60 Minutes is crying because they got caught and sued by President Trump. https://t.co/RAipFQOJga

Video Transcript AI Summary
Bill Owens is stepping down from CBS, stating he wasn't allowed to run the show as he always had. This follows Trump suing CBS for $20 billion, claiming a Kamala Harris interview was deceptively edited, which CBS denies. Trump has also called for CBS to lose its broadcast license. Ben Smith of Semaphore reports Owens quit after Sherry Redstone, owner of Paramount Global, reviewed a list of stories about Trump planned by 60 Minutes, following Trump's complaints about a 60 Minutes program on Ukraine. Redstone is trying to sell Paramount Global to Skydance Media, owned by David Ellison, requiring FCC approval. It's believed Trump could use this as leverage. Owens' departure is seen as a public spectacle to highlight the pressure on the company. Smith questions if David Ellison will address the situation, noting that ignoring the news division's issues could lead to problems.

Speaker 0: Over the past months, it has become clear that I would not be allowed to run the show as I have always run it. So having defended this show and what we stand for from every angle, over time, with everything I could, I am stepping aside so the show can move forward. Owen's departure comes months after President Trump sued CBS for $20,000,000,000. After an October interview with then Vice President Kamala Harris, Trump claims the interview was deceptively edited. The network has denied that claim. Trump has also called for CBS to lose its broadcast license. Joining us now, editor in chief for Semaphore, Ben Smith. You have a lot going on there, Ben. But let's talk about this first. I think this news at least hit the media community like a meteor. That was message that Bill Owens was sending about what's happening at CBS. So what's happening at CBS? Speaker 1: Yeah. I mean, though, this was, you know, the latest in a series of, you know, essentially capitulations by media companies to pressure from from president Trump. What's different from the environment in which we've operated for most of our careers, in which, by the way, there have been our share of media scandals and screw ups and firings and quitting, is that the way it is happening now is there's pressure on the owners of media companies, whether it's Jeff Bezos at the Washington Post, Patrick Soon Chung in Los Angeles, feeling pressure on their other interests to not annoy president Trump and changing their editorial policies, their content as a result. We reported last night that, my colleague Max Tani reported that, you know, Owens quit after Sherry Redstone, the owner of the company, requested and looked at a list of stories about president Trump that the the that see that sixty Minutes was planning to broadcast. This came after Trump complained about a sixty Minutes program about Ukraine. And and Mhmm. You know, and in sixty Minutes, it is is, you know, the the definitive television news magazine of an earlier era, and a huge symbolic moment. But but Sherry Redstone's trying to sell this company requires federal approval for the deal, and these are the kind of deals that media owners are making right now. Speaker 2: Yeah. So, Ben, you've gotten there to the heart of the matter, which is that Paramount Global, where Sherry Redstone is the chairwoman, is trying to sell to Skydance Media owned by Larry Ellison, Ellison need FCC approved for that. Donald Trump could theoretically and likely use that as leverage to try to stop this that sale going forward. So now that top down pressure coming from Sherry Redstone and Paramount down to sixty minutes about the kinds of stories and the tone of the stories they're doing about Donald Trump. One way I heard it described was that this was Bill Owens just sending up a a flare Speaker 1: Mhmm. Speaker 2: And really kind of falling on a grenade and and giving up the the job that he's held, so well for so many years to put pressure and to make a public spectacle of what's going on at his company and others. So do you think this changes anything about the deal that's coming perhaps for Paramount and about the way that sixty minutes does its job? Speaker 1: You know, I I wonder I mean, the I think the real question is what David Ellison, who runs Skydance, is gonna do. You know, the I mean, the the purchaser has a lot of leverage here. And, you know, I think there is an illusion that they can they can that that they can let the people they're buying it from sort of neuter the news organization, take take the heat, take the money, and move on. And I think, you know, what you see is you buy a company. I mean, I think and you saw this at with with with CNN's parent company, that if you try to ignore a huge mess and highly politicized scandal in your news division, you're gonna have a tough few years. And I and I I think it's remarkably naive that they think that they're just gonna acquire this company, take the entertainment assets, have fun, and this whole thing will blow over. I think that's all I

