Boeing offers condolences for the death of a passenger and expresses sympathy for the injured. The incident occurred when a Boeing 777 plane experienced a sudden drop of 6000 feet, causing passengers to be thrown into the ceiling.

JUST IN: Boeing offers condolences after a passenger was killed on a Boeing 777 plane, says their “thoughts” are with the passengers and crew. In total 30 people were injured and a 73-year-old British man was killed. The incident happened after the plane fell a whopping 6000 feet. “Suddenly the aircraft starts tilting up and there was shaking so I started bracing for what was happening, and very suddenly there was a very dramatic drop so everyone seated and not wearing seatbelt was launched immediately into the ceiling,” a passenger said. “Some people hit their heads on the baggage cabins overhead and dented it, they hit the places where lights and masks are and broke straight through it.”

I'm here to provide an update on the incident that occurred at Toronto Pearson today. Delta Airlines flight 4819 from Minneapolis, operated by Endeavour Air, was involved in an accident upon landing. There were 76 passengers and four crew members on board. Thankfully, there was no loss of life due to the quick response of our emergency teams. Seventeen injured passengers were taken to local hospitals, none with critical injuries reported so far. We temporarily halted arrivals and departures, but three runways reopened around 5 PM. The other runways will remain closed for the ongoing investigation. We're focused on supporting the passengers and crew, with Delta Airlines providing customer care. Travelers should check our website and their airline for updates on potential delays.

Speaker 0: Deborah Flint, president Pearson, CEO of Toronto Pearson. I've just come over from our emergency operation center, and I'm here to give you a statement on what events transpired, here today, at Toronto Pearson. First and foremost, there was no loss of life, and this is in due part to our heroic and trained professionals, our first responders, at the airport. So the facts of the matter around this event that happened at approximately 02:30PM is Delta Airlines flight 4819 from Minneapolis to Toronto operated by subsidiary Endeavour Air was involved in a single aircraft accident accident upon landing at Toronto Pearson. The plane was carrying four crew and 76 passengers, among them 22 Canadians. The other passengers were multinational. Airport emergency workers mounted a textbook response, response, reaching the site within minutes and quickly evacuating the passengers. We set up our emergency operation center with Delta Airlines and representatives from fire, police, paramedics, security, and our federal agency partners. Again, there were no fatalities. Seventeen injured passengers were quickly taken to local area hospitals. At this time, we do not know of any of those passengers having critical injuries. We immediately halted, further arrivals and departures on our remaining three runways. Those runways were reopened at approximately 5PM. The other runways are remaining to serve the investigation, which will be carrying forward for the rest of tonight, and into the next several days. These two runways will remain closed while our investigation or while the investigation takes place. Again, we are very grateful that there was no loss of life and relatively minor injuries. We are very focused on the care and the concern and the passengers and the crew, some of whom have already been reunified with their friends and their families. Others, we have in a comfortable place right here at the airport, in an environment where they're getting a lot of care and support from my staff. Delta Airlines is also continuing to provide customer care, and information for passengers. In closing, no airport CEO wants to have these type of press conferences, but this is exactly what our emergency, our operations, and our federal our our first responder, partners are all practiced and trained for. And again, this outcome is in due part, to their heroic work, and I thank them profusely. Our thoughts and prayers are with all. We will be providing more information as it becomes available. We do expect that there will be some operational impact and some delays at the airport over the next few days while the two runways remain closed for the investigation. And we will be sharing information periodically. For those traveling, continue to look at our website and be in touch with your respective carrier as well. Thank you for your time today.

