German Chancellor Merz: If the number of soldiers does not increase quickly enough, we will still in this legislative period have to discuss mandatory elements of military service — at least for young men. Women cannot yet be included, because the constitution does not allow it.

Video Transcript AI Summary
The speaker states that the decision was right, just as the decision is right that we have now amended the Wehrdienstgesetz and, at first, on the basis of voluntariness, attempt to restore the necessary strength of our armed forces. This is described as not being an entirely easy decision. Some of us, including the speaker, might have wished for more far-reaching decisions. Nevertheless, the speaker emphasizes that we reserve the right to pursue those further measures if needed. If it does not succeed in increasing the number of soldiers as quickly as required, then we must consider, even within this electoral term, the introduction of compulsory elements of conscription, at least for young men. The speaker notes that women cannot be included yet because the Grundgesetz does not permit this. There is a personal sentiment expressed: the speaker would also like to see it differently. Specifically, the speaker would like to realize a mandatory societal service year in the country. This is presented as a goal or an aspiration for the country, framed as a desired policy direction. In recounting the policy shift, the speaker highlights the move away from universal conscription toward a voluntary system as the initial approach to rebuilding the armed forces, while acknowledging that the voluntary path may not be sufficient to meet manpower targets promptly. The possibility of reintroducing compulsory service elements is identified as a policy option that could be revisited if required by defense needs within the current political timeframe. The discussion underscores a careful balance between adherence to constitutional constraints, practical defense requirements, and political willingness to adjust policy in response to the pace of military staffing. Throughout, the speaker frames the issue as one of strategic flexibility: maintaining the option to pursue stronger or additional measures if voluntary recruitment does not achieve the necessary growth in personnel, while recognizing constitutional limitations that prevent immediate inclusion of women in conscription. The overall thrust is that a voluntary framework is in place to rebuild the forces, with a readiness to consider compulsory elements for young men if the situation necessitates it, and a broader aspiration for a mandatory year of national service as a societal reform, though not yet realizable under the current constitutional arrangement.

Gold, Guns, and Genocide: The UAE’s Shadow War in Sudan The United Arab Emirates is accused of enabling Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in their ongoing war against the Sudanese army by supplying weapons, drones, and funding through covert cargo flights. The RSF controls major gold mines in Darfur, and over $115 billion in undeclared African gold has flowed into the UAE over the past decade. RSF’s offensive on El Fasher has trapped more than 400,000 civilians, cutting off food and aid while reports of massacres and starvation mount. 🔗 READ MORE: https://clashreport.com/focus/articles/why-wont-the-uae-end-the-war-in-sudan-0ck8x1jfikmf

El Fasher, North Darfur, a city of 400,000 civilians, has been under RSF blockade for eighteen months with no food, no medicine, and no way out. Drones circle overhead; aid convoys are bombed; children survive on animal feed. Hospitals have collapsed and disease spreads through the camps. The world calls it famine, but this is described as deliberate starvation. The UAE is alleged to be central to the war’s continuation, with claims that the architect behind the siege survives only through a lifeline built in Abu Dhabi. UN investigators documented a heavy rotation of cargo flights from UAE airfields to Chad and Darfur, and aircraft disappearing from radar manifests with Red Crescent logos masking crates of weapons and drones. When the United Nations tried to condemn the El Fasher siege, the UAE blocked the resolution shielding the forced starving civilians. Each plane landing in Darfur is said to keep the siege alive. Independent inquiries confirm RSF forces systematically target non-Arab tribes, including Massalit, Zaghawa, and Berti. In 2023, up to 15,000 people were massacred in El Janaina; in 2025, another 1,500 were slaughtered at Sudan’s largest displacement camp. Survivors recount commanders ordering fighters to wipe out all the Zaghawa, with entire villages burned and civilians executed at checkpoints, and women and children buried in mass graves. This is described as genocide, financed by foreign gold and protected by silence. The UAE could end Sudan’s war but it won’t. The report mentions chemical weapons and foreign mercenaries, with doctors in Darfur describing victims with severe burns, respiratory failure, and corneal injuries after RSF bombardments, symptoms suggested to be exposure to chemical agents. These reports are under investigation, but if proven, they would mark a new phase of chemical warfare against civilians under Emirati-supplied skies. Investigative files also allege Colombian mercenaries recruited through private networks linked to Emirati contractors, trained veterans deployed to reinforce RSF positions during the siege, bringing imported expertise and death. The UAE could end Sudan’s war but it won’t. The motive is described as gold and power. Between 2012 and 2022, an estimated 2,569 tons of undeclared gold valued at about $115 billion were illicitly exported from Africa, the vast majority flowing to Dubai. Swiss aid notes the UAE has emerged as a key center for smuggled African gold, importing hundreds of tons annually, including roughly 435 tons in 2022. RSF front companies, run by Hamedi’s brothers in Dubai, allegedly sell this gold, launder profits, and purchase weapons devastating Sudan. Every ounce refined in Dubai is said to carry the weight of Sudanese blood. The false narrative claims Abu Dhabi backs the RSF to fight Islamism, yet the RSF was created by Islamists. The real goal is control of Sudan’s gold, farmland, and Red Sea ports. The pattern—proxies, fuel chaos, then profit from reconstruction and resource access—extends from Yemen to Libya to Darfur. The final claim is that cut Emirati funding, stop the flights, and freeze the cover would cause the RSF to collapse within weeks, lifting the siege, allowing aid to flow, and ending famine, but it concludes that Abu Dhabi will not act because chaos is profitable and gold outweighs justice. Every child starving in El Fasher, every body in a shallow grave, every smuggled bar of gold is linked to the same source: the UAE could end Sudan’s war but it won’t.

