So he started out and he said, hey, black in the house tonight. There was claps and tears. And he said, if you're black in here tonight and you're proud, I want you to put your fist in the air and yell black power.
And all the black people in attendance with unison and with pride, they put their fists in the air and they yell, black power. And then he said, Latinos. Any Latinos in the house?

Speaker 10: I think there's a resurgence of antisemitism Because at this point in time, Europe has not yet learned how to be multicultural. And I think we're gonna be part of the throes of that Of that transformation, which must take place. Europe is not going to be the monolithic, societies. They once were The last century. Jews are going to be at the center of that.

Speaker 0: The German army suffered terribly during the First World War, and the German nation also suffered terribly, especially after the war. The crippling sanctions enacted by the victors with the Treaty of Versailles threw the country into serious depression. There was chaos on the streets and anarchy in the air. Communists seized many cities, including Berlin. While the great wealth of the nation was bled away by outrageous war reparations or sucked out by unscrupulous politicians, the average German was impoverished.
Inflation and unemployment soon followed and quickly destroyed all hope, all confidence, all morality. German cities were awash in pornography and prostitution, with even starving children being bought and sold like sex toys. Crime was rampant. Drunkenness and drug addiction were widespread. Suicide rates soared.
The situation seemed hopeless, and then things changed dramatically. Soon after the National Socialists were elected, the German economy sprang to life. Unemployment was erased. Building boomed. Great projects began.
Confidence burst to life anew. After years of hunger, hardship, shame, and degradation, Germany became a happy, hopeful nation again. Germany's transformation from squalor and misery to a world superpower was so incredible that the 1938 Time Magazine named Adolf Hitler man of the year. To many, it seemed as if a new cultural, economic, and political renaissance for all of Europe was at hand. But others throughout the world, envious, powerful, but above all fearful, now work tonight and day to take Germany down.
The 2nd World War was the most deadly and destructive war in history. For 6 long years, the unequal struggle pitting Germany against the world continued, with first one side, then the other on top. But at last, overwhelmed, Germany was once more defeated. This time, however, the right was to be punished not with mere reparations, nor loss of land, nor with simple decadence and despair. No.
On this occasion, Germany was to be subjected to pure hatred, hatred of the most vicious, evil, and depraved kind imaginable. Millions upon millions of Germans, many of whom had nothing to do with the war, were systematically raped, tortured, slaughtered, and all in the most sadistic and sickening ways imaginable. What happened to Germany and its people during and after World War 2 has remained the darkest and best kept secret in world history until now. This film is based upon the book by author and historian Thomas Goodrich. Over the past 30 years, Goodrich has written about a number of controversial subjects.

The crimes detailed herein were so vicious, so massive, and so evil that there are no words in the English language to accurately describe them. These are crimes that have been buried by the victors under a mountain of propaganda and lies for now over 70 years. This film is dedicated not only to the voiceless victims of the world's worst war, but also to future generations.

Speaker 0: During World War 2, Germany was subjected to an unrelenting assault from the sky. The Americans and British called it carpet bombing, saturation bombing, or unrestricted bombing. However, the German women and children who suffered through this nightmare called it by a simpler, more accurate name, terror bombing. The terror campaign was no accident. It was the secret plan of British prime minister Winston Churchill and air chief marshal Arthur Harris to unleash the full power of the Royal Air Force against German civilians, to inflict as much damage, to destroy as many homes, and to kill as many men, women, and children as possible.
Speaker 2: German cities will be subjected to to an ordeal, the life of which has never been experienced. My country continuity, severity, or magnitude. To achieve this end, there are no less of violence to which we will not know.
Speaker 0: Churchill's violence was on full display during the night of July 24, 1943. To the residents of Hamburg, a city of over 1,000,000 souls, the raid seemed initially like a standard bombing run. But soon, hundreds of enemy aircraft began raining down tons upon tons of high explosives on the very heart of Hamburg. Schools, churches, hospitals, homes, ancient art and architecture, all were blown to bits. The onslaught increased in fury with each succeeding wave of bombers, building minute by minute into a fiery, devastating crescendo.
And then the planes suddenly disappeared. The skies were clear again, and all above was silent. When the stunned survivors reemerge from their sellers later that night, they saw that their once beautiful city was now a smoldering ruin. The following day as firefighters from throughout Northern Germany battled the blaze, allied bombers suddenly appeared over Hamburg again. As planned, the Americans surprised not only the emergency workers, but columns of fleeing refugees as well.
1,000 perished. The next night, RAF bombers returned. In addition to the normal payload of high explosives, the British sent down tons of phosphorus bombs to accelerate the fires. The resulting conflagration ignited a firestorm. Hurricane force winds created by the intense heat up rooted trees, ripped roofs from buildings, and sucked screaming victims into the raging inferno.
Some who escaped the 150 mile per hour winds in the streets became mired in melting asphalt and quickly burst into flames. Those who had thrown themselves into the city's canals died of thermal radiation. Then as they floated on the water's surface, they too ignited. In the center of the firestorm, temperatures reached 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. When the great mass of flames joined, they rose into a column 3 miles high.
The attacks against Hamburg continued unabated for another week. Soon, there was nothing left to destroy. Appropriately dubbed by the allies as Operation Gamora, the raids had been a cold and calculated attempt to total destruction, the 750,000 homeless with an estimated 60 to 100000 dead, mostly women and children, Hamburg, for all intents and purposes, had ceased to exist. It was now clear to all that the allied air war against Germany had become a war of massacre and terror. The pattern was repeated time and again across Germany.
Hamburg, Berlin, Nuremberg, Darmstadt, Cologne, Stuttgart, Wurzburg, Munich. All German cities suffered the same. After first blasting a town to splinters, the allied bombers quickly returned in the hope of catching survivors and rescuers in the open and igniting with firebombs all that remained. When the roaring bombers released their lethal cargo, a veritable rain of fire descended upon a targeted town. The thousands of small fires would join together to form 1 huge blaze, creating an intense vortex of wind and flames.
Speaker 3: I struggled to run against the wind in the middle of the street. We couldn't go on across because the asphalt had melted. There were people on the roadway, some already dead, some still lying alive but stuck in the asphalt.

Speaker 0: Some miraculously survived the inferno, reaching safety in rivers, canals, and parks. 1000 more, however, did not. When the raids finally ended and the fire storms began to recede, rescue workers rushed to free those still trapped underground. When would be rescuers finally broke through to buried bunkers, they often found scenes of unimaginable horror. In cellars suffering direct hits, walls were awash in blood, with bone, brains, and body parts splattered everywhere.
Rescuers who entered some bunkers found floors covered in up to a foot of greasy fat. The victims rendered down into a dark liquid. When word first filtered through to the outside world of the butchery being visited upon the women and children of Germany by the Royal Air Force, critics of these war crimes spoke out.
Speaker 4: The ruthless mass bombing of congested cities is as great a threat to the integrity of the human spirit as anything which has yet occurred on this planet. There is no military or political or political advantage which can justify this blasphemy.
Speaker 0: Although it was considered treasonous for members of the RAF to criticize
Speaker 5: There were people down there being fried to death in melted asphalt in the roads. They were being burnt up, and we were shuffling incendiary bombs into this holocaust. I felt terribly sorry for the people in that fire that I was helping to stoke up.
Speaker 0: As a symbol of the 3rd Reich and as the most obvious example of Germany's will to fight on, more bombs were devoted to Berlin than any other German city. It is another place, however, that has become most widely associated with the terror campaign waged against Germany, Dresden. Since Dresden had suffered only 2 small raids in the 5 years of war, many assumed that the city's salvation was due to its irreplaceable treasures, ornate palaces, world renowned museums and art galleries, its towering centuries old cathedrals. Others surmise that since Dresden had almost no heavy industry and what little it did have had no bearing on the war, the enemy simply did not deem the city a viable target. To some, the 26,000 allied POWs interned within the town appeared a more logical answer.
Still others thought that perhaps it was the estimated half 1000000 refugees jamming the city, many who had fled Soviet atrocities in the east that kept Dresden safe from bombing. Despite the dire situation as war closed in, Dresdeners were determined on the night of February 13th to enjoy an annual event known in America as Mardi Gras, but celebrated in Germany as fashion. Women and children, along with the few remaining men, many in costume, flooded the streets of Dresden to celebrate the event one last time before Germany's looming defeat. Just before 10 PM, sirens began wailing. There was no panic.
Most residents simply ignored the sounds. Even had there been any air raid shelters, few would have fled to them, for there seemed little doubt on this cold yet cheery night that like the 171 false alarms which had preceded it, this warning too would end in nothing. However, instead of the all clear siren, a short time later, Dresden heard another sound, a sound similar to a rolling earthquake. As wave after wave of RAF bombers appeared overhead, thousands of bombs tumbled down. Added to the normal payload of high explosives, 100 of 2 and 4 ton blockbuster bombs slammed into Dresden, obliterating entire neighborhoods.
Ancient cathedrals, palaces, and museums were reduced to rubble within seconds. At the railroad station, hundreds of individuals who have refused to leave their highly coveted train seats were blown to bits. At the huge indoor circus, spectators, performers, and animals were slaughtered by blast and hissing shrapnel. Well marked hospitals were targeted. In the streets, on the sidewalks, atop the bridges, over the Elbe River, costumed revelers with nowhere to run were slain by the 1,000.
Without let up, the massacre continued. And then, the roar above ceased. The explosion stopped and there was quiet once more. Several minutes later, the welcomed silence was broken by the even more welcome sound of the all clear signal. What had seemed an all night trial by fire had actually occurred in just under half an hour.
In those 30 minutes, however, one of the world's most beautiful architectural treasures had all but vanished. Fire brigades from surrounding towns arrived. Red Cross workers spread out to help the victims. Families screamed for missing loved ones. For many, the end of the world had seemingly arrived.
No one, however, was at all emotionally prepared for what came next. At 1:30 AM, the earth began to tremble once again. As more than a 1000 bombers roared overhead, a rain of death showered down on Dresden. In addition to explosives, the second wave bought tons of incendiary bombs. In a matter of minutes, the thousands of firebombs ignited the debris, and a racing furnace of flame erupted.
Unfamiliar with the bombing raids and firestorms, most Dresdeners reacted slowly. Many sought safety in cellars again, not realizing that the heat would transform their havens into ovens. Others ran for safety through the streets, only to become mired in melting asphalt or sucked into the roaring furnace. Copper roofs melted, sending down streams of molten metal

