You remember the cherry tree fiction? A long time after you have forgotten the more earth shaking history making episodes in the life of George Washington. You have misplaced in your memory the details of Ben Franklin's statesmanship, but you remember his flying a kite. Joyce Kilmer was a great military hero. But the only thing you personally recall about him is his poetic tribute to trees.
Maybe of this current decade that which will be remembered best will not be its wars and its moon rockets, or its crumbling frontiers, or the giants who lived and died. Maybe all that'll survive to linger in the day by day vocabulary of generations reincarnation of Electric Automobiles. But, for any Eve of 4th July, I, Paul Harvey, do herewith bequeath unto you something to remember. You may not be able to quote one line from the Declaration of Independence at this moment. These were men of means, well educated, 24 were lawyers and jurists, 9 were farmers, owners of large plantations. On June 11, a committee sat down to draw up a declaration of independence. We were gonna tell the British fatherland, no more rule by redcoats. Below the dam of ruthless foreign rule, the stream of freedom was running shallow and muddy, and we were gonna light a fuse to dynamite that dam. This pact as Burke later put it, was a partnership between the living and the dead and the yet unborn.
There was no bigotry, there was no demagoguery in this group. All had shared hardships. Jefferson finished a draft of the document in 17 days. Congress adopted it in July and so much is familiar history, but now King George 3rd had denounced all rebels in America as traitors, punishment for treason was hanging. The names now so familiar to you from the several signatures on that declaration of independence, The names were kept secret for 6 months.
For each knew the full meaning of that magnificent last paragraph in which his signature pledged his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor. 56 men placed their names beneath that pledge. 56 men knew when they signed that they were risking everything. They knew if they won this fight the best they could expect would be years of hardship in a struggling nation. And if they lost they'd face a hangman's rope.
But they signed the pledge, and here is the documented fate of that gallant 56. Carter Braxton of Virginia, wealthy planter, trader saw his ships swept from the seas. To pay his debts he lost his home and all of his properties and died in rags. Thomas Lynch Junior who signed that pledge was a 3rd generation rice grower, aristocrat, large plantation owner. After he signed his health failed, his wife and he set out for France to regain his failing health.
Their ship never got to France, was never heard from again. Thomas McKean of Delaware was so harassed by the enemy that he was forced to move his family 5 times in 5 months. He served in Congress without pay. His family in poverty and in hiding. Vandals looted the properties of Ellery and Clymer and Hall and Gwinnett and Walton and Hayward and Rutledge and Middleton.
Thomas Nelson Junior of Virginia raised $2,000,000 on his own signature to provision our allies, the French fleet. After the war he personally paid back the loans, wiped out his entire estate, and he was never reimbursed by his government. In the final battle for Yorktown, he Nelson urged General Washington to fire on his Nelson's own home, which was occupied by Cornwallis. It was destroyed. Thomas Nelson Junior had pledged his life, his fortune, and his sacred honor.
The Hessians seized the home of Francis Hopkinson of New Jersey. Francis Lewis had his home and everything destroyed, his wife imprisoned, she died within a few months. Richard Stockton who signed that declaration was captured, mistreated, his health broken to the extent that he died at 51, his estate was pillaged. Thomas Hayward Jr. Was captured when Charleston fell.
John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside while she was dying. Their 13 children fled in all directions for their lives. His fields and gristmill were laid waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves and returned home after the war to find his wife dead, his children gone, his properties gone, and he died a few weeks later of exhaustion and a broken heart. Lewis Morris saw his land destroyed, his family scattered.
Philip Livingston died within a few months from the hardships of the war. John Hancock, history remembers best due to a quirk of fate rather than anything he stood for, that great sweeping signature attesting to his vanity, towers over the others. One of the wealthiest men in New England. And yet he stood outside Boston one terrible night of the war, and he said, burn Boston, though it makes John Hancock a beggar if the public good requires it. So he too lived up to the pledge.
Of the 56, few were long to survive. 5 were captured by the British and tortured before they died. 12 had their homes from Rhode Island to Charleston, sacked, looted, occupied by the enemy or burned. 2 lost their sons in the army. 1 had 2 sons captured.
9 of the 56 died in the war from its hardships or from its more merciful bullets. I don't know what impression you had had of the men who met that summer in Philadelphia. But I think it's important that we remember this about them. They were not poor men. They were not wild eyed pirates.
These were men of means. They were rich men, most of them, and had enjoyed much ease and luxury in their personal living. Not hungry men, certainly not terrorists, not irresponsible malcontents, not fanatical incendiaries. These men were prosperous men, wealthy landowners. They were substantially secure in their prosperity.
They had everything to lose. But they considered liberty, and this is as much as I shall say of it, they had learned that liberty is so much more important than security, that they pledge their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor. And they fulfilled their pledge. They paid the price, and freedom was born.

Speaker 0: I collected a lot of data. We collected millions of observations on, everyday use of force that wasn't lethal. We collected thousands of observations on lethal force. And and it it was in this moment in 2016 that I realized people lose their minds when they don't like the result. So what my paper showed, you'll see tomorrow, like some of you, was that, yes, we saw some bias in the low level uses of force everyday pushing up against cars and things like that.
People seem to like that result, but we didn't find any, racial bias in police shootings. Now that was really surprising to me because I expected to see it. The little known fact is I had 8 full time RAs that it took to do this over nearly a year. When I found the surprising result, I hired 8 fresh ones and redid it to make sure. They came up with the same exact answer and I thought it was robust.
And I went to go give it and my god, all hell broke loose. It was a 104 page dense academic economics paper with a 150 page appendix. Okay? It was posted for 4 minutes when I got my first email. This is full of shit.
