I heard an interview that you did in Cairo in the 1st few days of the war. You were talking about how concerned you are then about the health Care system in Gaza and how it was on its knees. Here we are a 100 days in. Did you imagine it would get to where it has? Speaker 1: I consider myself a fairly cynical person when it comes To what kind of atrocities that superpowers and military, forces can do, but I had never in my wildest fantasy That I would sit here today together with you and, discuss the atrocities of a magnitude that I cannot Recall to have seen in modern history. I'm dressed in black today to commemorate the 24,000 killed Palestinians And the 61,000 wounded, an almost unimaginable number of 85,000 Palestinian men, women, and children killed or wounded within the time span of a 100 days and a health care that is not only shattered, But where they have ruined the majority, thirty out of 36 hospital and 54 healthcare stations And killed, as you said, more than 300 healthcare workers. It is unprecedented. And when I see the videos coming from Gaza today, What people are using forced to use donkey carts to carry wounded and killed Palestinians because more than a 100 ambulances have been targeted and shot to pieces by the Israeli occupation forces. I think what we're looking at is a massive Moral failure and a moral breakdown of international order and of control with the arms And the way that arms are used in colonial projects, it's a sad day. But at the same time, it is a day to also Salute to the very brave Palestinian health care workers, the doctors, the nurses, the paramedics, the medical students All over Gaza who have not only risked and risked their lives as we are speaking, but who have been standing tall together with their patients and their people in support of life, Not bad. Speaker 0: And, Mads, as you say, many of the hospitals have been bombed. The few that do still operate don't have power to function properly. They don't have the medical staff. What is your understanding of the availability of medical care On the ground now in the south of Gaza and in the north. Speaker 1: Very good point that you're asking about The North because in the North, the situation is beyond desperate. I just had a call from the, mayor of Gaza City today. And they told me that they have not received a drop of fuel, since the emergency supplies, started to come in and, of course, Gaza City mostly, have been forcefully emptied of people. There are still, Six digit, thousands of people living in the north and needing medical supply and being bombed. Chief of hospitals still still has has, patients but have almost no, medical function. So it's more like a first aid station. As for the hospitals in the south, we know that Al Aqsa hospital is being bombed. We know that the 2 medical, international teams that were there from MSF and from MAP have left because of the dangers. And we know that the Israeli occupation army are shooting artillery shells straight into the ICU department. So it is a horrible situation and the healthcare Capacity is, of course, not sufficient at all to handle this massive number of 61,000 injured. And add to that, not only the staff, the number of staff and the bed capacity, but they are lacking everything. They don't have antibiotics. They don't have anesthetic drugs. They don't have IV fluids. They don't have disinfectants because of a systematic man made health disaster. Remember, this is not a volcanic eruption in Iceland. This is planned and executed by the Israeli government with full support from the US. It's the worst man made medical disaster in modern history, actually. And it goes on on the 100th day. So I think what we all need to realize now is that thousands of more people will be getting killed the coming days, Not only from the bombing, but from the infectious diseases, from hunger and from hypothermia. I checked the weather forecast. We're going down to 6, 5 to 6 centigrades Celsius at nighting also the coming days. There will be rain, and the tents are single layer summer sort of tents. There will be a massive, threat of, accidental hypothermia, cooling of the children and the fragile people and the pregnant women. All of this together, we probably take more lives unnecessarily than the lives taken by the bombing itself. So this is a Planned, calculated, premeditated mass murder at the industrial level of the Palestinian people. And it as I said, It's a massive moral breakdown. I I don't understand how more than a 150 nations in the UN General Assembly can vote for ceasefire. And yet 2 nations, the United States and Israel, continue to just oppose any medical advice, any reality, any statistics of the horrors of the situation in Gaza without being stopped. Speaker 0: And one day, this war will be Then there will be the daunting task of rebuilding. Where do you even start? How long would it take to build up The medical infrastructure that has been decimated in the last 100 days. Speaker 1: Extremely important question. And and I hate To to be a white Norwegian sitting in Norway and having to answer that question because I think the Palestinian minister of health, doctor Yousaf Abris Doctor Ahmed, the, the head of the international cooperation committee in the, Ministry of Health in Gaza, should be the ones and can be the ones to answer that. They say to me when I discuss this important point, they say We are ready to reopen the hospitals in Gaza, the Palestinians' hospitals. You know, before this started, thirty Four out of 36 Palestinian hospitals were functioning at a certain level. There had been 16 years of siege. Yes, there were deficiencies, But they were functioning. Today, we're down to maybe 6. 30 of them has been, have been closed down. But they are not that damaged. Once you turn on the electricity, the fuel supply, the water supply, the food supply, and the medical supplies, They can start functioning again. And the medical staff, doctors, nurses, paramedics can move from their forcefully deplaced displaced position in the south Up to the hospitals and start working in the hospitals again. So I think what is the most impress pressing, demand now, It is, first of all, from a medical point of view, number 1 prescription from all doctors I talk to, Internationals and Palestinians, it is stop the bombing immediately. Immediate lasting ceasefire. Number 2, Open the border immediately. Open Rafa. Open multiple entries to Gaza and have an unhindered influx of humanitarian supplies not controlled by Israel, but controlled by the United Nations, allow sufficient medical teams to come And start immediately to rebuild and fit the Palestinian hospitals and the Palestinian health care system So that that can function. Don't make Gaza and also the West Bank into a donor dependent unity that cannot use their own resources because they're perfectly capable to do that. And then I think also, We need to support the, proceedings in the international criminal court and hold Israel accountable for these massive crimes Against the health care system and patients and and the population in Gaza at large because this impunity Has led to the situation we are in now. Israel has never been held accountable for their previous massive attacks On health care, this is nothing new to us who have been working in Gaza and in the West Bank for decades. They are always Attacking health care ambulances, hospitals are killing health care workers, but this has never been any, Investigation and accountability on the Israeli part. If they get away with this, these 100 days without any kind of punishment and legal actions. We are entering a very dark period in our history where the new colonialists are Willing to and able to and can unpunished it, be attacking new territories, new countries And, and and performed the same mass killings that we've seen these last 100 days.