Speaker 0: Throughout the night, the fiery hell that was Dresden claimed victims by the 1,000, by the tens of 1,000, and by the 100 of 1,000. The following day when the fires had cooled, rescue workers went to work.
Speaker 7: Never would I have thought that death could come to so many people in so many different ways. Sometimes the victims looked like ordinary people, apparently peacefully sleeping. Faces of others were wracked with pain. Their bodies stripped almost naked by the tornado. They have a wretched refugees from the east, clad only in rags, and people from the opera, in all their finery.
Here the victims was a shapeless slab, bare a lay of ashes. Across the city, along the streets wafted the unmistakable stench of decaying flesh.
Speaker 0: Indeed of all the hideous scents wafting through Dresden, sulfur, gas, sewage, The heavy stench of cooked flesh blanketed all. What were at first mistaken to be thousands of burnt logs scattered about the streets were soon found to be charred corpses glued to the surface, each reduced to roughly 3 feet.
Speaker 8: One shape I will never forget was the remains of what had apparently been a mother and a child. They had shriveled and charred into one piece and had been stuck rigidly to the asphalt. They had just been priced up. The child must have been underneath the mother because you could still clearly see its shape with its mother's arms clasped around it.
Speaker 0: Aware that those in the old city would flee the flames to the open spaces, the RAF had hurled hundreds of high explosive bombs into the huge central park. Here, the slaughter was ghastly. Torn off limbs, mutilated torsos, heads blown from their bodies and hurled away. The nightmare was everywhere. I
Speaker 9: went down to my knees, trembled, and cried. Several women lay there with their bellies burst open. And one could see the babies for they were hanging half outside. Many of the babies were mutilated. Seems like that one I saw everywhere, and very slowly, one became not.
1 acted like a zombie.
Speaker 0: The next morning, word spread that survivors should assemble in the city park. As the suffering mass climbed over the debris and the dead, they reached the park as well as the grassy banks of the elb. Some found missing loved ones. Most, however, did not. And then, shattering the calm came the sounds once more, the roar of engines overhead.
As US bombers began blasting the rubble to dust, American fighter planes zeroed in on the thousands of refugees at the park, along the river and in other open spaces. Even zoo animals, which had miraculously managed to survive the bombing raids, were strafed and slaughtered. A weeping zookeeper watched as an American pilot chased down and shot his last remaining giraffe. Although the raid lasted only 10 minutes, the Americans returned the next day and the next and the next, seemingly determined that not a single living thing should survive in Dresden. One of the horrors for those who had survived the nightmare was recovery of the dead.
Initially, bodies were pitchforged onto trucks and wagons and then taken to shallow graves on the outskirts of Dresden. It soon became clear that such a slow process could never handle the enormous amount of bodies. So huge girls were fashioned from girders in various parts of town and corpses were stacked on them like logs. When the piles reached roughly 10 feet high and 30 feet wide, flame throwers were used to ignite the mass. 1 month after the massacre, the Dresden chief of police reported that over 200,000 bodies had been recovered from the ruins.
Later, the International Red Cross estimated that 275,000 had died in the raids. Because of the incredible density of Dresden's population on the night of February 13th through 14th, because thousands of victims were refugees with no records, and because many bodies either lay buried forever in the ruins or had simply melted like wax, other estimates which place the death toll at 300,000 to 400,000 may well be closer to the mark. More people died during the firebombing of Dresden than during the nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki combined.
Speaker 10: To just fly over it without opposition felt like murder. I felt it was a cowardly war.
Speaker 0: Working in tandem with the terror bombing of German cities was the targets of opportunity policy upon the countryside. Under this order, anything moving in the Reich was fair game for allied fighter planes. Ships, trucks, cars, trains, ambulances, women shopping on bicycles, farmers in fields, animals in pastures, even children in school yards were targets of Allied aircraft. In a flagrant attempt to widen the war, American bombers even attacked Zurich, Basel, and other targets in neutral Switzerland. Additionally, Winston Churchill made plans to saturate German cities with poison gas and kill those women and children yet alive amid the rubble.
When advisors pointed out that Adolf Hitler might reply in kind with his own stockpiles of chemical weapons, the murderous plan was shelved. Meanwhile, the hell raining from the clouds mirrored an ongoing hell rising from the mud. As Germans soon came to realize, the allied powers sought not only the physical destruction of Germany, but the spiritual massacre of the nation as well. The evil swept in from the east. There were constant rumors and hints about what might be expected should the Soviet Union overrun Germany.
Most Germans, however, remained hopeful. Such notions of Asiatic hordes, many felt, were merely the government's attempt to harden their will to resist. Thus it was that on the night of October 20, 1944, as the village of and other communities nearest the front slept in imagined security, the unthinkable occurred. After punching a hole through the German line, the red Army suddenly burst into the Reich and swarmed over the countryside. After several days of desperate fighting, the German Wehrmacht regrouped, launched a furious counter attack, and eventually drove the Red Army across the border.
What German troops soon found was staggering. It was at Nemmersdorf where stunned soldiers first viewed hell on earth. Along the roads, fleeing refugees had been overtaken by the communists. The people were pulled from their carts, raped, then murdered on the spot.
Speaker 7: In the farmyard further down the road stood a cart to which 4 naked women were nailed to their hands in a cruciform position. Beyond stood a barn and to each of its two doors, a naked woman was nailed through the hands in a crucified posture. In the dwellings, we found a total of 72 women, including children, and one old man, 74, all dead. All murdered in a bestial manner, except only a few who had bullet holes in their necks. Some babies had their heads dashed in.
In one room, we found a woman, 84 years old, sitting on a sofa, half of whose head had been shared off with an axe or a spade.
Speaker 0: Old men who had tried to protect their wives, daughters, and granddaughters were themselves knocked down, then sawed in half. 50 French POWs and Polish workers who had instinctively stepped in to protect the people were castrated and killed. Staggered by the enormity of the crime, German authorities requested that neutral observers from Spain, Sweden, and Switzerland view the sickening carnage close-up. However, when the visitors filed their reports and word finally reached the outside world, there was only silence. By the winter of 1944, the vicious propaganda war waged against Germany had been won.
By that late stage of the conflict, the war of words had reached such evil extremes that few individuals beyond the Reich's borders were concerned about brained German babies or crucified German women. By the final months of the war, the enemy to be destroyed was not merely Adolf Hitler, the Nazi party, or even the soldiers in the field. By the final months of the war, the aim of the approaching allies was nothing less than the utter extinction of the German nation. Every man, every woman, every child. Fueling the flames of hate was the Jewish propagandist, Ilya Ehrenberg.
One of the most influential men in the Soviet Union, Ehrenberg made sure his message of evil reached every soldier in the Red Army by ordering that leaflets be dropped from airplanes onto the front lines.
Speaker 9: Kill them all. Men, old men, children, and the women. After you have abused yourself, mister, kill. Nothing in Germany is guiltless. Neither the living nor the yet unborn.
Break the racial pride of the German woman. Take her as your legitimate booty. Kill your brave soldiers of the victorious Soviet army.
Speaker 0: Soon, as the Red Army forced the Wehrmacht back in the east, millions of German civilians suffered the same ghastly fate as the victims of Nemmersdorf. Although first encounters with Soviet shock troops were truly traumatic, it was the second wave of soldiers who delivered hell on earth. In numerous instances, before troops pushed on, they turned to the helpless civilians and warned
Speaker 6: The Mongols are coming. Very bad men. You go quick. Go quick.
Speaker 0: Terrified by the news, many Germans did attempt to flee. Most, however, found themselves trapped. Other than destroy liquor and hide young girls, most could only watch the clock and pray that their worst fears were unfounded. After a wait of sometimes days, but normally hours, the dreaded second wave arrived. Composed largely of Mongols and other Asians as well as convicts, these men who formed the 2nd wave of troops were regarded even by their own comrades as utterly merciless.
Leading this group were the communist commissars, the fanatical political officers composed almost exclusively of Jews. These hate filled individuals acted as the more than willing orchestrators of the horrors that befell the German people. Of all the methods used to express its hatred, the Red Army said it best with rape.
Speaker 11: And when the first Russians came, the combat troops, they came in and wanted to see everything, Asked about weapons and soldiers, looked at everything closely, didn't find anything, and were very friendly, And then just left.
Speaker 3: And then
Speaker 11: the next lot arrived. The next one took me outside straight away. My mother wanted to throw herself in front of me but she was pushed back. And then they took me upstairs, and as I tried to defend myself, they showed me his gun. And then when I came back down, I was quite shocked and but I was just happy that I was still alive.
They said, woman, come. They said it in German. Frau kom in German. We were the prize. It was always like that.
Speaker 0: From 8 to 80 years old, healthy or ill, indoors or out, in fields, on sidewalks, against walls, the defilement, torture, and murder of German women continued unabated. Nearly because a female had been raped once was also no guarantee she would not be assaulted again and again and again.
Speaker 12: The Russians were coming and going the whole time, and they kept eyeing us greedily. The nights were dreadful because we were never safe for a moment. The women were raped not once or twice, but 10, 20, 30, and a 100 times. It is false all the same to the Russians versus they raped mere children or old women. The youngest victim in the war houses where we lived was 10 years of age, and the oldest one was over 70.
Speaker 0: The women of Germany not only had to endure this onslaught of rape, torture, and murder, but also the humiliation of having it witnessed by friends and family.
Speaker 13: These atrocities were not committed secretly or in hidden corners, but in public, in churches, on the streets, and on the squares. Mothers were raped in the presence of their children. Girls were raped in front of their brothers.
Speaker 0: When even violated corpses could no longer be of use, sticks, iron bars, and telephone receivers were commonly rammed into their vaginas. Jewish commissars had a special desire to defile the churches of Germany. Soon after the fall of Danzig, 100 of desperate females pleaded with an officer for protection. The Soviet pointed to a Catholic cathedral. After the women were safely inside, the officer yelled to his men, pointed to the church, and with bells ringing and organ pipes roaring, the horror continued all night.
Some women and girls inside, some as young as 8 years old, were raped more than 30 times. Little boys who tried to shield their mothers were shot. When Soviet soldiers captured the city of Newstatten in February 1945, they discovered several large camps of the women's Reich Labor Service, an organization composed mostly of girls who worked on various projects from nursing to street repair. After recapturing the area, the German soldiers were horrified by what had happened to the 25 100 females.
Speaker 6: We had never seen anything lagged, utterly and unbelievably monstrous. Naked dead women lay in many of the rooms. Swastic has been cut into their abdomens. With some, the intestines bulged out. Breasts were cut up.
Faces beaten to a pulp and swollen puffy. Others had been tied to the furniture by their hands and feet and massacred. A broomstick protruded from the vagina of 1, a dozen from that of another. The mothers had to witness how their 10 12 year old daughters were raped by some 20 men. The daughters in turn saw their mothers being raped, even their grandmothers.
Women who tried to resist were brutally tortured to death. There was no mercy. The women we liberated were in a state almost impossible to describe. Their faces had a confused, vacant look. Someone beyond speaking to ran up and down and moaned the same sentences over and over again.
Having seen the consequences of these bestial atrocities, we were terribly agitated and determined to fight. We knew of all that's passed in, but it was our obligation and sacred duty to fight to the very last bullet.
Speaker 0: While its men fought furiously in the east, Germany was also trying to stave off invasion from the west. Unfortunately, the invaders on this front often did not behave any better than their Soviet allies. Battlefield newsmen to the West simply did not report the crimes. As tens of thousands of German rape victims could attest, there was no safety among the American and British. Millions massacred.
Millions raped. Millions already enslaved. But this was only the beginning of Germany's nightmare. With the German army in headlong retreat, hordes of red soldiers swarmed into Greater Germany during
Speaker 6: the last winter of the war.
Speaker 0: As word of the Soviet breakthrough spread, millions of Germans hastily packed and fled into the freezing weather. Most merely packed farm carts, hitched horses or cows, and set off as fast as their animals would take them. Already bitterly cold, several days after the treks began, the temperature plunged. As a result, little children and infants dropped by the 1,000. With the Earth hard as rock, tiny holes dug in the snow banks served as graves.
Speaker 12: It was so terribly cold when the wind was like ice. The snow was falling Nothing warm to eat. No milk. Nothing. I tried to give Gabby the breast behind the house, but she didn't take it because everything was so cold.
Many women tried that when some froze their breasts.
Speaker 0: Given the chaotic conditions and with freezing refugees clogging the way, many treks were quickly overhauled by the Russians. Some Soviet tanks crashed straight through the columns, squashing all in their path. After heavy traffic, the victims, men, women, children, animals, all, were pressed together as flat as cardboard. Those terrified survivors who had scattered to the icy countryside fell easy prey. As always, for the females, the living death soon began.
For millions of Germans cut off on the Baltic coast, only one avenue of escape remained, the sea. As isolated Wehrmacht units desperately defended their shrinking Baltic beachheads, millions of refugees poured into the coastal enclaves. With their backs literally to the sea, only the slow and treacherous evacuation by boat was an option. Consequently, at Memel, Konigsberg, Danzig, and other besieged cauldrons, the situation was appalling.
Speaker 7: Every alley, every street was packed with their vehicles. People who were waiting in every harbor shed, in every windshield at corner, among them stood their beasts bleating, snorting, lowing. The pregnant women giving birth somewhere in a corner on the ground in a barracks. Some of them had been raped on their flight, and now they were trembling for fear they would give birth to a monster. Strangely pale faces of girls going up and down the streets asking for a doctor, the wounded, and the sick, in constant fear, they would be left behind, concealing weapons under their blankets to force someone to take them along or to end their own lives if the Russians came.
The orphans who had been saved from the asylum somewhere at the last moment and tossed onto cards with nothing around them but a blanket and who are now lying on the floors with frozen limbs. The old people who had lain down in some doorway at night and had not awakened, and the wild eyed, insane ones who rushed from house to house, from wagon to wagon, crying for their mothers, for their children. Over it all, the gray sky, snow, frost, and thaw, and thaw, and frost, and snow, and the chill killing wet.
Speaker 0: When a long sought vessel finally tied up and lowered the walkways, pandemonium erupted on the docks. Because of an order granting priority to those with children, the latter became more valuable than gold. Once adults had boarded, they often tossed infants to relatives or friends below, in hopes they might also board. Many babies died, of course, either falling into the freezing water or smashing onto the docks below. Nearby, terribly wounded soldiers quietly awaited their turn to board.
For those who sailed from the besieged ports, their prayers appeared answered. For those left standing behind, their doom seemed sealed. Many men, in a surge of madness, shot themselves. Crazed mothers, with starvation gnawing and the red terror looming, found cyanide and poisoned their children, then themselves. Old people merely crawled into snowbanks, fell asleep, and never awoke.
Unfortunately, for thousands of refugees, there was no escaping the nightmare, even at sea. While many refugee ships successfully traversed the treacherous Baltic, Allied bombers were often the first to greet them when they docked. At Swinamunde in Northern Germany, the arrival of a freighter loaded with evacuees coincided almost exactly with an allied air raid. Hardly had the ship docked when a direct hit sent it to the bottom, taking 2,000 screaming passengers with it. On January 30, 1945, over 60,000 refugees crowded the docks of Gotenhofen, desperately trying to board the Wilhelm Gustloff, a former cruise liner designed to accommodate 2,000 passengers and crew.
By the time the beautiful white ship cast off, she had taken on as many as 6 to 8,000 refugees. As the gooselof backed away from the port, her path was blocked by smaller craft, all jammed with passengers begging to come aboard. Nets were lowered, and an additional 2,000 refugees scrambled up. Strained far beyond its limits, the tightly sealed ship filled with a hot, nauseating stench of urine, excrement, and vomit. The groans of severely wounded soldiers and the screams of separated families added to the ghastly horror, but the worst was yet to come.
At approximately 9 PM, 3 heavy thuds rocked the goose loft. Panic stricken, 1,000 below deck stampeded through the narrow passageways, crushing and clawing in a mad attempt to reach safety. Most lifeboats were frozen solid, and even those that could be freed were mishandled in the panic, spilling their screaming occupants into the icy Black Sea. Within a few minutes, those in the water were dead. While thousands of freezing people pressed along the decks, loud speakers blared words of comfort, assuring passengers that the ship would not sink and help was on the way.
Convinced that the sealed bulkheads had held and that indeed the ship would remain afloat, many refugees fled indoors once more to escape the razor sharp winds and the minus 20 degree temperature. The respite proved brief, however. At 10 o'clock, a heavy tremor ripped the goosecloth as the bulkheads broke and the sea rushed in. Within seconds, the big ship began to roll on its side, then plunged beneath the waves. When rescue ships later reached the scene, they pulled from the icy waters a mere 900 survivors.
All else, roughly 7 to 9000 men, women, and children were lost. As many more incidents would prove, the sinking of the Guslof was no mistake. In a deliberate attempt to kill as many refugees as possible, Soviet submarines struck again and again at the slow moving ships. Soon after midnight on February 10th, an old luxury liner, the general Stubben, was plowing through the icy black Baltic. Heavily weighed down with refugees and wounded soldiers, the ship was in the midst of its second such evacuation in less than a fortnight.
Just before 1 AM, 2 torpedoes slammed into the ship's side. As the Steuben's stern rose high out of the water, 100 leaped overboard, including some who were torn to pieces by the still turning propellers. Within 7 minutes, the ship plunged beneath the waves, swiftly silencing a final mass scream that seemed to arise from a single voice. Of the 35100 passengers aboard, only a few 100 survived.
Speaker 1: Like some great wild animal. The red army moves closer to the heart of Germany in countless German cities and towns, the pattern repeated itself. The bloody nightmare which enveloped the Baltic coast was typical of that which transpired wherever the Soviets occupied German soil. In many places, Cilicia, Prussia, Pomerania In the German communities of Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia, Poland, and Hungary. A similar horror had been in progress for weeks.
There, the ghastly atrocities actually increased as if red soldiers were in a mad race with one another to see who could destroy murder and above all who could rape the most. Meanwhile, the American and British forces punched through the German lines in the West and like the East front, however, German soldiers were well aware that the foes they faced in the West were signatories of the Geneva Convention. Under this agreement, captured or surrendering German soldiers were protected by law With the Red Army roaring across Germany from the East many Germans secretly hoped that the Americans might occupy what remained of the Reich before the communists did. It was no secret the Germans, high and low, considered the Americans and British the lesser of 2 evils. Unfortunately, they were not always right.
Speaker 0: In the spring of 1945, as Berliners prepared to defend the capital from the encircling Soviet Army, Germans to the west also fought to halt the Allied tide. Unlike the howling savagery to the east, fraught with nightmarish ferocity, defeat in the west came methodically, relentlessly, and judged by the standards of the east almost silently. As the western front crept closer, civilians anxiously awaited the allied arrival. Unlike the terrified truckers to the east, relatively few Germans in the west abandoned their homes. The racial and cultural ties with the enemy, particularly the Americans, were simply too strong to arouse the same terror as the Soviets did.
Far from fleeing the advancing allies, many civilians actually ran to greet them. Little did the Germans realize that because of the decade of Jewish propaganda, the Americans were perhaps even more hate filled than the Soviets. Unlike the wild and almost unimaginable Red Army, US military commanders might have easily prevented crimes committed against helpless civilians had they only willed it. In most cases, however, they did not. Leading the charge against the German people was general Dwight d Eisenhower, a man whose hatred of all things German was well known.
In much the same vein as Stalin and Roosevelt, Eisenhower advocated the outright massacre of German army officers, Nazi party members, and others. In all, according to the allied commander, at least 100,000 German leaders should be exterminated. Not surprisingly, such sentiment from above quickly filtered down. The only good German is a dead German became the pervasive sentiment. Take no prisoners was the tacit understanding.
By the tens of 1,000, captured or surrendering Germans were simply slaughtered on the spot. As American forces swept toward Munich in late April 1945, most German guards at the concentration camp near Dachau fled. Despite signs at the gate warning, no entrance, typhus epidemic, several 100 German soldiers were ordered to the prison to maintain order and arrange the transfer of over 30,000 prisoners to the allies. When the Americans reached Dachau the following day, they were horrified by what they saw. Outside the prisons had railcars full of diseased and starved corpses.
Inside the camp, a room piled high with naked and emaciated bodies was also discovered. Unhinged by the nightmare, atrocities they had heard so much about in America, officers turned their enraged troops loose on the now disarmed German soldiers.
Speaker 14: The men were deliberately wounding guards. A lot of guards were shot in the legs so they couldn't move. They were then turned over to the inmates. 1 was beheaded with a bayonet. Others were ripped apart limb by limb.
Speaker 0: While the tortures were in progress, a lieutenant forced over 300 captive Germans up against a wall, planted 2 machine guns, then ordered his men to open fire. Those still alive when the fuselage ended were forced to stand amid the carnage, while the machine gunners reloaded. In all, over 500 helpless German soldiers were slaughtered in cold blood. As a final touch, the citizens of Dachau were forced to bury the thousands of corpses in the camp, thereby assuring the death of many more from disease. Few Americans noticed because few cared, but conditions in German cities and towns were not much better than that at Dachau.
Because of the round the clock American and British air attacks week after week, very little food and almost no medicine was arriving anywhere in Germany. Virtually none reached the numerous concentration camps, where during the last days, disease and starvation swept away the inmates by the 1,000. The incident at Dachau was merely one of many massacres committed by US troops.
Speaker 15: We had been held up at a little town. We were supposed to just walk through it, and the Germans stopped us dead. We just couldn't crack it. Eventually, artillery came in, sort of leveled the houses. They finally surrendered and they came out and sort of lined up.
And per usual, no one knew what was

Speaker 15: on. We had a new battalion commander just graduated from West Point, and he lined them up and said, I want you to shoot him. And I was horrified. Quite a few of us were horrified. And I went to him and told him, you know, that this was against all international law and humanity.
My good buddy who I'd spent so much time with grabbed me and said, this nut'll shoot you. You better quit. Knock this off. And and, he got enough guys and they shot these about 25 prisoners. It was a terrible thing to see.
And I talked to a lot of my buddies who had shot these guys, and they were horrified too.
Speaker 0: Unaware of the deep hatred the allies harbored for them, when proud SS units surrendered, they naively assumed that they would be accorded respect as the unsurpassed fighters that they had proven to be. As soon as they were disarmed, most were slaughtered where they stood. For those members of the German military lucky enough to survive capture, death often awaited behind the lines where 1,000 more perished. With General Eisenhower turning a blind eye to the Geneva Convention, only the threat of retaliation against Allied POWs still held in Germany prevented a massacre of prodigious proportions. Soon after US combat soldiers moved out of a community and the rear echelon troops moved in, the reality of occupation became clear to the German citizens.
The second wave of soldiers, wanting to experience a bit of war on their own, took out their aggression on the helpless Germans by looting, raping, killing, and destroying. In many towns, the invaders unlocked jails, prisons, and concentration camps, and invited the inmates to join in the revelry.

