The Gospel of John states Jesus performed unrecorded miracles, but the written gospels aim to inspire belief in Jesus as the Messiah, granting life through faith. God created Adam from dust, placing him in Eden with the command to avoid the tree of knowledge. Eve, tempted by Satan, ate the forbidden fruit, leading to their expulsion from Eden and the introduction of hardship. God promised a future savior. The angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she would conceive Jesus, the Son of God. Shepherds and wise men worshipped the newborn Jesus. John the Baptist preached repentance and recognized Jesus as the Messiah, greater than himself. Jesus chose twelve disciples and performed miracles, including calming a storm, casting out demons, and healing the sick. He taught about prayer and declared himself the Messiah to a Samaritan woman. Jesus faced opposition from Jewish leaders for breaking Sabbath rules and claiming equality with God. He fed 5,000 people with five loaves and two fish. Jesus entered Jerusalem on a colt, and cleared the temple. At the Last Supper, he instituted the Eucharist. Betrayed by Judas, Jesus was arrested, tried, and crucified. He died, was buried, and resurrected. After his resurrection, he appeared to his disciples, commissioning them to spread his teachings. The book of Revelation assures Christians that they will triumph over Satan through faith in Christ.

Speaker 0: The final passage of John states that Jesus did many other signs and miracles that are not written about, but that the gospels are written so that you all may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the son of God, and that through this belief you may have life in his name. Now, no shrub had appeared on the earth and no plant had yet sprung up. For the Lord God had not yet sent rain on the earth, but streams came up from the whole earth and watered the whole surface of the ground. Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being. The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden Of Eden. God showed Adam and Eve the beauty and fruitfulness of the garden they lived in. He told them, you may eat from every tree except one, the tree of knowledge of good and evil. If you eat from that tree, you will die. But Eve wonders and one day she goes to the tree that is forbidden and gazes upon the fruit. Satan, the serpent tempts Eve. Are you sure you aren't allowed to eat this fruit? Oh, yes. If we even touch it, we'll die. You will not die if you touch it. See. And if you eat it, you will be wise just like God. You're right. Adam, it tastes delicious and it will make you wise. But the forbidden fruit has far different effects than the serpent promised. Suddenly, Adam and Eve realize they have disobeyed God. Their innocence is taken away. We are not wise. We are just naked. We must hide. In the stillness of the garden, God comes to Adam and Eve. Have you eaten of the fruit I told you not to eat? I only ate it because the woman you gave me handed it to me. I only ate it because the serpent you created tricked me. Because you disobeyed me, you will have to leave this beautiful garden. From now on, life will be hard for you. God makes clothes for them and sends them away. Where can we go? What can we do? The perfect unity between God and his beloved creation has now broken for all time, but already God has a plan to redeem his creation. God promises that one day he will send a savior for his people. Approximately two thousand years ago, a miracle birth took place in the city of David where an angel named Gabriel, an angel sent from God and the angel said to her, do not be afraid for you have found favor with God. The innocence of early Christians who worshipped Jesus when he was born. Who worshipped him when he was a baby. The early Christians who knew not yet the name Christian or the notion denomination, but knew then they were worshiping the Messiah, king of the world. In the gospels, when Herod was the king of Judea, the angel Gabriel announced that Mary was to name him Jesus. He would be the son of God and rule over Israel forever, both fully God and fully human. In order for God to become human and save the world, he gave us his one and only miracle. The incarnation. With Saint Gabriel acting as God's representative and on behalf of humanity, Mary said, behold the handmaid of the Lord, be it unto me according to thy word. And at this moment, the son of God became incarnate in her chaste womb. According to Matthew, a group of wise shepherds of themselves and at the time living in the city of David, when an angel opened up from the heavens and told them the son of God was born. