I learned about chosen families at a young age because I didn't receive the love I needed at home. I found my own love and support, and I believe everyone should have that opportunity. In the classroom, I encourage students to rely on their friends rather than their parents. I feel sad and have negative feelings towards my sister. At school, my main issue is that I only do things if I want to. Most of the time, I don't feel motivated to do anything.

Speaker 0: I feel like I had to learn the concept of chosen families really young, and it wasn't anything to do with my queerness, but just based on the fact that I didn't have the love at home that I needed. And I knew that I was valuable and deserved it, so I found it on my own early on. And, you know, I shouldn't be blamed for that because they're, like, real like, blood still exist. You were never there for me, and I found my own love, and that's okay. And I think everybody should be allowed to do that. And that's what I fucking teach in the classroom. Okay? I always say give it your friend, not your mom. Because fuck your mom. And I don't know. I just am so sad. I'm so sad and I hate my sister. She's a fucking cunt. That's all I have to say. This is in the required curriculum for 4th graders in Superior School District, WI. They’re teaching 9-year-olds that doctors “assign” a sex at birth but they could be wrong because you can be trans.

Speaker 0 asks if a baby is a boy or a girl. Speaker 1 explains that a baby's sex is determined by their body parts at birth. However, gender is how someone feels inside and may not always match their sex. Speaker 1 gives an example of someone born with a penis who identifies as a boy, and someone born with a penis who identifies as a girl. Speaker 0 asks if gender means liking certain things, to which Speaker 1 responds that toys and clothes are for everyone, regardless of gender. Speaker 0 shares that they have been told what they can and cannot play with based on their gender, but Speaker 1 reassures them that they can choose what feels right for them. The video ends with Speaker 1 saying goodbye.
Full Transcript
Speaker 0: Hi, baby. Are you a boy or a girl? Speaker 1: Funny you should ask, Sid. One of the first things they check when a new baby is born is what kind of body parts they have. They do that to determine a baby's sex. Ask. Most of the time, it's easy to determine. And sometimes, it's more complicated. This one has a penis. It's a boy. Ask. This one has a vulva. It's a girl. Congratulations. Woah. Let's hit the brakes, ask people. The way your body looks on the outside is only part of the story. What? Ask Stay with me, gang. This is important. Hi, little one. Your sex refers to your physical body parts, remember? But there is also something called gender, which is how you feel inside your body and who you know yourself to be. Add. And your gender, how you feel on the inside, doesn't always match the sex you recalled when you were born. Speaker 0: Okay. Speaker 1: Let's say you were born with a penis and you feel like a boy inside. In that case, your sex and your gender match. But what Speaker 0: if you were born with a penis ask. And you know you're a girl inside, not a boy. Speaker 1: Then your sex and your gender don't match. Speaker 0: Wait. What does know you're a girl outside. I mean, anyway, does that mean you have to love pink things and princesses? Speaker 1: Nope. Sometimes people refer to things as girl things and boy things, but this is just how people sometimes classify things, usually to make it easier to sell stuff to kids and their parents. Clothes, toys, and games are for everyone. Ask. You don't have to be a boy or a girl to like a certain thing. Sid, has anyone ever told you that you shouldn't play with something or wear something because you're a boy? Act Well, yes. The body parts you were born with don't always dictate who you are, how you feel, or what you like Speaker 0: have to play with. That's such a relief. Speaker 1: Gender, how you feel and who you know yourself to be, tells you who ask Are. And there are a whole bunch of possibilities. Figuring out what feels right for you is just part of growing up. Bye, little cutie. Speaker 0: Ask.

