I've just come over from our emergency operation center, and I'm here to give you a statement on what events transpired, here today, at Toronto Pearson. First and foremost, there was no loss of life, and this is in due part to our heroic and trained professionals, our first responders, at the airport. So the facts of the matter around this event that happened at approximately 02:30PM is Delta Airlines flight 4819 from Minneapolis to Toronto operated by subsidiary Endeavour Air was involved in a single aircraft accident accident upon landing at Toronto Pearson. The plane was carrying four crew and 76 passengers, among them 22 Canadians. The other passengers were multinational. Airport emergency workers mounted a textbook response, response, reaching the site within minutes and quickly evacuating the passengers. We set up our emergency operation center with Delta Airlines and representatives from fire, police, paramedics, security, and our federal agency partners. Again, there were no fatalities. Seventeen injured passengers were quickly taken to local area hospitals. At this time, we do not know of any of those passengers having critical injuries. We immediately halted, further arrivals and departures on our remaining three runways. Those runways were reopened at approximately 5PM. The other runways are remaining to serve the investigation, which will be carrying forward for the rest of tonight, and into the next several days. These two runways will remain closed while our investigation or while the investigation takes place. Again, we are very grateful that there was no loss of life and relatively minor injuries. We are very focused on the care and the concern and the passengers and the crew, some of whom have already been reunified with their friends and their families. Others, we have in a comfortable place right here at the airport, in an environment where they're getting a lot of care and support from my staff. Delta Airlines is also continuing to provide customer care, and information for passengers. In closing, no airport CEO wants to have these type of press conferences, but this is exactly what our emergency, our operations, and our federal our our first responder, partners are all practiced and trained for. And again, this outcome is in due part, to their heroic work, and I thank them profusely. Our thoughts and prayers are with all. We will be providing more information as it becomes available. We do expect that there will be some operational impact and some delays at the airport over the next few days while the two runways remain closed for the investigation. And we will be sharing information periodically. For those traveling, continue to look at our website and be in touch with your respective carrier as well. Thank you for your time today.

Speaker 0: 76 passengers and four crew members narrowly escaped disaster after Delta four eight one nine skids down the runway at over a hundred miles per hour, flips upside down, and bursts into flames. Investigators are now scrambling to piece together how the crash took place and how each passenger aboard the plane survived. It comes after a series of deadly plane crashes over the last two months. Here's what we know so far. Delta Flight four eight one nine, operated by Regional Endeavor Air, is a Canadian built Bombardier CRJ 900. The 16 year old narrow body plane is described by experts as a workhorse for flights between midsize cities. Chris Finlison is a former Endeavor pilot. He's flown into Toronto Airport dozens of times, and in fact, he's flown the very route of the plane that crashed on Monday. Speaker 1: We only flew CRJs at Endeavor. We were the largest operator actually of the CRJ 900 in the world. And it's a it really is. It's a great airplane to fly. Speaker 0: Investigators are now reviewing this video. The plane with its landing gear appearing down rapidly descends. It's canted or angled to the right to compensate for a 40 mile an hour crosswind. As the plane touches down, the right landing gear appears to collapse, causing the plane's starboard wing to begin scraping the runway. Flames and thick black smoke block our view of the plane as it overturns. ABC News spoke with aviation experts who highlighted three key elements in this video, the plane's landing gear, its wing, and its fuselage. Speaker 1: When you come into land and then you roll out, it's very easy to end up pulling the nose a little bit too high. But you notice when I pull the nose a little too high, the wheels are back here and you get kind of that motion where you end up driving your main landing gear into the the runway. Speaker 2: When we hit down, it seemed like we hit pretty hard. And I thought, okay, this is a pretty rough landing, but I've I've had that before. And then all of a sudden, the plane started listing and turning to the right. Speaker 0: That hard landing is what some experts believe contributed to the collapse of the CRJ nine hundred's right landing gear. Speaker 3: The impact on the right main gear has driven the gear past its limitations, and and in the vernacular, it's it's driven the gear up through the wing. Speaker 0: Inside the plane, passengers described feeling the heat emanating from a fire outside the cabin. Speaker 4: It was just incredibly fast. There was a giant firewall down the side. I could actually feel the heat through the through the glass. Speaker 0: Images taken after the crash clearly show the right wing snapped off the fuselage while the right landing gear was ripped off the plane. According to multiple aviation experts, the split second loss of the wing, which holds half the jet's fuel, might have helped ensure the structural integrity of the cabin and the safety of its passengers. Speaker 5: If you are actually experiencing such a hard impact that you know the plane is crashing, which would have been the case here, then you would want it to snap off because the alternative is that your fuselage would have been structurally the weakest point, in which case it would have crunched and torsioned. Speaker 3: All of these airplanes are metallic eggshells. When they're used exactly as they're designed, they're incredibly strong. And and that's exactly what happened here because the cabin wasn't breached. It retained its structural integrity. Speaker 0: As the plane slowed to a stop, the 76 passengers on board found themselves hanging upside down in the cabin, locked in place thanks to modern seats and belts that can withstand immense g forces. Speaker 2: I was hanging definitely by the seat belt, which they are very sturdy because I'm I'm not a little fella. And, you know, everybody, everybody was helping their neighbor. Speaker 0: The final factor that saved the lives of the passengers and crew was likely the plane's well trained crew and the fast response from the airport's firefighters, experts said. Speaker 1: So when you have something that that is so abnormal and so outside of what your psyche can kinda deal with, you go to your foundational knowledge. And that's what you do as a airline employee is you have a strong foundational knowledge. When emergencies happen, you just go to your instinct, and your instincts are to get people out safely. Speaker 0: By 02:21PM, less than ten minutes after the crash landing, every passenger and crew, many of whom reported the intense smell of jet fuel emanating throughout the cabin, safely exited the plane, escaping just moments before the fuel ignited once again. Investigators with the Transportation Safety Board of Canada are beginning to uncover clues about the cause of the crash, with an investigation expected to take months.
