I went to church today for Easter—not because I’m Christian or trying to be. I went out of respect for my boyfriend’s family, who are. I don’t follow any religion, and I honestly can’t see myself ever going back to one. The whole message was about love. That God loves you. Jesus loves you. He died for your sins. And sitting there, I couldn’t help but compare it to what I grew up with. I practiced Islam until I was 18. I was religious. I’ve been to more Islamic ceremonies and events than I can count. And let me tell you: fear is at the core of everything. You’re constantly reminded how you’ll burn in hell if you don’t blindly follow what Mohammad said. There’s no message of love. No warmth. No compassion. Just threats. Just control. The Muslim god isn’t a merciful one—he’s a tyrant, always ready to throw you into hell over the smallest thing. Today just reminded me how deeply I hate Islam. Islam is not a religion of peace. It’s a religion of fear, hate, and violence.

I was born and raised Muslim. As women, we’re considered half of men. Under Islamic law, we have to obey men if we don’t want to be lashed, beaten, or oppressed. Our fathers hold authority over our lives and, under Sharia, can end our lives if they see us as a threat to Islam or their dignity. We have no autonomy over our bodies; according to Sharia, our husbands can force themselves on us because that’s considered a wifely duty. We can’t even make basic decisions like choosing what to wear or traveling without permission from a male authority, be it a husband, father, or government enforcing Sharia. We can be forced into marriage as children under 18 (9-13 yo in Iran). In some Muslim countries, like Iran, we can be forced to marry our rap*ist and are required to carry a pregnancy from ra*pe to term. And, as a former Muslim, I am sentenced to death for leaving Islam. Happy Islamophobia Awareness Month!

If you are born and raised in the Middle East I understand how you can be brainwashed and believe the propaganda. But if you were born and raised in Western countries, in secular families, if you are White and privileged and still are brainwashed by #Hamas/#IRGCterrorists propaganda, then you are just an idiot. You chose to be stupid.
