Maine's education commissioner is allegedly encouraging schools to disregard President Trump's executive order regarding men in women's sports, advising them to adhere to the Maine Human Rights Act and local nondiscrimination policies. According to State Representative Laura Libby, the commissioner previously de-prioritized academic learning in favor of social emotional learning and DEI. Libby claims these policies reflect a "woke agenda" misaligned with Mainers' priorities, resulting in the lowest test scores in 30 years. She says parents are displeased that their children's education is being replaced with an agenda. Trump has threatened to withdraw significant funding from Maine, which Libby says would dramatically affect the state, especially since the education budget has already increased by 65% in the last six years.

Speaker 0: Maine's top education official suggesting her schools can defy president Trump's executive order to keep men out of women's sports. In an email that was provided exclusively to Fox News Digital, the state's education commissioner told her schools to, quote, adhere to the Maine Human Rights Act and your local school board policies related to nondiscrimination. Neither our state law nor your local policies are diminished by Trump's executive orders. Maine's state representative, Laura Libby, was silenced. Remember, she was censured for protecting girls, and she joins us now. Good morning to you, representative. Speaker 1: Good morning. Thanks for Speaker 0: having me. Well, thank you for coming on. So we've seen you you were you were silenced. The Democrats did not agree with you. Maine's governor was having that feud with Donald Trump because he said biological men should not be in women's sports, and he threatened to cut off funding. And now we have this, the lady who runs the Department of Education saying to ignore Donald Trump's policies. And I know you're not shocked, are you? Speaker 1: I'm not surprised at all. This is the same commissioner, commissioner Macon, who said back in 2023 in response to students falling test scores in Maine, look. We're not gonna prioritize academic learning. We're going to emphasize social emotional learning and DEI. So this shocks me not at all. Speaker 0: You said that she has said in the past that we that academics will take a back seat to all of these other policies. What are her policies? Speaker 1: Well, her policies are the same as the Mills administration. It's a woke agenda with which most Mainers don't agree. They don't agree that biological males should be participating in girls sports. They don't agree that the focus should be on DEI and social emotional learning. Folks want their kids to be learning the basics, and anything less is a disservice to Maine students as we see in their falling test scores. Speaker 0: Yeah. What are the test scores like in Maine for reading and math? Speaker 1: We we've got the lowest test scores in thirty years under this administration. It's really shocking. And at the same time, of course, we're facing the loss of millions of dollars if they continue to advance this woke agenda in defiance of federal law and biological reality. Speaker 0: Mhmm. Mhmm. What are the parents? What are your what are the constituents in your area? What do they say to you? Speaker 1: I think some folks are newly aware since February, since all of this, made news that this is such a strong focus of this administration, and they are not pleased. You know, they're sending their kids to school with the understanding that they will be learning, learning the basics, and instead, they're, having an agenda shoved down their throats rather than learning how to learn and learning math, learning reading, and, all the things that they need to succeed in life. Speaker 0: Donald Trump has threatened, as you and I have talked about in this interview, to take away a lot of money from your state. How would that affect your state, and what would that do for the children? Speaker 1: It would affect our state dramatically. You know, Maine students cannot afford, this politicization of education. We are a small state, and, our budget of $11,600,000,000 may sound small to folks, but that's a 65% increase over the last six years under governor Mills. And we can't afford to lose any funding, or that's gonna come again on the backs of Maine taxpayers. Speaker 0: Right. And these lawmakers don't understand that or don't care about that. Donald Trump says I'm gonna take away money from the schools, and they still wanna stick to their woke policies. Laurel, thank you so much for coming on with us. Speaker 1: Thank you.

“We've found uncapped needles all around the restaurant, and it's uncomfortable for the customers coming in. Last night, police were doing CPR on someone out front that overdosed and passed away. So It's a tough environment to run a successful business in."

One year ago today I made this post on Facebook. TODAY I have a hearing in Federal District Court because I have been silenced, and my constituents disenfranchised, for exercising my First Amendment right to Free Speech. https://t.co/TQ4qbS2nYi

Tonight I was on @FoxBusiness to talk about HHS' Civil Rights Office determination that Maine violates Title IX by allowing biological males to participate in girls' sports. https://t.co/SBuMhmu157

Video Transcript AI Summary
Maine Governor Janet Mills is facing scrutiny after the Department of Health and Human Services' civil rights division found the state in violation of Title IX for allowing biological men to compete in women's sports. The Department of Education, the Maine Principal's Association, and Greeley High School were specifically highlighted. Republican Maine State Representative Laurel Libby was censored for identifying a male athlete who won a girls' pole vault competition. Libby claims that the Democrat majority and Governor Mills are doubling down on this policy, despite most Mainers disagreeing with biological males participating in girls' sports. She suggests the governor will likely use taxpayer money to fight the Trump administration rather than protect Maine girls' rights and Title IX compliance, anticipating a court battle. Libby believes everyday Mainers find the Democrats' stance unpopular and unfair to girls, citing the support she's received since her censure. The loss of federal funding will affect everyone in educational institutions.