With the final capitulation in May 1945, the supreme allied commander found himself control of over 5,000,000 ragged, weary, but living enemy soldiers. Since Eisenhower could not kill more armed Germans in war, the American desk general decided to kill disarmed Germans in peace. Because the Geneva Convention guaranteed POWs the same food, shelter, and medical attention as their captors, Eisenhower simply circumvented the treaty by creating his own category for prisoners.
Under this reclassification, German soldiers were no longer considered POWs, but DEFs, Disarmed Enemy Forces. Actually, American supply depots were bursting at the seams. Instead of allowing even a trickle of this bounty to reach the compounds, the starvation diet was further reduced. Within full view of some camps, Americans would sadistically burn food that they could not eat themselves.
Civilians from nearby villages and towns, themselves starving, were prevented at gunpoint from passing their own meager fare through the fence to prisoners. Horrified by the silent secret massacre, the International Red Cross, which had over 100,000 tons of food stored in Switzerland, tried to intercede. When 2 trains filled with supplies reached the camps, however, they were turned back by American officers. Many people found no justification whatsoever in the massacre of helpless prisoners, especially since the German government had lived up to the Geneva Convention, as one American put it, to a American put it, to a t. What little food the slaves received was intended merely to maintain their strength until they were worked to death. Much the same might be said of the 600,000 German slaves held by the French.
Ultimately, no fewer than 800,000 German prisoners died in the American and French death camps. Indeed, recent estimates placed the death toll at upwards of 1,500,000. And thus, in peace did Eisenhower murder at least 10 times the number of German soldiers than were killed on the whole Western front during the whole of the war. With the once mighty Wehrmacht now disarmed and enslaved, and with their leaders either dead or awaiting trial for war crimes, the old men, women, and children who remained in the dismembered Reich now found themselves utterly at the mercy of the victors. Unfortunately, never in the history of the world was mercy in shorter supply.
Soon after their victory in Europe, the allied purge of Nazi party members commenced. In theory, denazification was a simple transplanting of party officials with those of democratic, socialist, or communist underpinnings. All adult Germans were compelled to register at the nearest allied headquarters and complete a lengthy questionnaire on past activities. While many nervous citizens were detained then and there, most returned home, convinced that their terrible ordeal was over.
For 1,000,000, however, the trial had just begun. Few German adults, Nazi or not, escaped the dreaded knock on the door. Many people were arrested multiple times, including Leni Riefenstahl, a talented young woman who was perhaps the world's most artistic filmmaker. Staffed and run by Jews with help from the Poles, Czechs, Russians, and other former concentration camp inmates, the prisons were little better than vast torture chambers where dying was a thing to be prolonged, not hastened. While those with blonde hair, blue eyes and handsome features were first to go, anyone who spoke German would do. For these vengeful camp operators, no torture, no sadism, no depravity, no evil seemed too monstrous to inflict on those now in their power. Some Germans were forced to crawl naked on all fours and eat their own excrement as well as that of others.
Many were drowned in open latrines. 100 were herded into buildings and burned to death or sealed in caskets and buried alive. Near Lamsdorf, German women were forced to disinter bodies from a Polish burial site, then kiss and make love to the putrid, rotting corpses. Not surprisingly, the mortality rate at the concentration camps was staggering. And of those rare individuals who did leave with their lives, few could any longer be called human.
Meanwhile, as the judicial charade was in progress behind prison walls, tortures of another kind stalked the liberated German people as the allied victors enacted their plan to divide, loot, and utterly destroy conquered Germany. In late 1944, the so called Morgenthau plan was endorsed by president Roosevelt, making the Jewish prewar demand for German extermination official. Named for Roosevelt's secretary of the treasury, Henry Morgenthau, but actually conceived by the secretary's top aide, Harry Dexter White, both of whom were Jewish. The program called for the complete destruction of Germany after victory had been won. In addition to the dismantling and destruction of heavy industry and the permanent closure of mines, the Morgenthau plan called for a reduction of the Reichsland area by 1 half.
As many knew, this act guaranteed that roughly 2 thirds of the German population or 50,000,000 people would soon die of starvation. With the remnant of the population reduced to subsistence farming and with the shrunken nation totally at the mercy of hostile European neighbors, it was estimated that within 2 generations, Germany would cease to exist. When Roosevelt's successor, Harry Truman, met at Potsdam with Stalin and the new British prime minister, Clement Atlee in July 1945, most of the teeth in Morgenthau's murderous scheme remained on the table. With the signature of the big three, the plan went into effect. Stalin's methodical looting in the Russian occupation zone became prodigious.
Steel mills, grain mills, lumber mills, sugar and oil refineries, chemical plants, optical works, shoe factories, and other heavy industries were taken apart down to the last nut and bolt and sent east to the Soviet Union where they were reassembled. Those factories allowed to remain in Germany were to operate solely for the benefit of Russia. Electric and steam locomotives, their rolling stock, and even the tracks they ran on were likewise sent east. Unlike its primitive Soviet ally, the United States had no need for German plants and factories. Nevertheless, the Americans were far and away the most zealous at destroying Germany's ability to recover.
While the US may have spurned German industry, they had a great interest in the Reich's hoard of treasure. 1,000,000,000 of dollars in gold, silver, and currency, as well as priceless paintings, sculptures, and other artworks were plucked from their hiding places in caves, tunnels, and salt mines, and shipped across the Atlantic. Additionally, and a far greater damage to Germany's future, was the mental dismantling of the Reich. Tons of secret documents revealing Germany's tremendous organizational talent in business and industry were simply stolen. 100 of the greatest scientists in the world were likewise compelled to immigrate by the victors.

On their own, orphans aged fast, and little girls aged fastest of all. Like their older sisters, the children soon discovered that selling themselves could stave off starvation, A dreaded concern, not only for those who were selling themselves, but for the millions of rape victims was unwanted pregnancy.

Never heard the animal shrieks of the torture as their genitals are mutilated, or the groans of a bleeding woman begging for a bullet while the line awaiting its turn grows longer. Hopefully these people have never seen such things, for only then one can understand how they might parrot over and over again the standard refrain, they got exactly what they deserved, and never lose a moment's sleep.
Still, if there is one central truth that was born of World War II, it is that clearly there is no such thing as a good war. Those who say differently are either those who profit politically or financially from war, or those who have never witnessed war up close, in all its horror.

This war will not come to an end the way the Druze imagine with the extermination of the Arian people. Instead, it will see the complete annihilation of the Druze. I do not play at war. Speaker 7: You can most easily tell a Jew by his nose. It looks like the number six. His lips are usually puffy. You can tell by his eyes that he is deceitful. If you have a good nose, you can smell the juice.
Speaker 1: Any opposition to Hitler is ruthlessly eradicated. Tens of thousands are imprisoned. Journalist Stefan Laurent dared to criticize the Fuhrer.
Speaker 8: I am writing in Cell Number 24. Outside, a new Germany is being created. Many millions are rejoicing. Hitler is promising everyone precisely what they want. I think that when they wake to their sober senses, they will find that they have been led by the nose and duped by lies.
Speaker 1: August 1936. Adolf Hitler arrives to open the eleventh Olympic Games in Berlin. Hitler is determined these games will be a showpiece for his new Germany. Jewish Professor Victor Klemperer.
Speaker 2: I find the Olympics so odious. The chanted slogans on the streets have been banned. Jew baiting, warlike sentiments, everything offensive has disappeared from the papers. The attention of our guests is repeatedly drawn to how peacefully and pleasantly things are proceeding here.

Speaker 6: The idea of a Germany intimidating Europe forms no part of Hitler's new vision. The Germans have definitely made up their minds never to quarrel with us again.

Speaker 0: The world is moving towards a new conflict. Making the German army into the first in the world is vital. If this does not happen, then Germany will be lost. We must be ready for war in four years' time.
Speaker 1: July 1937. Adolf Hitler's personal pilot, SS Oberfuhrer Hans Bauer, accompanies him to a pageant to celebrate two thousand years of German culture. Bauer is permitted to film his Fuhrer with his own camera. 14 year old Ingeborg Weber.
Speaker 10: The four years the Fuhrer asked for to fulfill his promises are. What great things he has achieved. The communists have disappeared from Germany. There is no unemployment. The Fuhrer has given us back our self respect.
Speaker 1: For the past six years, Adolf Hitler has kept a secret from the German people. Hidden away from all but his closest companions is his mistress, Eva Brown.
Speaker 11: The weather is so wonderful, and I, the mistress of the greatest man in the world, am sitting here and gazing at the sun.
Speaker 1: With a camera given to her by Hitler, Eva Braun films his private life.
Speaker 11: I'm so terribly happy that he loves me so much, and I pray that it will always be like this. He has had a head full of politics all this time, but surely it is time he relaxed a little.

Speaker 1: Eva intercepts the letter. It will never reach the Fuhrer. Eva always appears happy, the center of attention, But the only surviving fragments of her diary reveal a different story.
Speaker 11: When he says he loves me, it only means he loves me at that particular moment. Like his promises which he never keeps. I am utterly miserable. I shall go out and buy some sleeping pills, then I won't think about it so much.
Speaker 1: Eva has already made two attempts at suicide, but Hitler still refuses to marry her.
Speaker 0: A highly intelligent man should take a primitive and stupid woman. Imagine if I had a woman who interfered with my work. In my leisure time, I want to have peace. I could never marry. It's the same with a movie actor.
When he marries, he loses a certain something for the women who adore him. Then he is no longer their idol.
Speaker 1: September 1937. The people of Berlin are preparing for a state visit from Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini. Hitler is building a new military alliance in Europe.

Speaker 1: Hitler parades his new army in front of Mussolini. Accompanying the two dictators is Hitler's interpreter, Paul Schmidt.
Speaker 9: I had ample opportunity of observing the two of them. Hitler's voice was rough and often hoarse. Sometimes, his eyes blazed. His laugh always had a flavor of sarcasm. There was an interesting ceremony with Mussolini appointing Hitler an honorary corporal in the Fascist militia.
Speaker 1: Hitler has also signed a pact with Japan. With his new axis of power in place, he is ready to make his next move. March 1938, Hitler announces the Nazi takeover of Austria. Born in Austria, Hitler has always dreamt of merging his homeland into a greater German Reich. Karl Tuzian is a soldier in the Austrian army.
Speaker 15: We've been told German troops should not be met with any resistance. God save Austria. Everywhere, there are people on the streets and swastika flags. Germany has apparently saved us from the communists. Now everyone is on side of the winners.

Speaker 17: Now comes Czechoslovakia. The Fuhrer is wonderful, a true genius. He sits for hours over the map and broods. The Fuhrer is pleased that Czechs are being so stubborn. All the more will they be torn to pieces one day.
And they haven't the slightest idea what's going to happen. Poor fools.
Speaker 1: Hitler claims that ethnic Germans living in the Czechoslovak province of Sudetenland are being oppressed. German newspapers are full of fabricated stories of violence and rape. Reports of German troop movements convinced the Western allies, Britain and France, that this distant border dispute could lead to war. During the annual Nazi party rally, the news has announced that negotiations with the Czech government have broken down. When Hitler begins his closing speech, the whole world is listening.

Speaker 1: twelfth nineteen thirty nine. Adolf Hitler visits his childhood home, the small Austrian village of Fischelheim. Son of a local customs officer, Hitler lays flowers on his parents' grave and then visits his old school.
Speaker 0: It was here that my first ideals took shape. My association with the rougher boys made me the very opposite of a stay at home. Even then, my speaking talents were being developed in violent arguments with my school friends. Woods and meadows were then my battlefields.

Speaker 1: Forty eight hours later, Stalin agrees not to interfere with Hitler's plans. More than 2,000,000 men await their Fuhrer's orders.
Speaker 0: No one will ever again have the confidence of the whole German people. All depends on me. Our enemies have leaders who are second rate. I saw them in Munich. They are little worms.
Close your hearts to pitting. Act brutally. When starting a war, it is not right that matters, but victory.
Speaker 1: Early on the morning of September 1939, the German army invades Poland. The news is broadcast throughout Germany by Adolf Hitler himself. Werner Hartz is in Berlin.

Before then, there will be no peace in the world.
Speaker 1: May 1940. Hitler launches Blitzkrieg in the West. He catches the allies by complete surprise. Private Hans Gotthard.
Speaker 8: My darling wife, how can I start to describe this experience? From all sides, we can feel the march of thousands. The thunder of artillery never ceases, and we just follow its echo.
Speaker 1: In just two weeks, the German army has the allies on the run. At Dunkirk, more than 340,000 men of the British and French armies are forced to abandon France. Petal Souf is one of the first German soldiers on the beach.
Speaker 15: It is hard to describe panic of the English. Imagine a picture of absolute chaos on the beaches. Sorn away weapons and guns and lots of vehicles and tanks. Is the fall of Dunkirk? The whole of the Belgian and French coast is in our hands.