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a savior, which is Christ the Lord. And they hurried to worship their savior. Divinely warned they should not return to king Herod. Jesus, Mary, and Joseph departed for their own country another way, and they took flight and set course for Egypt. In the Old Testament, through the prophet Hosea, the Lord of hosts called his son out of Egypt. Being a messianic text, the old testament gives prophecy about the coming of Christ. From Matthew, when he arose he took the young child and his mother by night and departed for Egypt and was there until the death of Herod that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord saying, out of Egypt I called my son. Now when Herod was dead, behold an angel of the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in Egypt saying, arise, take the young child and his mother and go to the land of Israel. For those who sought the young child's life are dead. And he came and dwelt in a city called Nazareth that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, he shall be called a Nazarene. John the Baptist, Jewish prophet, venerated as we of the way know, as the man who came before and cleared the way and preached repentance. And when they confessed their sins, he baptized them in the Jordan River. John announced, I baptize you with water, but he will baptize you with the holy spirit. John was testifying about Jesus when he was shouting to the crowds. Someone is coming after me who is greater than I am for he existed long before me. This was John's testimony when the knowers of the law of Moses turned up to him and asked, who are you? I am not the Messiah. Well then, who are you? They asked. Are you Elijah? No. He replied. Are you the prophet we are expecting? No. Then who are you? What do you have to say for yourself? I am a voice shouting in the wilderness, clear the way for the Lord's coming. And then it came to be seen. From the gospel of John. John the Baptist told the pharisees who had been sent, I baptize with water, but right here in the crowd is someone you do not recognize. Though his ministry follows mine, I'm not even worthy of being his slave. Then it came to pass that John the Baptist testified, the one on whom you see the spirit descend on like a dove will baptize with the Holy Spirit. I saw this happen to Jesus, so I testify that he is the chosen one of God. The following day, John was again standing with two of his disciples. John declared, look, there is the lamb of God. When John's two disciples heard this, they followed Jesus. It was about 04:00 when they went with him to the place where he was staying, and they remained with him the rest of the day. Andrew, Simon, Peter's brother was one of these men who heard what John said and then followed Jesus. Andrew went to find his brother Simon and told him, we have found the Messiah. Then Andrew brought Simon to Jesus. Looking at Simon, Jesus said, your name is Simon, son of John, but you will be called Cephas. Peter went to Philip and told him, we have found the very person that Moses and the prophets wrote about. Nazareth exclaimed Nathaniel, Can anything good come from Nazareth? Come and see, Philip replied. How do you know me? Nathaniel asked. I could see you under the fig tree before Philip found you. You will see greater things than this. I tell you the truth. You will see heaven open up and angels from God going up and down on the son of man, the one who is the stairway between heaven and earth. Then it came to pass that Jesus chose his 12 disciples. Simon, whom he named Peter, James and John, whom Jesus nicknamed sons of thunder, Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James son of Alpheus, Thaddeus, Simon the Zealot, Judas Iscariot who later betrayed him. One day, he saw Andrew and his brother Simon throwing a net into the water for they fished for a living. Come follow me, and I will show you how to fish for people. And they left their nets and at once and all of the same and around him followed him. Jesus went out to a lake with his disciples and a large crowd followed him. They had heard of his miracles and came from all over. From Galilee, from Judea, from Jerusalem, from East Of The Jordan River, Gatherers from far and from wide came to see him. As evening came, Jesus said to his disciples, let's cross to the other side of the lake. So they took a boat and they with Jesus and Jesus with them and they started out and they were leaving the crowds behind and a fierce storm came up to them. Highways were breaking into the boat and it was about to sink. Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. His disciples woke him up shouting, teacher, don't you care that we're going to drown? When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the waves and said to the wind, silence. Be still. Suddenly, the wind stopped and there was a great calm. Then Jesus asked his disciples, why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith? So they arrived at the other side of the lake at the region of the Gerasenes. When Jesus came out of the boat, a man possessed by an evil spirit came out from the tombs to meet him. A man who lived in burial caves and could no longer be restrained even with a chain. Whenever he was put into chains and shackles as he often was, he smashed the chains from his wrists and smashed the shackles and no one was strong enough to subdue him. When Jesus was still some distance away, the man saw him, ran to meet him, and bowed low before him. With a shriek, he screamed, why are you interfering with me Jesus, son of the most high God? In the name of God, I beg you don't torture me. For Jesus had already said to the spirit, come out of the man you evil spirit. Then Jesus demanded, what is your name? And he replied, my name is Legion because there are many of us inside this man. Then the evil spirits begged him again and again not to send them to some distant place. Send us into those pigs, the spirits begged. Let us enter them. So Jesus gave them permission. The evil spirit came out of the man and entered the pigs who floundered and fell into the lake and drowned. As Jesus was leaving, the man who was demon