In 2006, Jimmy Carter boldly criticized Israel, labeling it a brutal, colonizing, apartheid state. He emphasized that the conflict's root cause was the sustained occupation of Palestinian land by Israelis, leading to acts of violence. Carter warned that supporting Israeli apartheid practices would diminish the US as a global power, similar to how the Suez Canal incident affected Great Britain. Comparisons were drawn between Israel's policies and Nazi Germany's treatment of Jews, highlighting the disparity in Western reactions. The devastating impact of Israel's bombings in Gaza, funded by US taxpayers, was likened to a small nuclear bomb.

Jimmy Carter bluntly calling Israel what it really is: a brutal, colonizing, apartheid state. This was in 2006, after Carter published a book “Palestine: Peace Not Apartheid” which drew attacks from the usual pro-Israeli apartheid hawks (Alan Dershowitz etc)…

Former President Jimmy Carter discusses his book "Palestine Peace, Not Apartheid" and explains why he used the word apartheid in the title. He clarifies that he is referring to the situation in the occupied territories, where Palestinians face severe human rights abuses. Carter emphasizes that he does not see any resemblance of apartheid within Israel itself. He compares the persecution of Palestinians to the oppression in Rwanda, stating that the current treatment of Palestinians is one of the worst examples of human rights abuse. He highlights the confiscation of Palestinian land, the building of settlements, and the restrictions on Palestinian movement as evidence of apartheid-like conditions. Carter distinguishes this form of apartheid from the racism-based apartheid in South Africa.

Speaker 0: Back to hardball. We're back with the 39th president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. His new book is called Palestine Peace, Not Apartheid. President Carter, why did you worse use the word apartheid in the book's title? Speaker 1: Well, let's look at the entire title, if you don't mind. The first word is Palestine, Which involves the land that belongs to the Palestinians, not the Israelis. I didn't refer to Israel because there's no semblance of anything relating to Apartheid within the nation of Israel. And I also emphasized the word not, that is peace and not apartheid. That's what I hope to accomplish with this book is some move with that goal. But there's no doubt that within the occupied territories, Palestinian land, that there is a horrendous example of apartheid. The, occupation of Palestinian land, the confiscation of that land that doesn't belong to Israel, The building of settlements on it, the colonization of that land, and then the connection of those isolated but multiple settlements, More than 200 of them with each other by highways on which Palestinians can't travel and quite often where Palestinians cannot even cross. So the persecution of the Palestinians now under the occupying territories is, you know, under the occupation forces. It is one of the worst examples of human rights deprivation that I know. And, I think it's Speaker 0: Even even worse though than a place like Rwanda? Speaker 1: Yes. I think yes. You mean now? Speaker 0: Yes. Oh, yeah. I think the impression now of the Israelis of the Palestinians by the Israelis is worse than a situation in Africa, like The oppression of Rwanda's and the and the civil war. Speaker 1: I'm not going back into ancient history about Rwanda, but right now, the the persecution of the Palestinians is of the worst examples of human rights abuse I know because of Palestinian Speaker 0: You're talking about right now. You're not talking about, say, a few years ago. Speaker 1: No. Speaker 0: Oh, Rwanda wasn't ancient history. It was just years ago. Speaker 1: You you could talk about Iran Rwanda if you want to. I wanna talk about Palestine. What what is being done to the Palestinians now It's horrendous. In their own territory, by the occupying powers, which is Israel. They've taken away all the basic human rights of the Palestinians As was done in South Africa against the blacks. And I make it very plain in this book that the, Apartheid is not Based on racism as it was in South Africa, but it's based on the desire

2. Jimmy Carter nailed it in 2006: “Root cause of the conflict is the sustained brutal occupation of Palestinian land by Israelis in direct violation of UN resolutions, in response to which there have been acts of violence.” Why are so many confused about who the aggressor is? https://t.co/MN8xKDih4n

The speaker criticizes Israel for the treatment of Palestinians, comparing it to apartheid in South Africa. They argue that Israel is motivated by a desire to acquire Palestinian land and exclude Palestinians from their own property. They highlight the lack of awareness and debate on this issue in the United States. The second speaker agrees and wishes for more open discussion. They ask about the responsibility of both Israelis and Palestinians in the conflict. The first speaker blames the conflict on Israel's occupation of Palestinian land, which violates international resolutions and commitments. They acknowledge acts of violence by Palestinians but do not excuse them.

