Speaker 0: In 2012, DARPA, which is the research division of the military, started a program. It's called the Adept Protect p three program, pandemic prevention platform. Look what they proposed. They said, listen, we are going to use gene encoded vaccines as a new category of preventive measures based on RNA or DNA. And in this approach, we will stop a pandemic within sixty days.
Within sixty days, in 2012, this was started. When president Trump came out and said it's operation warp speed and they're gonna develop vaccines, it would have been nice if he was prepped or Anthony Fauci was prepped to say, listen. We're working on this. We've been working on this since 2012. This is not new.
This isn't warp speed. This is ten years and coming. The deception out in the open that this was rapidly developed, that there was all this stunning innovation. The contractors, Moderna got its first multi million dollar contract in 2013. The military works on programs, both the threat, SARS CoV two, and work on the answer, monoclonal antibodies and vaccines.
But the military has biological threat programs. There's one for smallpox monkeypox, there's one for anthrax, and who knows how many more programs. This was part of a program. Because I think one of the lessons, and this is something Laurie Garrett and I talked about in the last hour, is that if the whole world isn't safe, then none of us are safe. But talk about both aspects of Cures reporting, the significance of vaccinations commencing today in The UK and the long, long road ahead.

Speaker 0: Here, I would like to introduce our first speaker and keynote speaker, Professor David Moranz from National Institute of Health from The United States Of America. Professor David Moranz is advisor to the director of NIH and he also worked with the US CDC as the chief of respiratory and special pathogens branch. So, I'm really looking forward to his great story about lessons learned. And here's to pass the microphone to Professor Moranz. Floor Hughes, please.
Speaker 1: Thank you, Nikki, and hello to everybody out there. Yes, I'm going to talk about a century old pandemic, but this is not a history lesson. What I hope to do is talk a little bit about how sepsis and septic shock and death from bacterial disease comes about. And, this is, to talk about natural history and pathogenesis. And one of the points to be thinking about as I speak is that if sepsis and septic shock and death are the downstream events, what are the upstream events and how do they progress?
Because if we can answer that question, we'll have some ideas about what we can do to prevent the outcomes from happening. Let's go back in time more than one hundred years ago before the nineteen eighteen pandemic of influenza and talk about something that is relevant to everything else I'm going to say and that is the subject of bacterial viral co pathogenesis. People being infected by two different microorganisms at once, one a virus and one a bacterium. The realization of the importance of co pathogenesis came about in the early days of the twentieth century when immigrants were coming into Ellis Island in The United States. Health officers there began to realize that children infected with measles and other viral diseases, but I'm speaking of measles particularly, had a certain mortality rate.
But if they were co infected with other things like streptococci or diphtheria, their mortality rate was much higher. This was an epidemiologic observation. A few years later, The United States entered World War I in 1917, the third year of the war. There were a number of army training camps set up which had a total population at a time as much as a million soldiers at a time. There were outbreaks of everything, a massive measles outbreak which ended up killing three thousand two hundred and six soldiers.
These soldiers died not of measles but of secondary bacterial pneumonia. One study, which is a particularly good study, cohorted soldiers that came in with measles. What they did is this, every soldier who presented with measles had a throat culture taken for group A beta hemolytic strep, strep pyogenes, or then it was called strep haemolyticus. Soldiers who had a positive culture were sent to one particular ward to be isolated for their measles, and soldiers who had negative cultures went to another ward and were re cultured every day. What they found was that of the complications and deaths, one hundred percent of those were in soldiers who were colonized, the strep.
Now nobody died of streptococcal disease per se. They died of secondary bacterial pneumonia and streptococci was found in their lungs. And the pneumonia pattern was bronchopneumonia and bronchopneumonia is a pattern in which the lesions, at least in the beginning of the process, are around the bronchial tree and I'll talk a little bit more about how that happens. So now we're coming to influenza, not measles. I think as most people know, the measles epidemic in 1918 was the single most fatal event in the history of the world.
Fifty to one hundred million people died. Laboratory here at NIH, one of our laboratories here at NIH, we obtained from the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology, pathology specimens from fifty eight soldiers who died in 1918 from influenza and recut and stained them and looked at them and found that one hundred percent of these 58 autopsy slides showed that death was associated with severe bacterial pneumonia. We also did a literature search of the era of 1918 and early nineteen nineteen We found every article we could find in 15 countries in multiple languages, 173 studies reporting autopsy results on over 8,000 people, soldiers and civilians, all of these having both pathology results and bacteriology results. What we found was that in ninety five percent of cases, there were pneumopathogens cultured from the lungs at autopsy. By pneumopathogens, mean bacteria that are normally or sometimes found in the upper respiratory tract of normal people, but which have the ability to cause severe pneumonia.
