I am Jewish and love my people, Judaism, and our traditions. But I am not a Zionist. I see Zionism as an ideology aiming for a Jewish state in a land with a Palestinian majority, citing land purchases, Hebrew Labor, mass expulsions, and wars from 1948 onward. I’ve read claims of apartheid and genocide by human rights groups linked to Zionist policies. Judaism and Zionism are not the same; Zionism is collapsing while Judaism endures.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

Hi Michael, I'm Jewish. Many of my closest friends are Jewish. I love them all. My whole family is Jewish, I love them all too. My community is Jewish. Love them all. I love Judaism. I host shabbat dinners, celebrate Jewish holidays, sing Jewish prayers, study Torah & Talmud, and love Jewish culture, history and expression. But I'm not a Zionist. Zionism was an ideology that said, let's create a Jewish state in a country that's 97%+ non-Jewish. That's why, when Zionists bought land in Palestine from the 1900s-1948, they uprooted the people living on the land because they weren't jewish. That's why, when Zionists created cooperatives in Palestine in the 1910s, 1920s and 1930s, they insisted on "Hebrew Labor", i.e., "Jews only" & they tried to expel Palestinian Arabs from working at Jewish-owned enterprises. https://jstor.org/stable/10.1525/jps.2007.36.2.25 That's why, in 1948, Zionists militias ethnically cleansed 750,000 Palestinians from their homes. That's why, from 1949-1956, Israeli forces shot & killed b/w 2,700-5,000 overwhelmingly unarmed Palestinians trying to return to their homes after the war. The refugees had the wrong DNA! (source: Benny Morris, Border Wars, p.416). That's why Israel expelled another ~30-40,000 Palestinians from Israel from 1949-1959. https://palestinenexus.com/articles/israel-ethnic-cleansing-1949-1965 That's why Israel expelled another ~250,000 Palestinians from Gaza & the West Bank when it occupied those territories in 1967. That's why Israel continued to expel Palestinians from the occupied territories from 1968-1993, many hundreds of thousands of them. They had the wrong DNA! https://palestinenexus.com/articles/israels-ethnic-cleansing-of-the-palestinians-1968-1993 Zionists wanted to create a Jewish State with a Jewish majority in a land of overwhelmingly Palestinians. That's why Israel has become such a pariah state over the years, because it's insistence on jewish rule in a country with so many Palestinians. That's why Zionism has led Israel to become an apartheid state, according to every relevant human rights organization ( @ICAHD in 2010, @UNESCWA in 2017, @YeshDin in 2020, @AdalahCenter in 2020, @btselem in 2021, @hrw in 2021, @fidh_en in 2021, @alhaq_org in 2022, @Addameer in 2022, @AlMezanCenter in 2022, @cacalqudsuni in 2022, @AdvocacyJlac in 2022, @miftahpal in 2022, @ICJ_org in 2022, @DAWNmenaorg in 2022, @amnesty in 2022), since it cannot grant the ~5-6 million occupied Palestinians Israeli citizenship. Israel chose apartheid over democracy to preserve its Jewish majority. Zionism also explains why Israel is now committing genocide (according to @hrw @amnesty @MSF @AlHaq @UNHumanRights @UN_HRC @pchrgaza @AlMezanCenter @WarOnWant @PHRIsrael @BtSIsrael & 86% of the members of the International Association of Genocide Scholars), because, what a Zionist dream it would have been had Palestine been a land without any people on it! the ideology incentivized genocide. So, please don't conflate Judaism -- that has existed for 3,300+ years -- with your 150-yr-old anti-Jewish ideology founded on the principles of forcible displacement, supremacy for one group over others, apartheid and now genocide. Judaism will last as long as their are humans on the planet. Zionism is imploding in real time.

Before WWI, most Zionists in Palestine were there illegally due to Ottoman restrictions on Jewish immigration. During the British Mandate, they continued to develop Tel Aviv through colonial violence, as the British suppressed the political will of 85% of the local population who opposed Zionism, as noted by the King Crane Commission in 1919. I appreciate discussions about history, as greater awareness often leads to increased hostility toward Zionism.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

Nearly all Zionists in Palestine before WWI were living there illegally since the Ottomans banned Jewish immigration to Palestine in the early 1880s. Then, they were able to continue to build Tel Aviv during the British Mandate period thru colonial violence. That is, the British used force to suppress the political will of 85% of the local population — who rejected Zionism as indicated by the King Crane Commission of 1919 — that’s how Tel Aviv got built. Appreciate you bringing up history — as the more history people know — the more hostile they become to Zionism.

