Israel's actions in Gaza have sparked a debate about whether they constitute genocide. While intent is difficult to prove, evidence suggests that Israel's systematic targeting of various civilian infrastructure, along with its chosen bombs and methods, has resulted in a high number of civilian casualties. Experts, including genocide scholars, have weighed in on the matter. However, a thorough international investigation is needed to determine if genocide has occurred. It's important to note that Hamas' actions should also be scrutinized, but they don't negate the potential genocidal nature of Israel's actions. Ultimately, the lack of accountability due to Israel's non-participation in the ICC raises concerns.

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Alright, since you decided to ask me, I'll tell you why the same guy you praise for "wonderful analysis" also concludes, based on the facts & evidence, that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza:

@IsabellaPfaff - Isabella Pfaff

How can someone who writes such a wonderful analysis make the claim that Israel is committing genocide in Gaza. This is neither backed up by facts nor scientifically tenable by the definition of the word. It is simply wrong. And discredits the very good thread.

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

There are multiple definitions of genocide, but the most widely cited is the 2002 Rome Statute's, which established the International Criminal Court (ICC). Around 120 countries are signatories (notably the US and Israel still refuse to sign it):

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Right off the bat let's debunk some common misconceptions about "genocide": You don't have to exterminate *everyone* for it to be genocide. Genocide is not a crime of body count (although body count matters). Genocide is a crime of *intent*.

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

The bar for the crime of genocide is met when there's intent to *destroy*, in whole or in part, a people. "Destroy" can manifest in many ways - killing is one, but also inflicting upon them unlivable conditions. "Conditions calculated to bring about the group's destruction".

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Since intent is key, let's focus on it. Normally*, whoever commits genocide won't go out and say "hey we'd like to wipe these people out". Normally, they hide their intent, and intent is typically the most difficult part to prove. (Hold on to the word "normally" for a sec please)

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Since intent is rarely explicit, the law allows it to be *inferred* from broader context including: - Scale & systematic nature of the violence - Chosen methods - Choices of victims/targets - Evidence of cover up - Patterns of narratives/speech used by political/military leaders

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Alright, so let's for a sec follow the "inference" route. It is now very well documented that Israel systematically targeted: - Hospitals - Water tanks - Solar panels - Journalists - Bakeries - Fishing boats - Schools - Ambulances - Residential blocks - Aid & UN workers

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

(I don't have to go point by point because all of the above is *very* well documented and even captured live). It's also well documented that Israel's chosen bombs/methods are indiscriminate (easily proven by the fact that ~70% of the 12k dead are women, children, or elderly).

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

It is also well documented that Israel: - Cut off the flow of food, water, & fuel to a civilian population - Targeted basic telecom infrastructure (internet, phone service) - Used easy-to-debunk disinfo & lies to pin the blame for *every* one of its atrocities on the other side

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

I know the typical US reaction would be "but Hamas!" To them Hamas is hiding in water tanks and solar panels. But if this is about Hamas, someone explain why 150+ Palestinians (incl 40+ children) have been killed in the West Bank, where there's no Hamas?

@rulajebreal - Rula Jebreal

Israeli Settler violence, aimed at depopulating Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank, skyrocketed under Netanyahu's far-right gov’t. Since Oct 7th, settlers’ terrorism against Palestinians has exploded. 150 Palestinians killed incl. 41 children.

When we hear the bullet, we start running down to discover what is going on. So we start calling each other. We cannot hear Bilal voice. Speaker 0: Hazem says he found Bilal face down, covered in blood. He wasn't buried. No Speaker 1: under this ones. Nothing. Speaker 0: Hazem, another West Bank Palestinians, tell us settler violence has spiked since Hamas' October 7th shocks. Their raids were brazen, they say, and sometimes aided by the Israeli military. A small time vendor of mountain herbs, Bilal shot left behind 4 young children. His mother-in-law, Munna Saleh, says his death hasn't quite sunk in yet. Shot. His mother tells him daddy passed away. We buried him, Muna says. But he doesn't believe it.