Speaker 1: The French formally surrender. Yet for some German soldiers, the price of victory is too high. Private Hans Goddard.
Speaker 8: My darling wife, I am completely shaken inside. Our soldiers have become childlike and cruel. When we have won this war, I can imagine all the enthusiastic speeches at home about our leadership and the spirit of the troops. I have to say it is untrue. We have only won due to our wickedness.
Speaker 1: 6AM, June the twenty eighth. Hitler enters the defeated French capital.
Speaker 0: Within barely six weeks of heroic struggle, our soldiers have ended the war in the West. Their deeds will enter into history as the most glorious victory of all time. I order flags to be flown throughout the Reich and bellstruing for seven days.
Speaker 1: Only Britain now stands in the way of Hitler's total mastery of Europe. A Week later, he returns to Berlin. Hundreds of thousands of people line the streets to greet him. He makes yet another offer of peace to Britain.
Speaker 0: Mister Churchill should place his trust in me. The continuation of this war will end in the complete destruction of one of our two nations. I know it will be Britain. I direct yet another appeal to reason.
Speaker 1: Winston Churchill refuses the offer. The battle for Britain has begun. Hitler believes his pilots must eliminate the Royal Air Force before an invasion can take place. This time, they encounter a more formidable enemy. Messerschmitt pilot, Ulrich Steinhelber.
Speaker 5: I can report I'd now shot down my fourth Spitfire, but it cost me an excellent pilot. The day before, we had three more losses. My wingman was also caught. There are only 12 left from the old crew. The British have a new engine in their Spitfires, and we can hardly keep up with it.
Speaker 1: A week later, Ulrich Steinhelper is shot down over Britain. When Churchill orders the bombing of German cities, Hitler switches his attack from the RAF to the British people.
Speaker 0: If the Royal Air Force should drop 2,000 or 4,000 bombs, then we will drop 200 or 400,000, even 1,000,000 bombs in a single night. If they then increase their attacks, we will obliterate their cities.
Speaker 1: Hitler's pilots blitz Britain day and night. Over the next nine months, more than 40,000 people are killed, but the British still refuse to give in. The Luftwaffe is starting to suffer heavy losses. Bomber pilot, Petter Stahl.
Speaker 20: Sixteenth of October. Our losses amount to four bombers and their crews. This is a heavy blow. And tomorrow, the official communicate state that our brave air crews have inflicted devastating damage on vital targets, and our own losses were only minimal. Speaker 1: By May 1941, Hitler has lost the battle for Britain. For the first time, he has met his match.
Speaker 0: I am not a man to abandon a fight once begun. I've proved this in my life, and I will prove this to Churchill.
Speaker 1: In Hitler's new eastern provinces, victory has brought a brutal new regime.
Speaker 0: The Poles have a thin Germanic layer. Below that is foul material, the Jews. The most disgusting thing imaginable. If Poland had lasted any longer, everything would be Lysren. A clear, masterful hand is now needed here.
Speaker 1: Hitler requires all Jews to be marked with a special armband. They're rounded up and forced to live in ghettos. The largest ghetto is in Poland's old capital, Warsaw. Four Hundred Thousand Jews are confined within its walls. 17 year old Mary Berg.
Speaker 21: The ghetto is becoming more and more crowded. There is a constant stream of new refugees. People are ragged and barefoot with the tragic eyes of those who are starving. Starvation alone is killing forty to 50 people each day. I saw a little girl crying.
She looked at me with her blue eyes and said, I'm hungry. Why does no one come to our aid? How long are we going to be kept here?

Speaker 17: The fearer prophesied that if the Jews brought about another world war, they would experience annihilation. The world war is here. The extermination of the Jews is the necessary consequence. Consequence.
Speaker 1: By the end of 1942, almost 300,000 men, women, and children have been taken from the Warsaw Ghetto to the death camp at Treblinka. Hitler's final solution has begun. After his defeat at the hands of the RAF, Hitler has abandoned his plans for an invasion of Britain. He prepares orders for a new war, this time against his ally, the Soviet Union. Speaker 13: This means that we are bringing on ourselves a war on two fronts that up to now we have been lucky to avoid. What we need is someone to oppose the Fuhrer, but there is no one.
Speaker 1: A war to destroy communism has been Hitler's dream for the last twenty years.
Speaker 0: Communism is an enormous danger for our future. We must forget any idea of comradeship between soldiers. This will be a war of annihilation.
Speaker 1: Dawn, June 1941. More than 3,000,000 German soldiers cross the border into the Soviet Union. Hitler's treaty with Stalin is over. Operation Barbarossa has begun. Karl Fuchs is a gunner in the seventh Panzer Division.
Speaker 19: War isn't half as bad as it sounds. The Russians are fleeing everywhere. Yesterday, I shot up a Russian tank. If I get another one, I'll get my first battle stripes. We're going to show those Bolshevik pigs who's who around here.

Speaker 1: By the war's end, more than 3,000,000 Soviet prisoners of war will have been killed. August 1941, Hitler visits the Eastern Front. With the Red Army in full retreat and large parts of the Soviet heartland in his grasp, his plans for an Eastern empire are beginning to take shape.
Speaker 0: What India is for Britain, Russia will be for us. If only I could make the German people understand what this space means for our future. Let's learn from the British. It is just a matter of dividing up a giant cake so that first we rule it, then administer it, and finally exploit it.
Speaker 1: But Hitler and his generals failed to defeat the Red Army before the start of the severe Russian winter. They are forced to call a halt to operation Barbarossa. Then on December, Hitler receives the news that his allies, the Japanese, have bombed Pearl Harbor. Adolf Hitler is faced by a new enemy, The United States.
Speaker 0: No power can shake us. I am Fuhrer of a Reich that will last for a thousand years. Churchill and Roosevelt are sitting over there in their plutocratic little world. Behind the scenes, the Jews run their show. I have my people behind me.

Speaker 1: When the German army reaches the River Volga, Hitler orders the capture of Stalingrad. His soldiers are now over a thousand miles from home and dangerously exposed. When his generals suggest a retreat, Hitler confronts them.
Speaker 0: Do you think that you can teach me what the man at the front is thinking? Where were you in the first World War? I demand from you the same toughness as from the frontline soldiers.
Speaker 1: Hitler orders no retreat. Three months later, the Red Army surrounds and traps a quarter of a million German soldiers in Stalingrad. On the home front, the people of Germany are preparing for Christmas. Some of the families of soldiers trapped in Stalingrad have letters brought out by air. Private Werner Bunerman.

Speaker 1: Five weeks later, 90,000 surviving German soldiers in Stalingrad surrender. 80,000 will die in Soviet captivity. Private Werner Bunerman is one of them. Speaker 25: We have replaced the men so that they can go to the front. Soldiers had mend these guns until now. It's very exciting. I like this much more than school. We are now on duty twenty four hours a day.

Speaker 1: Hitler's home homeland is under attack from the air. The Allies have begun firebombing Germany's cities. On July, '7 hundred British bombers target Hamburg. The firestorm is filmed by Hamburg Fireman, Hans Brunsvik.
Speaker 14: The fire is like a thunderstorm without rain. The heat is unbearable. I see people lying in the street. I tried to help them, but they're already dead. Hamburg streets are littered with bodies.
Some of them so burnt that they're only skeletons. Some are reduced to small heaps of ash.
Speaker 1: In Hamburg alone, more than 40,000 people are killed. Hitler's advisers want him to tour the ruins and raise the morale of his people. Minister of supplies, Albert Speer.
Speaker 12: I tried a few times to persuade Hitler. Goebbels had tried to put over the same idea, but in vain, and referred enviously to the conduct of Churchill. When I think of the propaganda value I could make of such a visit, he'd say.

Speaker 0: If the German people are no longer so strong and ready for sacrifice, that they will not stake their own blood on their existence, they deserve to pass away and be annihilated by another stronger power. If that is the case, I would not shed a tear for them.

Speaker 0: The German army suffered terribly during the First World War, and the German nation also suffered terribly, especially after the war. The crippling sanctions enacted by the victors with the Treaty of Versailles threw the country into serious depression. There was chaos on the streets and anarchy in the air. Communists seized many cities, including Berlin. While the great wealth of the nation was bled away by outrageous war reparations or sucked out by unscrupulous politicians, the average German was impoverished.
Inflation and unemployment soon followed and quickly destroyed all hope, all confidence, all morality. German cities were awash in pornography and prostitution, with even starving children being bought and sold like sex toys. Crime was rampant. Drunkenness and drug addiction were wide spread. Suicide rates soared.
The situation seemed hopeless, and then things changed dramatically. Soon after the National Socialists were elected, the German economy sprang to life. Unemployment was erased. Building boomed. Great projects began.
Confidence burst to life anew. After years of hunger, hardship, shame, and degradation, Germany became a happy, hopeful nation again. Germany's transformation from squalor and misery to a world superpower was so incredible that the 1930 8 Time Magazine named Adolf Hitler man of the year. To many, it seemed as if a new cultural, economic, and political renaissance for all of Europe was at hand. But others throughout the world, envious, powerful, but above all fearful, now work tonight and day to take Germany down.
The 2nd World War was the most deadly and destructive war in history. For 6 long years, the unequal struggle hitting Germany against the world continued, with first one side, then the other on top. But at last, overwhelmed, Germany was once more defeated. This time, however, the right was to be punished not with mere reparations, nor loss of land, nor with simple decadence and despair. No.
On this occasion, Germany was to be subjected to pure hatred, hatred of the most vicious, evil, and depraved kind imaginable. Millions upon millions of Germans, many of whom had nothing to do with the war, were systematically raped, tortured, slaughtered, and all in the most sadistic and sickening ways imaginable. What happened to Germany and its people during and after World War 2 has remained the darkest and best kept secret in world history until now. This film is based upon the book by author and historian Thomas Goodrich. Over the past 30 years, Goodrich has written about a number of controversial subjects.
The American civil war, Abraham Lincoln, the American Indian wars. But because World War 2 remains to this very day a pressing issue, the author feels this is by far his most urgent and timely book.

The words you will hear are those of the victims themselves and the witnesses to these atrocities. There will be no attempt here to present the viewpoint of the other side. Anyone seeking the victor's version of World War 2 need only watch any Hollywood movie, turn on the TV to any World War 2 documentary, or visit any public library. This film, like the book it is based upon, does not concern itself with what the Germans allegedly did to the world during the so called good war.

The crimes detailed herein are so vicious, so massive, and so evil that there are no words in the English language to accurately describe them. These are crimes that have been buried by the victors under a mountain of propaganda and laws for now over 70 years. This film is dedicated not only to the voiceless victims of the world's worst war, but also to future generations.
Our hope is that if enough good people in the world are willing to listen and learn what actually occurred to these innocent victims, men, women, the old, the young, the sick, animals. Then they someday soon will rise up as 1 and with united voice demand that nothing like this ever happens again to anyone, anywhere.
Speaker 0: During World War 2, Germany was subjected to an unrelenting assault from the sky. The Americans and British called it carpet bombing, saturation bombing, or unrestricted bombing. However, the German women and children who suffered through this nightmare called it by a simpler, more accurate name, terror bombing. The terror campaign was no accident. It was the secret plan of British prime minister Winston Churchill and air chief marshal Arthur Harris to unleash the full power of the Royal Air Force against German civilians, to inflict as much damage, to destroy as many homes, and to kill as many men, women, and children as possible.
Speaker 2: German cities will be subjected to an ordeal, the life of which has never been experienced. My country continuity, severity, or magnitude. To achieve this end, there are no lengths of violence to which we will not know.
Speaker 0: Churchill's violence was on full display during the night of July 24th, 1943. To the residents of Hamburg, a city of over 1,000,000 souls, the raid seemed initially like a standard bombing run. But soon, hundreds of enemy aircraft began raining down tons upon tons of high explosives on the very heart of Hamburg. Schools, churches, hospitals, homes, ancient art and architecture, all were blown to bits. The onslaught increased in fury with each succeeding wave of bombers, building minute by minute into a fiery, devastating c and all above was silent.
When the stunned survivors reemerge from their cellars later that night, they saw that their once beautiful city was now a smoldering ruin. The following day as firefighters from throughout Northern Germany battled the blaze, allied bombers suddenly appeared over Hamburg again. As planned, the Americans surprised not only the emergency workers, but columns of fleeing refugees as well. 1000 perished. The next night, RAF bombers returned.
In addition to the normal payload of high explosives, the British sent down tons of bombs to accelerate the fires. The resulting conflagration ignited a firestorm. Hurricane force winds created by the intense heat uprooted trees, ripped roofs from buildings, and sucked screaming victims into the raging inferno. Some who escaped the 150 mile per hour winds in the streets became mired in melting asphalt and quickly burst into flames. Those who had thrown themselves into the city's canals died of thermal radiation.
Then as they floated on the water's surface, they too ignited. In the center of the firestorm, temperatures reached 1500 degrees Fahrenheit. When the great mass of flames joined, they rose into a column 3 miles high. The attacks attacks against Hamburg continued unabated for another week. Soon, there was nothing left to destroy.
Appropriately dubbed by the allies as Operation Gomorrah, the raids had been a cold and calculated attempt to squirt Homburg and its people from the face of the earth. The plan succeeded. With 13 square miles of total destruction, the 750,000 homeless with an estimated 60 to 100000 dead, mostly women and children, Hamburg, for all intents and purposes, had ceased to exist. It was now clear to all that the allied air war against Germany had become a war of massacre and terror. The pattern was repeated time and again across Germany.
Hamburg, Berlin, Nuremberg, Darmstadt, Cologne, Stuttgart, Wurzburg, Munich, all German cities suffered the same. After first blasting a town to splinters, the Allied bombers quickly returned in the hope of catching survivors and rescuers in the open and igniting with firebombs all that remained. When the roaring bombers released their lethal cargo, a veritable rain of fire descended upon a targeted town. The thousands of small fires would join together to form 1 huge blaze, creating an intense vortex of wind and flames.
Speaker 3: I struggled to run against the wind in the middle of the street. We couldn't go on across because the asphalt had melted. There were people on the roadway, some already dead, some still lying alive, but stuck in the asphalt. They were on their hands and knees screaming.
Speaker 0: Some miraculously survived the inferno, reaching safety in rivers, canals, and parks. 1000 more, however, did not. When the raids finally ended and the firestorms began to recede, rescue workers rushed to free those still trapped underground. When would be rescuers finally broke through to buried bunkers, they often found scenes of unimaginable horror. In cellars suffering direct hits, walls were awash in blood, with bone, brains, and body parts splattered everywhere.
Rescuers who entered some bunkers found floors covered in up to a foot of greasy fat. The victims rendered down into a dark liquid. When word first filtered through to the outside world of the butchery being visited upon the women and children of Germany by the Royal Air Force, critics of these war crimes spoke out.
Speaker 4: The ruthless mass bombing of congested cities is as great a threat to the integrity of the human spirit as anything which has yet occurred on this planet. There is no military or political advantage which can justify this blasphemy.
Speaker 0: Although it was considered treasonous for members of the RAF to criticize the bombing campaign, the conscience of some was overwhelmed by the hell being unleashed upon Germany.
Speaker 5: There were people down there being fried to death in melted asphalt in the roads. They were being burnt up, and we were shuffling incendiary bombs into this holocaust. I felt terribly sorry for the people in that fire that I was helping to stoke up.
Speaker 0: As a symbol of the 3rd Reich and as the most obvious example of Germany's will to fight on, more bombs were devoted to Berlin than any other German city. It is another place, however, that has become most widely associated with the terror campaign waged against Germany, Dresden. Since Dresden had suffered only 2 small raids in the 5 years of war, many assumed that the city's salvation was due to its irreplaceable treasures, ornate palaces, world renowned museums and art galleries, its towering centuries old cathedrals. Others surmise that since Dresden had almost no heavy and what little it did have had no bearing on the war, the enemy simply did not deem the city a viable target. To some, the 26,000 allied POWs interned within the town appeared a more logical answer.
Still others thought that perhaps it was the estimated half 1000000 refugees jamming the city, many who had fled Soviet atrocities in the east that kept Dresden safe from bombing. Despite the dire situation as war closed in, Dresdeners were determined on the night of February 13th to enjoy an annual event known in America as Mardi Gras, but celebrated in Germany as fashion. Women and children, along with the few remaining men, many in costume, flooded the streets of Dresden to celebrate the event one last time before Germany's looming defeat. Just before 10 PM, sirens began wailing. There was no panic.
Most residents simply ignored the sounds. Even had there been any air raid shelters, few would have fled to them, for there seemed little doubt on this cold yet cheery night that like the 171 false alarms which had preceded it, this warning too would end in nothing. However, instead of the all clear siren, a short time later, Dresden heard another sound, a sound similar to a rolling earthquake. As wave after wave of RAF bombers appeared overhead, thousands of bombs tumbled down. Added to the normal payload of high explosives, 100 of 2 and 4 ton blockbuster bombs slammed into Dresden, obliterating entire neighborhoods.
Ancient cathedrals, palaces, and museums were reduced to rubble within seconds. At the railroad station, hundreds of individuals who have refused to leave their highly coveted train seats were blown to bits. At the huge indoor circus, spectators, performers, and animals were slaughtered by blast and hissing shrapnel. Well marked hospitals were targeted. In the streets, on the sidewalks, atop the bridges, over the Elbe River, costumed revelers with nowhere to run were slain by the 1,000.
Without let up, the massacre continued. And then, the roar above ceased. The explosion stopped and there was quiet once more. Several minutes later, the welcomed silence was broken by the even more welcome sound of the all clear signal. What had seemed an all night trial by fire had actually occurred in just under half an hour.
In those 30 minutes, however, one of the world's most beautiful architectural treasures had all but vanished. Fire brigades from surrounding towns arrived. Red Cross workers spread out to help the victims. Families screamed for missing loved ones. For many, the end of the world had seemingly arrived.
No one, however, was at all emotionally prepared for what came next. At 1:30 AM, the earth began to tremble once again. As more than a 1000 bombers roared overhead, a rain of death showered down on Dresden. In addition to explosives, the second wave bought tons of incendiary bombs. In a matter of minutes, the thousands of firebombs ignited the debris, and a racing furnace of flame erupted.
Unfamiliar with the bombing raids and firestorms, most Dresdeners reacted slowly. Many sought safety in cellars again, not realizing that the terrific heat would transform their havens into ovens. Others ran for safety through the streets, only to become mired in melting asphalt or sucked into the roaring furnace. Copper roofs melted, sending down streams of molten metal upon the people below. Throughout the night, the fiery hell that was Dresden claimed victims by the 1,000, by the tens of 1,000, and by the 100 of 1,000.
The following day when the fires had cooled, rescue workers went to work.
Speaker 6: Never would I have thought that death could come to so many people in so many different ways. Sometimes the victims looked like ordinary people, apparently peacefully sleeping. Faces of others were wracked with pain. Their bodies stripped almost naked by the tornado. There were wretched refugees from the east, clad only in rags, and people from the opera in all their finery.
Here the victims was a shapeless slab, there a layer of ashes. Across the city, along the streets wafted the unmistakable stench of decaying flesh.
Speaker 0: Indeed of all the hideous scents wafting through Dresden, sulfur, gas, sewage, the heavy stench of cooked flesh blanketed all. What were at first mistaken to be thousands of burnt logs scattered about the streets were soon found to be charred corpses glued to the surface, each reduced to roughly 3 feet.
Speaker 7: One shape I will never forget was the remains of what had apparently been a mother and a child. They had shriveled and charred into one kiss and had been stuck rigidly to the asphalt. They had just been priced up. The child must have been underneath the mother because you could still clearly see its shape with its mother's arms clasped around it.
Speaker 0: Aware that those in the old city would flee the flames to the open spaces, the RAF had hurled hundreds of high explosive bombs into the huge central park. Here, the slaughter was ghastly. Torn off limbs, mutilated torsos, heads blown from their bodies and hurled away. The nightmare was everywhere.
Speaker 8: I went down to my knees, trembled, and cried. Several women lay there with their bellies burst open, and one could see the babies for they were hanging half outside. Many of the babies were mutilated. Seems like that one I saw everywhere, and very slowly, one became numb. 1 acted like a zombie.
Speaker 0: The next morning, word spread that survivors should assemble in the city park. As the suffering mass climbed over the debris and the dead, they reached the park as well as the grassy banks of the elb. Some found missing loved ones. Most, however, did not. And then, shattering the calm came the sounds once more, the roar of engines overhead.
As US bombers began blasting the rubble to dust, American fighter planes zeroed in on the thousands of refugees at the park, along the river and in other open spaces. Even zoo animals, which had miraculously managed to survive the bombing raids, were strafed and slaughtered. A weeping zookeeper watched as an American pilot chased down and shot his last remaining giraffe.

