Didn't expect this response in viewership. My pov is one of total contempt for Cold War dollar "jihadis." This is one reason to respect Hamas. They keep the takfiri terrorists (namely Al Qaeda and Daesh) out, which would be a nightmare.

When Israel helped elevate Hamas and PIJ over Fatah, part of the calculation was to create delegitimation, and an easier military pretext for future Nabka. Another part was to mortally divide Palestinian politics. The efficacy of Israeli intrigue, however, is usually overstated.

Hamas = the one outlet for Palestinian resistance barring mass rallies and strikes which have not differentiated themselves politically & are unlikely to do so since demoralizing crushing of intifadas, except thru outside inspirers and allies — eg a socialist Egypt. Hypothetical.

What Israel did not foresee in Hamas is how its communal stature in Palestinian civic life, when combined with a revolutionary cause and do or die fervor of masses in their ultimate, self conscious destiny, could rip up the script.

I am a Marxist. Hamas is not leftwing. It's a petit bourgeois national liberation trend. I actually wouldn't call it any-wing, and not out of a concession to Third Way ideology but for the extremely unique and enigmatic story of Hamas.

For example, Islamic Jihad (not Hamas, but a sibling of sorts in soldiering and the politics of soldiering) in Palestine aligns with Iran, Syria, Hezbollah, IRGC! Egyptian Islamic Jihad... merged with AL QAEDA!

Anyways, islamism was always going to be a current in palestinian militancy in a post-Peshawar world. Hamas, however, as the hegemonic Islamist camp, also is the dam against fascist islamism, the kind Gulf states promote. This is why Saudi-Israel normalization = so scary 4 us.

Hamas is not the camp of Palestinian liberation, but an important player in it. Unfortunately, this camp has been dismantled by Israel and Arafat and Abbas, so it's more of a playerless ghost town excepting the hearts and aspirations of the masses.

Due to this pole position in the resistance, Hamas is bound within certain limits to popular will. This can be seen by its talibanization creep (2007) and detalibanization (2010s esp after Syrian conflict). Hamas is the rarefied, mysterious actual "moderate rebels." 🤣

But Hamas is cut from a different cloth, not just from ISIS and Al Qaeda, but Taliban, Erdogan, and Morsi too. The PMF in Iraq, Houthis, and Hezbollah are the comparison, and all three are capable of transcending the sectarian gridlock in natlib conjectures of struggle.