Time Magazine asked me to write a piece on Hamas, promising openness to different perspectives. After initial edits, a second editor removed crucial evidence supporting my argument that Israeli violence radicalized Hamas. Key points I presented included the impact of Israeli military actions during the intifada, historical violence against Palestinians, the torture of Hamas leader Ahmed Yassin's son, and insights from a New York Magazine article on Hamas militants. I refused to omit this evidence, leading to the piece's rejection. I ultimately published it independently.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

Time Magazine is TOXIC. Last year, Time Magazine asked me to write a 1000 word piece on the history of Hamas. In their words, "we're of course open to different angles & ideas that you feel are most pertinent based on your analysis of the situation." Spoiler alert: that turned out to be false. I wrote the piece. First editor made some excellent suggestions. I revised & re-submitted. Then it went to a second editor (Adam Rasmi @adamrasmi). Adam went through the article & removed all of the important evidence for my argument. It was as if @TIME Magazine was only willing to publish the piece if I agreed to remove all of the supporting evidence for my argument. Strange. This was my response: "The argument of my essay is that Israeli violence radicalized Hamas. Four of the key pieces of evidence I share in the piece to support this argument are: 1. The violence committed by the Israeli military in Gaza during the first year of the intifada (142 Palestinians killed, 0 Israelis killed), the same time that Hamas officially transitioned from charity org. to militant group. 2. the Israeli violence committed against Palestinians up until 1991, i.e. the period in which Hamas transitioned from attacking Israeli military targets to also attacking Israeli civilian targets. 3. The torture of the son of Hamas's leader Ahmed Yassin in front of Yassin himself. 4. An excellent @NYMag piece based on many interviews w/ Hamas militants, saying they embraced violence not b/c of some eternal Jew hatred or Israel hatred, but rather b/c of the violence committed against them, especially against innocent Palestinian civilians. These four pieces of evidence, critical to the argument of the essay, were all removed in the latest round of edits. I wrote back to Time Magazine: I rejected the suggestion to remove the evidence for my argument. Needless to say, they never published the piece. So I published the piece here: https://palestinenexus.com/articles/israeli-violence-radicalized-hamas

I shared a series of posts highlighting various examples of what I perceive as apartheid in Israel. I pointed out the stark differences in treatment between Palestinians and Jews in areas like Silwan, the West Bank, and Hebron. I noted how Palestinians face severe penalties for actions that Jews are often exempt from, such as arrests without charges and unequal access to resources. I also referenced the demolition of Palestinian homes and the lack of accountability for violence against Palestinians. Major human rights organizations have echoed these concerns, labeling Israel as an apartheid state.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

10 examples of Israeli apartheid at work. 🧵

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If u are Palestinian from Silwan (Ramzi Abbasi), Israel can imprison u for 120 days, no reason provided. If u are Jewish in Silwan, u can ethnically cleanse Palestinians & Israel will imprison those protesting being cleansed. Not so complicated after all. It's called apartheid.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If you are Palestinian in the West Bank & you throw a stone, you face arrest & 20 years in prison. If you are Jewish in the West Bank & you throw a stone, the Israeli military will arrest the people you throw the stone at. Not so complicated after all. It's called apartheid.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If you are a Palestinian & you live on Shuhada Street in Hebron, u must climb onto your rooftop to an adjacent street to leave your house, b/c you aren't allowed on the street. If you are Jewish, you can come & go as u like. Not so complicated after all. It's called apartheid.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If you are Jewish & arrested in Adora, Israeli law requires you be informed of the reason. If you are a Palestinian & arrested in Fer'a (200 meters away), Israeli law does not require u be informed of the reason. Not so complicated after all. It's called apartheid.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If you are Jewish & move to Israel, you are given subsidized housing. If you are Bedouin & lived in Israel before the country existed, your home may be demolished b/c u are the incorrect ethnicity. Not so complicated after all. It's called apartheid.