Speaker 0: The decay of moral values in all areas of life, the period of deepest German degradation coincided exactly with the height of Jewish power in Germany. The Weimar Republic is the unofficial name that was popularized by Adolf Hitler of the German nation state that existed from November of nineteen eighteen to March of '19 '30 '3. It was named for the city of Weimar, Germany, where the constitutional assembly that established the new German Republic met. The official name of the republic was the German Reich. The Weimar Republic was established after Germany's loss in World War I.
Germany was forced under the Treaty of Versailles to accept full responsibility for the war and pay the debts of all the allied countries. Being forced to pay these massive debts devastated the German economy and skyrocketed inflation, unemployment, and suicide within Germany. At one point, 40 percent of Germans were unemployed and many were homeless. In 1932, the German suicide rate was more than three times that of Great Britain. And in one two year period, Germany had more suicides than there had been deaths of American soldiers in all of World War one.
The German currency became the most worthless currency in Europe. A loaf of bread in Berlin that cost around a hundred and 60 German marks at the end of nineteen twenty two cost 200,000,000,000 German marks by late nineteen twenty three. The German people's life savings and purchasing power had melted away over the course of a few months. With a single US dollar being worth 4,200,000,000,000.0 German marks by November of nineteen twenty three, foreign currencies had much greater buying power in Germany. So naturally, foreigners flocked to Germany to take advantage of the cheap prices.
With these foreigners arriving en masse, Germans desperate for work turned to one of the primary industries the foreigners flocked to Germany for: the sex industry. Germans began flocking to urban hubs in search of work, and no urban hub was more popular than Berlin. Prostitution in Berlin wasn't explicitly legal, but existed in a kind of legal gray area where certain aspects of the sex trade were regulated while others remained unregulated. However, enforcement of any laws restricting prostitution were lax to nonexistent. On any given night, up to 100,000 prostitutes would line the streets of Berlin.
Every type of prostitute was available. Midgets, pregnant prostitutes who lined up on the street according to how pregnant they were, prostitutes that purposely tried to be ugly, prostitutes with acid scarred faces, prostitutes with missing limbs, mother and daughter prostitute pairs, dominatrixes, even hunchback prostitutes, Interracial, intergenerational, forced or abusive sex acts were all available for the right price. There was also a large male prostitution industry and homosexual men from across Europe came to Germany to pay for homosexual sex. And unlike most cities, Berlin boasted having not a single red light district, but multiple. Child prostitutes were bought and sold in Weimar Berlin in a booming industry.
Advertisements for child prostitutes were even placed in German magazines and newspapers. A person could order a child, or any other type of prostitute for that matter, over the phone and have them a few short minutes later. British historian Sir Arthur Bryant describes throngs of child prostitutes outside the doors of the great Berlin hotels and restaurants. Bryant adds, quote, most of them, the nightclubs and vice resorts, were owned and managed by Jews, and it was the Jews among the promoters of this trade who were remembered in the after years. End quote.
There were homosexual, lesbian and even transsexual bars where, occasionally, public masturbation and orgies took place. These homosexual bars weren't isolated or rare one off outliers either. There were over 50 lesbian bars in Berlin and around 100 homosexual bars total. Drag shows and cross dressing were commonplace in these bars. Sexual acts involving torture or acts bringing a victim close to death or even, in some instances, to death were performed in Weimar, Germany, called Lustmord.
As often happens when violent sexual perversions arise, so too do serial killers playing out their fetishes in reality. I refuse to name serial killers in my videos because I think it glorifies them, but you can look them up for yourself. German newspapers devoted entire sections to the violent sexual crimes of these serial killers and fictionalized accounts of murders sold very well on German bookstands. Serial killers had a romanticized lore around them, very similar to what we see in western society today. Alongside prostitution and homosexual clubs, porn also enjoyed a golden age during the Weimar Republic.
Like prostitution, porn existed in a kind of legal gray area where enforcement of any regulations on it were lax to nonexistent. Images could be purchased under the counter at most street media kiosks. According to one report, there were as many as 30 homosexual publications on any given Berlin media kiosk. Above all, pornography featuring models who bore a resemblance to the biggest stars of the day, such as Marlene Dietrich or Greta Garbo, were in the highest demand. Fashion began to blur the lines between masculine and feminine.
The female image began to experiment with a more strong willed, independent tone and some women began to dress in masculine clothing. Similarly, male fashion began to experiment with feminization and cross dressing amongst men began to rise. Berlin's women began to question the need for a man in their lives and many Berlin women had no desire to start or raise a family. Drug use in the Weimar Republic also ran rampant, and Berlin gained a reputation as a drug dealing hub around Germany and Europe. Cocaine was the most popular drug in the Weimar Republic and only required a simple prescription from a doctor.
That said, opium morphine and amphetamines were all readily available and extensively used as well. The drug usage was so pervasive there was even experimentation with using drugs for scientific sexual purposes. One of the chief scientists behind this experimentation with sex was a man named Magnus Hirschfeld. Magnus Hirschfeld was a homosexual Jew and one of the thought leaders behind the sexual debauchery overtaking Berlin. Hirschfeld had founded political organizations that fought for the rights of homosexuals in Germany well before the Weimar era and as far back as 1896.
He led the campaign to overturn a statute of German law called Paragraph 175 which forbid homosexuality in Germany. Hirschfeld would later go on to write a 1914 book called The Homosexuality of Men and Women in which he attempted to prove homosexuality occurred in every society around the world. Hirschfeld's crowning achievement of debauchery, however, occurred in July of nineteen nineteen when he opened the Institute of Sexual Research in Berlin. The institute's stated purpose was to establish the sexual sciences and establish the sexual sciences the institute did. It subconsciously undermines the idea that society should strive for perfection and instead is a call to accept society's more heinous elements.
This repulsive architecture is, in my view, anti authoritarian and destructive to social norms. Forty eight percent of lawyers were Jews. And 35% of dentists were Jews. And finally, one last note on the Jews of the Weimar Republic. Many Weimar Jews actively tried to conceal their Jewish identity and even went so far as bragging to other Jews when Gentiles were unable to identify them. This is one of the reasons that, to this day, it's somewhat difficult to identify who the Jews of the Weimar Republic were.
What this means is that, although the identity of every Jew I listed is verified, there are undoubtedly other prominent and non prominent Jews I was unable to identify. The provided list should not be viewed as wholly representative of the Jewish influence within Weimar Germany. But even just considering the list provided, you can see the Jewish influence was substantial for a race of people comprising less than 1% of the total German population. He does not realize that the freedom to speak means nothing when the words that shape opinion are controlled by others. Germany's path has been different.
Here, loyalty has traditionally centered on the person of the monarch, on the army, on the state. The German spirit resisted the corruption that infected the West. The peasantry remained healthy. The intellectual class remained German. When industry grew here, there existed the possibility that workers might unite with traditional German institutions rather than against them.
This possibility represented a mortal threat to Sultan interests. If German workers had joined hands with German nationalists, if the energy of the industrial masses had been directed towards strengthening the nation rather than tearing it apart, then Germany would have become unconquerable. This is precisely what had to be prevented. And so, the workers' movement was captured. The working class had legitimate grievances.
Their labor built the factories and generated the wealth, yet they lived in poverty while others prospered. A genuine workers' movement rooted in love of nation and people could have transformed Germany for the better. Instead, the movement was steered in a different direction. It was given an international character. Workers were taught to see themselves not as Germans first, but as members of a global class whose interests conflicted with their own nation.
They were taught that patriotism was a trick used by their oppressors. Consider how perfectly this served certain purposes. A German worker who loves his country will fight to strengthen it. A German worker who has been taught to despise his country will fight to weaken it. The same energy directed toward opposite ends and the doctrine they were given.
This Marxism, what does it actually teach? That property itself is theft, that the individual has no right to the fruits of his own labor, that everything must be held in common, controlled by those who claim to speak for the collective. What honest German could accept such a doctrine? What productive citizen could believe that his own efforts entitle him to nothing? The skilled worker, the engineer, the farmer who improves his land, they know in their bones that this theory is false.
And so the intellectual class was driven away from the workers' movement. The people who might have provided real leadership were replaced by professional agitators whose loyalty lay elsewhere. Today we see the results of this long campaign. Look at Russia. There you can witness the final destination of this power.
A once great civilization reduced to chaos, churches plundered, their treasures vanished without trace, the productive classes destroyed, millions starving while those in power live in luxury, An entire nation transformed into a colony to be exploited, and the same forces are at work here in Germany. Our economy deteriorates daily. Prices rise while wages buy less. Honest Germans struggle to feed their families while speculators grow rich from the nation's misery. The stock exchange celebrates while the factory worker despairs.
Political life has become a circus. Those who should protect German interests instead grovel before foreign powers. We are told to be patient, to accept our humiliation, to trust that goodwill from abroad will save us. Where is this goodwill? I see only contempt.

They have seen how they are used as tools in conflicts they do not understand. They have watched their living standards fall while they are told that their suffering serves a higher purpose. The promise that foreign nations would treat us fairly if we only disarmed. If we only paid, if we only submitted, this promise has been exposed as hollow. We disarmed, they remained armed, we paid, they demanded more.
We submitted, they despised us for it. Throughout Germany, men and women are beginning to ask different questions. They are beginning to see that the path they were told to follow leads only to ruin. They are searching for a new direction. This awakening terrifies those who benefit from German weakness.
They see the old methods of control failing. They see a population that can no longer be managed with worn out phrases, and they know that if this awakening continues, their position is doomed. What is the idea that threatens them so greatly? It is simply this, that the German nation must become a genuine communicator. That Germans of all stations, workers and managers, farmers and scholars, must recognize their common bond and work together for common goals.
That the welfare of the nation must take precedence over the profits of speculators and the theories of internationalists. This idea is called many things by those who oppose it. They call it reaction. They call it extremism. They call it dangerous.
I call it common sense. What is socialism? Properly understood. It is the recognition that we rise or fall together, that the prosperity of one German depends on the prosperity of all Germans, that a nation cannot thrive when millions of its people live in misery. The man who puts his people above himself, who sees Germany's future as more important than his personal comfort, who would sacrifice his own interests for the nation, that man understands true socialism.
And what is nationalism? It is the recognition that the German people possess a unique character, a unique heritage, a unique destiny, that we have no obligation to dissolve ourselves into some abstract humanity, that our duty is to our own people first. These two ideas, national and social, are not opposites. They belong together. A movement that is truly national will care for all its people.
A movement that is truly social will strengthen the nation that makes community possible. The struggle ahead will be difficult. Those who have thrived on German weakness will not surrender their position. Willingly, they control powerful instruments, the press that shapes opinion, the financial systems that control commerce, the international networks that can pressure any nation that defies them. They are already working to silence opposition.
Laws are passed in the name of protecting the Republic that are actually designed to protect those who are destroying the Republic. Anyone who speaks uncomfortable truths is labeled a criminal, an extremist, a threat to public order. We have experienced this ourselves. For three years we have spoken out, and for three years we have been attacked, slandered, and persecuted. Some of our members have seen the inside of prison cells, but we do not retreat.
We cannot retreat. We see too clearly what awaits Germany if the current path continues. We would rather face persecution for speaking truth than enjoy comfort through cowardly silence. I speak now especially to those who are young. The old parties offer you speeches.
They will train you to talk, to debate, to participate in their endless parliamentary games. They offer you a seat at a table where nothing is ever decided. We offer you something different. We offer you struggle. We offer you sacrifice.
We offer you the chance to be part of something greater than yourself. Yes, you will be hated. The comfortable, the complacent, the corrupt, they will despise you for threatening their position. You will be called names. You will be attacked in the press.
Some of you may face violence, but consider this, if our enemies hate you at 18 or 19, you have already achieved what many men never achieve in a lifetime. You have shown that you matter. Dass an ihm alle die Menschen, die im großen Rednerwerk unserer nationalen Arbeit tätig sind, zueinander finden und gegenseitig sich einmal im Jahr wieder die Hände reichern, in der Erkenntnis, dass nichts geschehen könnte, wenn nicht alle ihren Teil der Leistung und der Arbeit dabei vollbringen. Deutsches Volk, besinne ich auf dich selbst, Mein Führer, das deutsche Volk lobt Ihnen, in unerschütterlicher Treue in diesem Kampfe hinter Ihnen zu stehen und komme, was kommen mag, die deutsche Ehre, die deutsche gleiche Berechtigung und den Frieden Europas zu verteidigen. Und ich bin der Meinung, die anderen Staatsanleihen tätigen gut, wenn sie auch ihre eigenen Aufgaben lösen wollten. Ich erklärte, das deutsche Volk hat nur einen Wunsch, nach seiner Person selig werden zu können. Sie sollen sich in Ruhe lassen. Wir müssen uns nicht Ihre Angelegenheiten. Sie sollen sich nicht in die untere mischen.
Der Völkerstreit oder Hass untereinander, er wird gepflegt von ganz bestimmten Interessenten. Es ist eine kleine, wurzelllose, internationale Clique, die die Völker gegeneinander hetzt, die nicht will, dass sie zur Ruhe kommen. Es sind das die Menschen, die überall und nirgends zu Hause sind, die nirgends einen Boden haben, auf den sie gewachsen sind, sondern die heute in Berlin leben, morgen genauso gut in Brüssel sein können, übermorgen in Paris oder mit in Prag Aber das Volk kann ihnen ja nicht nachfolgen. Das Volk ist ja gekettet an seinen Boden, ist ja gekettet an seine Heimat, ist ja gebunden an die Lebensmöglichkeiten
Speaker 3: die ganze Nation hier Geldpflicht erfüllt, dann wird damit zum ersten Mal vielleicht in der deutschen Geschichte der ganzen Welt klar, dass sie nun anders mit uns verkehren muss. Dass er nicht mehr hoffen kann auf unsere Uneinigkeit und das Splittraum, sondern dass ich nicht abfinden muss mit dem, was nun da ist, nämlich mit dem deutschen Volk.

