Speaker 1: We have had an awful lot of back and forth and provided thousands of pages of of documents on this. This article, I can't it looks like it's from 2015. Right. So, we will have to look into the specific claims. But, again, to put on the record It's a big USAID has not Speaker 0: But actually will not Speaker 1: That is your authorize gain of function. Speaker 0: Know that's your position, but the record will show that you did. Well And this was before your time. I don't know why we can't just admit it. It did happen. And the reason this is important is many people wanna collect all these viruses from around the world, but they don't wanna just collect the viruses to sort of have them and have a library of viruses. They take the virus, then they take an s protein from another virus, and they create a virus that doesn't exist in nature that often has ramifications that could be quite different or quite, serious. I'll give you the words of the authors of this paper. On the basis of these findings, scientific review panels may deem similar studies building chimeric viruses based on circulating strains too risky to pursue. So this was funded by USID. It was funded through the predict program. There's no question of that. And even the authors admit that it was gain of function. So we have to get beyond sort of quibbling over whether it was because we have to make sure in the future we're not doing this and that we don't fund this going forward. Now the predict program was going to be surpassed by another program going after viruses, and that has been suspended. That is all good. But we have to admit the past, be truthful about the past in order to go forward because millions of people died from COVID nineteen. The FBI has concluded it came from a lab in Wuhan. The Department of Energy has concluded that. Even the CIA initially, their scientific board voted six to one until they were overturned by higher ups at the CIA to say otherwise. They voted to say that this thing came from the lab as well. It only comes from the lab if we're if if if we're in favor of creating these things. We can't control everything China does, but we certainly shouldn't be funding it. So we have to be honest that this was funded. Now there was a warning sign to us that this was going on. There was something called the DIFUSE project in 2018 that was presented to DARPA, once again by Barrick and by doctors Shi and Wuhan. That's okay. The DIFUSE project was to create a coronavirus with a furan cleavage site, which doesn't exist in nature but makes it incredibly more infectious in humans. There was a briefing to 15 agencies. One of the agencies was USAID. There was a briefing about this diffuse project, but nobody from USAID and nobody from all 15 agencies ever told anyone about this project. It was hidden for years and years and only revealed by a brave lieutenant colonel Marine working at DARPA who exposed this when everybody else had hidden this. And my question is, USAID was in this briefing about a research project that had incredible danger to our country and finally wasn't funded. Will you provide the names of the people from USAID who were in this meeting so they can be interviewed so we can find out why didn't they tell anyone, or did they tell their superiors and nobody and people ignored them? Why was the public never made aware that they were trying to do dangerous research to create a virus very similar to what COVID nineteen became, and how could 15 agencies show up for a briefing and no one expose it to the public? And we only hear about it by a whistleblower. Will you provide for us the name of the person, the USAID, who attended this briefing in 2018 and let us interview them to find out what happened. Why was this never revealed to the public? So I Speaker 1: think within the 10,000 pages of documents you have from USAID are whatever documents we have on this DARPA proposers meeting. I received the letter we received the letter from your staff yesterday. We certainly look at the request. But just to give a little context, US government agencies often, on good days, show up for one another, go to each other's meetings. This is not something that USAID ever considered funding or was ever engaged substantive way. Speaker 0: The point is is that after hearing that somebody wanted to put a furan cleavage site in the virus, alarm bells go off. And then when you see the virus in 2020 and you say, oh my goodness, they did what they were asking, someone should have said, wow. I wasn't that hearing, and I didn't think anything of it at the time. But now I'm like, maybe I should tell somebody. Maybe I should call up the president. Maybe I should call up Anthony Fauci. Maybe somebody should be informed that we learned about this, and I didn't think anything of it at the time. You're right. It could have been inconsequential in 2018. In 2020, it becomes profoundly important. Why didn't anybody from government come forward to warn us that this could be a virus not from nature, which is not very infectious usually, and was incredibly infectious because it had been preadapted in a lab for human transmission? Speaker 1: Look. I just wanna come back to your earlier point. All of this ended at USAID in 2020. It is before my time. We don't feel defensive about these engagements. We've appreciated Speaker 0: That's all we're asking for is the the we'd like to interview the person who was at that meeting. Speaker 1: I understand. We will look at that request, but but what I just wanna make clear is that in a collaborative spirit, we also understand the the stakes, the human stakes of of of history, of recent history and and the risks. And you have raised flags in a manner that has required us to dig in, I think, in in important ways on top of what we had been doing previously. And so we will continue the back and forth with you in your office and and certainly don't ever wanna be in a position, to, do anything ourselves using taxpayer resources, to create risks. When you have physical growth in a finite planet, pressures are going to mount to stop the growth. Those and climate change is one of those pressures. So it's a symptom of our efforts to keep promoting physical growth in a finite planet. You know, ironically, if we solved climate change, if we could somehow push a magic button and eliminate greenhouse gases anymore, then