The speaker expresses frustration about the replacement of characters with more diverse ones, blaming Kathleen Kennedy for the decision. They criticize Kennedy for making the movies more "lame" and causing Disney's stock to decline. The speaker then mentions Bob Iger showing them a piece of ancient artificial intelligence called the panda stone, which allowed for the creation of movies that appealed to everyone. However, the speaker faced backlash from racists who disliked the inclusion of diverse women characters. Instead of addressing the issue directly, the speaker relied on the panda stone, which eventually became unstable and opened a portal to another universe. The speaker concludes by saying this is the best explanation for why Disney movies are perceived as bad.

And then Bob Barker is all like, no. What's going on with my socks? No, Kathy, kids. Speaker 1: I saw the panda stone for the first time a few years ago. Bob Iger took us to the Disney archives and showed us an ancient piece of in Artificial intelligence that could be used to make the same movies over and over again while appealing to absolutely everyone. In The panderstone worked great for a while, but then came the hate mail. Ugly letters from racists who couldn't stand that some of the panderstone's rehashes in had diverse women characters in the lead. I decided I would show them. I would start making movies to fight all the bigotry in our society. But instead of doing any real work, I turned to the panda stone. It made things so much easier. In Soon, I was using the panda stone over and over again to try and fight all the ugly feedback, which in turn was growing stronger and stronger. In But I was fighting with the wrong tool. I used the panda stone to the point that it became unstable. It opened a portal to multiple universes Something came through. At first, we fought. I tried to send it back to its universe, but it got the upper hand. It was able instead to send me to this universe, out of its way so it could thrive in ours. Ontario is focusing on improving air quality in schools and childcare centers to benefit children's health, learning, and test scores. The government is introducing the Improving Air Quality for Our Children Act, which includes three key provisions. First, CO2 monitors will be installed in classrooms and other spaces. Second, CO2 levels will be publicly reported using a color-coded system. Lastly, the Minister of Education will work with experts to develop an Air Quality Action Plan and report on the actions taken. The bill was created in consultation with ventilation and air quality experts, public health experts, education and childcare partners, and parents. The government is urged to adopt this bill to ensure the best learning conditions for Ontario's children.
Full Transcript
Speaker 0: Every parent in Ontario wants our children to be able to learn in the best possible conditions. And, one of the things we've learned in the past few years is that good air quality is essential to ensuring our children's health and well-being, in addition to being an important factor in their ability to learn well. Addressing air quality in schools and childcare centers helps to reduce the spread of infectious diseases like COVID, RSV, and flu, which we know is incredibly important after seeing how full pediatric ERs were last fall: Good ventilation also protects against pollution and air quality issues like wildfire smoke, another issue we experienced firsthand this year and which we know will become only more important with climate change. But studies have also shown that improving air quality can boost children's test scores in math and reading. Given the government's emphasis on math and reading right now, I am sure they will want to do everything within their power to boost children's test scores. That's why today, we are tabling the Improving Air Quality for Our Children Act. The Act has 3 key provisions that will help to improve the air quality in our classrooms and licensed child care facilities. It requires all classrooms and congregate spaces such as lunchrooms, music rooms, and gymnasiums to have a CO2 monitor installed. It requires public reporting of CO2 levels using a color coded system that identifies when CO2 levels approach or exceed a maximum threshold set by the bill, and it requires the Minister of Education to convene experts to develop an Air Quality Action Plan with measures to be taken when CO2 levels approach or exceed the maximum threshold with public reporting on all actions taken. This bill was developed in consultation with experts in ventilation and air quality, public health experts, education and child care partners, and parents. We hope that the government will pay attention to this broad coalition of support, do the right thing, and adopt this bill to ensure that our children have the best, safest possible learning conditions in Ontario.