Speaker 3: sie wieder glauben, es ablehnen zu können oder wieder mit ihren symbolischen Gästen und so weiter kommen, anständig genug sein, ihrerseits doch auch einmal die Völker zu befragen.
Speaker 0: Wir sind doch wieder ein so anständiges Volk geworden. Wir sind doch jetzt wieder ein so fleißiges und tatkräftiges Volk geworden. Was schaffen wir jetzt nicht wieder in Deutschland? Was haben wir nicht für Aufgaben? Man hat uns die ganzen Jahre schon eingeredet, dass der Deutsche sowieso nicht ganz gleichgültig sei den anderen Völkern in der Welt.
Was haben wir heute für Aufgaben? Was für gewaltige Werke bauen wir? Wir bauen heute die schönsten Straßen, gewaltige Anlagen industrieller Art, Neuerfindungen haben wir gemacht, ungeheure Wohnhauskolonien, die werden entstehen und sind bereits entstanden. Was wird nicht überall gearbeitet, auf allen Gebieten? Wir haben bewiesen in diesen 3 Jahren, dass wir ein Volk sind, das bestehen kann von den anderen.
Darum bitte ich Ihnen deutsches Volk. Darüber geht nun dein Urteil ab. Bin, dass ich gearbeitet habe, dass ich nicht in diesen Jahren für dich eingesetzt habe, dass ich anständig meine Zeit verwendet habe im Dienste meines Volkes. Gibt du jetzt eine Stimme ab? Wenn ja, dann tritt für mich ein, so wie ich für dich eingeprägt habe.
Speaker 4: Ich richte diesen Appell an alle unsere Volksgenossen, die an unseren Staat und an unser Reich loben. Würdest du allein stehen, was wehrst du denn auf dieser Welt? Wenn dein Gehalt der Lohn, wo er große Gemeinschaft bist, jedem eiseren Mitfahrer. Dankst Du das? Sage mir nicht, ja, Du liest mein Holzgerostet.
Vielleicht in der Zeitung, eine Frau hat Selbstmord verübt. Mit 2 oder 3 Kindern, mein lieber Volksgenosse. Das sind nicht die schlechtesten Menschen. Und zweitens, das ist kein leichteren Schluss. Und wenn der andere wieder sagt, wissen Sie, würde ja ganz gerne etwas geben, aber mein Magen, diese Eintopf, dieser Eintopf Sonntag, ich hab sowieso dauernd Schwierigkeiten und so weiter.
Es ist auch unangenehm und ich verstehe das überhaupt nicht und ich gebe 10 Pfennig so her, aber man soll mir so endlich Nein, mein lieber Freund, wir haben das alles mit angesetzt. Nicht nur, dass dieser von dir gar nicht begriffene Eintopfsonntag ungefähr 30000000 Mark eingebracht hat und Du gar nicht ausrechnen kannst, wie viel Millionen Menschen wir damit ein warmes Bitterkeit geben konnten und wie viele kleine Kinder wir damit erhalten konnten. Das kapierst Du vielleicht nicht, mein Volksgenossen. Aber, das können wir dir sagen, gerade dir, der Du das nicht kapierst, ist es nützlich, wenn wir dich auf diese Weise etwas wenigstens zu deinem Volk zurückführen, zu Millionen deiner Volksknoten, die glücklich wären, wenn sie nur den ganzen Winter über den Eindruck hätten, den Du einmal vielleicht zu dir hergeholt hast. Und ich muss hier auch aussprechen, dass alle die, die für diesen Appell kein Verständnis haben, in meinen Augen nur traurige, traurige Nutznießer Sende in unserem Volk.
Denn an der gemeinsamen Arbeit, an der von allen zu verteidigenden Sicherheit des Reiches darf man sich gebären sie. Aber gemeinsame Opfer wollen Sie nicht bringen.
Speaker 1: Kauf gegen den Marxismus wurde damals zum ersten Mal zu einem Kampfziel erhoben.

Speaker 0: Sie mögen ein Diktat als Diktat uns aufoktroyieren. Es gibt keinen besseren Galanten für den Frieden als die fanatische Einheit der deutschen Nation. Wir wollen ihr nichts. Wir wollen nichts als unsere Ruhe und unseren Frieden, arbeiten zu können. Eine große Zeit ist angebrochen Und wir sind nur ihre liebenden Zeugen, vollzieht sich in Deutschland, die sich von all den ähnlichen früheren Vorgängen solcher Art unterscheidet durch die unerhörte Disziplin und Planmäßigkeit ihrer Durchführung.
Wenn das Heer der Massenträger Nation ist, dann müsst ihr sein, sind seit dem Tage vergangen, an dem wir damals als kleine und unbekannte Bewegung zum ersten Mal in diesem Saal, wo die Öffentlichkeit und damit vor das deutsche Volk getreten sind. Ich weiß, dass damals viele die Aussichtslosigkeit dieser Bewegung beurteilten nach dem Maß ihrer damaligen Größe und dem Maß der Größe der Aufgaben, die gestellt waren. Sie alle hatten 1 nicht erkannt, dass eine solche Bewegung natürlich Das muss die Welt wissen. Deutschland wird friedliebend sein, wie ein Volk friedliebend sein kann, wenn diesem deutschen Volk nicht an seine Ehre getastet wird.
Speaker 4: Wenn wir an diesem Tage einen Rückblick halten, dann kann er nicht ändern im Jahre 33, sondern er muss zurückschweifen. Dieser dreißigste Januar ist uns nicht als ein Geschenk des Himmels in der Schoß gefallen, sondern er ist blutig schwer und bitter erkämpft worden. Und diese Zeit des Kampfes, sie hat uns zusammengefügt. Sie hat Führer und Gefolgschaft sich gegenseitig verstehen und kennenlernen lassen, weil wir Opfer bringen konnten und bringen wollten. Deshalb ist dieses Deutschland gekommen.
Wenn also 1 uns erklärt, auch die Zukunft wird wohl Opfer fordern. Ja, weil der Nationalsozialismus ist keine Lehre der Trägheit, sondern eine Lehre des Kampfes. Der Nationalsozialismus ist keine Lehre des Glücks, des Zufalls, sondern eine Lehre der Arbeit, eine Lehre des Ringens und damit auch eine Lehre der Opfer.
Speaker 0: Ich weiß,
Speaker 1: alles, was ihr seid, seid ihr durch mich und alles, was
Speaker 0: und neben- beieinanderstehen. Wir haben nicht ihre Kolonien. Wir haben nicht alle die Möglichkeiten internationaler Weltverbindungen, die diesen Staaten und Feldern zu eigen sind. Wir müssen unser Reich, indem wir so beengt sind und so wenig Lebensvoraussetzungen besitzen, sorgfältig überlegt bearbeiten und bewirtschaften. Wir kommen ohne Plan nicht aus.
Das Volk allein ist unser Herr.
Speaker 1: Und diesem Volk Im Verkehr beginnen wir nunmehr neue Schlagader zu bauen. Wir haben 4 Jahre damals uns ausgebeten und wollen diese 4 Jahre nützen zum Nutzen und Frommen unseres deutschen Volkes und damit wohl in erster Linie für den deutschen Arbeiter. Deutschland hat abgerüstet. Es hat alle in dem Friedensvertrag auferlegte Verpflichtungen weit über die Grenzen jeder Billigkeit, ja jeder Vernunft hinaus erfüllt. Seine Armee beträgt 100000 Mann.
Die Stärken und die Art der Polizei sind international geregelt. Die in den Tagen der Revolution aufgestellte Hilfspolizei hat ausschließlich pulsche Charakter. Sie musste in den kritischen Tagen des Umsturzes den neuen Regiment zunächst den politisch als unsicher vermuteten Teil der anderen Polizei ersetzen. Deutschland wäre auch ohne Weiteres bereit, seine gesamte militärische Einrichtung überhaupt aufzulösen und den kleinen Rest der ihm verbliebenen Waffenwirtschaft stören, wenn die anliegenden Nationen ebenso rechtlos das Kleid ruhen.
Speaker 0: Bedenken Sie, als ich in diesen Januartagen und Februar Tagen 1933 in die Reichskanzlei einzog, da stand ein Gebiet von der Größe Thüringens vor der Zwangsversteigerung. Hunderttausende an Bauernhöfen, die sollten damals unter den Hammer kommen. Die haben das abgestoppt und darüber hinaus. Ich glaube, der deutsche Bauer ist heute wieder auf einen festen Boden gekommen. Und so ist es auch mit dem deutschen Arbeiter.
7000000 Erwerbslose, sie sind jetzt zusammengesotten. Unter eineinhalb Millionen. Das haben unsere Gegner nicht für möglich gehalten und es ist doch möglich geworden. Wir wollen friedlich eine Gemeinschaft bilden, wollen niemandem etwas zu Leide ruhen. Ihr seid mir verpflichtet, dafür zu sorgen, dass wenn dieser nächste Appell nach 10 Jahren hier stattfindet, wir wieder vor dem ganzen deutschen Volk bekennen können.
Speaker 1: Am dreißigsten Januar
Speaker 0: sind in Deutschland die Würfel gefallen. Und ich glaube nicht, dass die Gegner, die damals Es soll, und dies ist unser unbändiger Wille und unser niemals mehr abzuändern Entschluss. Es soll aber aus diesen Opfern heraus bei uns die Entschlossenheit kommen, der einst mit den Verantwortlichen an diesen Opfern ein unerbittliches Gericht zu halten. Unser deutsches Vaterland, unser deutsches Volk, unser heiles Reich der Zukunft, zum ersten Mal seid ihr in dieser Form zum Appell vor mir und damit vor dem ganzen deutschen Volke angetreten. Die repräsentiert eine große Idee.
Und wir wissen, dass für Millionen unserer Volksgenossen die Arbeit nicht mehr ein trennender Begrüßung sein wird, sondern ein alle gemeinsam Verbinderter und das insbesondere keiner mehr dann in Deutschland leben wird, der in der Arbeit der Faust Minderes sehen wird als in irgendeiner anderen Arbeit. Durch eure Schule wird die ganze Nation gehen. Die Zeit wird kommen, da kein Deutscher hineinwachsen kann in die Gemeinschaft dieses Volkes, der nicht erst zu eure Gemeinschaft gegangen ist. Und ihr werdet wissen, in diesem Augenblick seht euch nicht die Augen der Hunderttausende in Nürnberg, sondern in dem Augenblick seht euch zum ersten Mal Deutschland. Und ich weiß, Deutscher Yoga, nach einem Jahr kann ich euch hier wieder begrüßen.
Und wir möchten nun, dass ihr deutsche Jungens und deutsche Mädchen in euch all das aufnehmen, was wir dereins uns von Deutschland erhoffen. Wir wollen ein Volk sein und ihr, meine Jugend, soll dieses Volk nun lernen. Wir wollen einst keine Klassen und Stände mehr sehen und ihr dürft sie in euch schon nicht ertlos werden lassen. Wir wollen einst ein Reich sehen, und ihr müsst euch schon dafür erziehen. Mutig zugleich.
Wir wollen, dass dieses Volk einst nicht verweillicht wird, sondern dass es hart sein kann, und ihr müsst euch in der Jugend dafür stehlen. Ihr müsst lernen, Entbehrungen auf euch zu nehmen, ohne jeweils zusammenzubrechen. Denn was wir auch heute schaffen und was wir tun, wir werden vergehen, aber in euch wird Deutschland weiterleben. Und wenn von uns nichts mehr übrig sein wird, dann werdet ihr die Fahne, die wir einst aus dem Nichts hochgezogen haben, in euren Fäusten halten müssen. Und ich weiß, das kann nicht anders sein, denn ihr seid Fleisch von unserem Fleisch und Blut, von unserem Blut.
Und im euren jungen Gehirn brennt derselbe Geist, der uns beherrscht. Ihr könnt nicht anders sein als mit uns verbunden. So wie in den Jahren, die hinter uns liegen. Dann wird vor Trommel die Trommel kommen, vor Fahnen die fahre, dann wird vor Gruppe Gruppe stoßen, zum Gau der Sorgen, so viel Opfern und so viel Not erkannt und errungen werden musste. Unserer eisigen Bewegung gekommen sei.
Sie steht fest, so wie dieser Block hier. Und sie wird in Deutschland durch nichts zerbrochen.
Speaker 2: Der sechste Parteitag der Bewegung geht zu Ende. Was für Millionen Deutsche, die außerhalb unserer Laien stehen, vielleicht nur als imposantestes Schauspiel politischer Machtentfaltung gewertet wird, war für die Hunderttausende der Kämpfer unendlich mehr. Das große persönliche und geistige Treffen der alten Streiter und Kampfgenossen, und vielleicht hat mancher unter Ihnen trotz der zwingenden Groß artigkeit dieser Herrscher unserer Partei sich wehmütigen Herzens zurückbesonnen in jene Tage, da es noch schwer war, Nationalsozialist zu sein.
Speaker 0: Als unsere Partei gerade 7 Mann hoch war, sprach sie schon 2 Grundsätze aus. Erstens, sie wollte eine wahrhaftige Weltanschauungspartei sein. Und zweitens, sie wollte daher kompromisslos die einzige Macht und alleinige Macht in Deutschland. Wir mussten als Partei in der Minorität bleiben, weil wir die wertvollsten Elemente des Kampfes und des Opfersinns in der Nation mobilisierten, die zu allen Zeiten nicht die Mehrheit, sondern die Minderheit ausgemacht haben. Und weil dieser beste Rassenwert der deutschen Nation in 1 stolze Selbsteinschätzung mutig und kühn die Führung des Reiches und Volkes fordernde, hat das Volk sich in immer größerer Zahl dieser Führung angeschlossen und und stellt.
Das deutsche Volk ist glücklich in dem Bewusstsein, dass die ehelige Fluchterscheinungen nunmehr endgültig abgelöst wurde von einem ruhenden Pol. Der sich als Träger seines besten Blutes fühlen Es wird stets nur ein Teil 1 Volkes aus wirklich aktiven Kämpfern bestehen. Und Ihnen wird mehr gefordert als von den Millionen der übrigen Volksgenossen. Für Sie genügt nicht die bloße Einst haben unsere Gegner dafür gesorgt, dass vor Verbot und Verfolgungswellen von Zeit zu Zeit die Bewegung wieder ausgekämmt wurde von dem leichten Zeug, das sie für JA einzufinden begann. Heute Entmusterung halten und abstoßen, was sich als schlecht erwiesen hat und deshalb innerlich nicht zu uns gehört.
Es ist unser Wunsch und Wille, dass dieser Staat und dieses Reich bestehen sollen in den kommenden Jahrtausenden. Wir können glücklich sein zu wissen, dass diese Zukunft restlos uns gehört. Wenn die älteren Jahrgänge noch wanken werden könnten, die Jugend ist uns Nur dann, wenn wir in der Partei durch unser aller Zutun die höchste Verkörperung des nationalsozialistischen Gedankens und Wesens verwirklichen, wird sie eine ewige und unzerstörbare Säule des deutschen Volkes und Reiche sein, dann gehen einst neben die herrliche, ruhmreiche Armee, dem alten, stolzen Waffenträger unseres Volkes, die nicht minder traditionsgefestigte politische Führung der Partei treten. Und dann werden diese beiden Einrichtungen gemeinsam den deutschen Menschen erziehen und festigen und auf ihren Schulden tragen, In dieser Stunde verlassen schon wieder Zehntausende von Parteigenossen die Stadt. Während aber die einen noch von der Erinnerung zehren, während andere schon wieder beginnen Was ist unser heutiges Deutschland?
Nicht wieder schön und herrlich, indem ich euch überblicke, weiß ich, mein Liebenskampf ist nicht umsonst gekämpft. Ihr werdet treu sein wie jemals das deutsche Treue sein konnten. Immer wieder wird eine neue Jugend antreten in dieser Stadt hier. Ich sehe das von ihren Jahrhunderten, immer wieder antreten und wird immer schöner sein, immer kraftvoller sein und wird immer gesünder sein und wird immer mehr Hoffnung bietenden lebenden Geschlechtern auf die Zukunft. Ich bin nicht der Klagende, ich bin nur der Warner.
Ich bin nicht der Fürchtende, sondern ich bin nur der Vorbereitende. Ich zittere nicht vor 1 Stunde irgendeine Entscheidung, aber ich will sie sehen und ich will stark sein. Ich will die Füße fest in unserer Erde stemmen, dem Ansturm nicht zu erliegen. Und ihr werdet neben mir stehen, wenn diese Stunde jemals kommen sollte. Wir werden vor mir nehmen und zeichnen und hinter mir stehen.
Und wir werden in unteren Zeichen wieder singen. Konnten erbliche Menschen überhaupt mehr leisten, als wir geleistet hatten. Wir wollen nur den Frieden. Wir haben den Krieg kennengelernt. Wir wollen den Völkern uns gerne die Hand geben, wollen mit ihnen zusammenarbeiten.
Wir haben keine Feindschaft gegen sie,
Speaker 5: Wir sind aber eine stark postworrene Gemeinschaft, mögen auch die anderen uns auf unserem See in Ruhe lassen. Das ist der einzige Forbehalg, den wir über unsere Friedenfliebe aufstellen müssen. Keines etwas zu Leide tun