So ninety five percent of those autopsies in soldiers and civilians that had pleural effusions and the pleural effusions were cultured, eighty point four percent had these pneumopathogens. Significantly, of the people who died and who had blood cultures obtained before death, seventy percent had one or more positive blood culture. The pneumopathogens I mentioned were particularly three: Strep pneumoniae, which is pneumococcus Strep pyogenes or Group A beta hemolytic strep and Staphylococcus. But there were others as well. There were actually outbreaks in which fatal pneumonia associated with 1918 flu was caused by meningococcus, that is meningococcal pneumonia.
Those soldiers did not die of meningococcal meningitis or even meningococcemia. They died of meningococcal pneumonia. What are the lesions close-up that are associated with these co pathogenic infections? The viral lesions are fairly constant and that is the infection of apical cells of bronchiolar and bronchial respiratory epithelium. You can think of it as we know that the bronchial tract is lined with epithelial cells and there are goblet cells and mucin secreting cells and ciliated cells that protect the respiratory tract from anything going down.
These are the things that are destroyed. It's kind of like mowing the lawn. When the virus comes in, it mows the lawn. It strips away one cell layer thick of epithelium and then other bad things can happen. The 1918 pneumonias were almost all bronchopneumonias just as we saw a minute ago or I said a minute ago in talking about measles pneumonia.
There were bronchopneumonias and almost all of them were associated with massive infection but evidence of tissue repair was there. The virus did its thing but it repaired quickly and one would imagine that had these people not got secondary bacterial infections, they would have been fine. They would have recovered just like most of us recover from influenza. It's worth asking here what was the proximate cause of death. These people died of bacterial pneumonia, but that and that's something that would be written on the death certificate.
But how actually did they die? It's a little hard to tell from clinical notes written long before we had ICUs and the types of studies we can do now like oxygen tension and so on. But it appears to me at least from reading many, many of these autopsies and clinical reports that the causes of death were often from damage to the from hypoxia that resulted from either damage to the pulmonary tissue, there was just no more gas exchange or from alveolar edema. The alveoli actually were filled with water. Sometimes death appeared to result from sepsis and septic shock, presumably associated with multi organ failure And in some cases, not very often, death was due to heart failure or renal failure apart from multi organ failure or from late complications.
So by 1918, around the world pathologists understood that this co pathogenesis was what was killing people, the virus plus bacteria. A French physician said if Grip or influenza condemns the secondary infections, execute. The preeminent pathologist of the nineteen eighteen pandemic, William McCallum, a Canadian American, essentially said that he had never performed an autopsy of somebody who died of flu in which he didn't find bacteria. So just to sum up what I've said about measles and flu, there's these two pandemics in the military camps that were studied. One was 1917 measles, the other was 1918 flu.
A hundred percent of all US Army camps were involved. The deaths were large, the case fatality rate was large, bacteria that caused the deaths were largely the same, and the pathology with a minor exception or two, the pathology of measles pneumonia deaths and of flu pneumonia deaths were identical. This was essentially the same disease. McCallum noted that it appears there were two great epidemic outbreaks of pneumonia. The first closely associated with measles, the second following influenza.
In other words, he didn't think of these as epidemics of measles and influenza. He thought of them as epidemics of severe bacterial pneumonia, which just happened to be set off by the two prevailing viruses of that era. Now, it's not possible, of course, from an autopsy to look at natural history and pathogenesis because the person died only at one point in time. When autopsies are done, you can look at the tissues and find the lung tissue, for example, in different areas of the lung or in different stages of the process. By doing enough of these, you can develop a picture of the progression, the natural history of the disease as it evolved even though you're only seeing the snapshot, not the whole movie.
When you combine that with epidemiologic data, here's what seems to have happened. In both of these epidemics of measles and influenza in army camps, there were colonization, what I would call colonization epidemics of bacterial pneumopathogens. These soldiers come into camps, they're in crowded barric conditions. There are epidemics in which everybody becomes, almost literally almost everybody becomes colonized with strep or if it's a different situation with pneumococcus. Then a cytolytic virus comes along, a virus that mows the lawn of the respiratory epithelium and may go all the way down the respiratory tree.