@972mag - +972 Magazine

NOW: Israeli forces demolish the mosque in the Bedouin village of Umm Al-Hiran in the Negev, where residents have self-demolished their homes after threats from the authorities. Israel plans to build a Jewish town, Hiran, in its place. 📸: @OrenZiv_ @mekomit @JustVisionMedia

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If you are a Jew & you kill a Palestinian in the West Bank, you will likely face no consequences. If u are a Palestinian & you kill a Jew you will likely be killed on the spot.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If you are a Jew in Jaffa, Israel will build Jewish-only buildings for you. If you are a Palestinian in Jaffa, Israel will issue eviction + demolition orders on your house (in 1 out of 10 cases). This is in Israel "proper". Not so complicated after all. It's called apartheid.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

A Jew born on Road 3157 who organizes 11 people for a pol. purpose w/out a permit faces 0 yrs in prison. A Palestinian born on Road 3157 who organizes 11 people for a pol. purpose w/out a permit faces up to 10 yrs in prison. Not so complicated after all. It's called apartheid.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

If you live in (Jewish) West Jerusalem, your water runs 24hrs/day, 7 days a week. If you live in (Palestinian) East Jerusalem, your water runs 1-2 days/week or 4-9hrs/week in some cases. I explore the connection between Zionism and colonialism, noting that many early Zionist organizations openly used terms like "colonial" in their titles. This reflects a broader Western view of colonization as a noble endeavor. Prominent Zionist leaders, such as Max Nordau and Theodor Herzl, explicitly compared their movement to other colonial efforts, seeking to replicate similar strategies. Herzl even proposed plans for Jewish settlement in areas like Cyprus, while others aimed to alter the demographic landscape of Palestine. For a comprehensive understanding of this history, further resources are available.

Zionism = Colonialism. A 🧵

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

Many (most?) Zionist organizations used the words "Colonial" or "Colonization" (later they were changed when colonialism fell from grace): 1) The Jewish Colonial Trust 2) Imperial Charter for the Colonization of Palestine 3) Jewish Colonization Association 4) Palestine Jewish Colonization Association That's b/c colonization was considered to be noble by most in the West, since it was bringing Western civilization to the uncivilized natives. All major Zionist leaders held this worldview.

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

Zionist leaders often compared their movement to other colonial movements: In 1897, at the First Zionist Congress, Max Nordau said: “We will endeavor to do in the Near East what the English did in India.” https://mondoweiss.net/2014/05/determination-haunts-policy/ In an 1899 speech in London, Herzl said: “I should think that here in England, the Zionist idea, which is a colonial one, should be easily & quickly understood in England.” https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC10099254/

The violence committed by the Israeli military in Gaza during the first year of the intifada (142 Palestinians killed, 0 Israelis killed), the same time that Hamas officially transitioned. 2. the Israeli violence committed against Palestinians up until 1991, i.e. the period in which Hamas transitioned from attacking Israeli military targets to attacking Israeli civilian targets. 3. The torture of Yassin's son in front of him 4. The NY Mag reporting where the Hamas militants interviewed themselves saying they embraced violence not because of some eternal hatred of the jews or of the state of Israel but because of the violence committed against them, especially against innocent palestinian civilians. These four pieces of evidence -- critical to the argument of the essay -- were all removed in the latest round of edits. I've rejected those suggestions, because I don't think it makes sense to remove the most compelling pieces of evidence." Needless to say, they never published the piece. What a toxic publication. So I published the piece here: https://palestine.beehiiv.com/p/israeli-violence-radicalized-hamas

Israel's history of torturing Palestinians is highlighted in a series of posts. Instances of torture, including beatings, sexual violence, electric shocks, and psychological torture, are described. The posts also mention the withholding of food, injection of unknown substances, and the use of handcuffs during meals and bathroom use. Various cases of torture from different years are mentioned, along with the use of solitary confinement and worsening prison conditions. The posts emphasize that this is only a small sample of the larger issue.

Israel has a history of using human shields, as evidenced by numerous incidents. These include using aid trucks, elderly individuals, civilians, hospital staff, and children as human shields. Israeli settlements in border areas were initially established as a first line of defense, and many settlements in the West Bank continue to serve military purposes. The proximity of Israeli military headquarters and radio stations to civilian areas raises concerns about the safety of innocent Israeli children. The blurring of lines between combatants and civilians is observed in Israeli settlements in the Occupied Palestinian Territories.

Now, a brief summary of Israel's use of Israeli civilians as human shields: In the 1950s, Israel built civilian centers in border areas to serve as a first line of military defense. 108 such settlements were built in Israel after 1948, including many of the Israeli towns near Gaza like Nahal Oz. Israeli historian Yoav Gelber put it this way: "Originally, the border settlements served as Israel’s first line of defense. They defended themselves & supplemented the then small regular army (three brigades) in providing cover for the mobilization of the reserve formations. The status of those living in the border settlements was identical to that of reserve soldiers. They were organized in companies and platoons in the border towns and villages and integrated into the IDF’s territorial hierarchy of areas and districts under territorial commands. They were trained and equipped according to their mission, including anti-tank and light support arms." https://jstribune.com/gelber-israels-revised-national-security-doctrine-must-include-border-defense/ The Israeli military HQ is in the Tel Aviv city center, a few hundred meters from a large high school. In recent posts, there have been reports of ongoing violence and conflicts in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Israeli forces have been accused of killing Palestinians, including children, and preventing medical aid from reaching victims. There have also been protests and injuries in Gaza, as well as arrests at a university. The number of Palestinian casualties in 2023 is on track to be the highest in nearly 20 years. The situation is further complicated by a long-standing blockade on Gaza. It is important to note that the origins of the current conflict can be traced back to 2007.

