Speaker 0: In your career. What what keeps you coming back? What keeps you out there winning? Well, Speaker 1: I'm not quite sure. To be honest with you, I, This year, I I think it was it was in, you know, the USA. Say, yeah. I want to support US fencing. Speaker 0: Yeah. Speaker 1: I really do. Otherwise, I was actually thinking of I called stepping away. But the fact that was in America, I Thought that was important to support USAID. Speaker 0: Yeah. The best Speaker 1: I could. This is my way of saying thanks to USAID. Speaker 0: And we say thanks to you. I mean, 8 8 world championships. You've heard the the national anthem now 8 times. Not to mention the team wins, and we're hoping for another tomorrow. Does it is it just a special every time when you get that goal? Speaker 1: You can you can see that you're Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. It's always special. Speaker 0: Never gets old. And how about the the community? One thing I I love about what I've seen at this event is it's not just USA supporting USA. There's, you know, your your fellow fencers from other countries are out there cheering you on and cheering on others from other countries. Speaker 1: Yeah. Speaker 0: What does that say to you about just the spirit of fencing? Speaker 1: Well, I I think, especially in the veteran levels, I think it speaks to, a mature community and values, 4 each Speaker 0: other. Speaker 1: Obviously, you know, you made friends, so you're closer with some and others, but Overall, my mom believed that we're all cheering for each other, Speaker 0: and we have the other. Yeah. Speaker 1: Maybe if we don't do so well, not so happy, but nonetheless, I mean, some of these women, many of these women, I should say, Have been around much longer than I have. Mhmm. For example, the woman I Speaker 0: meet today Yeah. From Finland. Speaker 1: She, Has been doing this probably over 20 years. Speaker 0: Yeah. Speaker 1: And think of, the woman, Miss Divine, Last year. Speaker 0: Yep. Speaker 1: She was in her eighties. So there's some magic And that's it. Yeah. It could all happen. Speaker 0: And then finally, Liz, what about tomorrow? By virtue of your finish today, you're gonna be on the the team Yeah. I'm really happy to meet up. Speaker 1: Well, teams are are kind of fun. Yeah. Because in the end, the pressure is off, you end up to do individually well. And, so it's kinda like, you know and and Toto Mine Speaker 0: will also We'll be in the 50s. Speaker 1: We've had the teams a lot, so it will be kind of like, this is just like in the 60s. In the semifinals, Elizabeth Kocab executed a lightning strike to score a crucial touch against Hoffman, which changed the game in her favor. Kocab revealed that she planned this move based on a previous encounter with Hoffman in 2018. Summer Arroyo, a double medalist in foil and saber, also deserves recognition. Kocab, with her significant reach advantage, dominated the match against Arroyo, who had to take risks to catch up. Kocab maintained her lead and secured the victory. Despite a late comeback from Arroyo, Kocab emerged as the champion, adding another title to her impressive record. This win marks the United States' 12th gold medal.

Speaker 0: Was in the previous bet that we saw in this in the semis against Hoffman of Hungary. If you remember, the score was 44, I believe, and out of nowhere, Kochb, who hadn't even fainted once to the hand, did a lightning strike to the hand to score 5 4. The minute that happened, the bio changed completely, And Hoffman now had to attack, which was right in what Kocab wanted, and she immediately scored on a post to make it 64. And for all intents and purposes, that bout was over. So I was speaking to Kochab, but just after that and before this bout, and I said, that was an amazing touch. Did you plan it? And she goes, I did. And she goes, the reason I did is because I fenced Hoffman once before in 2018, 5 years ago. And in the sim similar situation, I hit her on the exact same touch. This is outside. And that's the makings of a champion. You can have a memory like that and you can execute a plan like that and a tactic like that, and that's why Elizabeth Kocab is here right now. Here we are. And a nice little victory celebration by Summer Royal with a quick early touch. Congratulations to Summer Arroyo whether she wins or not. She's a double medalist in 2 different disciplines, foil and saber. Pretty impressive, but not as impressive as Julie Seel of the United States who won The gold medal in the fifties in both saber and foil, something she said to me during weapons control the day before the competition that she was planning to do, and she did it. K. So On guard. Khokab with a Red. Significant reach. You see her feet together there at the on guard line? The minute the referee says fenced, she just goes into an en garde. The fencer is supposed to beat the en garde line shoulder length apart, and that that's an advantage for It's not like she needs more of an advantage because she's got a significant reach and length advantage here. And it's not it the it's not her problem to do that. Every fencer should try to do that and take advantage of that. It's up to the referee to make sure that they don't. Almost too easy there with that little reach advantage. It's Okay. Ready. See the feet together there? Watch. Ready. Fenced. And she's already a meter into a meter closer to her opponent. Alright. I'm done with that one. So now, Khokab, you see what what happened here? She's got a lead. And with her With her enormous reach advantage, she she scored again there on the repose. There there's no reason to push. So there are certain times when you when the fencer gets even that one touch advantage, it's it's a considerably bigger advantage in just one touch. And here is an example of that because now Summer Roy has no option but to take some risks and push, when she does, she's going up against a much taller and longer fencer in Kochap. 1 minute pause. Okay. So Mission accomplished for COCAB there, came out of the 1st period with a two touch lead. And after that initial out of nowhere, didn't see it coming, little shot to the wrist, Khokab certainly wasn't prepared for it By summer, we're very early. That's the last touch she's been able to score, and she's gonna have to open it up a little bit. Doesn't have to throw caution to the wind, but it's gonna have to work very hard to, you know, try to get the next touch, and She's gonna have to work very hard at it by pushing COCAB because I don't see COCAB pushing her. No need to. The only reason Kochap should push Sameroye if it's in second intention and from a distance where she's really not trying to hit and she's close enough where Sameroye can't hit her. Following this at 1:45 will be the sixties category semifinal, And it's gonna be going on at the exact same time as the fifties. So both of them will be at the same time. Watch a bat that we're that we're not commentating on, you can still watch it. Okay. As advertised, Summer Roy on on the march Kochb very comfortable back there. Doesn't feel like she's really at risk of being hit. Push. And just pops some moroya on the wrist. As Elizabeth Kokab inches towards defending her title in the seventies and potentially winning for 8th veterans championship. And that was a beauty. Khokab Sura with a half hearted attack that was parried and reposted. Well, that wasn't half hearted. She saw an opening opens it up from 5 to 2. Push back. On that k. So Maroia, five three. Where we started? So 1 minute's gone and we and she still has the same 2 touch deficit. Make that 3. You could just see Khokab sees the opening. It just does it's not even at full speed, just to lunge right to the shoulder, and she's getting closer. Push. And another. Bushcraft. Elizabeth Kokab is now one touch away. Go back. Right? Not yet. That was the other way around. Sorry. And another. It's 58. Touch. Referee's allowing it. It was before any halt. Hungar. Touch. Now Kochab is one away. Little boxing inside there, and that was to Summer Roy's advantage there because Kokel with the longer limbs wasn't able to get untangled there. One more. If Someroy is able to get one more touch here, this becomes very interesting. And She did it. It's 89. Now the pressure has changed, and there's a lot of pressure on Kocab here because that's 3 in a row. And there it is, Elizabeth Kokab of the United States wins the women's FA seventies Veterans World Championship. She's now won once in the fifties, 5 times in the fifties, twice in the seventies, and you have to believe there's more to come. Congratulations to her. Thank you. And by the way, that's the United States' 12th gold medal in