The defenders against bacteria going out of the nose and throat and down into the lungs are gone. The defense is gone. The bacteria go down and adhere to the basal layer under the denuded epithelial cells, set up bacterial pneumonia, and this is what explains the pattern of bronchopneumonia as opposed to lobar pneumonia. And by the way, the same sort of patterns are seen in flu deaths today. Now fast forward a little bit to the modern era where we have experimental techniques.
Many researchers, including some at NIH, have begun to study viral bacterial co pathogenesis in experimental models, usually mice, not a very good model, it's easy, also in primates. I'm gonna discuss a little bit about that. In many mouse models and many laboratories, if you give an influenza virus, for example the nineteen eighteen virus or others, plus a bacterium like pneumococcus, the pathology is much worse. And that's true and the rapidity of death and the total death of the experimental animals

Speaker 0: My name is John Loftus. I, was an army officer, a federal prosecutor at the headquarters of the Justice Department in Washington. Then I worked for the office of special investigations, which was the Nazi war crimes unit that was set during the Carter and Reagan administrations. And unfortunately I discovered that many of the Nazis had been assigned to prosecute were already on the government payroll. I ended up being a whistleblower.
And in 1982, I appeared on an Emmy award winning segment of sixty Minutes. Mike Wallace got the Emmy award. My family got the death threats. It was a great trade off. And after that I went to private law in Boston and set up my own law firm for a while.
But over the years I've become a private lawyer for whistleblowers. And I charge my clients a dollar apiece. I'm the worst paid lawyer in America but among the better informed is in order to be a client you have to have a security clearance above top secret. I had a Q clearance for nuclear weapons secrets, an SI clearance which is the wiretapping NSA clearance and a cosmic clearance for everything in NATO that was top secret and above. So I could read the British intelligence files and the Dutch intelligence files as well as the American files.
And so I was the first person in a half a century that was able to go through the classified vaults where all these old intelligence files are stored. And they stored out in Suitland, Maryland, an interesting place. There were 20 secondurity vaults underground like bank vaults. And each vault is one acre in size. It's a little bit of Remember the last scene of Raiders of the Lost Ark?
Well, that's what the underground vaults are like, only not as organized. But I was looking for something unique, not just for files about Nazi war criminals, but evidence that might suggest that the hunt for Nazi war criminals had been obstructed. Evidence that the trials had been fixed. My first boss was a prosecutor of the Nuremberg trials, the bankers trial. And he was the one who told me that he thought the trials had been fixed.
That resources were taken away from him and the other people who were investigating the banks and forcing them to close down some of their investigations. So he and I had both been army officers who had intelligence training. And so I had two jobs. One was to investigate Nazis from the nation of Belarus that might have immigrated to America and also to look for evidence of this who fixed the Nuremberg Trials. Yeah.
And the two sort of clashed together which is why I ended up in sixty Minutes. What did

And so we took over the British networks after World War two, not realizing that the British weren't sending us freedom fighters.
They were sending us the dregs of the Nazi war criminals from the Arab states and from Eastern Europe. They were recruiting ex Nazi terrorists to fight World War three, and it was one of the most stupid and corrupt things that had ever done. But as I dug deeper and deeper in the files, I realized it really had nothing much to do with ideology. This is all about money. You know, Dulles wasn't just the nitwit that could con by Kim Philby into letting Nazi war criminals relocate to America.
Alan Dulles was a Wall Street corrupt corporate lawyer. And they had their own agenda. It wasn t about national security at all. Was about bankers security. It was all about the money.
Was about setting up new cartels, monopolies, and trusts. You know, the British dominated, for example, the oil fields on the Arabian Peninsula. So we used guys like Alan Dulles who then was in our State Department and we arranged to send guns and ammunition to, this rebel group of tribesmen led by Ibn Sa'ad, and that became the House of Sa'ad. And we we literally gave them the guns to put themselves in power in the nineteen thirties, And they took over Mecca and Medina. Unfortunately, their religious mindset was somewhere to the right of Attila the Hun.
They had a philosophy called Wahhabism or Salafism, which has been declared a heresy against Islam, you know, more than 60 times before 1900. But once they had oil, you know, all of a sudden the Saudis could buy legitimacy. The Dulles brothers are now borrowed under the government. Truman's been reelected. They have to hide the Nazi connection.
They have to hide the Saudi connection. They have to hide the Bolshevik connection. And it's business as usual. But it's not about an ideological conspiracy. I mean, they were funding the communist at the same time as they were funding the Nazis.
But this handful of really greedy people in Wall Street was just about making money.
Speaker 1: So an intelligence agency practices, best practices of the world over history, it offers plausible deniability when they externalize and use these other factions to kinda do their dirty work. Yes?