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Anyway: It's also well documented that Israeli ministry of intel produced a multi-stage plan for inflicting mass suffering on the population of Gaza to force them off their land and into the Sinai desert. So far Israel is following this plan actually:

@972mag - +972 Magazine

An Israeli Intelligence Ministry document revealed by @mekomit and +972 shows how policy proposals for forced population transfer from Gaza to the Sinai are reaching official discussions. @yuval_abraham reports. https://www.972mag.com/intelligence-ministry-gaza-population-transfer/

Expel all Palestinians from Gaza, recommends Israeli gov't ministry An Intelligence Ministry document revealed by Local Call and +972 shows how population transfer to the Sinai is reaching official discussions. 972mag.com

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

(The above is important because while "ethnic cleansing" is not by itself a crime under the Rome Statute, it is widely acknowledged that there's a continuum between genocide & ethnic cleansing. Genocide is often a way to ethnically cleanse a people or force a population transfer)

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

It's also uncontroversial that Israel's leaders have repeatedly and systematically used language & references that makes it clear that *everyone* in Gaza, and not only Hamas, is a target. Israel's PM even tweeted it, and not just once:

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Okay so now that we get to the speech/rhetoric of Israeli leadership, we can drop the pretense that we have to "infer" genocidal intent. There's *so much* documented. Remember I told you to hold on to that "normally" a few tweets ago? Yeah, you can stop holding on to it now

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

There are several folks who have been collecting these statements of intent. One of them is br Abu Bakr Hussain who's updating a list daily and has it available for download as well. Not everything in his list is from politicians/leadership, but a lot is:

@muhammadshehad2 @m7mdkurd Craig Mokhiber worked at the UN for 30+ years and until recently was director of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights' NY office. Listen to him explain how normally intent is the hardest to prove, but in this case, intent "is an easy case to make":

@MiddleEastEye - Middle East Eye

In his resignation letter dated 28 October, Craig Mokhiber, who served as the director of the New York office of the UN’s High Commissioner for Human Rights, labelled Israel's military operations in Gaza as “textbook genocide”

Video Transcript AI Summary
Proving genocide requires showing intent to destroy a specific group. In this case, Israeli leaders' intent has been clearly and publicly stated by the prime minister, president, cabinet ministers, and military leaders. This makes it easy to make a case for genocide, as their statements are on the public record.
Full Transcript
Speaker 0: Crucially, the most difficult part of proving genocide is intent because there has to be an intention to destroy in whole or in part a particular group. In this case, the intent by Israeli leaders has been so implicitly stated and publicly stated by the prime minister, by the president, by senior cabinet ministers, by military leaders, that that is an easy case to make. It's on the public record.

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

@muhammadshehad2 @m7mdkurd But now that we're citing experts, let's mention how so many *actual genocide scholars* have assessed that Israel is committing the crime of genocide. Again there's so much of this that I can't fit it all in a thread but some are under this tweet:

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Is someone collecting all the statements & opinions by actual genocide scholars & researchers whose professional assessment that what is happening in Gaza right now is genocide? If you do please link. If you don't please retweet

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

@muhammadshehad2 @m7mdkurd An important voice has been Arnesa Buljušmić-Kustura (@Rrrrnessa), who is both an academic expert on genocide and a survivor of genocide. But there's also Luis Moreno Ocampo, ex-ICC prosecutor. And Raz Segal, an Israeli expert on modern genocide: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZWGGjLZNuyg

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

@muhammadshehad2 @m7mdkurd @Rrrrnessa (Btw correct me if I'm wrong but even in the case of the Bosnian genocide & the Iraqi Kurdish genocide, explicit public statements of intent were relatively scarce and intent had to be inferred from chain of command orders & military tactics/context. Here it's more explicit.)