Speaker 0: Welcome back. Today, we're joined by an excellent guest, Max Otte, an economist, former professor, best selling author, investment manager and a politician who also came in second in the twenty twenty two German presidential election. So thank you. We haven't spoken for a few months. It's good to see you again.
Speaker 1: Yeah. Good to see you again, professor Diesen. I want to correct one thing. I'm not a politician. I'm a political activist at best.
So I ran for president. I got second most votes, but that was my share. I'm not an active politician, and I will not be.
Speaker 0: Fair enough. No. I I I can understand the sentiment. I also, at one point, attempted to flirt a bit with politics, but for many reasons, yeah, that's not happening again. So I the reason I really wanted to speak with you today is, well, many things.
I actually want to discuss Spengler a little bit with you as well. But first, I wanted to discuss what is going on in Germany because we see that the alternative for Deutschland, IFD, a political party only established in 2013, so very young, is now the most popular political party in the polls. And Mertz seemingly has become the most unpopular leader in Europe. So what is that's actually happening in Germany? How how can we understand this development?
Speaker 1: Actually, Mertz seems to be the most unpopular leader in the world, in the whole world. That's how I read some of the surveys. Basically, Germany is continuing on its downward self destructive path as it has been since 2015 or 2011 really, when we started to go green full scale and dismantle our own energy. So, the cabinets, Merkel, and then Scholz, and now Mertz are basically doing all the same. And it so you can see, and you're an IR theorist, that the international system really determines a lot of the outcomes of policy in Germany because the international factors are so strong.
There's very strong forces that want German industry dismantled or diminished, relocate them to The US, and so on and so forth. What happened with Mertz is that the CDU got a solid, I think around 28, 30% in the last election because people were still having hope that Mertz who coined himself Mr. Small Business or Mr. Mittelstand for most of his career would actually turn things around. I never had any of such hope.
I had very low expectations, which he managed to be downward by a large amount. So my very low expectations were severely underbidden, But quite a few people thought, well, if get a conservative chancellor, then things will turn around. But of course, they didn't. He didn't do a thing about a change in energy policy, he didn't do a chain a thing about a change in migration, and he didn't change foreign policy. We can cover that a little more deeply in a second.
The only thing he is trying to change is put more burdens on pensioners and the working population. The pension level is being lowered to 48% of the last average wage, so that's what he's I mean, you see who he is. He's been a servant and a lobbyist all his life. I mean, he made very good money representing big companies. Of course, for a lengthy period also, he was the chairman of BlackRock for for Germany, which is basically a representative in the sales position.
I mean, can go in and say I'm the chairman of BlackRock and help in the sale of German industry. He's not making any decisions there. And if you follow his career, he's been a lobbyist. His grandfather was involved with the Nazis in his hometown. We come from the same same region, by the way.
So I followed him for a long time, and for a while he was my chairman in the Atlantic Bricker, a German US friendship organization. So he's basically continuing everything that red green, and red black and black green before did. So you can see that there's no change, that there's only one alternative in Germany. That's the alternative for Germany after the alliance dismantled through a lot of tactical and strategic mistakes. There's only the alternative and all other parties, and that's why the alternative is gaining.
Speaker 0: And we we saw in the in the foreign policy realm a huge development now. That is we already know that well, already, if you go back to 2016, Obama said that The US would pivot to Asia. That means if you pivot to somewhere, you have to pivot away from somewhere. And everyone kind of understood this will be Europe. Well, we're a decade into this, and now we see The US has changed its national security strategy, clearly deprioritizing Europe down to a, you know, distant third.
And now we have the troop well, partial troop withdrawal from Germany. I think Germany has about 35,000 American troops. 5,000 of those are being pulled out. What what what does this mean, you think, for for Germany and the wider its position in this transatlantic partnership?
Speaker 1: Unfortunately, nothing much in the in the underlying structure. I mean, we did have about 200,000 troops during the Cold War, 200,000 US troops. Now it's 40, then 35, maybe 30. But the main operational logistical hubs like the Ramstein Airbase, which are without which the war in Iran would not really be possible, maybe some Italian bases. So those bases, of course, will continue, and The US presence will continue.
So if The US says we deemphasize Europe, it's basically putting the burden of the Empire on the the allies. This is what I predicted to some extent in my 2019 book, Weltsus Temkrecht, where I predicted a new Cold War with two blocks, basically, the Chinese block and an American block, and some semi sovereign centers like Turkey or Iran. Russia is sovereign, but not a world power, and by every measure, by some measures, but by no means by all measures. So basically, we see the total integration of Europe into The US sphere. We see a shifting of burdens on Europe to continue a war that will harm Europe and is harming Europe in immeasurable ways.
So, basically, it's a smart move if you are a Mandarin of the Empire, and because Europe, if you think about Markkostam and Mertz, they are bent on continuing this war with Russia. And so Europe is moving closer to the target zone and to to strikes within Europe from Russia by Russia because we're now striking deep inside Russia. So pivoting away from Europe means Europe is still being exploited economically immensely, be it the tech the tech companies, be it weapons that are being produced in in The US and being bought by Europeans, being in a manner many other spheres. Europe is basically, yeah, an economic colony, a data colony. Mean, and among all things, the three key European leaders tried to position Europe as independent by continuing a US war and continuing the division of Europe, which is crazy, but it's very smart imperial strategy.
Speaker 0: Yeah. Well, that's another way The US has to adjust to this new distribution of power, that it it doesn't have this well, it doesn't occupy this hegemonic position anymore. And one gets the impression it's working hard to outsource its war, so the Ukrainians and increasingly now the Europeans will fight and come and will weaken Russia. In The Middle East, one gets the impression that it's it's being attempted to be outsourced partially at least to the Gulf States, and you can see a similar arrangement appearing in East Asia. But with the war on Russia, though, as this this is, you know, this is where the Europeans are now playing a frontline position, it seems like we're moving into a very dangerous area that is Germany as well as other European countries, including well, many of them, they are they're now very openly setting their objective of mass producing these long range drones and missiles.
At the same time, as you said, there are a lot of the war planners are in Ramstein Base. The the intelligence for what to to target, how to circumvent the air defenses in Russia, all of this comes out of the Western countries. So this has become very much our war. I was I was referring to this as a proxy war in a discussion with professor Mersheimer, and he was correcting me. No.
No. We we passed that line a long time ago. We are now fighting the Russians directly. So but given that we already announced to the Russians how we're gonna escalate the war against them, where where does this end? Because I can't I can't imagine any other outcome now than the Russians feeling compelled to restore their deterrent in some kind of way.
Speaker 1: Of course, Russia started this war with a few mistakes, mistakenly thinking that Ukraine would be a piece of cake, which it would have been in 2014, but we armed Ukraine since at least 2015, and even the first Trump administration did. So but then after and you're much deeper into this than I am, but after changing strategy, Russia went in it for the long run. But I guess what surprised all of us is that how long it actually takes and how terrible this grinding ground operation is. I I think, and I'm not a military expert, I come from economics, that Russia is fighting this war to preserve manpower. Ukraine is not necessarily, but Ukraine also learned there's a few counteroffensives.
And so, we're in a war of production power, as was the Second World War from from a certain stage on, where military strategy was the smaller part, and sheer volume and production power was the other part. Think it was Stalin who said quantity is a quality by itself. And so we're now in a race of quantity, and I can only hope this this war gets resolved before, but I read your posts, I follow you on on this channel, and I completely concur that the danger of strikes on German and European territory has increased exponentially. I mean, Ramstein is a logistical base, the planning base is actually Stuttgart. And where I live in the mountains in the Eiffel, I have Nurnig with nuclear bombers 50 kilometers to the north, Buchel with the nuclear bombs 100 kilometers to the south, and then also Spangdalem 50 kilometers to the south.
I can hope that weapons are pretty pretty much on target and I'm elevated, so and the winds are favorable, so I can hope to get away. But it's not a good feeling. It's it's that feeling I grew up with as a kid during the Cold War when nuclear was was a reality, and when when starfighters were thundering through the skies, and now it's not starfighters so much, but flight activity over the Eiffel, which is one of the westernmost parts of Germany where my country house is, flight activity has increased very markedly in the past two or three years. So I can only hope that we find a resolution to this war. It's amazing.
I mean, indeed, if you think about it, Ukrainians are very brave and Russians are very brave. These these are two armies that fight to the death, which we in the West would probably not do. I mean, I've I've seen all these terrible movies of forced recruitments of young Ukrainian men to the front, but still, I mean, you have to respect the staying power if if it is for a corrupt and nationalist and almost fascist regime. But I don't dare making any predictions. I'm not a military expert.
I'm an economist.
Speaker 0: Yeah. Oh, it's the I I can I often, yeah, lay the blame at at the at the NATO, and I know there's more than one party here? Of course, there's conflict, but the reason is because I often feel the I can understand the Ukrainian and the Russian position. The the Russians had made it very clear they considered NATO's incursion into Ukraine to be an existential threat. So the way they see it, they fight for their survival.
The Ukrainians, of course, under very heavy Russian attack, not just losing its manpower, infrastructure, and territory, but, indeed, they also face an existential threat. So I can understand where the the fighting spirit comes from as well. But for for NATO, I don't this was very unnecessary because this security competition now that exist it didn't exist before 2014. At that time, nobody wanted in Ukraine. The overwhelming majority was against NATO membership, and they they overwhelming majority of Ukrainians didn't see Russia as a threat.
The Russians didn't see Ukraine as a threat. Essentially, security competition was introduced with with with this toppling of the government in in Kyiv for the purpose of pulling them to the orbit. So the way I see it, this is what caused it. This is what's necessary to reverse in order to reduce the security competition. But but you mentioned the Cold War.
We we've gone through something similar before, but how do you explain the Cold War? Because then we had discussions. There were debates that people said, well, we we have to deter, but we also shouldn't provoke. There's seemingly nothing of this in Europe today, though. It's quite extraordinary.
Speaker 1: It still baffles me. It still blows my mind that Europeans are so strong. Let's get back for a second. I wrote my dissertation on three case studies of changing German foreign policy in the the nineties. One is military missions abroad, one is EU deepening, and the third one is actually NATO enlargement versus the OAC.
And even then I had the fear, I mean, the first round of NATO enlargement had happened, I had the fear that this might happen, and I analyzed where Germany was positioned. And I my conclusion was in the sense that Germany did not increase as much in power as some international observers ascribed to it and the tasks upon Germany increased immensely, so that Germany would still try to mediate and but in in doubt would lean towards The US position. And we see that extremely now that we are basically taking over The US position. It's a very smart move on the side of The US because Europe by now is totally independent of totally dependent on The United States. So in in the Gulf Region, see some hopes that Iran has a very smart diplomacy, that that coalition of war might break, it might even break between Japan and The US, who knows?
There's some fishes there. But in Europe, basically, Europeans have taken on The US role and loving it. So I guess the brainwashing, the influencing is on a very granular societal level. It started with the so called reeducation after 1945, 1948 in Germany. Many of the German press outlets were US owned or had a US all of them had to have a US license, so you could say they're US friendly.
Springer, which runs Germany's largest tabloid, has in its employment contract the friendship to The US and Israel. So that's one thing. Then a lot of NGOs, and there was re education in the schools. I learned about Abraham Lincoln in school and George Washington. I didn't learn much about Frederick the Great or Bismarck.
I had to do that myself. So this is conditioning and shaping, and in one of my books I have the an example of the Inca Empire, where it took three generations to basically assimilate another people, and you started just with a few bases and put up your own guards and had friendly relations. And stage two and in stage three, you integrated the the other people's or the other people completely. So in that sense, we're very, very brainwashed. And in times like this, and this is my psychological explanation, times like this when things really are chaotic, there's an immense amount of insecurity, the world is changing rapidly, people need simple truths, people need enemies to identify.
And so, Russia is the enemy. Propaganda, unfortunately, has taken hold. Also, propaganda, the AFD is the enemy. And I'm quite close to the AFD and their leaders. I'm nonpartisan.
I used to be a CDU member. The CDU expelled me when I ran for president, an office that is supposed to be above the party, so it's a nonpartisan office, but they expelled me nonetheless. So, even in the AFD, the leaders are clear on course. We want sovereign Germany or want, want peace in Europe. We want reconciliation, but quite a few people, even parliamentarians in the party, are openly campaigning for war, for sharp confrontation with Russia.
So even this one hope we still have left is so far is holding, but it's not assured that we will have even a single voice of sanity in in the parliament forever.
Speaker 0: Well, the the situation in Germany, again, a lot of indicators are kinda grim. The the industrialization, the economic stagnation, the lack of energy security. Well, that's then that's just the economic aspect. But a lot of this isn't uniquely German, though. That is having leaders almost exclusively focused on foreign policy, warmongering, and essentially plummeting in the polls while trying to criminalize the opposition.
Do you how do you see this as a wider or a broader European trend?
Speaker 1: It's not only European trend. Think about The US. MAGA imploded. I mean, the original idea, no more foreign wars, focus on the domestic economy, focus on the American people has completely imploded. I mean, Trump has gone full out on war and enriching himself and his family and his friends.
And so indeed, I mean, this looks like a lot like polarization of societies like World War three, which we're in. And I guess you would agree, I mean, it's not an all out war by the law, but it's it's it's not the opening moves anymore. It's already at the end of the opening moves of of of this process, and I don't know how it will be stopped, but the hysteria seems to just increase. Leaders don't know what to do, they cry war, they cry control of the opposition, and unfortunately, unfortunately, this is a cyclical phenomenon. I mean, we in the social sciences, or at least most of our colleagues, don't don't believe in cyclical views of society because they say the future is free, we can determine it by ourselves.
Yes and no. I mean, there's patterns to human behavior. As Mark Twain said, risk history doesn't repeat, but it rhymes. There's patterns, and one can recognize those patterns. I remember a very smart but depressing tweet by or post by Those who do not know history are doomed to repeat it.
We know that much. But then he added, Those who do know history are doomed to watch while others repeat it. And that is pretty depressing, but it's it seems to me like a bit of this is the case. So, there's a great book by Strauss and Howe written in 1996 called The Fourth Turning, where they predict, and they have a generational theory of society and policy, and it's very US centered, but still they predict a huge they have a four generation cycle of twenty years each, and they predict a total upheaval of the world system or society between 2005 and 2025. Well, started in 2001, and it probably will be at the endpoint of that.
