6. At the onset of the pandemic, according to meeting notes, the Trump admin was especially concerned about panic buying. They came looking for “help from the tech companies to combat misinformation” about “runs on grocery stores.” But . . . there were runs on grocery stores.

7. It wasn’t just Twitter. The meetings with the Trump White House were also attended by Google, Facebook, Microsoft and others.

8. When the Biden admin took over, one of their first meeting requests with Twitter executives was on Covid. The focus was on “anti-vaxxer accounts.” Especially Alex Berenson:

9. In the summer of 2021, president Biden said social media companies were “killing people” for allowing vaccine misinformation. Berenson was suspended hours after Biden’s comments, and kicked off the platform the following month.

11. A December 2022 summary of meetings with the White House by Lauren Culbertson, Twitter’s Head of U.S. Public Policy, adds new evidence of the White House’s pressure campaign, and cements that it repeatedly attempted to directly influence the platform.

12. Culbertson wrote that the Biden team was “very angry” that Twitter had not been more aggressive in deplatforming multiple accounts. They wanted Twitter to do more.

13. Twitter executives did not fully capitulate to the Biden team’s wishes. An extensive review of internal communications at the company revealed employees often debating moderation cases in great detail, and with more care than was shown by the government toward free speech.

14. But Twitter did suppress views—many from doctors and scientific experts—that conflicted with the official positions of the White House. As a result, legitimate findings and questions that would have expanded the public debate went missing.

15. There were three serious problems with Twitter’s process: First, much of the content moderation was conducted by bots, trained on machine learning and AI – impressive in their engineering, yet still too crude for such nuanced work.

16. Second, contractors, in places like the Philippines, also moderated content. They were given decision trees to aid in the process, but tasking non experts to adjudicate tweets on complex topics like myocarditis and mask efficacy data was destined for a significant error rate

17 Third, most importantly, the buck stopped with higher level employees at Twitter who chose the inputs for the bots and decision trees, and subjectively decided escalated cases and suspensions. As it is with all people and institutions, there was individual and collective bias

19. Inevitably, dissident yet legitimate content was labeled as misinformation, and the accounts of doctors and others were suspended both for tweeting opinions and demonstrably true information.

20. Exhibit A: Dr. Martin Kulldorff, an epidemiologist at Harvard Medical School, tweeted views at odds with US public health authorities and the American left, the political affiliation of nearly the entire staff at Twitter.

21. Internal emails show an “intent to action” by a moderator, saying Kulldorff’s tweet violated the company’s Covid-19 misinformation policy and claimed he shared “false information.”

22. But Kulldorff’s statement was an expert’s opinion—one which also happened to be in line with vaccine policies in numerous other countries. Yet it was deemed “false information” by Twitter moderators merely because it differed from CDC guidelines.

23. After Twitter took action, Kulldorff’s tweet was slapped with a “Misleading” label and all replies and likes were shut off, throttling the tweet’s ability to be seen and shared by many people, the ostensible core function of the platform:

24. In my review of internal files, I found countless instances of tweets labeled as “misleading” or taken down entirely, sometimes triggering account suspensions, simply because they veered from CDC guidance or differed from establishment views.

25. A tweet by @KelleyKga, a self-proclaimed public health fact checker, with 18K followers, was flagged as “Misleading,” and replies and likes disabled, even though it displayed the CDC’s *own data.*

26. Internal records showed that a bot had flagged the tweet, and that it received many “tattles” (what the system amusingly called reports from users). That triggered a manual review by a human who– despite the tweet showing actual CDC data–nevertheless labeled it “Misleading”

27. Tellingly, the tweet by @KelleyKga that was labeled “Misleading” was a reply to a tweet that contained actual misinformation. Covid has never been the leading cause of death from disease in children. Yet that tweet remains on the platform, and without a “misleading” label.

What happened next? Facebook panicked. In another April 2021 email, Brian Rice, Facebook’s VP of public policy, raised the concern that Slavitt's challenge felt “very much like a crossroads for us with the [Biden] White House in these early days.”