Speaker 0: Yeah. Over it's useful in a long period of time to have a proxy army if you will. For example, there was an Arab Nazi movement and it was called the Muslim Brotherhood run by a guy named Hassan Albanah, and he was founded in 1928. And he was a real admirer of Adolf Hitler. Wrote him letters all the time to the young Hitler saying, I like your philosophy.
I read your book. We gotta work together. And they did. The Muslim Brotherhood became the arm of the Abwehr, the German intelligence network in the Middle East. The Muslim Brotherhood were Nazi spies all over the Middle East, and they went from a half a million members to a three quarters of million members.
And Philby sold them to the Dulles brothers. And the when Nasser, the secularists, came to power in Egypt in the nineteen fifties, they had this huge army of Nazis running around their country and they threw them out. And Dulles went to the Saudis who were his business clients and asked them to take them in. And this gets really funny here. The Saudis agreed because the at least the Egyptian Nazis and the Muslim Brotherhood Nazis were literate.
So the Saudis gave them job as school teachers at the madrasas. And so young men like Osama bin Laden were literally educated by first generation Nazis. And the brother of the chief Nazi propagandist, Gatubb, was the guy who was the tutor for Osama bin Laden. So he had a perfect storm of Nazi racism and Saudi religious bigotry coming together with the relocation of the Muslim Brotherhood to Saudi Arabia. And this is the same Muslim Brotherhood that, you know, they were still fighting recently in Egypt.
They never went away. This is the second generation Nazis today. When you think about it, the Muslim Brotherhood and its offshoots Al Qaeda and Hamas, they're the same philosophy. They're they're against democracy, Western civilization. They hate the English and Americans and above all the Jews.
So nothing has changed. We're still fighting in the Middle East because Philby conned us conned Dulles into taking over the Muslim Brotherhood. You know, that was gonna be his proxy army of terrorists to fight the communist terrorists in the Middle East. And boy, we get suckered in.
Speaker 1: Well, let's talk about the Dulles brothers for a second. You state that Alan Dulles was one of the worst traitors in American history. Can you talk about the Dulles brothers in the context of the twenties, thirties and forties?
Speaker 0: In the twenties, thirties and forties, the Dulles brothers were helping the Wall Street Robber Barons take their money out of The United States and relocate it to friendly foreign fascists. You know, whether it was Saudi or or even the Bolsheviks in Russia or the German fascists because they could reestablish the monopolies that these guys loved. But also they knew that as Hitler came to power, he was turning on. And the very first law that Hitler passed when he came to power was to ban foreign ownership of German companies. So the Dulles brothers went to work on cloaking.

I think ethnic cleansing is a term that that's been fairly recently coined to describe population movement during war. And the reality is that's been ongoing for literally all of human history. The idea that that Israel is, quote, unquote, forcing people out of the Gaza Strip, that is not the stated policy of the Israeli government. The idea is if people want to leave, they can, but they're not being forced to leave.
Again, moving people out of heavily urbanized areas that are honeycombed with terrorist booby traps pretty much everywhere is not the same thing as, quote, unquote, ethnic cleansing. Speaker 0: Which is why I reiterate my belief that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal.
Speaker 1: As Mark Mazzetti from the New York Times points out today, the most detailed and damning report about Russian interference in the twenty sixteen election was produced by the Republican Majority Senate Intelligence Committee, was, wait for it, chaired by Marco Rubio.
Speaker 2: He wants to work with Vladimir Putin, claiming that this cybersecurity unit will prevent future election hacking and many other negative things. Will be guarded. What say you, sir?
Speaker 3: It's not the dumbest idea I've ever heard, but it's pretty close. I am sure that Vladimir Putin could be of enormous assistance in that effort since he's doing the hacking. Senator Marco Rubio, July nine two thousand seventeen, Partnering with Putin on a cybersecurity unit is akin to partnering with Assad on a chemical weapons unit. There should be no fuzz on this whatsoever. The Russians interfered in our election during 02/2016 cycle.

Speaker 0: As long as Bashar al Assad is in Syria, there will be radical elements in Syria, not just fighting to get rid of him, but fighting ultimately to spread that ideology to other places. That's why it's in our national security interest. That's why it should matter to all Americans as well. This is important for us as a people because it goes to the core of who we are, but it's also in our national security interest. And we can't ignore it.
We also can't ignore the countries that made this possible. If you are a country led by Vladimir Putin like Russia is, who is going before the world and saying this was the rebel, this wasn't the regime, that's absurd. That is fake news at its highest. It's grotesque. That they can say it with a straight face is even more troubling.