And the new regime, as a derogatory term, but as a political science term, the new regime will be quite authoritarian. I mean, think about the new consensus after 1945 in The US, or what Roosevelt built, and we're probably going to see something in the West and all over the world.
Speaker 0: I like that, yeah, quote by Musk. I often feel frustrated as well because, you know, it I can see where this is going. I remember I gave a speech at my university back in 2013 in in at the end of the year warning that, you know, if we're moving towards trying to topple Yanukovych, it's gonna be a disaster. And then but essentially, it always pushed back saying, well, you know, that's a that some sounds like something Russia would say, or the assumption that toppling the government would be beneficial for us, beneficial for the Ukrainians. And, you know, and you can just point that the basic security competition that, you know, the other side will respond when their security is undermined.
And, you know, all this well, essentially, the past decade, well, thirteen years now, it just you know, you see where this is going. You see the escalation. You know that we're going to war if this continues down this path, but there's there's nothing you can do seemingly. But about Trump, though, I actually this is one of the reasons I was optimistic about him during his election campaign because I thought the main problem for The United States was that his empire had been overextended. It had exhausted itself, and many of the other large powers were collectively balancing it.
I thought it would be a good idea for The US to essentially pull back. That is essentially save the republic by scaling back the empire and let the other Eurasian powers balance each other. This is what the offshore balancing strategy of The US traditionally was based around, and I thought once the hegemonic moment is over, they have to find a way of making this shift. But so I thought that was, you know, good for America, good for the world. Nobody, you know, benefits from going down the path we're doing now, but I don't know how it derailed.
But well, my my next question, it builds on the patterns you said. You can see the patterns in history. And, yeah, this is why I also wanted to ask you about, yeah, the the thinker, Oswald Spengler, because he he also identified much like other scholars on the rise and fall of civilizations. He focused on this common patterns we can see. So while not just pulling, you know, the German experience to the world, but also as as civilizations, what what kind of historical patterns are you looking at at the moment?
Speaker 1: Well, Spingler is of limited help here, but I mean, he's the philosopher that has really inspired me when I was a teenager even. He says that civilizations have a lifespan. He has an organic view, like they have an early stage with knighthood, and feudal times, and the cities are rising. And Spingler actually ascribes democracy to the rule of money. So for him, is a phase of about two hundred years, and that would have been, well, something from 1815, maybe to 2015, something like this, where the press where the press basically tells voters what to say, and voters then vote accordingly, and it's a battle about public opinion, and that's what he calls democracy, and it's already the very late stage of a civilization.
We could see something else in the Roman Republic, and after that comes a new religiousness, a new cesarean times where raw power starts to dominate the commercial world, and we do see that. I mean, we do see the return of The US to being a pirate state. There's a fantastic video on YouTube by a UN accredited journalist called The Rise of the Pirate State. And if you see Venezuela, Greenland, the attempt, Canada, Cuba, The US is basically using raw power. Trump is doing it unabashedly, is proud of it.
I mean, The US has been using raw power for a long time, but often concealed it, cloaked it in under terms of spreading democracy. This is not so much the case anymore. So we might see the final stage of the West, which can last for a long time if it stabilizes like Rome lasted for a long time. But we see that democracy is crumbling, and I one of my Spangler quotes, he said, decent citizens even in Caesar's times, these decent citizens wouldn't go to vote because politics had become a business, had become totally corrupt. You bought your votes, and we can see that we can see that in the US congressional races where Thomas Massie, one of the sole dissenting voices in the Congress, a true MAGA champion, Make America Great, America First, No Forever Was, and he's running I think for his third or fourth term, and he had always been voted in with a large majority, and now the lobby, mostly the Israel lobby, but also others are spending 30,000,000 so far, even more on this one single race, which is the highest sum ever spent because even one dissenter in congress within the Republican Party is is too much for them.
So we'll see, but I see democracy indeed highly undermined. We saw it in COVID. We see it in the Ukraine war. We see it in Ukraine itself, of course, which is right now a military dictatorship. And I think we in the West try to emulate that military dictatorship, so we don't have those, let's say, inconvenient elections anymore for the next for the next years.
Because, of course, the West is over indebted and huge sacrifices, huge changes, huge cancelling of debts have to be made, and those won't be made simply and exclusively by market forces. They will be made by government decree to some extent. So I think the the model of a military dictatorship or a COVID dictatorship, which was somewhat of a military dictatorship, as COVID was a war. I mean, psychologically, was a war against the virus, with curfews, with everything. So I don't have too many hopes for democracy right now.
That's, I guess, my conclusion from my reading of Spengler. I
Speaker 0: share your pessimistic view on this, unfortunately. What what I find interesting, though, is often when you look at the the scholars throughout the the the ages studying the rise and fall of civilizations, they tend to make a distinction between culture and civilization. So civilization often being like the plant and the culture being the roots. And I know the word culture is often thrown around a lot, but people like Max Weber, I think, did interesting work on culture because he also predicted cultural decline and the the consequences because the way he sees it, what is culture would be the glue that essentially binds us all together. The you know, what what we all have in common, and not just what ties to each other, but tie us to the generation that came before us and the one that will come after.
And so, essentially, what, yeah, what what we create, which is worth passing on to to the next generation, he I guess, Weber's perspective, he argued that the the excessiveness of, well, of the of reasoning individualism, it often demystified culture, which would corrupt it. But, you know, from a more Spengler perspective, how how do you see this? Because what is the main relationship then between culture and civilization if you would assess the the future of our civilization?
Speaker 1: Okay. You make that distinction. I think Spengler actually was the first one to make it. I'm not sure, but he certainly was very big on distinguishing culture and civilization. Many people wouldn't do that.
I mean, they would use the term synonymously, but for Spengler, culture was something organic that grew and evolved and from early feudal times, from very early times through the rise of the first cities, through later times in about four seasons. I mean, those were all, of course, metaphors or pictures he painted. And civilization is basically the final stage which can last forever or for a long time. You just don't see any internal development. So civilization is basically fully outward oriented, there's no more internal development, the internal battles and thoughts have been fought, there is maybe a second religiousness which people adopt, and there is, let's say, a mechanization and standardization of life, as you could see it in Roman civilization.
He said the Greeks had a culture, Rome, let's say starting February, started to develop into a civilization. I mean, was surely in a civilization in the West, which, I mean, culture or art is dominated by fashions and fans and by commerce. It's not a coherent, consistent thing. It's, as you said, a lot of individualism. And one very important thing is the wish to live.
The will to live dies. We don't have children anymore, we don't reproduce, population collapses. And we saw that in late Rome, we see it throughout the West, throughout the world actually now, which is a unique situation. I mean, every continent is collapsing basically with the exception of Black Africa, even South America, even most of the Asian countries, even India. I mean, they're all going through rapid population declines, Persia of course a lot so.
So, that is new. This is a global phenomenon, so Western culture civilization might have been so overbearing that that penetrates and pervades other cultures. Of course, Russian thinkers and Spingler said that himself there might be Eurasian Russian culture blooming, which is about a thousand years behind us. But that culture, of course, has been overlaid by Western patterns to such an extent that is probably very much covered. So we see what happens there, but then again Russia is not that big, what, a 120, 130,000,000 people.
So we're in a late stage, decadence, no more children, big cities. That is where the West is currently at. And actually, we're going to award the next Spengler Prize to David Goldman. He is in the US state department. He is, of course, an ardent supporter of of Israel, but he is I happen to disagree there, but that shouldn't that shouldn't distract from scholarly recognition, because he wrote a lot about civilizations and cultures, and I think we need that perspective, that broader perspective also when looking at the West.
That's why he's going to get that prize.
Speaker 0: Yeah. This idea of a cultural revival, it's quite important to sustain civilizations then because if if there's no revival or continuation of the of the culture, well, essentially, every new generation becomes, you know, just a cheaper copy of the one before. And the people often I remember, especially in the February, there was so much focus on the soft power of The US that it had a lot of popular culture. But for a lot of American conservatives, they were kind of drawing a distinction between what popular culture is and traditional cultures because popular culture is here and now. But if it becomes overwhelming, too successful, it kind of drowns out the traditional call traditional culture where you actually have handing down from generation to generation.
It's something that you can actually will tie society and the world civilization together as well. But, you know, you can only make so many remakes of Spider Man before you have to ask whether or not there's an actual, you know, cultural sustainability here. But on on that topic, do you do you see civilizations having an an ability to reverse its decline? Because this is kinda where a lot of civilizational scholars disagree. Some argue they can go into the excessive materialist.
Some believe you can come back again, while others see it as essentially being a, well, a set cycle. That is you will you know, you'll have the spring, you'll have summer, and then your autumn and winter in which she dies, and then, of course, can be reborn. But do you do you see a possibility for a civilizational revival?
Speaker 1: Well, human history is open. That's for sure, but I haven't seen it yet. So I'm I'm tending towards the civilizational the pattern view that civilizations run their course. We've seen, of course, that China has had a strong comeback, but China is not sure that a lot of the civilization has come back, but China has kept its its language and its its writing system, which is a very important part of the identity. So that's one thing that binds it together, but there's not many, let's say, organizations on the level of civil society in China.
It's the state, it's the family of the individual, because there's also a huge surveillance apparatus now. So China has has lasted for of three, four thousand years and is doing remarkably well. So not sure it's a cultural revival, but the old civilization has picked up Western techniques and is doing pretty well. So we will see. What Penguin would predict is a second religiousness.
So let's see, in in the West we have two contending themes here. We have the evangelical Christians who believe in the Third Temple and who are always Israel. Most of them I'm not. I would call myself also an evangelical Christian, but more often Mennonite, which is different, is the origin, actually, of evangelical Christians. But most of my brethren in faith would go on an all out support for Israel, and those families are still functioning, and they have children, and that's one thing.
And the other one is, I think, welcome research in Catholicism with Pope Leo being the positive surprise of of the last past few years, openly criticizing war and openly spreading the gospel. So I think people get tired of thinking and thinking about problems. That's also a very Spenglerian saying, very Spenglerian thought I'm uttering right now. People get tired of all these intellectual debates and want back to their roots and want back their faith. So that could be the next phase of Western civilization.
In that sense, Spengler said Islam is a thousand years ahead of us because they've gone all through this this intellectual phase and they're back to to a blind faith or stage. But these are very deep things, of course. I didn't expect us to discuss them, but I I think they bear some additional perspective on all of this.
Speaker 0: Well, there's a lot of the civilizational scholars who could discuss, of course. I like toying be as well, but but but the general theme seems to be if civilization outgrows its own roots, then it begins to die just like a plant can't survive without its roots. But this seems to be a key challenge in the areas of these periods of globalization as well. One get often this civilizational all ex exhaustion. But, yeah, well, my I guess my last question is just how do you do you see the populist movements going across Europe and The United States?
When I used the word populist, I you know, it's it's often demeaned to a large extent, but populism simply means that, you know, you have a political el elite which has distanced itself from the public, and the populist kinda builds on this rhetoric. I remember even Obama and Bernie Sanders referred to themselves as populist in their days, but, anyways, now it has very negative connotation. But I guess my point back to my question. Do you see the populist movements, yeah, in the Europe and The US, do they have a possibility, or do they reflect the democratic revival? Because, I guess, I tended to see it that way.
And then, of course, we had people like Trump and Maloney, and I'm starting to become a bit more pessimistic? Or, you know, is it just symptoms of a civilizational fatigue? Well,
Speaker 1: I would go as far as saying that the FDA right now is the only party enriching the democratic debate. They are democratically organized, the other parties are mostly machines with long term career politicians starting at young ages and very low levels having served their way up. The AFD had a lot of people coming in from all of the people coming in from normal jobs, basically. Now they of course already have their first wave of career politicians. So I think the system is leaning towards autocracy, towards what kind take authoritarianism, whatever you might call it.
The international system is pointing towards war. We saw that with Trump. But one shouldn't give up hopes. Mean, Meloni in in Italy and Mertz in Germany, we still voted to ship more weapons to Israel and so on. And by Meloni sometimes positioned herself differently to the public opinion, but what she did was another thing again.
So there is widespread dissatisfaction in The US, in Germany. We have to look at these cases bit by bit. In Spain, we have a prime minister Pedro Sanchez who is very outspokenly critical of of of the actions in Gaza and Lebanon. In The US, we have a highly unstable domestic situation because most of the Democrats are against the Iran war, most of the Republicans are. There's still the rally around the flag effect, but only within the Republican camp, which is new in The US before people rallied around the president whenever there was war from whichever side.
This is not happening, so The US might have huge domestic ruptures ahead. And in Germany, we only have this one party, AFD. There was a BSV, an alliance, I know her fairly well, and have done quite a few things with her who was on the left and also was arguing for peace with Russia. Unfortunately, they did pretty much every strategic and tactical and organizational mistake you could do, otherwise they would be in in parliament, but they're not. So there's only the AFD.
And they gained a solid foundation. They have 28% of the vote. Now, by far the biggest party, the CDU, has 22%, and most the German population doesn't want this war, sixty, seventy, 80%. I don't have the latest figures. But so and the leaders, the two co leaders position themselves for diplomacy and so on and so forth, but you could also see a few politicians, parliamentarians, activists campaigning very actively for war.
So it's an ongoing battle. I'm pessimistic as you regarding the global picture and the picture in Europe, but there's always developments that might change it. So it's not all is lost, but we can we can keep some faint hope or some small hope that some of those developments will turn out to be positive surprises.
Speaker 0: Yeah. No. It's yeah. I haven't given up quite yet, but but there are some, yeah, some good news coming out every now and then, so there is, yeah, still hope. But it is concerning that it doesn't seem to matter who sits on the throne if the policies simply remain the same.
And I I couldn't help but to notice the same pushback against Massey, the idea that you're the one one peacemonger, which would be then too much for him to handle. It's, yeah, it's very depressing. But, well, I know you're a busy man, so I want to thank you very much for taking the time to come on.