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

@muhammadshehad2 @m7mdkurd @Rrrrnessa So yes: I write some decent threads on geopolitical analysis. Yes: I'm a human being who gets exhausted and triggered. But when I say Israel is committing genocide it's not hyperbole. It's a conclusion based upon the facts & evidence, and the conclusion of many noted experts.

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Ultimately whether or not it's genocide will have to be determined through a thorough international independent investigation, followed by a fair, balanced, public trial. But we *know* we won't get that. Israel & the US are not party to the ICC. Israel is above the law.

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

I can still hear them say "but Hamas!" - Hamas very likely committed war crimes & crimes against humanity on Oct 7 - Israel's actions since Oct 7 (fully backed by the West) can credibly be described as genocidal No contradiction there

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

Finally: I know all of this will not make any difference to many people who have enthusiastically swallowed the Israeli propaganda & disinfo echoed by racist political & media institutions in the West. No amount of evidence will work on them. Why? This:

@iyad_elbaghdadi - İyad el-Baghdadi | إياد البغدادي

It's not that they're stupid, it's not that they're thick, it's not that they're uninformed or misinformed, it's not that you just have to explain it to them just one more time. It's that they're racist. Once you see it you'll never unsee it.

Speaker 0: I want to get your response to this that happened in early November, when dozens of Israeli doctors circulated the following statement on social media. They said the residents of Gaza who saw fit to turn the hospitals into terrorist nests in an attempt to take advantage of western morality are the ones who brought their destruction upon themselves. Terrorism must be eliminated everywhere and in any way. Attacking terrorist headquarters located inside a hospital is the right and even the duty of the IDF. For me, it seemed particularly shocking given how I thought, despite your political affiliation once again, that every doctor, you know, pledges the Hippocratic oath. And so I I don't know how your reaction was to this letter that was circulating of doctors actually urging the IDF, yes, bomb hospitals. Speaker 1: Well, it it goes against everything that is the essence of providing health care to people. I'm not just a part of a humanitarian NGO. I'm not just an emergency room physician, but I'm also the director of medical ethics for our emergency department. And this is outrageous. There's not a single respectable person in the entire medical community or in the bioethics community that would that would agree with anything that was just said. You cannot bring politics and policy into health care because when you start doing that, then you're going to inevitably develop inequities towards whoever it is. That's just what happens. You cannot bring any sort of preconceived notions because down the line, somewhere somewhere, there's a patient that you think could be excluded from health care, could be excluded from being treated, can be excluded from just basic human rights. And so this is, you know, it's not only inaccurate, all of the things that they're saying, but it goes against everything that we're trying to preach about health care. It goes against every stance that people took in Ukraine when a hospital was hit or when a hospital was targeted. And so I would say the same energy that we had with health care systems and the hospital systems, in Ukraine is the same energy you need to have in the Gaza Strip. And if you don't have that, if you don't have that sort of same approach, principled approach, that moral consistency, then we shouldn't be listening to anything you have to say. And, I mean, that's I have that same problem with, you know, the American Medical Association and many professional societies here in the States. They have not even uttered a single word saying protect these health care workers. I think it goes towards these super racist undertones, but it's also this approach towards that area, towards that conflict. It's just justify it in any way that you can. And, yes, the numbers coming out of the health ministry in the Gaza Strip are not accurate. They're not reliable, and it's because they're underreported. The number is astronomically higher, and we know this from respected NGOs like the Euromet Monitor. They're saying there's so many people trapped beneath the rubble. There's so much underreporting taking place at these partially functioning hospitals. I hope that there will be this sort of day of reckoning when we can kind of at least say you didn't stand on the right side of history, but you also were a disgrace to your profession. You have no reason to have any sort of platform to speak on any subject because of this sort of silence. And I hope that day comes soon. I mean, I hope that there is, you know, a resolution for the people in the Gaza Strip, and then we can kind of hold people accountable as a result of that.