Doesn't make any sense. And I wrote back, how'd you read it that fast? That's amazing. You are a genius. And I had colleagues take me into to the side and say, don't publish this.
You'll ruin your career. I said, what are you talking about? I said, what's wrong with it? Do you believe the first part? Yes.
Do you believe the second part? Well, it's the issue is they just don't fit together. We like the first one, but you should publish the the second one another time. I said, let me ask this. If the second part about the police shooting this is a literal conversation.
I said to them, if the second part, showed bias, do you think I would should publish it then? And they say, yeah. Then it would make sense. And I said, I guarantee you I'll publish it. We'll see what happens.
So it was it was you know, I I lived under under, police protection for about 30 or 40 days. I had a 7 day old daughter at the time. I remember going and shopping for because, you know, when you have a newborn, you think you have enough diapers, you don't. So I I was going to the grocery store to get diapers with the armed guard. It was crazy.

Speaker 2: You're about to hear the story of how a small town Amish farmer's world was turned upside down by the government of Virginia. Town hall spoke with that cattle farmer, Samuel Fisher, the owner of Golden Valley Farms. Since the state Raided his farm. Samuel has been criminally charged. His products, which feed about 500 customers and their families, were seized and hauled to the dump.
And his meat cells have been shut down. Samuel and his family are Amish farmers. Out of respect for his religious Tradition, we're adhering to his wishes to keep his face and family off camera as much as possible for this interview. This is Samuel's story in his own words. Can you just tell me more about Golden Valley Farms and its origin?
Speaker 1: We started about 5 years ago. We bought the herd of cows with the business, with the customer base, basically just selling milk. We started doing cream, yogurt, other stuff. People were asking for it. And then along with That we pretty soon started with meat.
When we put up this building, we were not planning on processing meat ourselves. We were doing it a little bit for our family, but we were not planning to do it for our customers. And then we decided we're gonna do some USDA inspected because I knew that is Technically, to a lot of people's minds is more legal. So I decided we're gonna send that to the USDA facilities, have it slaughtered, butchered there and bring it back, put it in the freezer and sell that. So now we had 2 options available.
We did sell some of the USDA meat, but it was slow. It was very obvious the customers do want the meat that is processed here on the form and no USDA inspection. And after the state was here, it was interesting. I told the office of miniature to do a survey from the customers If they want me to send our animals to USDA and have a USDA inspected or if they want me to process it here myself. The survey came back around 92% of the customers wanted me to process here on the form, set it right here off the floor.
Speaker 2: What are the costs to take it to, the nearest facility, and how far away would that be?
Speaker 1: That's around 2 hours of driving, and the cost to take it over there There's a lot. It depends if you can do a lot at one time. If you can do a trailer load at one time, say 4 cows and 5 pigs or something like that. Cost For all that, we'll probably be $500. But it's hard for us to ship so many animals at one time, process all this, bring the meat back, and have that in stock.
By the time the meat comes back, you might be running low on certain cuts of meat, but What you order from USDA was not accurate to that. You might run out of some stuff long before other stuff because you had to order it so far at advance. Plus then the pandemic came and then you had to schedule your animals around It's 8 to 12 months ahead of time. Well, that was super hard to predict so far ahead how much I actually need to process. At that time, Pandemic came.
Stores weren't open. Stores were running out of food. Customers were starting to buy heavily. All of a sudden, we had a lot of need for meat. Well, there was no option taking it to USDA facility.
So that's when the trigger pushed to do it ourselves. Customers were buying mostly from our own meat, not so much from the USDA. Then the pandemic came and there was no other option but either not have it available or process it ourselves. So we started processing ourselves. We, put addition to the building and made a processing room and, we certainly like it now.
Then the state came in and ask what we're doing. And I told them exactly what we're doing. We're selling meat to our customers And they said, no. There's no way around it. You can't do that.
They asked permission to get in here. I did not give them permission to come in here and they told me we'll be back and left. The next day they came with a search warrant, went through everything, house, every building in the barn. They just raid it through everything, put their nose and everything, and wanted to know every detail of everything. I went out back trying to find all the failure they can find on a farm, which of course some of their stuff, which they think is wrong.
It's just normal stuff on a fork. They were here for like 3, 4 hours. I wasn't on the form at the time and then they tag the meat so that we can't touch it, we can't sell it, we can't feed our family with it, We can't do anything with it. To me that was quite wrong that we can't feed our family with it or at least give it to people. I even made a special phone call, ask him again if that's the way it is.
He said, yes. Cannot feed your family with it. Cannot do anything with I decided this ain't right. We're gonna feed our family. We're gonna feed our customers.
We did not honor that tag. We sold the meat. We sold some meat out of there, whatever customers ordered, then the state came back and they saw what we did. Really gave me a mouthful for doing that, but they basically what they did was they took it to court. They took a lot of pictures or whatever they could here at the forum to find evidence that we're slaughtering and selling raw meat and took it to court in order to seize the Prado and put it in the dump.
Later that day, they came out here with the U Haul truck, back the radio through to the door, and took 2 men 4 hours to get it out. And they just loaded it up a U Haul truck and took it out to a dump and dumped everything out. They got all the meat except pet food and wild game packs of ground turkey. Everything else they took. When after the warrant, they had a tag that we can't do anything.
We can't take any meat out. We can't feed our family. We can't give it away. Can't feed it to adults. We can't do anything with it.
Speaker 2: How does that make you feel if you can't even feed your own family with your own meat?
Speaker 1: If we're allowed to do it or not, we definitely will. Anybody can go and raise animals for their own family to eat. That's where I got to the point. He crossed the lines, so I'm gonna cross the lines. He crossed the lines by telling me I cannot feed my own family with this meat.