Video Transcript AI Summary
When the video starts, the plane appears normal, descending smoothly around 50 miles per hour, about a hundred feet above the runway. But instead of flaring to soften the impact, it slams in hard. Within seven seconds, the right landing gear collapses, and the wing tears off upon contacting the ground. This tearing is good because it sprays fuel away from the passenger cabin. The plane rolls onto its right side, flips over, and ends upside down. In about four seconds, passengers experience a normal flight turning into a hard landing, a fireball, and the plane rolling over. What saved them was the fuselage remaining intact due to the wing tearing away and the seats being able to withstand the shock. The plane slides upside down for seven seconds before rescue arrives. In eighteen seconds, passengers went from a normal flight to escaping for their lives. It's remarkable they all survived.
Full Transcript
Speaker 0: What this new video tells us now passengers experienced it, I wanna bring in CNET's Tom Foreman who's been going through it frame by frame. Tom, what what have you learned? Speaker 1: Boy, an awful lot, Anderson. When this video begins, we're gonna mark this as zero seconds. Everything would appear to be normal to the passengers. The The plane is coming in around a 30, a 50 miles per hour. It looks like it's about a hundred feet above the runway, stable and descending smoothly. In the next few seconds though, just what Pete talked about there, you do not see the nose come up as it flares to slow that descent. Instead, softening the impact, it slams in very hard. Seven seconds after everything was fine, this plane with a maximum landing weight of 73,000 pounds comes down very hard. The right side landing gear, as Pete noted, collapses. The wing is torn off as it contacts the ground. That's actually very good news because that allows the fuel in that wing to spray away from the plane, not onto the main cabin where all those passengers are. Then the roll starts. The plane is on its right side. It tips up. It rolls all the way over and winds up upside down. Speaker 0: It it must have seemed like it happened incredibly fast for the people inside. Speaker 1: Absolutely. They would have gone from what would have seemed to be this is a mock up of that. They would have gone from about seven seconds in to from a normal flight to this very hard landing and then a fireball outside and then rolling over all of this in about four seconds. Speaker 0: Wow. Speaker 1: What saved them in that time was the fuselage is still intact. That's still related to that wing tearing away instead of crushing the cabin. And by their seats, which by regulation would have require are made with a requirement that they can withstand that kind of shock and not release from the floor, dropping them all on their heads, Anderson. Speaker 0: And even then, I mean, it wasn't over yet. I mean, they had to Speaker 1: do it. This is the amazing thing. Imagine you're in this position, and this is what happens. The plane goes on sliding for seven long seconds while they're upside down before the fire trucks can race out and the evacuations could begin. In total, those passengers went from what seemed a picture perfect flight, or at least pretty close to it to scrambling for their lives in eighteen seconds. Andresson, the fact they all got out alive, remarkable. Speaker 0: That's incredible. Tom Forman, thanks so much.

Aviation experts who reviewed footage of the Delta Flight 4819 crashing in Toronto say that the plane hit too hard on landing that made the right landing gear penetrate through the right wing of the plane. Video Transcript AI Summary
Delta Flight 4819, with 76 passengers and four crew members, skidded down the runway at over 100 mph, flipped, and caught fire. A hard landing is suspected to have caused the right landing gear to collapse, with the wing snapping off on impact. Experts believe the wing's detachment helped maintain the cabin's structural integrity, protecting passengers. Passengers found themselves hanging upside down, held by sturdy seatbelts, and assisted each other. The well-trained crew and quick response from airport firefighters were critical in the safe evacuation of everyone on board within ten minutes, just before the fuel reignited. The Transportation Safety Board of Canada is investigating the crash's cause, with the investigation expected to take months.

Speaker 0: 76 passengers and four crew members narrowly escaped disaster after Delta four eight one nine skids down the runway at over a hundred miles per hour, flips upside down, and bursts into flames. Investigators are now scrambling to piece together how the crash took place and how each passenger aboard the plane survived. It comes after a series of deadly plane crashes over the last two months. Here's what we know so far. Delta Flight four eight one nine, operated by Regional Endeavor Air, is a Canadian built Bombardier CRJ 900. The 16 year old narrow body plane is described by experts as a workhorse for flights between midsize cities. Chris Finlison is a former Endeavor pilot. He's flown into Toronto Airport dozens of times, and in fact, he's flown the very route of the plane that crashed on Monday. Speaker 1: We only flew CRJs at Endeavor. We were the largest operator actually of the CRJ 900 in the world. And it's a it really is. It's a great airplane to fly. Speaker 0: Investigators are now reviewing this video. The plane with its landing gear appearing down rapidly descends. It's canted or angled to the right to compensate for a 40 mile an hour crosswind. As the plane touches down, the right landing gear appears to collapse, causing the plane's starboard wing to begin scraping the runway. Flames and thick black smoke block our view of the plane as it overturns. ABC News spoke with aviation experts who highlighted three key elements in this video, the plane's landing gear, its wing, and its fuselage. Speaker 1: When you come into land and then you roll out, it's very easy to end up pulling the nose a little bit too high. But you notice when I pull the nose a little too high, the wheels are back here and you get kind of that motion where you end up driving your main landing gear into the the runway. Speaker 2: When we hit down, it seemed like we hit pretty hard. And I thought, okay, this is a pretty rough landing, but I've I've had that before. And then all of a sudden, the plane started listing and turning to the right. Speaker 0: That hard landing is what some experts believe contributed to the collapse of the CRJ nine hundred's right landing gear. Speaker 3: The impact on the right main gear has driven the gear past its limitations, and and in the vernacular, it's it's driven the gear up through the wing. Speaker 0: Inside the plane, passengers described feeling the heat emanating from a fire outside the cabin. Speaker 4: It was just incredibly fast. There was a giant firewall down the side. I could actually feel the heat through the through the glass. Speaker 0: Images taken after the crash clearly show the right wing snapped off the fuselage while the right landing gear was ripped off the plane. According to multiple aviation experts, the split second loss of the wing, which holds half the jet's fuel, might have helped ensure the structural integrity of the cabin and the safety of its passengers. Speaker 5: If you are actually experiencing such a hard impact that you know the plane is crashing, which would have been the case here, then you would want it to snap off because the alternative is that your fuselage would have been structurally the weakest point, in which case it would have crunched and torsioned. Speaker 3: All of these airplanes are metallic eggshells. When they're used exactly as they're designed, they're incredibly strong. And and that's exactly what happened here because the cabin wasn't breached. It retained its structural integrity. Speaker 0: As the plane slowed to a stop, the 76 passengers on board found themselves hanging upside down in the cabin, locked in place thanks to modern seats and belts that can withstand immense g forces. Speaker 2: I was hanging definitely by the seat belt, which they are very sturdy because I'm I'm not a little fella. And, you know, everybody, everybody was helping their neighbor. Speaker 0: The final factor that saved the lives of the passengers and crew was likely the plane's well trained crew and the fast response from the airport's firefighters, experts said. Speaker 1: So when you have something that that is so abnormal and so outside of what your psyche can kinda deal with, you go to your foundational knowledge. And that's what you do as a airline employee is you have a strong foundational knowledge. When emergencies happen, you just go to your instinct, and your instincts are to get people out safely. Speaker 0: By 02:21PM, less than ten minutes after the crash landing, every passenger and crew, many of whom reported the intense smell of jet fuel emanating throughout the cabin, safely exited the plane, escaping just moments before the fuel ignited once again. Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada are beginning to uncover clues about the cause of the crash, with an investigation expected to take months.