the consequences will be but continue with our growth. We'll just have to see bigger pressures in other sectors. Then water scarcity or or epidemics or warfare or some other pressure will have to become even more powerful. Because finally, the pressures against growth have to equal the pressures in favor of growth. And only when they're equal, growth will stop. In 1972, when we published that first book, Lemons to Growth, it provided a lot of data and a computer model and many scenarios. But the basic idea was that the policies existing at that time promoted exponential growth of population and material consumption. That's the first point. The second point, the earth is finite. There are limits. And then the third point, when you have exponential growth in a finite planet, either you have to stop it yourself, or it will be stopped by global problems. So those were the 3 things. And then we said, fine. And if you're going to stop it yourself, the sooner you do that, the more possibilities will exist afterwards. When we did that forecast back in 1972, almost immediately, people from the newspapers and television came and said, so how are we doing? You know, what and I, of course, I said at that time, you know, it needs 30 or 40 years to see whether we are right or not. So now it has been a little over 40 years. And generally, the studies which are done say that we are on the path of our standard scenario. In that 1972 book, we showed 13 different possible futures, 13 different scenarios. Some of them were overshoot and collapse, and some of them were transitioned to sustainability. The standard scenario so called standard scenario was overshoot and collapse. That assumed, no change in policies. Recently, including, in a recent publication, by the Dutch environmental, ministry, it shows that we haven't made major changes and therefore the globe is still unfolding along that path which we projected back in 1972. Globally, we're very far above, sustainable levels. And we're starting now to see the symptoms, of those problems which will stop growth. I mean, we said in 72, the growth is going to stop one way or another. Either we will stop it through our own actions or the earth will stop it. And we're starting to see symptoms that the earth is stopping it. Climate change, water depletion, soil erosion, depletion of cheap fuels. These are examples of the pressures which are mounting against growth. Did you expect climate change to emerge as a major sustainability issue the way it did? Limits to Growth has been, published 3 times, 3 editions. And each time, we actually rewrote the whole book. We kept the logical structure of the book. And since we are dealing with the same world, the conclusions didn't change. Although, of course, as we went along from 1972, the second report came out in 1994. And the 3rd report came out in 2004. So, of course, as we moved along, we were fewer and fewer options were still available, to us. Tell me your question again. Did you, think that climate change Oh, yeah, climate change. And those three additions reflect the changing understanding of climate change. I actually went back and looked at the 3 editions in English and counted the number of times that the phrase climate change showed up. In the first book, once, we showed the c02 curve going up, but we weren't concerned so much about climate change. We were using that CO 2 curve to illustrate some points about, what we call persistent pollution. CO 2 in the atmosphere is a persistent pollutant. It lasts for a long time. And we were making some points about that. And we said sort of on the side, Oh, incidentally, some people think this could cause climate change. But in 1972, there was really, very little understanding and concern about it. Then in 9 so once in 72. In 94, I think it shows up something like 8 times. And in 2,004, it shows up, I think, 24 times. Same curve, except, of course, the points just kept going up. So we really weren't concerned about climate change in, 72 and in 2,004, we mentioned it as but the important thing to realize, we don't consider climate change to be a problem. It's a symptom. When you have physical growth in a finite planet, pressures are going to mount to stop the growth. Those and climate change is one of those pressures. So it's a symptom of our efforts to keep promoting physical growth in a finite planet. And shouldn't the shouldn't there be some kind of policy here? Well, I mentioned this morning that, greenhouse gases are generated as a consequence of 4 different things, population, the level of material consumption, the amount of energy required to support that material consumption, and the fraction of that energy which comes from fossil fuels, because fossil fuels are the source of CO2. And if you look at it, all of the energy these days, the Paris conference, most of the scientific work which is being done focuses on the last 2, on the energy intensity of our consumption and on, the role of fossil fuels trying to shift over to renewable sources. And we completely ignore population and material consumption. So yes, the answer is we ignore them. It's politically inconvenient. Politicians wouldn't want to tell you that if you to deal with climate change, you have to lower your standard of living. So we still have this fantasy, collective fantasy, that we will somehow solve climate change but without giving up our material standard of living and for sure not doing that politically incorrect, thing to try to talk about birth rates. If you start to think about birth rates, of course, it's, a very complex issue, not only because, it's highly cultural specific and cultures differ from one place to another, but also it has all sorts of religious connotations. And then you get into this issue of men versus women. I mean, it's a very, very complex matter. But I know from my research that you can make great progress on this simply by trying to create circumstances where people, women mainly, can have as many kids as they want. We know, actually, from fairly solid, studies, that many women around the world end up having more children than they really want to have because of cultural pressures, because abortions are illegal, because of, religious, principles, because of cultural norms and so forth. So if we could you know, the first step is simply to let people do what they would really like to do.
