Speaker 0: Announced Thursday seemed like just another typical day in Old Town. People milling about and businesses running as usual, except this Checkers. And we ran into some would be customers who were hoping to grab a quick meal, and actually, we were the ones who told them why this is close. Speaker 1: Wanted to get like a two for seven, and then I find out craziness happened. Speaker 2: So I noticed the crime scene tape, but until you came in, I had absolutely no idea. Speaker 1: Did they die? Speaker 0: Yeah. Yeah. Customer died. Speaker 1: Yes. That's wild. Speaker 0: 23 year old Elijah Mackie out of his work uniform Thursday and getting escorted into a deputy's cruiser charged with the murder of Wesley Robertson. The Osceola County Sheriff's Office says it was about 10:00 Wednesday night when Mackie and Robertson exchanged words over Robertson's food order. Mackie was working at the time. The argument grew more heated. Speaker 1: From a verbal dispute to a shooting. Yeah. That's from zero to a hundred really quick. That's a quick escalation. Speaker 3: They got Old Town roped off. Nobody comes. Nobody goes. Speaker 0: Michael Beecraft was leaving Old Town around that time and whipped out his phone when he sensed something was going down. So we thought something bad happened. Speaker 3: We knew something bad happened. Yellow tape, Checkers. I kinda suspected somebody probably got shot, and that's exactly what happened. Speaker 2: It's heartbreaking. It's scary if somebody is willing to go to those lengths over food. Speaker 0: Amanda Barajas works at the bar right behind Checkers. Speaker 2: Unless you're, like, security or a police officer, I don't think there's any reason to have, a weapon at work. Speaker 0: As of this broadcast, Checkers has not responded to our specific questions about any policies related to weapons in the workplace. But a spokesperson did issue a statement saying they're shocked and saddened by the incident and that the actions of this one employee, quote, do not reflect the values of the thousands of our hardworking employees across the country. The spokesperson adding that Checkers is working closely with police in the investigation, and they're sending thoughts and prayers to the customer's Speaker 4: food order gone wrong in Kissimmee. A customer is dead after allegedly being shot by a Checkers worker. Fox thirty five's Kelsey Cairns is live at that Checkers tonight. So, Kelsey, police say this all started over a burger and fries. Yes. Good evening, Marleesa and Lou Ann. As you just mentioned, yes, this all started when a customer and employee got into an argument over a food order. Just to give you an idea of where we are, we're at this checkers here in Kissimmee, but take a look right next to me here. You see this hole in the wall? It's a large hole, and you can see this little evidence marker sticker. I spoke to a witness. This could be possibly where one of those bullets came flying into that store. You can see right here, we've got a closed sign on the order window because this entire area has been closed off for this entire day after that shooting happened last night. But if you take a look next to me here, we're here at the old town which is part of a fun spot. So this is a high traffic area. A lot of families in and out. Just tonight as we've been here, lots of people coming and going. So you can only imagine just how chaotic this scene may have been last night. 23 year old Elijah Mackie in handcuffs escorted by Osceola deputies into the back of a deputy patrol car. Investigators say he shot and killed 51 year old Wesley Robertson after an argument over his food order. Speaker 3: They got sheriffs. They got troopers. They got city. Something happened at Checkers. It's gotta be serious because there's yellow tape everywhere. Speaker 4: Witness Michael B. Craft and a friend were staying at a hotel nearby when they started hearing sirens. Investigators say the shooting happened Wednesday night just after 10:00. Speaker 3: We didn't hear no gunshots, but we heard a helicopter clearly. And so we kept you know, we started following the police. Speaker 4: On Thursday, the restaurant was closed with a sign on the order window and some caution tape blocking off the drive through. Speaker 3: It's getting crazy nowadays with the kids and the guns. If they're not calling 911, they're pulling out a gun. That's how it is now. Speaker 4: As it stands, Mackie is currently sitting inside an Osceola County jail cell facing a charge of premeditated murder. He has no bond. We have also reached out to the Osceola Sheriff's Office for a full report. Reporting live tonight in Osceola County, I'm Kelsey Karnes, Fox thirty five News.