This would never be any possible had they not had the cover that Vladimir Putin has given Assad. And it leads to this question. Anyone who supports Bashar al Assad in doing these sorts of

Speaker 0: for him on the international stage and actually votes at international organisms to protect him from sanctions, they are, at a minimum, accomplices in war crimes, which is why I reiterate my belief that Vladimir Putin is a war criminal who is assisting another war criminal in killing his own people and gassing innocence. And for me, a statement is not enough. A resolution is important. It's not enough. ISIS is a radical Sunni Islamic group.
Speaker 5: I hope that the moment has arrived where under the White House and the administration, and I believe this is the case, realize that as long as Bashar al Assad is there, you're gonna have ISIS or you're gonna have al Nusra or some other radical element because his very presence and after the crimes he's committed against his own people, there will always be a radical element fighting against him until he is removed from power. And what are the risks? Well, I think the risks are, an escalation. We don't know what the Russians are going to do in response. And so far, it seems pretty measured, but, I certainly think that if there's an effort to remove Assad, they're going to get a little bit more aggressive.
Speaker 4: How would you remove him?
Speaker 5: Well, first of all, has to be removed through a combination of alternatives on the ground that are Syrians, not foreign fighters, not foreign forces. And, again, this reminds me of one of those cage matches in professional wrestling where you have, you know, 18 people in the in the ring, and sometimes they fight each other, then two of them turn on somebody else. You've got Hezbollah. You've got Iran. You've got, obviously, the Syrian forces.
You've got the Russians. You've got multiple rebel groups that are not jihadist. Then you have al Nusra and which is an al Qaeda group and their affiliates. And then you have ISIS, of course. So, ultimately, I think you've got to have a Sunni, which is the majority in Syria, a Sunni non jihadist alternative, which is what we should have done back in 02/2011.
And I hope now the work will begin to carve out a space for them to to be able to grow and and get more powerful so they can be a clear alternative to Assad and whatever happens, hopefully, a political negotiation, not continued bloodshed.
Speaker 6: You think specifically the comments by secretary of state Tillerson gave him license?
Speaker 5: Well, again, I don't I'm not saying that's why secretary Tillerson said it. I am saying that I do believe that it's not coincidental, that it's not coincidental that he was that he sees these statements out there, within a couple of days, he takes action. The important point is that's not what they're saying anymore. And not just not what they're saying, it's not what they're doing. They made it very clear last night.

Speaker 6: An op ed in The Hill says Putin is getting desperate. Part of it reads this way, desperation takes many forms in dictators. When despots get truly unhinged, they crush information as Putin did last week with his draconian censorship laws and press restrictions. Remember, the Russian military police went into a television station at one point. And this includes blocking Facebook and foreign news outlets, all of that.
And the Wall Street Journal reports Russia has been recruiting fighters from Syria for urban combat in Ukraine. The move points to a potential escalation of fighting in the region. Pete.
Speaker 4: Harris, I don't think he has another speed. It is double down and locked down. Locked down at home, descent through information and enforcement. He will do that. He's vulnerable there.
He knows that. He knows should word get out of the amount of casualties, should word get out of who the real aggressor is here. He's got serious domestic problems. So he will keep locking down, as the economy plummets. In fact, if I would encourage folks to go watch who is Vladimir Putin on Fox Nation.
It's great. It talks about I watched how he views human nature. It's it's good. It's good, and it helps you get an understanding of how he views human nature and how he views his his role in manipulating it and putting back the Soviet Union. When it comes to to to Ukraine, though, Harris, he's gonna double down on the tactics he believes will bring civilians to their knees.
You know why? He doesn't play by the rules of war. We call him a war criminal, and we do, and rightfully so. He doesn't care. Russia's not a signatory to the international criminal court.
He doesn't feel any threat that he'll be held accountable. Cease fires. You know what cease fires are for him? An opportunity to reload. An opportunity to pick more targets.
And he's already said I mean, this is a precarious part for Zelensky too. Zelensky did the right thing in saying, hey. Any man in this country, stay here, pick up a rifle, and fight. But in the twisted mind of Vladimir Putin, you know what that says? Every man in the country who was a civilian is now a military target.
That means any civilian target could be a military target. And women and children that are there are human shields for the men who are carrying Kalashnikovs. Think about it through the psychology of him. So we we talk about the targeting of civilians and rightfully so. He's saying those are now military targets, and he hasn't done it to Kyiv the way he's done it in other places like Mariupol.