We have underestimated Chinese power in the world. The trains are fabulous: Beijing to Shanghai in four and a half hours, roughly a thousand kilometers, unlike Amtrak’s typical long-haul experiences. The infrastructure strength is one key advantage. A second is their scientific and technological capacity, which is crucial for the coming decades. The question is: which society will turn out more scientists and engineers? A data point: 34% of first-year students in Chinese universities study engineering or a STEM field, while the United States is at 5.6%. And they are a much bigger country. At Harvard graduation, when we ask our graduate students to stand up as a class, chemistry majors, biology majors, physics majors largely consist of Asian Americans, or Americans of Asian ethnicity, or Chinese American citizens. Last week, when President Trump gathered all the tech titans of the United States in the White House, a tremendous number of those tech titans are Indian Americans and Chinese Americans. We’re not competing when it really matters for the future, and that’s on technology. The PLA, some have said, well, it hasn’t fought since 1978. What is it worth? I’ve seen the PLA and I think we’ve underestimated their military strength and their technology strength. And one other thing: the Communist Party of China is strategic, and they don’t have to worry about what the press says. That can be a good thing to have the press challenging the government, but they have nobody opposing them, so they can make big bets over ten, twenty, thirty years. Mary and I were mentioning one of them. For thirty-five consecutive years, the Chinese foreign minister, whoever that person is, has made his first trip of the year in January to Africa to show the Africans you are our priority. I think President Trump never went to Africa in his first term. President Biden went once to Angola for two or three days at the end of his term, just before he resigned. They’re strategic, and we’re not competing on that level. So, actually, I think the Chinese in technology, military, and economics are stronger than we think they are, and we’ve underestimated them, and we can’t do that any longer.

I outlined a comprehensive peace plan for Gaza, aiming to create a deradicalized zone that benefits its people. Key points include immediate war cessation upon agreement, hostages' return, and the release of prisoners. A transitional governance structure will be established, led by a technocratic committee and overseen by an international body chaired by me. Economic development initiatives will be launched, and a demilitarization process will ensure no threats remain. The plan emphasizes cooperation, stability, and a pathway to Palestinian self-determination.