My pronouns are they/them, but for this meeting, I'm sharing that I use she/they/him. This often leads to complex discussions about gender, which we don't typically have. I once asked my father, "Do you know what it means to be a man?" He said no. Then, "Do you know what it means to be a woman?" Again, he said no. And that's where I'm at too. My womanhood isn't defined by childbearing or feminine behavior, and my manhood isn't about my genitalia. Understanding gender identity is a key part of being in the LGBTQ community.
Full Transcript
Speaker 0: My pronouns are theythem, or at least that's what I share with people most often. But for this particular meeting, I will come out fully as saying that my pronouns are she, they, him. Now I don't usually go into that because it becomes a quite interesting, delicate conversation about what it means to be a man, what it means to be a woman. And I get that. That is conversation that we don't generally have as young people or even as adults in our current culture. Fair enough. So I will simply say what I told my 60 year old father who was also born and raised in the Madison area like myself. I asked him, do you know what it means to be a man? And to his credit, he said, no, I don't. And then I asked him, do you know what it means to be a woman? And again, to his credit, he said, no, I don't. And then I looked at him and I said, yeah, that's pretty pretty much it. That's where I land. I land at an understanding that my womanhood, as I was assigned at birth, does not come from my ability to produce children or to behave in a feminine way, and my manhood does not come in the form of my genitalia, for that can be lost too. And so there is a discussion to be had about gender identity and understanding of what it means to be part of the LGBTQ community.

Speaker 0: Hi. I'm Rosie, Texas English teacher and transgender goddess here with just a couple of thoughts about some gender euphoria that I've been feeling today. So for those of you that don't know, euphoria is the feeling you get when you finally feel comfortable in your gender, when you something good happens and it just brings you a lot of joy and calm and it's been happening to me a lot today. This morning when I stopped at the gas station for my morning energy drink, I got manned which is so funny because I know that there are a lot of women who really don't like being called MAMD but I like it a lot. It's so new to me and it's so wonderful and it was such a small thing to make me this happy. And then at school today I'm surrounded by kids. I teach sophomores and I have these fifteen 16 year olds who are completely on board, who when I told them I had changed my pronouns jumped right into it. They call me ma'am, they call me miss, They use my correct pronouns and know my correct name, and it is incredibly affirming. So I guess my message here is if you have any trans people in your life, it is so easy to show them love. So easy. All you have to do is respect them. Something as simple as calling a trans woman ma'am could be the thing that completely changes her entire day. It does for me. I've been out for seven months and it never ever ever gets old. So I just want you to know if you have trans people in your life, love them because it means everything to them.

The speaker is co-chair of the trans and non-binary network of the NEU, a teacher at an alternative provision where most students are trans and non-binary, and an activist. The speaker clarifies they did not make their students trans; the school was like that when they arrived. These students come to the alternative provision because they are kicked out of the mainstream education system. Their gender expression is seen as a dismissal of behavior policy, their self-advocacy is seen as defiance, and their identity is seen as something worth anguish, not pride. The speaker and colleagues work to help students through trauma and show them that learning does not need to be an act of silencing. The speaker believes the current government's guidance is despicable and that there is no reason why students cannot be themselves in classrooms. Speaker 0: Thank you so much. So I am here as the co chair of the trans and non binary network of the NEU. I'm here as a teacher. I'm here as an activist, but I want to speak to you as a teacher. I teach an alternative provision where most of our students are trans and non binary. To be clear, I did not make them trans. The school was like that when I got there. However, they come to us not because of some inherent flaw, but because they are kicked out of the mainstream education system. Their gender expression is seen as a dismissal of behavior policy. Their self advocacy is seen as the science. Their identity as seen as something worth anguish, not pride. However, we sit there, we work with them. We do our best to work through that trauma and show them that learning does not need to be an act of silencing if it is done properly. The guidance that the previous government put out and that our current government is currently honoring is nothing more than despicable. There is no reason why our students cannot be themselves with in our classrooms. No reason at all. So I urge you, speak to your MPs, speak to your friends, speak to your families. Hell, speak to that Facebook group, but that Karen your local area. Speak to your D and D club. Speak to your stitching area because when I come back into school on Tuesday, I want to be able to tell my kids that when the systems in place fail to protect us, we fight back.