Speaker 0: What what is being done to the Palestinians now is horrendous in their own territory by the occupying powers, which is Israel. They've taken away all the basic human rights of the Palestinians as was done in South Africa against the blacks. And I make it very plain in this book That the apartheid is not based on racism as it was in South Africa, but it's based on the desire of a minority of Israelis to acquire land that belongs to the Palestinians and to retain that land and then to exclude the Palestinians from their own property and subjugate them so that they can't arouse and demonstrate their disapproval of being robbed of their owned property. That's what's happening in in the West Bank and and the people in this country, in America, never know about this, they never discuss this, there's no debate about it, There's no criticism of Israel in this country. And in other in Israel, there's a there is an intense debate about the issues in this book. In this country, no. Speaker 1: I agree. I mean, I wish we had that sort of debate that they're having in Israel. Wish we had that in the United States. But give us a sort of sense. How much of the Responsibility for the conflict, Israeli Palestinian conflict, do you think belongs to the Israelis for their tactics like seizing land and occupying territory that didn't belong to them? How much So that is the responsibility of the Palestinians for their suicide terror attacks and their bombings within Israel proper? Speaker 0: Well, as a matter of The basic cause of the conflict is a sustained occupation of other people's land by the Israelis. And this is a direct violation of United Nations resolutions. It's a direct violation of the international quartets road map. It's a direct violation of the commitments that leaders of of Israel have made in the past at Camp David when I was president and in Oslo, Promising that Israel would withdraw from occupied territories. They have failed to do so. In response to that, and I'm not excusing them, There have been acts of violence. As a matter of fact, though

An airstrike targeted a shelter in Gaza, killing at least 14 Palestinians. The shelter housed a field hospital, resulting in devastating injuries and casualties. The attack is part of a pattern of relentless Israeli airstrikes on civilian areas, leaving many women and children dead or severely injured. The hospital is overwhelmed with victims, including children arriving in pieces. The use of lethal weapons with shrapnel and nails has caused catastrophic injuries, with many unable to survive. The situation is described as beyond catastrophic, with a high concentration of displaced families in the area. The attacks are indiscriminate and devastating to the civilian population.