@clashreport - Clash Report

FULL details of Trump's Gaza Peace plan: 1. Gaza will be a deradicalized terror-free zone that does not pose a threat to its neighbors. 2. Gaza will be redeveloped for the benefit of the people of Gaza, who have suffered more than enough. 3. If both sides agree to this proposal, the war will immediately end. Israeli forces will withdraw to the agreed upon line to prepare for a hostage release. During this time, all military operations, including aerial and artillery bombardment, will be suspended, and battle lines will remain frozen until conditions are met for the complete staged withdrawal. 4. Within 72 hours of Israel publicly accepting this agreement, all hostages, alive and deceased, will be returned. 5. Once all hostages are released, Israel will release 250 life sentence prisoners plus 1700 Gazans who were detained after October 7th 2023, including all women and children detained in that context. For every Israeli hostage whose remains are released, Israel will release the remains of 15 deceased Gazans. 6. Once all hostages are returned, Hamas members who commit to peaceful co-existence and to decommission their weapons will be given amnesty. Members of Hamas who wish to leave Gaza will be provided safe passage to receiving countries. 7. Upon acceptance of this agreement, full aid will be immediately sent into the Gaza Strip. At a minimum, aid quantities will be consistent with what was included in the January 19, 2025, agreement regarding humanitarian aid, including rehabilitation of infrastructure (water, electricity, sewage), rehabilitation of hospitals and bakeries, and entry of necessary equipment to remove rubble and open roads. 8. Entry of distribution and aid in the Gaza Strip will proceed without interference from the two parties through the United Nations and its agencies, and the Red Crescent, in addition to other international institutions not associated in any manner with either party. Opening the Rafah crossing in both directions will be subject to the same mechanism implemented under the January 19, 2025 agreement. 9. Gaza will be governed under the temporary transitional governance of a technocratic, apolitical Palestinian committee, responsible for delivering the day-to-day running of public services and municipalities for the people in Gaza. This committee will be made up of qualified Palestinians and international experts, with oversight and supervision by a new international transitional body, the “Board of Peace,” which will be headed and chaired by President Donald J. Trump, with other members and heads of State to be announced, including Former Prime Minister Tony Blair. This body will set the framework and handle the funding for the redevelopment of Gaza until such time as the Palestinian Authority has completed its reform program, as outlined in various proposals, including President Trump’s peace plan in 2020 and the Saudi-French proposal, and can securely and effectively take back control of Gaza. This body will call on best international standards to create modern and efficient governance that serves the people of Gaza and is conducive to attracting investment. 10. A Trump economic development plan to rebuild and energize Gaza will be created by convening a panel of experts who have helped birth some of the thriving modern miracle cities in the Middle East. Many thoughtful investment proposals and exciting development ideas have been crafted by well-meaning international groups, and will be considered to synthesize the security and governance frameworks to attract and facilitate these investments that will create jobs, opportunity, and hope for future Gaza. 11. A special economic zone will be established with preferred tariff and access rates to be negotiated with participating countries. 12. No one will be forced to leave Gaza, and those who wish to leave will be free to do so and free to return. We will encourage people to stay and offer them the opportunity to build a better Gaza. 13. Hamas and other factions agree to not have any role in the governance of Gaza, directly, indirectly, or in any form. All military, terror, and offensive infrastructure, including tunnels and weapon production facilities, will be destroyed and not rebuilt. There will be a process of demilitarization of Gaza under the supervision of independent monitors, which will include placing weapons permanently beyond use through an agreed process of decommissioning, and supported by an internationally funded buy back and reintegration program all verified by the independent monitors. New Gaza will be fully committed to building a prosperous economy and to peaceful coexistence with their neighbors. 14. A guarantee will be provided by regional partners to ensure that Hamas, and the factions, comply with their obligations and that New Gaza poses no threat to its neighbors or its people. 15. The United States will work with Arab and international partners to develop a temporary International Stabilization Force (ISF) to immediately deploy in Gaza. The ISF will train and provide support to vetted Palestinian police forces in Gaza, and will consult with Jordan and Egypt who have extensive experience in this field. This force will be the long-term internal security solution. The ISF will work with Israel and Egypt to help secure border areas, along with newly trained Palestinian police forces. It is critical to prevent munitions from entering Gaza and to facilitate the rapid and secure flow of goods to rebuild and revitalize Gaza. A deconfliction mechanism will be agreed upon by the parties. 16. Israel will not occupy or annex Gaza. As the ISF establishes control and stability, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) will withdraw based on standards, milestones, and timeframes linked to demilitarization that will be agreed upon between the IDF, ISF, the guarantors, and the Unites States, with the objective of a secure Gaza that no longer poses a threat to Israel, Egypt, or its citizens. Practically, the IDF will progressively hand over the Gaza territory it occupies to the ISF according to an agreement they will make with the transitional authority until they are withdrawn completely from Gaza, save for a security perimeter presence that will remain until Gaza is properly secure from any resurgent terror threat. 17. In the event Hamas delays or rejects this proposal, the above, including the scaled-up aid operation, will proceed in the terror-free areas handed over from the IDF to the ISF. 18. An interfaith dialogue process will be established based on the values of tolerance and peaceful co-existence to try and change mindsets and narratives of Palestinians and Israelis by emphasizing the benefits that can be derived from peace. 19. While Gaza re-development advances and when the PA reform program is faithfully carried out, the conditions may finally be in place for a credible pathway to Palestinian self-determination and statehood, which we recognize as the aspiration of the Palestinian people. 20. The United States will establish a dialogue between Israel and the Palestinians to agree on a political horizon for peaceful and prosperous co-existence.