But Facebook wanted to repair its relationship with the White House to avoid adverse action: “Given what is at stake here, it would also be a good idea if we could regroup and take stock of where we are in our relations with the [White House], and our internal methods too.”

This wasn’t the first time that the Biden White House was angry that Facebook didn’t censor more. According to these documents, the Biden White House demanded to know why Facebook had not censored a video from @TuckerCarlson. So, Facebook prepped its response.

To appease the Biden White House, talking points were drafted for Clegg. Facebook was ready to tell the White House that it had demoted a video posted by Tucker Carlson by 50% in response to the White House’s demands, even though the post didn’t violate any policies.

Trans-victimization For many Americans, extending rights to trans people aligns with past movements to extend rights to women, racial minorities, gays, and lesbians. In the same way that women and girls deserved female-only spaces and sports, which they achieved in the 1964 Civil Rights Act, transwomen should be allowed to compete in women’s sports. But many people who believe this do not understand that many transwomen, including the swimmer Lia Thomas, have entirely intact male genitalia. And not only must biological women compete with Thomas in public, but they must also share a locker room in private. Few people support denying the rights of trans people to live safely and freely. But what of the rights of women athletes? And what of the rights of women athletes who are the survivors of sexual assault? Such were the questions raised by Paula Scanlan, a former NCAA female swimmer. Yesterday she testified before Congress and presented some shocking information. “My teammates and I were forced to undress in the presence of Lia, a six-feet-four-inch tall biological man fully-intact with male genitalia, 18 times per week,” Scanlan said. “Some girls opted to change in bathroom stalls, and others used the family bathroom to avoid this.” This was particularly traumatizing for Scanlan, she said, since a man had sexually assaulted her in a bathroom just a few years earlier. “I know of women with sexual trauma who are adversely impacted by having biological males in their locker room without their consent. And I am one of these women. I was sexually assaulted on June 3, 2016, in a bathroom.” Rather than respond with human decency, the University of Pennsylvania sided with political correctness. “When we tried to voice our concern to the Athletic Department,” said Scanlan, “we were told that Lia swimming and being in our locker room was non-negotiable and we were offered psychological services to attempt to re-educate us to become comfortable with the idea of undressing in front of a male.” All of this happened just last year. Scanlan spoke out in an op-ed for the Daily Pennsylvanian, the University of Pennsylvania’s student newspaper. “I approached this from a scientific, statistical perspective,” she said, “where I used my engineering background to discuss how Y-chromosomes cannot be changed by any surgical procedure or systemic therapy. This biological fact lends itself to athletic advantages that cannot be mitigated by lowering testosterone levels, which are readily apparent in sports competitions and locker rooms.” Can you guess what happened next? “Only a few hours later,” writes Scanlan, “my piece was retracted. I was given no notice, nor reasoning. Again, I was silenced for my dissenting viewpoint and felt my First Amendment Rights were denied by my university. “This is representative of a greater issue, the destruction of free speech. Today any discussion of maintaining the sanctity of women’s spaces is labeled transphobic, bigoted, and hateful.” The good news is that Americans appear to be coming to their senses. The share of Americans who say transgender athletes should only be allowed to compete on sports teams that conform with their birth gender rose from 62% in 2021 to 69% this year. The UK-based Center for Countering Digital Hate (CCDH) claimed that @RobertKennedyJr & 11 others were responsible for 65% “of anti‑vaccine content circulating on social media.” But CCDH’s absurd claim about the so-called “Disinformation Dozen” was itself disinformation.

First, that 65% stat? CCDH was off by quite a bit. Facebook knew the actual number was closer to 0.05%. Second, despite attacking @RobertKennedyJr and the others as the so-called “Disinformation Dozen,” a lot of their accounts were “completely benign” according to Facebook.

As Facebook admitted internally, a lot of these accounts were just Americans expressing “vaccine hesitancy,” which is often “not misinfo,” even under Facebook’s policies.

The CCDH published its report on March 24, 2021. By April 2021, Facebook employees were preparing a draft memo to Mark Zuckerberg about “pressure from … the White House” to remove the Disinfo Dozen even though they did “not believe we currently have a clear path for removal.”