Speaker 0: Maine governor Janet Mills might be regretting taking on president Trump. Turns out the state cannot simply shirk its obligations under federal law. The civil rights division at the Department of Health and Human Services says that state is violating title nine, meaning engaging in discrimination by allowing biological men to compete against women in sports. Three entities have been highlighted, the Department of Education, the Maine Principal's Association, and Greeley High School. Republican Maine state representative Laurel Libby was recently censored for a post identifying a man who competed in and won a girl state pole vault competition at Greeley High. Speaker 1: Absolutely unbelievable, and Laurel Libby joins us now. Thank you for being with us, and thank you for just speaking the truth about all of this. I was just at the California State Republican Convention. The main speaker was Riley Gaines, and what she said really struck accordingly, which is in this election and in this whole conversation, people are rejecting absurdity. But it sounds like in your state, the Democrats are still for absurdity. Speaker 2: Yeah. The Democrat majority and, of course, our governor Janet Mills are doubling down on this absurdity. Really sticking to this policy, Mainers by and large don't agree with. They don't agree with biological males participating in girls sports. They certainly don't agree with doubling down on a policy that's going to mean not only do we not have a fair, safe, and level playing field for Maine girls, but we're going to lose our federal funding. We've got an incredible amount at stake here. Speaker 0: What is what is going to be the response from the governor, the governor's office representative after this finding from the office of civil rights at HHS? Speaker 2: Unfortunately, from everything that we've seen so far, I think that her stance is probably going to be to spend taxpayer dollars in order to fight president Trump and the administration on this rather than simply protecting Maine girls, ensuring that their rights are intact, and that we're following title nine. They keep to keep digging in further every step along the way. So I think we're gonna see this go to the courts. Speaker 1: And do you have any sense of the, you know, just normal people's reaction that the the the Democrats leading the state are taking these positions? Speaker 2: While the Democrats leading the state, the Democrat majority in the house and the senate and the governor may be taking this unpopular stance, that's not where Mainers are by and large. Everyday Mainers have common sense, and they understand and believe that biological males shouldn't be participating in girls sports. It's simply not fair to our girls to allow this to continue. And so the outpouring of support that I've been hearing since my censure says that Mainers don't support governor Mills and the Democrat majority in their stance on this. Speaker 0: And everyone's gonna suffer. Everyone. Not just the girls, but all but anyone in a educational institution because the money will go away. It will be pulled. Representative Laurel Libbey, great to see you. Thank you so much for being here. Thank you again. Please come back.

I believe the voices of our girls should be heard and their rights respected. They deserve better leadership than what is currently being offered in Maine. I'm also grateful for President Trump's commitment to ensuring sanity prevails both in our state and across the nation.

The voices of our girls must be heard. The rights of our girls must be respected. Maine girls deserve so much better than the "leadership" that @GovJanetMills and the Maine Democrat Majority are currently offering.

@laurel_libby - Rep. Laurel Libby

I'm thankful that President Trump and the Trump Administration are committed to stepping in and ensuring sanity prevails, both in Maine and nationwide 🇺🇸

I likely wouldn't have started posting on X just two weeks ago if @GovJanetMills and the Maine Democrat Majority had done the right thing by protecting our girls and keeping biological males out of girls' sports. They didn't, and now our movement has grown beyond the Governor. I am incredibly grateful for your support and will never apologize for speaking the truth. I will continue to fight to ensure that the voices of Maine girls are heard and their rights are respected.

I probably wouldn’t have started posting on X just 2 weeks ago, if @GovJanetMills and the Maine Democrat Majority did the right thing, protected our girls, and kept biological males out of girls' sports. But, they didn't... Now, our movement is bigger than the Governor 🇺🇸 https://t.co/FetAKZ4OAu

I see that Maine girls are gaining national support and are speaking out against biological males in girls' sports, which seems to have concerned Governor Janet Mills and the Democrat Majority. I want to thank Julia for her bravery in voicing her opinion. It's important to me that the voices of our girls are heard and their rights respected. I appreciate President Trump's commitment to restoring sanity in Maine and addressing the issues where the Democrat Majority has fallen short.