In a statement, Delta says the crew executed a go around then landed safely and proceeded to its arrival gate, adding we apologize to our customers for the experience. Tonight, that aircraft remains grounded at LaGuardia out of service. There's no immediate indication when it may return to the air. The flight operated by the same regional carrier involved in this dangerous incident last month, a fiery crash landing at Toronto's airport. And David here in New York there were no reported impacts or injuries at LaGuardia but the FAA says it's now investigating. David Speaker 0: Trevor Old with us here tonight Trevor thank you.

I came across new video footage of Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a British national, walking away from the Air India wreckage after surviving a tragic crash that claimed nearly 300 lives. It's shocking that while he survived, his brother, who was seated next to him, did not. Ramesh described the scene, noting that the emergency door was broken and his seat was damaged, yet he managed to escape. He was later visited by PM Narendra Modi in the hospital. Ramesh was in seat 11A, while his brother was in 11J.

Ramesh was visited by PM Narendra Modi shortly after the crash while in the hospital. The 40-year-old says he was sitting in seat 11A. His brother, 35, was in 11J.

The speaker believed they were going to die in a plane crash. After takeoff, the plane felt still for 5-10 seconds before crashing into a building. The side of the plane the speaker was on landed on the ground floor of a hostel. The speaker escaped through a broken door, but those on the opposite side of the plane, which crashed against a wall, could not escape. The speaker witnessed the deaths of the air hostess and others.

Speaker 0: For some time, I thought I was also going to die. But when I opened my eyes, I realized I was alive, and I tried to unbuckle myself from the seat and escape from where I could. It was in front of my eyes that the air hostess and others died. After the takeoff, within a minute, it felt like the plane came to a standstill for five to ten seconds. The green and white cabin lights turned on in the flight. I could feel engine thrust increasing to go up, but it crashed with speed into the building. The side of the plane I was in, it landed on the Ground Floor of the hostel. I don't know about the other part of the plane, but where I landed was on the ground. I could see that there was space outside the aircraft. So when my door broke, I tried to escape through a little space, and I did. On the opposite side of the plane was the building wall, so nobody could have escaped. The plane crashed there. There was some space where I landed. I don't know how I managed to escape. It was in front of my eyes that the air hostess and others died.

I experienced a terrifying moment on a Southwest flight from Burbank to Las Vegas when the pilot had to nosedive to avoid a midair collision shortly after takeoff. Passengers were thrown from their seats, with one comparing the experience to the 'Tower of Terror' ride. About ten minutes in, we felt a sudden drop that had everyone screaming, fearing a crash. Afterward, the pilot informed us that we nearly collided with another plane and had lost contact with air traffic control. At least one flight attendant was injured in the chaos.