possessed begged to go home with him. But Jesus said, no. Go home to your family and tell them everything the Lord has done for you and how merciful he has been. So the man proclaimed to the towns in that region the great things Jesus had done for him. Jesus left to Nazareth, his hometown. The next Sabbath, he began teaching in the synagogue and many who heard were amazed. They asked, where did he get all this wisdom? And where did he get all this power to perform miracles? Then they scoffed, he's just a carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James, Joseph, Judas, and Simon. Then Jesus told them, a prophet is honored everywhere except in his hometown and his own family. And because of their unbelief, he wasn't able to heal them except to lay his hands on a few sick people and heal them. Then Jesus went from village to village teaching the people and he called his 12 disciples together and sent them out two by two. Wherever you go, he said, stay in the same house until you leave town. But if anyone refuses to welcome you, shake its dust from your feet as you leave. Do this to show them that you have abandoned them to their fate. So the disciples went out and they cast out many demons and healed many sick people. He was praying in a certain place, and when he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray just as John the Baptist taught his disciples. He said to them, when you pray, say this. Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread and forgive us our sins for we ourselves forgive everyone in debt to us and do not subject us to the final test. The Lord Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John. Though Jesus himself did not baptize them, his disciples did. Eventually, he came to the Samaritan village of Sukkar near the field that Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jesus tired from a long walk sat wearily near Jacob's well. Soon a Samaritan woman came to draw water and he said to her, please give me a drink. He was alone at the time because the disciples had gone into the village to buy some food. She was surprised, Jews and Samaritans had nothing to do with each other, she thought. She said, you are a Jew. I am a Samaritan woman. Why are you asking me for a drink? If you only knew the gift God has for you and who you are speaking to, you would ask me and I would give you living water. But sir, you don't have a rope or a bucket, she said, And this well is very deep. Where would you get this living water? Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again, but those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life. Please, sir, the woman said, give me this water. I want to live forever. Go and get your husband. I don't have a husband. You're right. You don't have a husband, for you have had five husbands and you aren't even married to the man you're living with now. You certainly spoke the truth. Sir, you must be a prophet. So tell me, why is it that you Jews insist that Jerusalem is the only place of worship? Believe me, dear woman. The time is coming when it will no longer matter whether you worship the father on this mountain or in Jerusalem. I know the Messiah is coming, the one who is called Christ. When he comes, he will explain everything to us. Then Jesus told her, I am he, the one who is speaking to you. The woman left her water jar beside the well and ran back to the village telling everyone, come and see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could he possibly be the Messiah? So the people came streaming from the village to see him. Many Samaritans from the village believed in him because the woman had said, he told me everything I ever did. When they came out to see him, they begged him to stay in their village. So he stayed for two days, long enough for many to hear his message and to believe. Then they said to the woman, now we believe not just because of what you told us, but because we have heard him ourselves. Now we know that he is indeed the savior of the world. So the Jewish leaders began harassing Jesus for breaking the Sabbath rules. But Christ replied, my father is always working and so am I. So the Jewish leaders tried all the harder to find a way to kill him. Because not only now was Jesus breaking the Sabbath, he was also calling God his father, thereby making himself equal with God. So Jesus explained, I tell you the truth. The son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the father doing. Whatever the father does, the son also does. For just as the father gives life to those he raises from the dead, so the son gives life to anyone he wants. In addition, the father judges no one. Instead, he has given the son absolute authority to judge so that everyone will honor the son just as they honor the father. According to the gospels, Jesus did not break the Sabbath, but instead reinforced its importance for life. The anointed one healed people on the Sabbath to help them, and he also did it to glorify God. When his disciples were accused of breaking the Sabbath, Jesus spoke. The Sabbath was made for man and not man for the Sabbath. Therefore, the son of man is also Lord of the Sabbath. Then he climbed a hill and sat down with his disciples around him. It was nearly time for the Jewish Passover celebration. He soon saw a huge crowd of people coming to look for him. Turning to Philip, he asked, where can we buy bread to feed all these