Speaker 0: Airstrike has targeted a house east of Khan Yunus. At least 14 Palestinians have been killed in the attack in the town of Abassan. Their bodies and the injured have been taken to the already overwhelmed Nasser Hospital. Let's bring in our correspondent, Hani Mahmoud. He's joining us live from Deir al Bala in Central Gaza. Hani, we have been looking at frantic scenes of patients being rushed to hospitals after deadly attacks. Speaker 1: Yes. The past 15 minutes have been quite chaotic here at the hospital as it just in an instant of a span of a few minutes, the scene in the hospital turned from a very quiet into as you see, it's quite chaotic right now and it's overcrowded. The over the over the, the courtyard of the hospital is overcrowded with people. People are actually rushed from the shelter that is nearby the hospital. That's an evacuation center, the the western part of from the hospital all the way here and also the displaced population inside the hospital. At least 3 bombs fell on this shelter. The number of ambulance, almost every single ambulance vehicle here, including civilian vehicles rushed to the side. As we were told, this is an overcrowded shelter with many displaced families were inside when the attack happened. We literally we literally seen children coming in in pieces, shredded inside, wrapped in in white in white sheet or inside a plastic bag, torn into the hospital. The ambulance are still bringing more more of the injuries, more of the casualties from the shoulder that is nearby. The explosion was quite loud. It shook the area, as it it felt more of like a quake bombs that fell on the shelter. We don't we don't know exactly how many people, but the ambulance keep rushing, keep keep it is being dispatched to the shelter and bring back more of the casualties. At least a 1000 people were inside this shelter. That's the the estimation that we have. It also has many of the tents that were set up at the vicinity of this school. Now evacuation centers and areas are designed this way. People try to set up their tents near to each other. They have comfort when they have their own family members around them or people from their neighborhoods from where they were displaced. But as you see here, the scene, that's a crying mother right here at the ambulance. Just looking at the casualties, you're trying to identify if any of the family members who were in the school are inside this vehicle. Speaker 0: Yeah. Hani, it sounds like you have really been witnessing unspeakable, scenes of devastation, of unspeakable injuries, where you are. And we have been watching those live pictures from from where you are the last 15 minutes and what we are seeing now, an ambulance coming in, hundreds of people around it, patients being brought into the hospital. We have been watching those scenes, ambulance after ambulance, getting to that hospital, for at least the last 15:15 minutes. Hani, can you tell us about, the attack that you are talking about? You're saying it took place on a shelter. Is this the same as the attack in the town of Abassan? Speaker 1: Well, right now, what we're getting confirmed report that inside this shelter is a field hospital, and it was directly hit by one of these bombs. So there were already patients inside this field hospital in the shelter trying to get medically treatment. They were injured or killed in this attack. And this is the the the the part of the psychological warfare. There is nothing there is nothing or no place safe here, not even a field hospital inside the shelter. Humanitarian and should be protected by humanitarian international law. But we've seen those relentless Israeli air strikes targeting the shelter where displaced families have been sheltering inside for the past 9 months. And now what we're hearing is the field hospital inside, the shelter itself was was targeted, and many of the patients who were inside are among the casualties arriving, to the hospital. It's shocking to see the number of ambulance that's been been dispatched to the area, including civilian vehicles bringing injuries back to the hospital. This is the pattern of attacks, not only in in in Hanayun, it's in Abisan or other areas of Eastern Hanayun, but we've seen this pattern of attacks in Al Nusayirat a few weeks ago, where multiple schools in the span of 10 days were attacked and bombed by Israeli airstrike that were carried in the middle of the day or during the night, leaving hundreds of people killed. The vast majority of them were women and children. And just as of now, just looking at the the number of casualties, looking at the the people arriving here inside the ambulance, we're looking at completely 100% civilian population, women and children. People who are not injured. They're fully covered with the dust of the bombs and the buildings. And you can see that's already a dead person brought from the hospital and rushed out for burial. But also we've seen children and women and elderly soaked fully in blood. They're closed apart from the bodies that arrived in pieces fully shredded inside the hospital. This is the same exact pattern that we've seen over and over. This is in no way deliberate. A shelter full of of displaced civilians, displaced families, a field house. With the kind of technology employed in this war, there is no way to make mistake. A list somewhere in the in the chain of command, someone thought it was okay to bomb and to kill civilians sheltering inside inside an evacuation center and patients inside, a field hospital. Speaker 0: And Hani, I just want to warn our viewers that there is a possibility that we will see graphic images on our screens because this is these are live pictures coming to us from where our correspondent, Hani, is outside Al Aqsa Hospital in Deir al Bala where there are many people, many ambulances coming in after another deadly attack on a shelter, close to where I believe close to where our correspondent is. Hadi, you were saying that this is the pattern of attacks that we have seen in Gaza for more than 9 months now, but I want to ask how what you're seeing today compares, how you would describe the scale in in in what you're seeing in those ambulances coming in, the kinds of injuries that un really the unspeakable injuries that you are describing, that you've seen, how it compares, you know, to the scale of attacks we normally see. You mentioned all of those attacks on schools that were sheltering people, refugee camps, displacement centers that took place around a week ago in Central Gaza. And around a week ago, we did see one of the deadliest attacks, one of the deadliest weeks rather in Gaza since the war began when more than more than 450 people were killed. And so how would you describe what you're seeing around you now? Speaker 1: This is beyond catastrophic and tragic. The fact that we're seeing many of the civilians arriving in the ambulance and either they're they're fully soaked with the blood or they are in pieces or they're already killed, losing losing a limb or, they're already dead. It's just an indication that the Israeli military is not showing any any slowdown or lit up in the attacks across the across the Gaza Strip and mainly here in the central area where we see in the vast majority of displaced families have been pushed into this area more from more recently from Khan Unit City and Raqqa City when the Israeli military started its military maneuvers. And before that, many of the people who left left the northern part in Gaza, they poured into the central area. According to United Nations, we're looking at least 1,700,000 people are concentrated in the central, area, at least 800,000 of them in Deir Eberla city. That's a very small area already packed with people, displaced people from the northern part in Gaza, and the number has increased with the more recent recurrent incursions of of Eastern Khan Yunus and more the past couple of months when people were pushed into further internal displacement in Dhruvaha city. The one thing that we we're certain about is the kind of injuries here that we're seeing have been subjugated to lethal weapons. The kind of bombs that are dropped, unpredictable rockets and missiles and bombs falling on their homes or their shelters. They are packed with trap nuts. They're packed with nails. They're packed with little pieces of metals that when they're flying at a high speed, they cut through the arteries, they cause severe bleeding. And it doesn't it it doesn't take time. It doesn't take time for any of the casualties arriving here to be pronounced dead as they lose so much blood on the way that they've been transferred from the bomb site all the way to the hospital. So far, what we're looking at at 8 8 people have been killed and already transferred to the morgue of the hospital. The majority of them, women and children. And we've seen them being transferred already, inside the the morgue of the hospital. As you can see it's in the frame, the entrance of the emergency department is quite chaotic right now and overcrowded with people, either people from who are sheltering inside the hospital or these are the family members who have someone sheltering inside the the the field hospital or the schools that just being that was targeted in the past half half an hour. To to just to put a little bit of context here, just 45 minutes before the attack happened and and I was doing my live report here, The sounds of the drones in the background was so irritating. It it the the drones flew at a very low level in the area, and we were just talking to each other. We know we know that the moment that we see these sky predators, these attack drones or surveillance drones, we know something bad is going to happen. And we were just talking about unpredictable bombs that is going to fall somewhere here. And just within minutes of talking, we heard the explosion of the 3 bombs that were dropped on the shoulder and the field hospital, inside of it. This ambulance is backing up right now, and that's a sign that the people inside the ambulance are already dead. They are taking them to the morgue. There is no point of rushing them to the emergency department because they're really they were really dead at the site as a result of the intensity of the attack and the the the fact that it's it's quite destructive. The kind of bombs as one doctor described when we interviewed them within the past weeks. They talk about the kind of weapons that are used. They're very lethal. Apart from the fact that they are packed with these shrapnels and and and nails that cut through cut through the flesh and cause severe bleeding, it also caused severe burns. And those burns, unfortunately, with the lack of medical supplies, necessary pain medicine, Most of the time people do not have a chance of surviving these severe burns and die within days, within a week maximum of their arrival to the hospital. And there are cases that we documented at the ICU in the past couple weeks of people arriving. And within couple of days, they were they died because of the severe burn. Here's the thing. These are lethal weapon that dropped on a civilian population and a children. There is no way there is no way that they're going to survive the attacks. The we are we are here at the hospital. We could feel the intensity of the explosion. Imagine the people who were inside the shelter who have to experience this firsthand. What have gone through their heads when it happened?
