Speaker 0: Why would a reporter say, I'm not going to cover that because I am unhappy about what's happening there? Speaker 1: It's not unhappiness, mister Wallace. It's don't you have a higher duty as an American citizen to do all that you can to save the lives of soldiers rather than this journalistic ethic of reporting the fact. Speaker 0: No. You don't have the higher duty to no. No. You're a reporter. Your job is to cover what is going on in that war. People know that Americans are getting killed in that war. Lord knows it's a hypothetical. I would probably I'd get on I'd get on the horn with Peter and say, what the dickens do you mean? Speaker 1: Yeah. I think he's right too. I check a note. I mean, I played the hypothetical very hard, but I think he's right. Speaker 2: Colonel Connell, I feel utter contempt. 2 days later, they're both walking off my hilltop. They're 200 yards away, and they get ambushed. And they're lying there wounded. And they're gonna expect I'm gonna send marines out there to get them. They're just journalists. They're not Americans. Is that a fair reaction? Yeah. Can't have it both ways. Speaker 1: It's fair. It's a fair reaction. Speaker 0: It's a fair reaction. Speaker 2: But I'll do it. And that's what makes me so contemptuous of them. And marines will die going to get a couple of journals. Speaker 1: The marines in Guantanamo were fanatical. Speaker 2: About what? Speaker 1: About being marines.

Earth Day was a mixed success, with predominantly young, white, and anti-Nixon protesters. Despite this, the seriousness of the message came through: act or face dire consequences. Climate change has caused a 1-degree Celsius increase in global temperatures and unprecedented levels of carbon dioxide. We are dangerously close to irreversible tipping points that could lead to catastrophic temperature rises, food and water shortages, and the collapse of civilization. The United States and China, as the largest economies, must cooperate to meet climate goals. It's a choice between climate solidarity or collective suicide. Climate change is the greatest threat to human security ever faced.

Speaker 0: Good evening. A unique day in American history is ending. A day set aside for a nationwide outpouring of mankind seeking its own survival. Earth Day, a day dedicated to enlisting all the citizens of a bountiful country in a common cause of saving life from the deadly byproducts of that property. The foul skies, the filthy waters, the littered earth. As a demonstration, its Success was mixed beyond expectations here, far below there. No one now can know exactly how many took part. We do have an idea how many planned participation, student groups and 2,000 colleges and 10,000 lower schools, Citizen groups in 2,000 communities. By one measurement, Earth Day failed. It did not unite. It did attract that broad cross A section of America its sponsors wanted, not quite. Its demonstrators were predominantly young, predominantly white, predominantly anti Nixon. Often its protests appeared frivolous, Its protesters curiously carefree. Yet the gravity of the message of Earth Day still came through. Act or die. Speaker 1: In the last 150 years, the world has warmed on average by just over 1 degree Celsius. And our atmosphere now contains concentrations of carbon dioxide that have not been equaled for 1000000 of years. We are today perilously close to tipping points that, once past, Will send global temperatures spiraling catastrophically higher. If we continue on our current path, we will face the collapse of everything that gives us our security. Food production, access to fresh water, habitable ambient temperature and ocean food chains. And if the natural world can no longer support the most basic of our needs, Then much of the rest of civilization will quickly break down. Please make no mistake. Climate change is the biggest threat to security that modern humans have ever faced. Speaker 2: The 2 largest economies, the United States and China, have a particular responsibility to join efforts to make this pact a reality. And this is our only hope of meeting our climate goals. Humanity has a choice. Cooperate or perish. It is either a climate solidarity pact or a collective suicide pact.
