not trying to, like, I'm not trying to, like, kill the guy. Right. I'm just trying to make like, deescalate the situation. Right? Speaker 0: I understand now. I understand. Daniel, not a speaker hold, but would you say what you put him in? Because I I do take Brazilian jigts on myself. I've been taking it for many years. Would you say that was considered a redneck and choke? Speaker 1: I mean I mean, I don't I don't train Brazilian jiu jitsu, so I'm not Speaker 0: But in the wrinkle, is that considered a redneck and choke? Speaker 1: Not I don't know what what you would call that. No. I'm not sure. Speaker 0: Because I noticed that you put it around my neck and then you closed from behind. Speaker 1: I would have it on the back of your head. I didn't I didn't press forward. You didn't press forward. Speaker 0: I noticed when you were doing the thing too, you went to go put your legs around it. Speaker 1: I did. I well, I held my leg choke because if you flop it around and stuff, you can easily get out of that if you Speaker 0: don't lock it. You did that to Speaker 1: control him in place. That's correct. Explain to me what made you what made you wanna get him off? What made you Well, Speaker 0: I mean, Speaker 1: he's, like, he's threatening people. Mhmm. And, like, I'm I'm pretty I'm not confrontational. I'm not a confrontational guy. Like, I'm in the Marine Corps. I felt the need that to, you know, step in. There's women and children on the on the train. I'm sure you'll there's ladies there that that will vouch for me. And, Speaker 0: He felt like he was threatening the PP? You felt like Speaker 1: Oh, he was absolutely. Did you feel like someone's life was in danger? 100%. Okay. Speaker 0: Did anybody else hold him down? Speaker 1: Yeah. There was 2 other guys that that were helping. As soon as those guys came in and were holding his arms in, Speaker 0: I kinda let up. You let him go? Speaker 1: That's correct. Speaker 0: And when you let him go, what happened? What do you remember? He just Was he still moving? Was he still saying anything? Speaker 1: Yeah. He was moving a bit. And he I was worried that he would go again. So I was telling those guys, like, hey. Like, make sure you keep hanging on to him. Speaker 0: So the 3 of you holding him down or just the 2 other gentlemen? Speaker 1: Just the 2 other guys were Speaker 0: were hanging Speaker 1: on to him. And how long did Speaker 0: they hold him down? They were holding him down by the arms? Speaker 1: Yeah. By the arms. By the arms. Speaker 0: How long were they holding him down before the before the, cops got there? Speaker 1: Like I said, man, it's like all Speaker 0: like, you're exerting energy. Internal is going. Right? And then it's like fight or flight. Everything is going. You know? That's correct. You lose track of time. Yep. I understand. At any given time, did you reapply any kind of hold on him once you Speaker 1: let him go? Or No. No. No. Speaker 0: That was it. Alright. Okay. And what do you remember from there? Explain to me Speaker 1: Just the cops came and that was it? You got him. Okay. Okay. Speaker 0: When when the cops came, what was he doing? Speaker 1: He's just on the ground. Speaker 0: Was he saying anything? Was he Speaker 1: no? I'm sure that, like, all these people are, like, filming and shit and and, like, they're I don't know. Okay. Speaker 0: Okay. Anything else you remember, Daniel, from this this interaction? Anything else that was said? Anybody else say anything to you? Speaker 1: I mean, there's I mean, everyone on the train was I asked a few people, like, hey. Stick around when the cops come. Just so and they're like, yeah. Well, and then people were thanking me and stuff. Because he was I wasn't like, I'm I'm not trying to I'm like I said, I'm not a confrontational guy. Mhmm. And I'm not I'm not out here, like, trying to attack people. You know? Is it Not me. Not Hal. I was strange. Yeah. You know? I just felt the need that that this guy was send that he's gonna kill people that he's prepared to go to jail for life. I hear that. I'm like But he was Speaker 0: he was making enough of the scene that Speaker 2: you noticed them and then Speaker 3: you probably would have noticed Speaker 0: if you put his hands on someone. Speaker 1: I but I didn't. Okay. Alright. Speaker 0: That's fine. And then once he starts doing that, that's when you try to subdue him. Speaker 1: Yes. I'm I'm not I wasn't trying to, like, injure him. Right. I'm just trying to keep him from hurting anybody else. He's threatening people. That's what that's what we learn in the report. That's what you guys learn as dead and the cop as police officers. It's the same thing if you're off duty. You're gonna intervene in in in a situation where it's

One former senior executive described working at Google as “like being in an authoritarian country where only certain views and people were accepted.” Disillusioned former Google employees tell @FrancescaABlock and @Olivia_Reingold DEI is to blame for the Gemini fiasco. https://thefp.pub/3PomyKk

Video Transcript AI Summary
Google's culture prioritizes diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) over merit, according to former employees. They claim white males were discouraged from hiring, DEI was integrated into everything, and engineers had to consider DEI impact for software fixes. Employees felt pressured to conform to certain views and behaviors, likening the environment to an authoritarian country. Concerns about AI bias, like Google Photos mistaking black people for gorillas, led to fear of mistakes. The chatbot Gemini's bias was seen as ironic, with worries it could make inappropriate statements. This story was a collaboration between Francesca Block and the speaker. Visit thefp.com for more on ex-employees' perspectives on Google's DEI culture.

Speaker 0: Several ex Google employees told me that Google is completely overrun with the culture that puts DEI over merit and even the success of the company. And they said that Google's woke AI was not a mistake. Over the past week, I've been speaking to ex Googlers who said that they were discouraged from hiring white male employees and that DEI basically is a part of everything and that engineers even had to list the DEI impact for software fixes. All of them agreed that Google has been cowing to activist employees that are more committed to advancing social justice than making world class products. 1 former senior executive described working at Google as, quote, like being in an authoritarian country where only certain views and people were accepted. He said he walked around policing his language and his behavior. One researcher told me that Gemini flopped because the AI team lived in fear of mistakes like what happened in 2015 when Google Photos infamously mistook black people as gorillas. The researcher told me that he and his colleagues had, quote, an almost existential worry that the chatbot could do something like saying Hitler was good. He called Gemini's outright bias, quote, ironic, telling me they've done too much of a good thing, where now it becomes biased in a totally different direction. Francesca Block and I partnered on this story. You can read our investigation into what these ex employees really think about Google's culture of DEI at thefp.com.