@laurel_libby - Rep. Laurel Libby

🚨 This is *exactly* what @GovJanetMills and Maine's Democrat Majority were afraid of: Maine girls are seeing the *national support* that they are receiving and are choosing to speak out against biological males in girls' sports. https://t.co/d8yHWqpBaE

My name is Julia Dietrich, and I'm here to support a team unfairly denied their rightful place in competition due to a policy that compromises the integrity of women's sports. Female athletes in Maine must unite against the Maine Principles Association and the governor's policies that fail us. Despite our training, sacrifices, and adherence to the rules, our rights and opportunities are being taken away. If those in power won't protect fairness, we must make them understand the consequences through public pressure. I've experienced an anti-woman culture in Maine, even within MPA-governed debate competitions, with judges making inappropriate comments about my voice and views. This fight is for every girl in Maine who deserves a fair shot. Empty scoreboards will send a clear message to the MPA, our schools, and the state that we will not be ignored. We are fighters, and we must keep women's sports for women.

Speaker 0: Hello. My name is Julia Dietrich. I'm from Bristol, Maine. I'm a junior at another Midcoast High School. And even though I'm not a student at Freeport High School, I would like to show my support for a team that rightfully earned its place in competition, only to have that opportunity taken away by an unfair policy that ignores the integrity of women's sports. Enough is enough. It is time for female athletes across Maine to take a stand against the Maine Principles Association and the governor's policies that are failing us. We have trained, we have sacrificed, we have played by the rules, yet we are being forced to watch as the rights and opportunities of female athletes are stripped away. If those in power refuse to protect fairness in women's sports, then we must make them understand the consequences of their decisions in the only way they seem to understand, through time, resources, money, and undeniable public pressure. For the past three years, I have competed in congressional debate, which is another organization governed by the MPA. Even in debate, there's a culture in the state of Maine that is anti woman and our own state judges making comments such as, your voice is too feminine. You would never be taken seriously if you continue to hold yourself that way. Your views are unreasonable. The fight is not just about one team, one championship, or one season. This is about every girl in the state of Maine who has ever laced up her shoes, stepped onto the field, prepared for a tournament, or poured her heart into a competition believing that she had a fair shot. It is time to act. Empty scoreboards and unanswered whistles send a message loud enough to the MPA that they can that to the MPA, our schools, and the state that that they cannot ignore it. I believe that the board should take a public stand against the MPA and the governor's position. We are not just athletes. We are not just students. We are not just parents. We are fighters. Let's keep women's sports for women. Thank you.

@laurel_libby - Rep. Laurel Libby

Thank you, Julia, for your bravery and making your voice heard!

@laurel_libby - Rep. Laurel Libby

The voices of our girls WILL be heard. The rights of our girls WILL be respected. President Trump is committed to restoring sanity in Maine, and stepping in where the Maine Democrat Majority has so *clearly failed* — and for that, we are thankful 🇺🇸

Maine's Democrat Leadership has asked me to take down my posts exposing their failure to keep biological males out of girls' sports. My answer is simple: I will not. I will do everything in my power to ensure our girls' voices are heard and their rights are respected. https://t.co/bO5mRKWxfd

I felt I had to share after seeing the picture of two girls tying for second place, who would have won if not for a biological male competing in their category. It's just not fair to our girls. I've heard from people on both sides, some thanking me for speaking up, others unhappy about my post. I was even asked by Democrat leadership in the house to take the post down, but I haven't. This is public information, and our girls deserve a fair and level playing field. We'll have legislation coming up this session to discuss boys playing in girls' sports here in Maine, so there will be plenty of opportunity for folks to make their voices heard.

Speaker 0: I I heard this from a friend who is impacted and, and immediately felt, you know, I have to post this and share because it's not fair. These girls, you know, you look at the picture, and there's a boy on the podium in first place. And there's two girls who tied for second place that would have won if not for a biological male jumping in their category. That's just not fair for main girls. Speaker 1: Have you paid any sort of price politically in terms of people reacting negatively at the very least, as a result of speaking out on these issues? Speaker 0: Yeah. I've heard from Maine folks on both sides of the issue. I've heard folks, you know, saying thank you so much for speaking up. Our girls deserve to have a fair and level playing field. I've also heard from folks who are unhappy about, my post. This is a public event that this individual has chosen to take part in, and, the results are public. And this is public information. And so I I've heard from folks on both sides of the aisle. I've been asked by Democrat leadership in the house to take the post down. And as you can see, I have not done that. Our girls deserve folks standing up and advocating for a fair and level playing field. And we'll have legislation coming up this session in the state house to, discuss this topic of if boys should be allowed to play in girls sports here in Maine. And so there's going to be plenty of opportunity for folks to to stand up and make their voices heard.