I believe that Anti-Arab, Islamophobic, and Anti-Palestinian rhetoric has been overlooked for too long. Real antisemitism also needs recognition, as some use it politically against those advocating for justice in Palestine. Racism is the underlying issue affecting many in Western political systems.

@FranceskAlbs - Francesca Albanese, UN Special Rapporteur oPt

For far too long AntiArab, Islamophobic and Anti-Palestinian rethorics have been invisibilised. Also invisibilised is real antisemitism (hate against the Jews as Jews) - Many found more poltically convenient to weaponise antisemitism against those asking for justice and rights in Palestine. Racism is the common root of these diseases, which regrettably still runs deep in many western political élites and systems.

Mordechai Brafman, a 28-year-old pro-Israel extremist, fired 17 shots at a father and son in Miami Beach, mistakenly believing he had killed them. He later expressed satisfaction, claiming he had killed two Palestinians. Ironically, the victims were Israeli tourists who responded by chanting 'Death to Arabs' on social media. This incident highlights the deep-rooted anti-Palestinian hate and indoctrination prevalent in pro-Israel communities. I'm increasingly worried about the rise of militant Zionist extremism in the U.S., particularly from groups like the Jewish Defense League and @Betar_USA, which pose a threat to all communities.

BREAKING: Mordechai Brafman, 28, a pro-Israel fanatic, fired 17 shots at a father and son in Miami Beach, injuring both. Believing he had killed them, he smiled and told police, “I killed two Palestinians.” Where was he radicalized? And where are the congressional hearings to address this rising hate against Palestinians and Arabs?

@KashifMD - Kashif Chaudhry

Ironically, the victims were Israeli tourists. And right after being shot, they took to social media chanting 'Death to Arabs.' You can't make this up. This is the result of anti-Palestinian hate & indoctrination that sadly runs deep in Israel and pro-Israel communities in U.S. https://t.co/y13D6aM96Y

@KashifMD - Kashif Chaudhry

I’m deeply concerned about the rise of militant Zionist extremism in the U.S. Groups like the Jewish Defense League have a history of violence, and recent activities by organizations such as @Betar_USA are terrifying and alarming. These Jewish terrorists have also targeted fellow Jews opposing their aggressive ideologies. It’s imperative law enforcement address this escalating threat to ensure the safety of all communities.

HR 193 directs the Secretary of Health and Human Services to issue guidance on Medicare payments for artificial intelligence items. The plan is to release AI biotechnical medical devices for the sick and elderly, funded by taxpayer dollars via Medicare. These devices will be framed as life-changing, restoring senses, relieving pain, or prolonging life. The speaker claims this is a scheme to turn parents and grandparents into data variables by testing technologies on vulnerable groups. The speaker draws a parallel to mRNA vaccines, expressing concern about unforeseen consequences and the selection of vulnerable populations as test subjects.

Speaker 0: Our HR one nine three. So, this bill is called to direct the secretary of health and human services to issue guidance on payment under the Medicare program for certain items involving artificial intelligence. So essentially, what we're seeing here is they're they plan on releasing biotechnical medical devices for the sick and the elderly that will be approved under Medicare so that when we do start forcing these AI biotech, know, technocratic prison accessories onto these sick and dying people, It's not only going to be funded by taxpayer dollars, but they're going to be targeting the the the elderly and the sick, the ones that qualify for Medicare. And what's going to happen is they're going to begin to emotionally manipulate people. They're going to proposition how, you know, these certain AI devices are going to, you know, change the life of someone that you love and restore senses or will leave pain or, prolong life. And essentially what they are trying to do is, get you and the rest of us taxpayers to subsidize turning our parents and grandparents into data variables because these are going to be the first people that they're going to be testing these technologies on. Much like with the mRNA vaccines, there's no telling what's going to happen. And the fact that they are choosing some of the most vulnerable groups in the country to be the test bed for these things is extremely concerning.