people? He was testing Philip for he already knew what he was going to do. Then Andrew, Simon Peter's brother spoke up. There's a young boy here with five barley loaves and two fish, but what good is that with this huge crowd? Tell everyone to sit down, Jesus said. The men alone numbered about 5,000. He took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward, he did the same with the fish and they all ate as much as they wanted. After everyone was full, he told his disciples, now gather the leftovers so that nothing is wasted. So they picked up the pieces and filled 12 baskets with scraps left by the people who had eaten from the five barley loaves. When the people saw him, they exclaimed, surely he is the prophet we have been expecting. That evening, Jesus's disciples went down to the shore to wait for him. But as darkness fell and Jesus still hadn't come back, they got into the boat and headed across the lake toward Capernaum. Soon a gale swept down upon them and the sea grew very rough. They had rode three or four miles when suddenly they saw him walking on the water. Now when they drew near Jerusalem to Bethpage in Bethany at the Mount Of Olives, he sent two of his disciples. And he said to them, go into the village opposite you. You will find a colt tied on which no one has sat. Loose it and bring it. So the disciples did what the Lord said and they brought the colt which no one had ever sat on to Jesus. And many spread their clothes on the road. Then those who went before and those who followed cried out saying, Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is the kingdom of our father David. Hosanna in the highest. And he went into the temple in Jerusalem and went and looked around at all things. But as the hour was late, he and his disciples left to Bethany. In the following days, in a profound act of righteousness, Jesus clears the temple. So they came to Jerusalem, then he went into the temple and began to drive out those who bought and sold in the temple. And he overturned the tables of the money changers and the seats of those who sold doves. Then he taught them saying to them, is it not written my house shall be called a house of prayer for all nations, but you have made it a den of thieves. And the scribes and chief priests heard this, and then they sought how they might destroy him for they feared him because all the people were astonished at his teaching. Then Jesus told his disciples, do not let anyone mislead you for many will come in my name claiming I am the Messiah. They will deceive many and many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other, but the one who endures till the end will be saved. When Passover came around evening time, Jesus sat down at the table with the 12 disciples who had prepared a Passover meal. As they were eating, he took some bread and blessed it. Then he broke it in pieces and gave it to his disciples saying, eat of it. This is my body. And he took a cup of wine and gave thanks to God for it. He gave it to them and said, drink of it. This is my blood which confirms the covenant between God and his people. It is poured out as a sacrifice to forgive the sins of many. Mark my words, I will not drink wine again until I dine with you in my father's kingdom. Then they sang a hymn and went out to the Mount Of Olives. Have I been with you all this time Philip and yet you still do not know who I am? Anyone who has seen me has seen the father. Don't you believe that I am in the father and the father is in me? The words I speak are not my own, but the father who is in me does his work through me. Just believe that I am in the father and the father is in me, or at least believe because of the work you have seen me do. I tell you the truth, anyone who believes in me will do the same works I have done and even greater works because I am going to be with the father. He crossed to Kidron Valley with his disciples and entered a grove of olive trees. Judas, the betrayer, knew this place because he who was the Messiah had often gone there with his disciples. Judas showed up with the pharisees, Roman soldiers and temple guards. Now, with blazing torches, lanterns and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove. He fully realized what was to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them where they were. Who are you looking for? He asked. Jesus, the Nazarene, they replied. When the son of man said to them, I am he, the temple guards drew back and fell. So he asked again, whom do you seek? Jesus of Nazareth. I told you that I am he and since I am the one you want, let these others go. He did this to fulfill his own statement. I did not lose a single one of those you have given me. Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus. But Jesus said to Peter, put your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the father has given me? And he touched the man's ear and healed him. So the soldiers, their commanding officer and the temple guards arrested him and tied him up. Then he was taken to the headquarters of the Roman governor. His accusers weren't allowed inside because it would defile them and prevent them from celebrating Passover. So Pilate, the governor walked up on the knowers of the law and asked, what is your charge against this man? We wouldn't have handed him over to you if he weren't a criminal. Then take him away and judge him by your own law. This fulfilled Jesus' description about the way he would die. Then, Pilate went back into his headquarters and called for Jesus to be brought to him. Are you the king of the Jews? Is this your question? What did others tell you about me? My kingdom is not of this world. If it were, my followers would have prevented me from being handed over to the Jewish leaders. So you're a king? You say I am a king. Actually, I was born and came into the world to testify to the truth. What is truth? Pilate asked. Then Pilate went out again to the people and told them, he is not guilty of any crime, but you have a custom of allowing me to release one prisoner at Passover. Would you like me to release this king of the Jews? They shouted back, not this man. We want Barabbas. Then, Pilate had Jesus flogged with a lead tipped whip. The soldiers swove a crown of thorns and put it on his head and they put a purple robe on him. Hail king of the Jews, they mocked as they slapped him across the face. Then Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe and Pilate said, look, here is the man. When the knowers of the law saw him, the leading priests and temple guards began screaming, crucify him, take him yourselves and crucify him. By our law, he ought to die because he called himself the son of God. Pilate, in a frightened state, went back to his headquarters with Jesus and asked him, where are you from? But Jesus gave no answer. Don't you know I have the power to crucify you? You would have no power over me at all if it weren't handed to you from above. So the one who handed me over to you has the greater sin. Then, Pilate tried to release him, but the Jewish leaders shouted, if you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar. And when they said this, Pilate brought Jesus out to them again and said to the people, look, here is your king. Away with him, they shouted. We have no king but Caesar. Then Pilate turned Jesus over to them to be crucified. Carrying the cross by himself, he went to the place called Place Of The Skull and it was there they nailed him to the cross. Two others were crucified with him, one on either side. Standing near the cross were Jesus's mother and his mother's sister Mary, and also another Mary, Mary Magdalene. When Jesus saw his mother standing there besides the disciple he loved, he said to her, dear woman, here is your son. And he said to his disciple, here is your mother. And from then on, the disciple took her into his home. Jesus knew that his mission was now finished and to fulfill scripture he said, I'm thirsty. They soaked the sponge with sour wine and held it to his lips. After tasting it, he said, it is finished. Then he bowed his head and gave up his spirit. His body was taken down from the cross and placed inside of a tomb. Following Jewish burial custom, they wrapped his body with spices and long sheets of linen cloth. The place of crucifixion was near a garden where there was a tomb never used before. From John, Mary was standing outside the tomb crying and as she wept, she stooped and looked in. She saw two white robed angels. They asked her, why are you crying? Because they have taken away my Lord and I don't know where they have put him. She turned to leave and saw someone standing there. It was Jesus, but she didn't recognize him. She thought he was the gardener. Sir, she said, if you have taken him away, tell me. Mary, Jesus said. Rabboni, Mary shouted. Rabboni means teacher. Do not cling to me, said Jesus, for I have not yet ascended to my father in heaven. But go find my brothers and tell them that I am ascending to my father and your father, to my God and your God. Because they were afraid of the Jewish authorities at the time, on Sunday evenings, disciples would meet together behind locked doors. Suddenly, Jesus was standing there among them. But Thomas the apostle wasn't there to bear witness. So when they told him they had seen Jesus rise from the dead, Thomas doubted and said unto them, unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nail marks and put my hands into his side, I will not believe. Eight days later, the disciples were together again and this time Thomas was with them. The doors were locked but suddenly just as before Jesus was standing among them. Peace be with you, he said. Then he said to Thomas, put your finger here and look at my hands. Put your hand into the wound in my side. Don't be faithless any longer. Believe. Thomas exclaimed, my Lord and my God. You have believed because you have seen. Blessed are those who believe and have not yet seen. Then the 11 disciples left for Galilee, going to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him. I have been given all authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the father, and of the son, and of the holy spirit. Christ's overwhelming defeat against the kingdom of Satan ushered in the everlasting reign of God. Even the forces of evil carry out the divine plan. For God is the sovereign Lord of history. The book of Revelation has its origins amidst crisis, but it remains meaningful to Christians of all time in the face of apparently insuperable evil either from within or from without. All Christians are called to trust in Jesus' promise. No matter what persecution Christians endure, they will in the end triumph over Satan and his cohorts because of their fidelity to Christ the victor, message of hope and consolation for all who dare to believe.