This came after 15yrs of an Israeli-led, Egyptian supported siege on Gaza, making the place "unlivable" already in 2020, according to the @UN. Note as well that imposing a blockade is act of war. The origins of the current war can be traced to June '07

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

According to international law, it is an act of war to impose a blockade. So, no, Hamas did not start this war. Israeli military's history of using Palestinians as human shields is highlighted through various incidents. These incidents include the use of blindfolded detainees, forcing children to stand in front of military vehicles, and testimonies of being used as shields. Reports from different years and the Goldstone Report provide evidence of this practice. The proximity of the Israeli military headquarters to civilian areas is also questioned. The post urges readers to challenge the narrative that Hamas uses human shields and emphasizes the need to share this information.

Israel's policy of starving Gaza has been ongoing for 33 years. The permit regime and subsequent lockdowns have led to food insecurity and high unemployment rates. The Israeli military's tightening of the siege in 2007 worsened the situation. Israel aimed to make the people suffer without starving them, but the population's caloric needs were calculated to ensure no starvation occurred. By 2022, Gaza's population was on the brink of collapse, with high levels of food insecurity and financial struggles. The unfolding famine is being covered in the newsletter "Palestinian in Your Inbox."

It’s been 5 weeks since @hrw said Israel was starving Palestinians “as a weapon of war.” 5 weeks since the @UN said >1 in 4 people in Gaza are starving; 5 weeks since the @WHO said the risk of famine is “increasing each day;” hrs since the @UN said “everyone in Gaza is hungry”

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

The famine unfolding before our eyes did not begin 3 months ago. It began 33yrs ago, when, in Jan 1991, Israel required all Palestinians in Gaza to obtain permits to enter Israel. Overnight, Israel threatened the livelihoods of 40% of Gaza, then employed in Israel. Source:

Israel's permit regime begot its lockdown regime, which is when the food insecurity in Gaza first reached emergency levels. Israel imposed lockdowns for 64 days in '94, 84 days in '95 & 90 days in '96. During periods of total lockdowns, unemployment reached 70% in the Gaza Strip. Israel wanted to make the people of Gaza suffer, but not starve. At the time, Israel didn’t think the world would allow it to actually starve Palestinians to death in Gaza. (Turns out they were wrong about that). And so, to ensure no starvation took place, the Israeli Health Ministry began to calculate the caloric needs of the population of Gaza & allow that much food in. Dov Weisglass, an adviser to former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, summed up Israel’s policy this way: “The idea is to put the Palestinians on a diet, but not to make them die of hunger.” Source: https://www.haaretz.com/2012-10-17/ty-article/.premium/israels-gaza-quota-2-279-calories-a-day/0000017f-e0f2-d7b2-a77f-e3f755550000

It's intriguing how liberal Zionists criticize Netanyahu's embrace of Elon Musk, given their own history of embracing anti-Jewish sentiments. Theodor Herzl, a prominent Zionist, used derogatory terms like "Mauschel" to describe Jews opposing Zionism. Max Nordau, Herzl's associate, portrayed Jews as diseased and circumcised. Arthur Ruppin believed in racial purity and rejected Jewish immigrants lacking a "blood connection." Ze'ev Jabotinsky described Jews as ugly and inferior, yet later claimed they were a "superior race." Győző Istóczy and Wilhelm Marr, both Zionists, propagated antisemitic ideas. Arthur Balfour, while restricting Jewish immigration to Britain, supported Jewish immigration to Palestine. (499 characters)

It's strange so many liberal Zionists are angry that @netanyahu would so openly embrace @elonmusk despite his anti-Jewish tendencies. It's strange b/c Zionists have long embraced anti-Jewish tendencies. In fact, many of Zionism's champions were deeply anti-Jewish. A 🧵

@_ZachFoster - Zachary Foster

In 1897, Theodor Herzl published a text, "Mauschel," a derogatory term for Jewish Germans connoting cheating & insincerity. Herzl believed Jews who opposed Zionism were "Mauschels," who he described as a “distortion of human character, something unspeakably low & repugnant."
