Speaker 0: So I said this is a tragic story. So we and it's it's graphic. We have a warning for viewers that the next story is graphic. Sentencing begins today for six white former Mississippi police officers who tortured two black men last year. They apparently responded to a call from a neighbor who complained that two men were living with a white woman.
The officers who called themselves the goon squad assaulted the men with stun guns, sex toys, and poured liquid on them. They then forced them to shower together. One of the offers officers then shot one of the victims in a in the mouth in a mock execution and attempted to plant evidence in an attempt to cover up the crimes. So joining us now for more on this is Steve Barrick. He is a former prosecutor and a partner at Barrick and Associates.
Thanks a lot for joining us. You were not involved in this case. We should sort of clarify. But you're here to talk about it. The details are out.
The men are awaiting sentencing, and the details are just they're grizzly. What is expected? What's the expected sentence for this type of crime, particularly because, you know, we're talking about this crime committed by officers?
Speaker 1: Right. So the statute they're being prosecuted under is, deprivation of rights, under the color of law. The the maximum sentence actually could be as significant as the death penalty, which I wouldn't expect in this case. I think what they're realistically looking at is life in prison for these horrific crimes. So it's a very broad statute with very significant penalties.
And so I think their sentence is gonna be very significant.
Speaker 2: So one of the victims is still suffering from the physical injuries they sustained in the attack. What role will that play in sentencing?
Speaker 1: So these are all factors, Ladd, under the federal sentencing guidelines, injuries, long lasting injuries, significance of injuries. Those all play a role. So I I think that this judge I I mean, these crimes in modern America are this is shocking, shocking conduct. So I expect them to get a a very lengthy sentence for what happened that day. And, you know, there's this is not the only time this goon squad.
I mean, I there are other incidents that law enforcement is looking into with these guys. So it's look. There's a lot going on here.
Speaker 0: It so it's not just that. It's not just a criminal case. The county sheriff's office is now facing a $400,000,000 civil lawsuit as a result of the attack. How could this play out in court?

Speaker 0: Good afternoon all. I am major Stephanie Minter Gibson and I oversee the crime victims unit for the Orleans Fire Sheriff's Office. Once I was notified about the escapees, I immediately gathered a team of experienced staff and we started calling victims and survivors just to make sure that they are aware of what was going on and that they are safe. For the records that had no information, I immediately reach out to our partners. Partners such as NOPD Special Victims Unit, Detective Walton, who was very grateful in helping us and she provide us with other information that we were able to call those families and help them as well.
Once we finish the first batch of victims, we started calling the second batch and actually the reason why I'm saying that is because I separated them. The chief from the DA's office victims, Alison McGuire reached out to me and we both were calling victims. What she had and I did not have, we shared information and we both gather all the information and we made sure all victims were aware of what was going on. Most of the victims were very grateful for the cause. They graciously thank us.
We additionally sent our detectives to their homes for more safety measures. And that alone speak measures. I strongly encourage all to educate the community on the importance of buying link. It was during a head count around 08:30 this morning when this was revealed. I have asked officials if they have camera footage of the escape. I also asked why we were not alerted earlier, why we can't ask questions. As you as you mentioned, no one appeared to have known about this escape for quite some time. Now if our sources are correct, inmates potentially dug a hole.
I know Travis mentioned a toilet being taken off a wall, which could mean that this could have been planned for quite some time. We're even hearing about this might being an inside job from sources. Sheriff Susan Hudson says that local state and federal partners will be helping in trying to get these inmates back into custody. We're gonna go to some some sound from that earlier press conference from Hudson.
